The rules in this one were simple, the knight can attake all bodyparts exept the faces and all techniques of historical combat were allowed. To make this possible he used training weapons from Dominus Gladius. dominusgladius...
The first fight was won by the peasants, because the knight tryed to hold back, but not in the second. If the peasents are afraid and dont charge all at once the knight can take one after another and win the fight. The crossbow wouldnt nessecary change the game, you still need a lucky shot and hit a weak spot with only one bolt.

@@innawoodsman Even worse when it is throwing daggers lol
@@123Juniiorr In fairness a thinner bladed throwing dagger (the more dart plumbata like ones) has a pretty good chance to find an opening it can push through to the fleshy goodness on many armoured targets. It won't go through the plate itself (under normal circumstances anyway) but going through the gaps, the mail or through a lighter bit of armour like many cloth armours it has a shot. It is actually more plausible a source of injury than the sword slash against any of those armours. The sword with a heavy enough swing behind that slash might just knock the wind out of you, could certainly knock you out with a hit to the head, but it isn't through those armours very likely at all to be actually causing you real damage (though a thrust on the other hand probably does have a better chance, likely halfswording for targeting accuracy).

There's a reason why peasant rebellions almost never worked out. (Well... there's many reasons, but this is one of them. I'm convinced feudalism would've never gone out of style if guns hadn't been invented.)
@@hebercluff1665 the reason why peasant rebellions never got to the point of overthrowing a kingdom, was mainly the lack of leadership and learned people, compared with Chinese peasant rebellions and the difference is abysmal.

The knight was more terrifying than I would have thought. It was like a steel monster walked into their camp.
They did. An actual knight would be even scarier, because they'd be moving better and be far more effective in both their own protection and offense. Obviously you have limits in something like this as you can't ACTUALLY be trying to end each other, but an actual knight trained for war from the time they were around 13-14 up until they were 20, at which point actual service to a Lord begins as a mounted warrior. Yes. A knight in full plate is an absolute NIGHTMARE for a few random dudes with very little protection like this. They're in shape, heavily armed, highly trained, and know every single inch of their armor, its openings, and how to defend them.
Unlike in movies, you cannot cut through hardened steel plate. That's just not happening, ever. Now imagine trying to thrust into the gaps in the armor on an actual trained knight, who is also trying to put you in the dirt forever, and who also knows exactly where those gaps are.
@@thisdude9363 ... and gaps which are still filled with chainmail and gambeson.
@@JoFa876 is it even reasonably possible for a trained knight in plate armor to die from a sword?
@@Chadius_Thundercock gotta take him to the ground and open the helmet visor. But while he is standing you have little to no chance.
@@Chadius_Thundercock Almost never. You'd have to get *extremely* lucky. Swords are romanticized and I love them, but they were the backup weapons of the medieval era. Ideally you want a bludgeoning weapon with sharp corners or spikes, or a spear with more reach than the knight's weapon so maybe you could get enough attempts to stab through a gap and also get through his gambeson or chain (or both). In all of history, it's most likely that more knights were killed with daggers than any other weapon, because if you can knock them down, you'll have the best chance at stabbing them in gaps around the helmet, or the groin.
Sure, some dudes definitely lost their spear or hammer, pulled out a sword, and got a lucky thrust that killed a knight - but as a general rule? Consider them sword-proof.
"I just shot his horse."
No wonder he's pissed, he has to walk to wherever he was going now in that heavy armor.
Or he can stop any1 with another horse and demand it, saying he will send the money for it later, or just kill the guy if he is not noble, no1 gonna say a thing.. he has armor that costs a fortune and a half, and had a knight trained horse, probably armored too... so yeah it mostly just revenge for Juan The Horse.
@SuzukiChen It’s more than just revenge. He’s the Landvoght, IE, the local bailiff/steward. He’s the lord’s administrator in the district. He’s responsible for collecting rents, enforcing the law and dispensing justice in the area. If there’s a gang of bandits in the district, it’s his duty to bring them to justice.
@@SuzukiChen I don't think you understand the dynamic and social relationships which existed in the time period. The peasants were loyal to the lord, the lord to their king. if the relationship went sour at any level, it was not good, and had knock on effects which could dramatically affect their rents, incomes, and standing of the nobles. So it was really in their best interest to have happy and healthy peasants. This idea the nobility was just blood thirsty tyrants, is tired and old.
Apparently medieval armour isn’t even that heavy, there was a video showcasing a guy doing flexible and agile movements in plated armour, if it had chain link in between the padding then maybe a bit heavier.
@@anecdotalpreacher3047 But for walking in the winter night I'd prefer to wear something warmer and more comfortable.
One of the details that I liked was how the knight could confidently walk right into the brigands' attacks and beat them with his mace or thrust with his halberd without needing to give a shit about their attacks. Very few depictions of armor really get across the sheer advantage of being able to ignore an attack to press home your own. You can't just pile onto someone and stab at him when he can also smack or stab you with zero fear.
The brigands really should have trained for this situation. That means a cooperative attack meant to get the knight onto the ground, then used that dagger they mentioned. But the knight knew they were not good for organised combat. Considering the military gear, they have there is a good chance some of them are deserters. Maybe their lack of discipline is why they deserted.
honestly yea, even just chainmail itself is pretty good but people knock it because it has a bunch of tiny holes
I actually thought he was being very smart the whole time and not immediately dismissing everything they had. And piling bodies on a knight actually is a viable strategy for pulling them down and putting a dagger in the visor or the joints. He just made sure they never got enough people on him for it to work.
La armadura es también un estado mental.
Ricks power armor comes to mind 😂
The vibe I get is that the knight is pissed he got super inconvenienced. Like a store clerk needing to clean up a mess of 4 kids.

