@@gooseegg3439 See, while that is a good point, you have to consider that maybe he would’ve been on that plane for leisurely business, and that he might’ve said something about signing with them after already being there. I think it was the correct for the Jays to keep their mouths shut. Not their place to speak on something they aren’t 100% sure of. All this plane business was just a bunch of idiots on the internet making stuff up.
Not just the Jays, but the Dodgers. Yes, they got their man, but they were forced to drastically overpay him because he made them think he was considering the Jays.
You can be passionate about your team without dragging someone's name through the mud. The most amazing part of all this is that Jerry Hairsiton will build a friendship and bond with Ohtani. I went to see him play this year. He hit a homer on his first at bat and they basically pitched around him the rest of the weekend. The Angels had nobody behind him so he was easy to avoid. I don't think he ever got batted in. Hopefully the Dodgers have a bigger bat next in the lineup.

3:10 This is such an emotionally-charged, irrational take on things that could've irresponsibly fomented undue vitriol against a totally innocent party. The only ones who knew for sure that Shohei Ohtani was not on that plane was Shohei and his camp and Robert Herjavec and his camp. The only thing Jays' brass would've known is that they didn't orchestrate that flight. Why was it their responsibility to put out their SPECULATION to quell a rumor that was born of someone else's SPECULATION? If I had to guess, when the rumor got traction, folks in the Jays' organization started contacting one another wondering if the left hand was doing something the right hand wasn't aware of. It would've taken a while for them to fully confirm that the plane arrangements were not of their doing. And it would've taken longer still to be comfortable definitively asserting that Shohei was not on that plane. For all they knew, Shohei was on that plane for some reason. They certainly weren't going to contact Shohei directly and risk badgering this coveting free agent. And unless they had access to airport personnel who was willing to disclose the identity of that VIP passenger, they were flying relatively blind too. They likely ASSUMED it wasn't him. But again, you don't combat speculation with speculation. Unless someone within their organization played a mischievous role in helping to plant the original seed, they were blameless in it all. And they shouldn't be lambasted because of the rantings of a talking head who was butt-hurt about the whole fiasco.
2019: Fans are chasing around what they thought was Kawhi’s transport across Toronto 2023: Fans are tracking Ohtani’s supposed private jet. I didn’t get caught up in this frenzy with Ohtani as i vividly recall 2019. I’m honestly shocked very few learned their lesson from that experience
The 'rumor' didn't run for 7 hours unfettered. You need to do your research just as your fans do. Yahoo Sports sent a follow up message about an hour after Morosi's post stating that Ohtani was at his home in Southern California. Also, Bob Nightengale sent a post at 2:11p stating that Ohtani is NOT on a flight to Toronto. And if you still want to believe that fans shouldn't be fooled by Social Media, there was post around the same time, supposedly from Jeff Passan, stating that Ohtani had agreed to sign with the Angels. Sid needs to get over himself.
When a deal includes deferred money, that contract is discounted, Ohtani will be worth 40-50 million against their payroll, after all taxes and fees, he might take home 20-30 million
@@Dennis-ff2pf 1- straight line: 37% Fed, 2.35% Medicare, 13.3% CA, 1.1% State disability = 53.75% tax rate 2- Sports players get taxed based off the location of the stadium played. Likely will reduced the CA tax rate by 1/4ish. He'll be right near 50% flat. 3- Have no idea what his agent fee is
A very rough calc. of the Present Value of that contract, as of Jan 1/2024, discounted at 5% and ignoring taxes, agent & lawyer fees entirely, comes to $346 million. That is based on the Dodgers paying Ohtani $2 MM/yr for years 1 to 10, and $68 MM/yr from years 11 to 20.
Dodgers probably would’ve paid $800 million for him if they had too. They don’t care. They’ll make all that money back in no time at all. That’s why I knew that he wouldn’t sign with anyone else. Dodgers checked off every box for him
Why Shohei Ohtani will be worth every penny of $700 million contract for Los Angeles Dodgers Ohtani is basically Taylor Swift in baseball spikes. Shohei Ohtani is joining the Dodgers on a 10-year contract. Every Dodgers game will now be broadcast live in Japan. They will have billboards touting Ohtani all over Southern California. There will be lucrative Japanese advertising in the rotating signs behind home plate at Dodger Stadium. There will be sponsorships. Merchandise. Jerseys. Caps. Licensing. You name it, Ohtani will be on it. Sure, $700 million is a lot of money, but you know what, Ohtani is going to be worth nearly $50 million a year to the Dodgers in marketing and licensing. Ohtani brought in $25 million a year to the Angels, and with the Dodgers, that should be doubled. Ohtani already is making friends by letting everyone know that he’s deferring an “unprecedented" portion of his contract to provide the Dodgers enough flexibility to be competitive as possible and add even more stars, with the team still pursuing Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto. USA Today
@@DW-op7ly25 Million is old. He brought in 25-35MM to the franchise and 2023 numbers are not out but estimated to close to 40MM because of global purchase of WBC Championship. Dodgers are bigger market than the Angels so automatically they will sell more. 40+MM will be the norm
Morosi had plenty of wrong intels too eager to be the first breaking the news ego won, Passan is the best in biz. Also lots of ppl easily crossed off Dodgers not knowing the long history shared with Ohtani they’re the first who scouted him back hs wanting to sign him and his physician is a Dodgers team doctor etc.
If all of Otani’s earnings are invested at 7.2% under this contract it’s basically the same as him getting paid 35 million for the next 10 years. This contract gives the Dodgers the flexibility to beef up their pitching with free agents which will build a dynasty for the next 5 years or more. This will win championships and build Otanis legacy. The Blue Jays likely offered more money (because money today is worth more than money 10 years from now) but Otani wanted to go to the Dodgers. His chances of winning a World Series is better there and more championships means more fans and endorsements. He also has more access to the Japanese viewership if he is on the West Coast. The Jays were just used as leverage and they never had a chance.
This will win championships?? Pump the brakes. This is baseball, not basketball or football with a great QB. What did the Angels win with Ohtani AND Trout? This makes the Dodgers a better team, but Shohei may never pitch again.

