Rob can judge measure better than most; he ate my lunch and took my supper home earlier this year. It was great to see you match so well against him. Well done!
Holy fuck what a tense fight (for me at least). Your first point against him was nuts. His supreme sense of measure along with his rigid sort of position really allows him to capitalize on any open line at a moments notice
Not to discredit Rob but i think GF afterblow rules and finals pools (survivability rating determining winner) would really change the way this match went.
@@zaboobebop upfront- I've never fenced Rob and but I have many clubmates that have and I have no doubt of his fencing ability. That said, a lot of those points were uncontrolled thrusts that Josh very clearly afterblowed in a realistic tempo. I just think a ruleset that prioritized defense and control over single tempo, almost right of way style fencing would have drastically altered the outcome of this fight.
It is strange, I thought it would be rapier vs sabre. I know Childs for his rapier stuff. When I saw him with a sabre I thought you would win. This really shows that their are things that are in swordsmanship that are universal and in our era you can be the best in multiple disciplines. Good effort though you really made Childs work for it.
@@jaketheasianguy3307 The thing I find strange is the when period authors talk about different weapons and in practical experience their are things about these swords that are unique to them. Conditioning your body to leverage these things at a competitive level and making all the adjustments to the techniques to make them work and making the correct decisions at the same speed. This is difficult and usually comes with a tax on performance. Which is why seeing Robert do it is so incredible. On the other hand he could have been doing sabre for 15 years and thus this is just normal but assuming he is mostly a rapier guy adjusting his system to sabre it is a feat of skill.
@@mohamedyusuf4777I don't think Rob is a single weapon guy at all, a lot of HEMA practitioners are not single weapon people. There are also systems for Sabre and Rapier afterall, like Destreza being applied to Sabre. I found that I didn't get any points trying to fight sabreists on their own terms, but once I started just doing Destreza with the sabre I was doing much better. Robert's style is very observational, his guard is low so he can see your posture and distance perfectly. He springs like a trap once you trip one of his wires. He doesn't need to be doing any specific system to achieve that. If anything, his style seems most similar to Epee than anything. In any martial art though, skilled and master level fighters often abandon the trappings of the art. Watch a master spar their student and they'll strut around them like a rooster and do perfect counters just to flex on them, it's very funny. Robert has footwork and striking that works for him, so he doesn't need to rely solely on teachings from any specific manual or master.
Always appreciate you showcasing yourself fighting less known fencers to the rest of the world outside of HEMA. Gives us a better idea of the prowess within the HEMA circles. I'd like more of that. Good work.
the camera angle doesn't do full justice to how cool the point that you got was with that false edge cut . i was looking at it from the other side of the circle and it looked so sick, i was one of the "oooooooooo's"
I'm very surprised that people can't adapt to Rob Child's exaggerated lunges. They look very fast but a good fencer should be able to bring that point off line and riposte easily - Rob Childs simply has no balance left after those huge lunges. He even telegraphs when he lifts his foot and raises his point. Why doesn't anyone practice against a fencer's lunges if they know he will be competing? Simple enough, parry that point off line and do a simple thrust, if red would have knocked the point away and took a half step in with a thrust he'd have scored each time. I'm personally not afraid of any fencer going into such a lunge.
I hate this video so much! 😆 Two shallow leg touches, three doubles, including that ugly early one, and two fleches. No creativity, no artistry. The only good part was that one pretty fleche riposte Josh got. This shouldn't be what we're aiming for.
Well said. Dude was playing tag out there. It takes the "martial" completely out of martial art. I hate to be "that guy", but fencing like that would get you killed in an actual duel.
The thing is, he only attacks when he knows he will land the thrust. Which has made him number 1 in rapier. If you could parry everything anyone throws, you too would be number 1 in the world.

Guy is doing just basic MOF stuff whereas most of hema guys just fucks around and find out.

The lunge form is so funny, almost looks he's triping into you.

Rob's system can work with most 1 handed sword with complex hilt

Damn. This was far dirtier with doubles than I expected. Childs didn't parry once and yet he's extremely hard to beat in most rulesets.

I’m not sure if Rob Childs is lesser known lol
@@zaboobebop Forgive me. I'm still new to these circles.
Childs is the number 1 rapier fencer in the world for a few years. He also ranks high in saber and smallsword.
@@SwordScience Thank you.

It definitely looked plenty awesome from this angle too! Made me go "YOOOO" 😂
Sick exchanges! That was super fun to watch!
I played 1:31-1:37 in 0.25 playback speed. It was beautiful. Chefs kiss.
Yall have to do it again, that was cool 👍
Guys remember that robbing is wrong, specially childs. But the rest of the video is awesome
Lolol
That parry, counter at 1:35 is INSANE!
you can tell that childs is a rapier specialist. even with a saber, he's fencing with the tip of the blade instead of the edge
That was fantastic work! I hope you get to play together again. Thank you for sharing!
Outstanding, man! I can’t wait to see and bout with you sometime! Thanks for your channel
They should run these events consecutively with Olympic fencing competitions or near their venues...
In terms of points, Robert. In terms of devastating strikes Josh. HEMA tournaments are largely about points.
Rob square stance and lounge is absolutely fantastic .....you are really Great it was s very close match
Your point was excellently done, Josh!
I think Josh gave Robert a run for his money though. It was a honorable defeat.
Not the thumbnail title lmao
missed opportunity to title the video "I fought a child"
wow his distance control is so impressive
What a good fight, man
those thrusts were uncanny. each of Rob's thrusts here were perfectly placed to catch an opening AND obscure any counter blow.
I would like to have seen this go longer
Yeah, me too
making the speed to. somehow made me see the moves, i like watching this kind of stuffs😅
parry at 1:34 was A-MAZING!!!
Maybe it's a little silly question, is there any member skilled at a two-handed sword in your team? Like a zweihänder.
Only me, we focus on sabre
@@FalseEdgeHEMA Got it. Thanks for replying 👍
GAH. this gave me very loud and upset opinions that i'll keep to myself. you looked great out there though! :)
Why be silent. This is the yt comments section
@FalseEdgeHEMA Well if that's how you feel then: Na na na na boo boo, you got beat uuuup. Na na na na boo boo you got you butt kicked.
0:59 does that even hit you??? 🤔🤔
Does Rob Childs mean taking candy from a baby?
Lol now it does
Rob is 53. Josh you got like what, 20 years to catch up? 😂
If I last that long 😭
I hate the way Rob fences
Not because it’s bad but because it’s not pretty lol
His stance irritates the crap out of me. He also hits people to hurt them and is known for this.
Agreed, and those fleches had no business succeeding the way they did.
@@ThatHabsburgMapGuy He plays within the rules and the moment it’s HEMA with rules it’s sport.
@@BetterExplanation Does he? I've never fenced him, I'm not even on the same coast, but just based on video, it seems he barely touches his opponents.

rob is too unbalanced in his attack, if you could parry an attack like that it would be good
The thing is, he only attacks when he knows he will land the thrust. Which has made him number 1 in rapier. If you could parry everything anyone throws, you too would be number 1 in the world.
Wow he is very good💪, also you did very well ❤️🩹,btw how too Parry a trust like his one?? His trust looks very fast and powerful.
Just gotta be faster. And faster than RC is a big ask
The best way to parry a thrust is the same as the best way to block a punch. Don't be there in the first place. ;)