There's something about how the Knight just appears from the woods that makes him look so menacing. @@nurgle333German for "film" or "cinema." A slang term in modern vernacular to mean a film, video game, or other visual media project is thrilling.
They had to jam the cross bow bc it would have killed the knight in one shot. But i like how the knight hit the crossbower first like it was personal. But you also have to ignore how you see the knight slip walking in the snow and ice for the story of how the knight took them all out to work out
@JohnSoh No, a crossbow of that size and strength isn't one shotting the knight. The bigger windlass drawn ones maybe, you can find tests on I think the Tod's workshop channel to see what they are actually capable of.
Seeing the knight emerge from the woods then eye up the bandits and ready himself to fight without even slowing his stride is probably the most unsettling thing I've seen in stuff like this.
Injecting this into reality, he would probably be quite worried about the crossbow. If the Xbow man has time to casually release the jam, it's bad for the knight. So he got there as fast as he could to apply pressure
@@edogelbard1901 Yeah, I'm surprised he didn't sprint to rush down the threat of the crossbow when he would have seen it being loaded. One good shot with that and the knight would have been severely injured.
@@TravisHi_YTat the same time though sprinting in and getting exhausted before the fighting even starts is just as risky. That's why charges usually start at a brisk walk/light job and only go into a full sprint for the last little stretch.

I like this so much. So often in movies people kinda slice through armor. And in games armor just gives you more "health". Here you can see both how formidable a fully armored knight is, and the fear he instills. "I just shot a stewards horse and he's coming" kinda sounds like the guy knows he fucked up lol.
The only real chance these guys could've had was if they all grabbed him and dropped him on the ground and held him while the knife guy looked for an opening between plates. But there's also psychology. Sure they would've beat him if they had done that, but each of them individually is too afraid to rush in.
Absolutley great video.
Thanks and great analysis,
Nobody want to take one for the team...
True. If they had been four professional men-at-arms instead of peasant militia, they would have been skilled enough to know how to deal with a knight and ended it that way. Just like Crecy. Instead the knight knew what he was dealing with--untrained men vs a man who'd been trained all his life for combat.
If you play the Baldurs Gate Games, or the Icewind Dale games, or the Pillars of Eternity games, armour decreases the likelihood of taking damage, rather than just giving you more health. If you're interested :)
Armor also hurts if it touches you and you're not also wearing it.

