I feel like Brony's are just the West's version of "older man obsessed with cutesy thing" phenomenon that has been a thing in Japan and other Asian countries for DECADES.
I feel like that really explains part of why I love the show so much. I love cutesy anime, lol. But not really in a perverted way 😅 . I'm also gay. Though I also feel like being sexually attracted to the characters isn't necessarily bad if it is treated in a very private way, like with any other porn or fetish. What goes on in people's bedrooms is THEIR business, basically, as long as no one is being harmed physically/emotionally and is consenting.
@@JunkieSama cutesy things are just so fun to watch and enjoy without having to worry about stakes. That's the reason I love slice of life anime, just watching people do stuff and talk is endlessly entertaining to me. High stakes only stress me out so I like to relax and watch something chill.
@@alilordoftheskies5079 Exactly! I love all types of anime, but the slice of life genre is one of my favorites for that exact reason. My favorite of all-time is Lucky * Star 🥰 . And back on the discussion of MLP, I think it really drew in anime fans in general because it was so much like slice of life/comedy anime, but also had elements of Shonen with the villains and more serious storylines, as well as the continuing overarching story which seems to be an extremely rare thing in Western animation. Consistency even makes slice of life better because it makes it feel more realistic in a way and actually matter.
@@JunkieSama I love Lucky Star! I watch it once through every year bc it relaxes me. Also I found the dub is really good, which is getting increasingly rare for anime. Dude, same. My boyfriend when I was 18 was a hardcore brony and he treated me like absolutely garbage. Was the most callous and insensitive and emotionally numb person I ever dated. Big yikes. He liked the pink one, I forget the name.
I couldnt really tell what was written, when they were debating which language it was in. Which language was it? I know that americans struggle to tell the difference between dutch, danish, german, swedish and norwegian lol
my family immigrated from the Netherlands to America and the amount of times people would say I was polish/danish/German/swedish AFTER I told them was insane 💀
i think often when people wonder why adult men liked a show for young (mainly) girls, forget they liked it because the fandom had young girls in it. i was in the fandom when i was in middle school and the grooming and preying on young ppl was so horrific that the fandom for the kids show wasn’t for kids anymore.
That is absolutely horrible and I am really sorry you had that experience... But some of us just loved the show. It was as simple as that. I wish so many sick-minded people wouldn't have used MLP for horrible things like that.
Being honest here, I think we (I'm in the fandom to this day) did much too little to kick those people out of the fandom. "Love and tolerate" got taken too literally, and we (as a fandom, not you and me personally) tolerated people who _shouldn't_ have been tolerated. Obviously the OP doesn't literally mean "if men liked MLP, it was because of the kids" as that's not true at all. But the only acceptable number of those in the fandom was and is zero, and we absolutely did not push hard enough to _make_ it zero.
@@JunkieSama It's very very context-dependent. You can easily spend your whole time in nice, safe places. I do, but then I'm in the UK and our fandom is maybe smaller and quieter than the US one. Certainly I've been with friends to see MLP movies in cinemas and there's never once been a problem. But this kind of thing should never be tolerated, and it was, too much.
mlp is a great show tbh. it’s wholesome, funny, cute, etc. it’s truly is a shame that so many weirdos were drawn to it and made a lot of gross shit based on it. there’s plenty of teens/adults that enjoyed it without any creepy undertones, just like any other kids show with adult fans. my gf and i watched it back when we were in high school (before either of us knew we were queer and trans), and for her it was kinda the first space were she could openly enjoy a very feminine piece of media. there’s a joke about how the bronies that didn’t become incels/yt supremacists became leftist trans girls instead lol. we both have lots of positive memories of the fandom (we were mostly on tumblr), but we won’t ever try to dispute that most brony spaces online were flooded with absolute creeps.
Yes! As someone with social anxiety who grew up watching it its a really great comfort show with the kid centered social/moral lessons. And the fandom was my first exposure to lgbt creators and made me feel normal seeing other gay tweens draw themselves and their gfs ponysonas so casually. Drawing my own ponysona made me want to pursue art and its how i met my best friend 6 years ago. Its had a huge impact on me growing up and had some wonderful spaces, but its genuinely just so awful the amount of grotesque pornography and fetishes that were plastered everywhere for a what should of been a kid friendly community.
Just a small correction cause you had me feeling delusional- there were MLP shows before 2000s too. From the 80s on actually. I remember watching one in the 90s as a kid.
I still have some og ponies an old babysitter gave me from the late 80s! Also, am I the only one who remembers ninja turtles being a cartoon first and then all the merch coming out once it was a hit? Sleeping bags, lunchboxes, thermoses, slippers, action figures, etc..
the word 'mudblood' actually has some origins as a slur in Northern Ireland where it was used (still is) as a derogatory term for the child of a couple that is mixed protestant and catholic - stemming from the troubles in NI. I think it was also used as a slur towards the child of a couple who is mixed Christian and Jewish - Just another reason to hate JK Rowling for using a term that actually has origins as a slur lol
I agree w Sarah about needing consistency and stability and wanting each day to be similar or have a schedule. If something big comes up, like a job interview, it's all I can think about and stress over until it happens. And then I'm like why did I stress over that so much