“Reputable people”…. Okay bud. Are these the same people going on air saying Ohtani would sign with Toronto because the Toronto weather is better than LA?
Sid should understand well it was Friday, and Jays personnel was almost finish their day at noon, and prepare to take off for TGIF. I don't think anyone from the FO, to the PR team would like to do overtime work on Friday...
If you pay these guys too much money, they’re not going to put in 100%. They’ll leave it up to their fellow players which means they’re going to lose the game but their bank accounts are going to continue winning.
Ohtani doesn’t care about money as much as he does winning. That’s why he signed with a MLB team before he was 25, and why the majority of his contract now will be deferred, allowing the Dodgers to keep adding pieces to build around him.
Believe it or not it wasn't really about the money, well it was but Ohtani's two major reasons for signing with the Dodgers all along was he loves California and wanted to play on a playoff contending team. Sure the Dodgers have made the playoffs consistently over the years but they've also choked a lot in the post season even with all that talent. Ohtani isn't going to guarantee they'll do any better over the life of his contract especially with his ability to pitch again still up in the air.
Remember this fact: Dodgers scouting team began the strong love call when Shohei was playing at Hanamaki Higashi High School, visiting Japan and meeting with Shohei himself. Shohei made an entry of Dodgers name on his baseball goal sheet at that time. But when Shohei announced his challenge to MLB and again they sent another love call, there was no DH rule in the N League. This time, Shohei's decision is to return his gratitude toward Dodgers unchanged love for his talent and to be able to continue his two-way play with the team that loves him so mich for so long. For Shohei, "trust" and "respect" make a big difference.
If the Jays money was not deferred by 10 years like the Dodgers then their contract was actually better financially for Otani even if you assume a measly 4 or 5% interest rate.
It’s not fair play to the Dodgers if they defer 1/2 his salary to avoid the luxury tax. This should be limited or eliminated, but shouldn’t be allowed to stand as is.