The lack of flashy spins makes this much for visceral. Just a few desperate, lesser trained and equipped men getting steam rolled by a steel beast. He basically just shrugged off their attacks since none of their weapons were made for crushing armor, dispatched each one systematically. Great stuff
Notably “weapons for crushing armour” wouldn’t have helped too dramatically, if you’re talking maces and the like. Impact weapons don’t necessarily do too much to a resisting armoured target, your best bet is to aim for weak articulations. The best way to defeat armour is having armour of your own; at that point you can more securely employ any variety of weapon. Swords are actually often preferable to single-handed maces and war hammers in foot combat, as they’re more dangerous up close where you can’t get in a big enough swing with a mace to do anything of worth.

@@goiterlanternbase i dont get what you said
I love how real that fight felt. No slick dodging or crazy kills just an uncoordinated series of strikes like a real fight ending with winners and losers.
Damn, really love how raw this feels. There’s some tactical organization that the peasants use to try to get an edge, but the armor still holds up. And yeah, getting clubbed by a mace is definitely a painful way to go out in battle. Then again, I’d be mad enough to use a mace if someone had shot my horse.
as a tactical approach, i would have ordered my peasant kin to spread out around the knight, and whoever is facing the knight is just to gain the attention of the knights strikes and evade them. Then at the moment the knights tries to strike, the others behind pounce and grapple the knight to the ground, then use daggers on him. pretty sure we, the peasants, would win 9 out of 10 with that tactic if the knight had a poleaxe and mace.
from the knight perspective, given the peasants have minimal to no armour, i'd have preferred an arming sword. it's short, quick, and can't be grabbed easily, which should allow the knight to keep killing even when grappled to the ground.
@@ericaugust1501spreading out to surround the knight is harder than you’d initially think. It’s actually really hard to coordinate with the others on when and who should advance in, but once someone does commit, they gotta avoid getting hit, even by swings that weren’t even initially meant for them.
He probably had to euthanize his horse too, so he was likely super pissed off.
@@ericaugust1501That sounds good, but remember that the knight is a professional soldier who trains constantly and would certainly charge the nearest flanking guy before he could get far enough around. That guy would then either be dead or a human shield.
@@Specter_1125 That is why you need to train for that BEFORE such a battle occur. Hand a modern soldier a box with a javelin to use against a tank and no prior training and it is likely that its over before they even figured out how to get it out of the box.
This is probably the best depiction of a real world 1 versus many I’ve ever seen; if the one guy is better equipped and better skilled then no one actually wants to go toe to toe with him, so all of them are hanging back and looking for an opening, giving the outnumbered guy breathing room. Way more believable than just having one or two guys run in at once and angling the camera so that you can’t see the others just standing around.
The fight was unchoreographed, so it's not scripted. Of course the fighters acted as dead after get hit withe the hard rubber weapons, but the fighting is kind of real.
Your remark is on point. There is an old proverb in Japanese swordsmanship (and the same thing must be taught in HEMA as well) that "crossing swords is hell, but paradise is one step forward", interpreted as "not committing is going to get you killed, but going in / crossing the distance (and destroying the enemy's distance) is the way to win".
I agree. It is also a testament to reputation and the psychological effect it can have. Half of the winning of the fight for the knight was the peasants didn't expect to win.
In a fight like that, nobody wants to be the sacrificial lamb. That mace work looked wicked.
@@dequitemhonestly, if you were going for realism, they acted dead a little too quickly if you ask me.People fight through getting stabbed, and if you’re fighting for your life, one poke is not going to stop you

I would too the others are just an inconvenience
That sent a shiver down my spine. Felt like I was watching something recorded from many centuries ago and unfolded how I expected a knight vs peasants to actually unfold. It was similar to how soldiers in WWI would have felt facing early tanks that rolled across no man's land, their weapons mostly useless against them. A knight was basically the equivalent of a tank in those times and only a few weapons could even threaten it.. was chilling.
I am not sure about the tank reference, because the swords and spears are defenetly effective weapons against armored opponentsy but of course there was no good anti tank weapon to that time.
@@dequitem when one puts together the vastly superior body armor along with the mor extensive training then a Knight of this time is very much the equivalent to a modern era tank.
takes a lot more to get through the armor, needs to be hit in weak spots of said armor to take any real damage AND can dish out unholy amounts of damage to anyone around.
so yeah, a Tank..
In the Battle of Agincourt when the French knights charged into the muddy British lines of archers, men of arms, and knights. The English and Welsh peasant longbow archers were trained to go into close combat against knights and to use whatever pointy weapon they had at hand whether it be a dagger, a sharp stick or wood or metal, or their arrow and to attack at the French knight's manhood, pluck their eyes, and whatever opening they can find in the armor and it worked well. The modern day or ww2/ww1 equivalent would be soldiers going up to a tank and placing a grenade in whatever weak spot they can find
In their first battles, british tanks performed poorly, mobility and reliability were not good and the armor barely bulletproof, still vulnerable to artillery and mortars. Brigands facing a mounted knight would have been like insurgents with AKs facing an armored humvee with machine gun.