I’ve been listening to the first episode and truly felt like I needed to tell y’all this story. Growing up, I was the target audience for my little pony. I was also supper into the comic series because I loved comics and I got the opportunity to meet my absolute favorite mlp comic illustrator at a local convention. I don’t remember this interaction because I was like 8, but my dad remembers vividly. I was her only visiter at the time and we where having a lengthy conversation about my absolute favorite pony that was mostly just me info dumping about her and the comic while she eagerly listened. But a grown ass man who was probably about my dads age interrupted the conversation and was trying to tell me I was wrong about some fact (again, I don’t remember). This grown man began to argue with a literal child, who was correct in whatever the fact was, and my poor father and the artist had no idea what to do. Eventually my dad pulled me away and the guy just went on to talk to the artist instead of me. Very uncomfortable and I probably suppressed it, as well as a lot of other parts of my experience as an mlp fan.
Y'ALL I was in Baltimore during bronycon 2015 and I went into one of the malls in the Inner Harbor and what do I hear around the corner? HOOVES. SOMEONE WAS WALKING AROUND A MALL WEARING HOOF SHOES. That was my one and only experience with bronies and I wish to keep it that way
@@KingOfGaymes I just think it is wrong to dislike someone for that specific reason. There's no need to distance themselves unless the individual is actually bad. To me it's the same as discriminating against someone for any other reason.
As a Swedish person, the geography portion of this was wild 😭 also, maps aren’t proportional, a US world map is going to show the US as proportionally larger to the rest of the world than it actually is. Size wise the US and Europe are almost the same size, Europe being slightly larger and with more than double the population. Also all regions have different cultures, not just languages, although that is also an important factor. It’s very difficult to compare the two.
As a Danish person I can confirm that the geography part was wild😭😂 like pls not the "wtf is denmark then!?" part😭😂💀 I didn't really think people would think the Netherlands and Denmark are the same but i guess they do😂💀
Africa is huge compared to both the US and Europe, but because of the Mercator projection both Europe and the US are distorted to look larger. The earliest commercial world mapmakers were all European, which is why Europe is in the center of most world maps, even though the world is a sphere and literally anywhere could be the center.
THANKYOUUU for this comment. Im ngl listening to them talking about geography and equating travelling in the US to travelling to different countries was honestly annoying me💀 I wish they just stuck to only talking about bronies.
You cannot drive from New York to Disney world Florida, it takes at least 3 days. You cannot drive from Disney world Florida to the Grand Canyon without again, taking at least 3/4 days driving. Once at the Grand Canyon you can drive thru Texas for two or three days to get into California, but it’ll take you another day to reach Hollywood, and if you wana see the Golden Gate Bridge be prepared to drive another day at least, but you can get to Vegas from Los Angeles quickly…about 6/7 hours 😂 that’s how large the states are ❤ I’d love to visit Europe and take advantage of the trains to visit all the countries I wish we had that kind of transport here.
Y'all should have watched Jenny's in-depth dissection of the fandom in preparation 😂 it answers many of the questions you've asked yourselves in this podcast
I’m a furry so often times would cross paths with bronies. I know people shit on them (and to be fair, there’s nasty people in every fandom) but I just wanna give a shoutout to the people who are casual fans! I watched some episodes with my sibling when they were little and I can see why people like it! It’s a cute show! I did witness some shit go down, of course. Fandom discourse (like always), harassing the show’s writers/VAs/any employee really, “clop” on my TL, harassment in general everywhere. Since the show is over I’ve seen way less, but those things are definitely burned in my brain. Would not be surprised if Stanley *did* just write all this from memory lmao
We watched the brony documentary in one of my film analysis classes…. As someone who was in high school during the height of tumblr fandom popularity (I’d say circa 2012-2015) I understood a lot more about where the people featured in the doc were coming from in their love for the show vs my peers who just made fun of people throughout the whole watch. I never was into MLP, but as someone who was very into other big fandoms at the time i appreciated and understood the intensity to which someone can enjoy a piece of media, especially a “nonstandard” one
I watched it too a few years back and I completely agree with you. Not a Brony (well, Pegasister) myself but grew up in the 80's with the original show and have nieces and nephews so was introduced to the new MLP. I also watch Spongebob. I like how cute and sweet and silly these shows are and they make me smile. I need that break after a good horror marathon or binging Breaking Bad and Ozark 😁.
As a danish person I laughed so fucking hard when you two started talking about Denmark, scandinavia, and all of that. America should seriously start making geography mandatory
As a furry, we usually refer to fandoms like bronies as "furry adjacent". Things like sonic and even pokemon can also be considered adjacent. I think one of the best parts about the furry fandom is that it isn't tied to any particular property or media or "text" as you said lol. It's literally just animal people that come out purely from our brains, heart and soul 🐶
tbh I think it also helps when a lot of people feel uncomfortable with a franchise, whereas furry is a make your own space thing, which allows people to carve their space and curate it appropriately.
Furries are a subculture in their own right, whereas Bronies literally co-opted something intended for a very different demographic and aggressively invaded that space, making it unsafe for the children it was designed for. I grew up in the 80s with the original MLP and tbh, the whole Brony thing disgusted me.