Her being a tour guide and thinking this was not a common occurrence. So she and people around her were speculating it was Ohtani

BREAKING NEWS: Shohei Ohtani Signs With The Dodgers l ALEX CURRY & MONSE BOLANOS
Fox Sports Radio
Exactly
Lol... this is comical.
Cause if Ohtani or his agent was coming, the Jays would have gotten a call that they were on their way to Toronto to sign or hash out a deal. I doubt very much that they would just walk into the Jays head office on Friday unexpectedly and say "Sorry to barge in unannounced, but we'd like to sign with you..."
Syd is triggered on this one
CAA and Ohtani played the Jays like a fiddle! There was no way he was coming
Not just the Jays, but the Dodgers. Yes, they got their man, but they were forced to drastically overpay him because he made them think he was considering the Jays.
Is anyone honestly surprised this Jays brass fell short? This is what they do, they're the best at it
You can be passionate about your team without dragging someone's name through the mud. The most amazing part of all this is that Jerry Hairsiton will build a friendship and bond with Ohtani. Where he will go into the hall of fame wearing a Dodger uniform. It's okay to hate the Dodgers, but to insult a man, directly that's not right.
That guy made a fool of himself and now feels dumb
The Jay aren't going to talk to you Sid... You are nobody.
Obviously, John Morosi is at fault.
He is mlb's official journalist.
He's not the only reporter that made a fault statement. There was also the one from Dodgers Nation that said he signed with the Jays, and another reporter who said that there was a press conference at 6pm. Both of which were BBWAA journalists so they had credibility.
@@gooseegg3439 Sounds like a herd mentality when it came to reporting the story, but no one staked out the airport, Rogers Centre, etc? I mean, this potentially was the biggest Toronto story in 30 years, and one that you'd have to get right.
I don't know how I've done it, but somehow I've managed not to see this guy play a single game. It's a miracle that I'm still alive.
😂😂
I went to see him play this year. He hit a homer on his first at bat and they basically pitched around him the rest of the weekend. The Angels had nobody behind him so he was easy to avoid. I don't think he ever got batted in. Hopefully the Dodgers have a bigger bat next in the lineup.
I'm from Europe so I've never seen a baseball game period, and from the few highlights I've seen on the Internets it'll probably stay that way. Like, table tennis and badminton are bigger sports than baseball here.

@okyouknowwhatever yeah, I know what you mean cuz it's like badminton and table tennis are bigger here than that European football thing, but then I'm just from North America..
What I don't like about most media is nobody is taking this story like a bull by the damn horns. What the hell happened? Who in the hell lied to Marosi? Why in the hell did that source lie? Either that source was a prank or it was to leverage negotiation dollars.
I get Sid's argument, and it makes sense. He's right, someone in Jays leadership knew and should have said something to quell the hysteria.

The Jays got finessed worse than the Padres when they announced the Scherzer signing 🤣
Toronto offered the same contract as well!
It was BS. Jays let rumour go on purpose to sell tickets. The home opener sold out in seconds and they probably sold 5000-10000 season tickets during those 7 hours. It was a shady move and I’m a peeved that they allowed it to happen. They should allow refunds for anyone buying on Friday.
Bingo
This "greatest player of all time" stuff is crazy. He's great yes. He's unique yes. Greatest of all time? Seriously? Cone on He's a novelty act cause he pitches AND hits. He might not pitch great again. If he doesn't He's a really good DH.
I'm here for the tears.
The Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is half Japanese, his mother is Japanese and African American father, and he was born in Japan.
2019: Fans are chasing around what they thought was Kawhi’s transport across Toronto
2023: Fans are tracking Ohtani’s supposed private jet.
I didn’t get caught up in this frenzy with Ohtani as i vividly recall 2019. I’m honestly shocked very few learned their lesson from that experience
Paying someone 50,000 dollars each time he steps up to bat is sickness.
@bruce, Ohtani is more than a baseball player. He is an investment. The TV rights to Japan will bring in a billion.
You're acting like this is new to professional sports. At the end of the day, athletes get paid for playing a child's game.
@@deleqtronica8733, its a beautiful thing, isn't it.
Sid is such a dramatic little child. Im so glad hes no longer on Tim & Friends. His takes were terrible...
Jerry Hairston is LMAO at you!!! 😂🎉