I do admit, I was half-expecting a man to get out of the tent at the end, like : "Sorry I overslept, why are you so quie-OH SHIT"
So glad the algorithm caught this one, the production quality on it is incredible!
"What about the Steward?"
"Put on your armor!"
That line hit my SOUL. Well done. Great fight, great storytelling.
The dialogue at the beginning definitely built tension; now we know why they are fighting; context is key. Also, it was brutal, the first chap went down wounded from a single strike - and the knight just beat them repeatedly until death; that was very unsentimental and workmanlike.
It was his professional afterall
I feel like the first guy who went down basically lost the fight for the team. He started by grabbing a sword instead of a spear or polearm so the knight had a reach advantage on him. He then gets hit almost immediately which makes it harder for the peasants to dance around the knight striking from a distance. For the peasants to have a chance they probably needed to surround the knight and let him exhaust himself while they focused on staying alive.
@@ethank5059 All the knight needed was a solid leg shot on any of the peasants to take em out, like with the 2nd guy. He can swing his polearm more aggressive and tank a few spear stabs knowing that wont kill/hurt him unless he was supremely unlucky. Whittle the numbers down a bit and all he needed was his mace to whack em all to death during the melee struggle. Only chance the peasants had was to try to tackle and immobile the knights arms when they had 4 dudes, but good luck charging a dude swinging a polearm.
Honestly this is excellent quality. Great acting talent. But the best cinematography always takes so much money, time and talent with cameras... We all only get to see what the perspective of the camera lens is. I cannot imagine the fear of seeing a walking man-tank armed with multiple weapons approach you knowing he means death. It must be like seeing a Terminator approach.
If the footmen wanted a fighting chance against the noble knight, they would encircle the knight, and the one facing the knight’s back would try to stab him in between de gaps of plate armour. If the knight would rush one of them, they would have to expand the circle by falling back, leaving the knight to keep chasing them, eventually tiring the knight out and keep hitting his blind spot. Given that the footmen are demoralized because of the cold, and probably did not have a full stomach, my verdict is that this scene is very realistic. Well done.
Yes, but every knight was aware of the gaps in his armor and know, how to protect them and how to avoid encircling. Rush forward, take one or two out of the fight very quick, demoralize and then deal with the others. Knights are traint for this since they are kids.
PS: Sorry, no native speaker
The knight received at least 2 spear stabs on each armpit, they started to be more mindful of distance and gaps after 2 of their buddies died, also the knight might be out of combat for a long time if he survives his wounds.
@@Zekyb0y Infection would like a word with the good Sir Knight!
@@andybassman99 Infection is also a reason for the brigands to be as cautious (fearful) as they were. With near-zero armour, a single slice from the knight's polearm could bean debilitating illness or death. Brigands were basically armed bullies that preyed on the defenseless. The only chance they would have against a knight would be a well-planned ambush (which this clearly was not).
Because the iron clad knight doesn't feel the cold most of all? If he is a *noble* knight he's probably undertrained too, just having to serve one month a year of mandatory campaigning, more likely to die of camping than in a fight.
I love how realistic this feels. The acting is not exaggerated nor dramatic, it looks genuine and natural and the interactions are as trivial as life itself. I could really picture something like this happening back in the day. Marvelous job 👏👏👏👏

I'd love to see more of this make its way into major films. There's real tension here, and even if we're rooting for the knight, there's not a guarantee he will win against a multitude of opponents. We get to see the brutal, ugly nature of a real fight and can still showcase the skill and expertise of the "hero" while placing him in legitimate danger. Couple that with wide angle, open cinematography that doesn't rely on tricks to sell the fight and you're left with an honest depiction that keeps the audience on the edge of their seat.