However, I stayed away from the community because I was embarrassed and also a thoroughly creeped out by the sexualization of it. However, I held a job for a few years working with young children and the MLP knowledge was definitely an asset. Kids were psyched that I could name the ponies. Granted they were also psyched I could name transformers and Pokémon as well but hey it worked out.

The only thing I'll add is that there are lots of guys who didn't get treated with love, gentleness, and care as children, and there isn't anything inherently wrong with seeking that out as an adult through a TV show.
i went to a mlp convention when i was in middle school at the peak of the fandom. there were definitely a few weird adults but for the most part the attendees and organizers really tried to make it a safe place for kids (at least at the one i went to)
I was 12 years old in 2012 when I became a brony. Can confirm, lot of very unstable people and more grooming than I'd care to look back on. It was no party growing up out of school with only the internet to turn to, and I definitely didn't keep good company %70 of the time.
FINALLY!!!! I love mlp, i watched the FIM show when it aired when i was younger and i still enjoy it. . . But the brony fandom is such an awful space if you go to the old gross men side. I think you too would really enjoy the show a lot and cant wait to hear your thoughts on all of this

I used to work at a restaurant in the city where Bronycon was held, and every summer you'd see grown men and women dressed as their favorite pony from the series in full regalia. This. 100%
For me growing up, MLP got me into anime. Since the main 6 are basically magical girls it lead me down the rabbithole of Pretty Cure and I haven't gotten out since.

i think often when people wonder why adult men liked a show for young (mainly) girls, forget they liked it because the fandom had young girls in it. i was in the fandom when i was in middle school and the grooming and preying on young ppl was so horrific that the fandom for the kids show wasn’t for kids anymore.
@@Loganberrybunny Agreed. Honestly I had no idea that there were so many horrible people in the fandom.
@@JunkieSama It's very very context-dependent. You can easily spend your whole time in nice, safe places. I do, but then I'm in the UK and our fandom is maybe smaller and quieter than the US one. mlp is a great show tbh. it’s wholesome, funny, cute, etc. it’s truly is a shame that so many weirdos were drawn to it and made a lot of gross shit based on it. there’s plenty of teens/adults that enjoyed it without any creepy undertones, just like any other kids show with adult fans.
my gf and i watched it back when we were in high school (before either of us knew we were queer and trans), and for her it was kinda the first space were she could openly enjoy a very feminine piece of media. there’s a joke about how the bronies that didn’t become incels/yt supremacists became leftist trans girls instead lol. we both have lots of positive memories of the fandom (we were mostly on tumblr), but we won’t ever try to dispute that most brony spaces online were flooded with absolute creeps.

I WAS JUST THINKING THAT
As a Swedish person, the geography portion of this was wild 😭 also, maps aren’t proportional, a US world map is going to show the US as proportionally larger to the rest of the world than it actually is.
As a Norwegian person is was most definitely wild 😂
THANKYOUUU for this comment. Im ngl listening to them talking about geography and equating travelling in the US to travelling to different countries was honestly annoying me💀 I wish they just stuck to only talking about bronies.

The fact that it's "Bronies: Part 1" is the funniest thing ever
As a furry, we usually refer to fandoms like bronies as "furry adjacent". Things like sonic and even pokemon can also be considered adjacent.
I think one of the best parts about the furry fandom is that it isn't tied to any particular property or media or "text" as you said lol. It's literally just animal people that come out purely from our brains, heart and soul 🐶
bronies are just in-denial furries and i will die on that hill. a lot of them have a lot of internalised furphobia lmao
tbh I think it also helps when a lot of people feel uncomfortable with a franchise, whereas furry is a make your own space thing, which allows people to carve their space and curate it appropriately.
Furries are a subculture in their own right, whereas Bronies literally co-opted something intended for a very different demographic and aggressively invaded that space, making it unsafe for the children it was designed for. I grew up in the 80s with the original MLP and tbh, the whole Brony thing disgusted me.

I used to work at a restaurant in the city where Bronycon was held, and every summer you'd see grown men and women dressed as their favorite pony from the series in full regalia. It was a weekend long convention filled with different activities like "tea party etiquette" and stuff like that.