ehhhh
I don't think an armored knight would chase down a single peasant back to their camp in the first place. Cool fight but this is an unrealistic scenario as the knight has no idea how many people he's facing.
Likely scenario is he goes back to his lord and brings backup to mop the peasants up.
Unbelievable how fast warfare technology has advanced in only a month
Which explains perfectly why you don't see realistic fights in movies. they don't look good and fancy, they just look like brutal brawls that are over in a minute and are dangerous AF to shoot even when you know what you are doing and you take every possible precaution to avoid serious injuries. 1:40 I know that stab was perfectly under control, but it still made me cringe so hard; looks like the poor dude was only wearing a gambeson 😱
Maybe combat in movies should be like this. Terrifying. Might make some of us less violent.
Realistic hand-to-hand fights would also be a lot less drawn out. Few people have taken a punch or kick to the head or gut, and even fewer remained standing and able to fight and defend themselves afterward. (This refers to real fights between randos trying to actually hurt each other, not sport fights between professionals trying to go the distance for points or KO)
The King displayed this excellently, I think. the fights in this movie were brutal, messy, and tough to watch.
probably because uneducated people would say it's to fast and not flashy enough same with all the castle attacks they call "Sieges"
A slow paced movie that builds up tension and ends its fights in a quick way would be nice to watch. I guess fights are somewhat like that, the end is usually anticlimatic...
The intro really helped set the mood and helped see the knight from the frightening perspective of the peasants. And how fast the fight was over. Really helps you understand how trained knights were the cutting edge of military technology at the time.
A modern rendition of this film would be 4 toyota Hiluxes vs a Panther KF51. Or 4 Cesnas encountering an F150.
What fight ? 😅
Ford 150's are tough but even so I doubt they catch the cesnas.
Knights ruled the battlefield until technology provided an equalizer--the firearm. Any group of idiots can point their guns at an armored enemy group and erase their years of melee combat training.
I love how it shows the true nature of armor. Movies and video games make it seem that a person would stand a chance. When in reality a fully dressed up man in armor would take a lot of effort and skill from anybody to take out. I also like how they strike for his neck and armpits. Showing how a person would’ve truly attempted to fight, if they knew those were weak points.
This is so beautifully realistic, like hit from mace downs a man. Also great scenery.
But they are not dead, only some brocken rips and arms 😅.

Badass on another level, I hope stuff like this gets introduced into modern filmmaking at some point more. How bad is the visibility inside a full plate-armour?
I love how this video showcases how much of an unstoppable force a fully armed and armored knight is. It's like a juggernaut, a full class above any competition.
absolutely love the no dramatic sound effects, the eerie silence, the sickening realistic thuds. it really brings home the sheer weight a knight actually carried on the battlefield. also, i love how the fights were over very quickly. realistically, you take a single pretty much silent poke from a halberd and you're down bleeding out and in a lot of pain. take a smack from a mace and you're bone is broken, now you're in agony. reality is so much more menacing than fantasy.
this is a damn MASTERPIECE dude damn if the acting skills are on top

There is something about how the knight just appears, almost out of the corner of your eye. No fanfare, like a movie would have. Just steadfastly walking forward. It perfectly evokes this double feeling it being both just a man in armor, and the singular terror that he actually represents.

I think that armour actually adds a really interesting aspect to combat that could be used by medieval fiction writers/movies. Like, a knight might feel quite invincible in his armour, as seen here, but he slips/the peasants get a hold of his limbs/charge him together/he's hurt through the slits by a bolt (least likely scenario but possible), and all of his sudden his easy victory turns into a horrifying, drawn out struggle for life as he fights to keep the numerically superiors peasants at bay, like hungry wolves closing in on an injured animal... Yeah, you could work with that I think.
The knight got strapped into the armor, it's reasonable to think he can be got out of it. More difficult without his cooperation.
I think the fiction I've seen that does the equivalent to this best is Stormlight Archive? They get magical plate armor where the only way to really hurt someone is to throw them off a cliff or stab them through the eye slot and the terror it inspires when anyone with that armor shows up is very much realized. Main difference is that armor assists the wearer so they have much more effective strength so the slowness isn't as much of a thing.
@@fanushkah Full plate doesn't slow down the wearer almost at all, especially if you train in it and are used to it. You saw the knight in the video, correct? He was moving at almost the exact same speed as everybody else. So the anti-weight aspect in Stormlight Archive would really only help with stamina preservation as obviously even a well trained fighter will tire out slightly faster with all that additional weight. Unless their armor was made from something much heavier than steel or was significantly thicker than plate, thus much heavier.
@@RiskOfBaer No, when I say "much more effective strength" I meant leaping up cliff sides, making your own hand holds. Not just less effective weight stopping you from being tired as fast. Good points though.
@@fanushkahfantasy power armour, basically? i love it
This is really impressive. Very well shot, and the brutal realism on display here makes the short surprisingly disturbing. Loved it- would love to see more.
the Main Battle Tank of the time....these 3 minutes of video where more enjoyable that most of what Hollywood spews out nowadays. Great work!
Peasants should have just run away. They had already killed his horse.
They literally could’ve all gotten away. They’re not wearing much armour, if at all. The knight is still wearing a couple dozen extra lbs and already exerted himself from the chase. Realistically, the brigands would’ve fled.
The knight is likely better conditioned.
But moreover, flee for what? They leave their equipment and supplies in the winter in that part of Europe? They’re as good as dead. Maybe they could have taken over a farm. Maybe they’d run into a stretch of forest and free to death.
Meanwhile the knight finds their camp, eats their food. And they’re re-enacting the Pine Barrens episode of the Sopranos.
Their odds against the knight are near 100%. All 4 rush him down to the ground from all sides and game over. The weight of his armor and 4 men om him results in a slow can opening. This is very unrealistic video.
@@DetergentChemtrails Wrong. The knight is also in motion. It encumbers you less than you think.
This also requires people to be far more suicidal than they usually are. Your average person doesn’t run headlong into a fight. Especially if they’re untrained. This isn’t a video game.
Seeing one of your buddies go down will probably make you pause even for a moment.
Moreover, grappling is easier when you’re heavier due to your armor. And y’know. You know how to grapple.
You’re right on paper though. Someone just has a close to 100% percent chance of being thrust or cleaved by that halberd. In this scenario, would you prefer it to be you?
@@TheSilkKing1 It's common sense. Heavy dude will hit the ground hard. Slow surround and move in the moment first person blocks or gets hit. The knight wont have a chance to swing again. Small knives will open him like a tin can.
Or ... just enter water nearby. He wont have the guts to follow.
This was actually really good. I love that he had a polearm at first. Those were much more commonly used than swords. A lot of people don’t realize how effective armor really was. You were near invincible unless someone was able to sneak a dagger in between the plates. I really enjoyed this. Great job!
Really, really impressive, indeed for a group of peasants, brigands, thugs or else one experienced noble in their full armour, even if lonesome, would be as a demon approaching, you captured that essence quite well apart from the fact the armour could spare the wearer plenty more mistakes that the others could not afford, truly wonderful! also I have seen you are getting a japanese set from iron mountain armory, can't wait to see some with that as well!

Oh my gosh, this is absolutely so amazing. I really love it and if there was a full movie of something like this it would be absolutely splendid. Its super true how these brigands would just get pretty easily destroyed, but I like how they still showed skill and prowess whilst fighting. I think that it is possible for them to have achieved some sort of haubergeon, which they should of course give to the most skilled of the bunch. I can't imagine how horrifying it would be if those Knights who really trained to kill people ending up on the opposing side. Take Sir Peirre Terrail for example, killed 200 men, all by himself. He would absolutely maul so many people without them even standing a chance. Or Sir William Stanley as well, he killed so many actual armoured nobles, he was one of the best soldiers of all time, if not the best. I loved this so much, if there was more, I would watch it for sure.
Wouldn’t it be so cool for Halloween if he found a way to make 1 knight vs 10 zombies look realistic.
Wow, that moment he came out of the woods in full armor. Like the Terminator. A fully armored Knight must have been terrifying for regular soldiers.
Realistically those peasants would probably try running away and kiting the knight instead of excepting the fight on his terms.
Well, they didn't and it ended bad for them.