When a deal includes deferred money, that contract is discounted, Ohtani will be worth 40-50 million against their payroll, after all taxes and fees, he might take home 20-30 million
All the taxes in California add up to 65 % .
@@Dennis-ff2pf
1- straight line: 37% Fed, 2.35% Medicare, 13.3% CA, 1.1% State disability = 53.75% tax rate
2- Sports players get taxed based off the location of the stadium played. Likely will reduced the CA tax rate by 1/4ish. He'll be right near 50% flat.
3- Have no idea what his agent fee is
@@HKim0072 most agents take 4% of the total amount.
The Jays didn’t say anything because they knew they were out on Ohtani and they were happy to see the Dodgers hosed for another 100 million.
Sound like jealousy to me.
Ahhhhh Salty
Dodgers probably would’ve paid $800 million for him if they had too. They don’t care. They’ll make all that money back in no time at all. That’s why I knew that he wouldn’t sign with anyone else. Dodgers checked off every box for him
Why Shohei Ohtani will be worth every penny of $700 million contract for Los Angeles Dodgers
Ohtani is basically Taylor Swift in baseball spikes.
Also lots of ppl easily crossed off Dodgers not knowing the long history shared with Ohtani they’re the first who scouted him back hs wanting to sign him and his physician is a Dodgers team doctor etc.
it's the worst contract in sports history, makes dipietro look like a laugher.
700 million American is damn close to 1 billion in Canadian

Sid roars on in an effort to promote himself. Again, the mouth that ROARS !
he was never coming here. his agents just used the jays as leverage to squeeze every last penny out of the dodgers
hi sid yes you are correct that the blue jays insid people should came forward like you said and my opinion i go to the other side of what you say i blame the agent for othani for not speaking up to soften the blow to the blue jay fans
Love seeing these sad Canadians....Nobody was going to that dump of a team.
I feel him.
Hey Sid! Did you apologize to your daddy Jerry Hairston Jr?
Believe it or not it wasn't really about the money, well it was but Ohtani's two major reasons for signing with the Dodgers all along was he loves California and wanted to play on a playoff contending team. Sure the Dodgers have made the playoffs consistently over the years but they've also choked a lot in the post season even with all that talent. Ohtani isn't going to guarantee they'll do any better over the life of his contract especially with his ability to pitch again still up in the air.
They won back in 2020.
@lambo2655, the Blue Jays can't make it out of the first round when they do make it. Sounds like sour grapes. Only time will tell.
And that's why he's deferring payments RN. I feel Shohei just wants to win regardless
Heard Jays was at north of 600M.. bet Dodgers topped to 700m either Friday or early Saturday...
Go cry to your mama. #BleedBlue
@@FlanMasterT.V I am not just talking about this deal but the idea of deferring money to avoid the rules of the salary cap. But thanks for your grade 3 level response. I know you are but what am I contribution to a serious topic.
What's really sad is people who are making average income or less tossing out their opinions about the millions pro athletes make like they can somehow relate. We are not part of their world
There are retired MLB players still getting paid by way of deferred deals, and Ohtani may still be playing during the back half of that contract.

I am loosing faith in Jays leadership. poorly managed Manoah situation, Soto to Yanks, Champman gonna walk, Manager of the Jays a little to Raw to be running a Playoff roster, Ohtani situation. I do feel now we were being played by Ohtani camp ( not Shoehei himself, he probably just let his agent do his thing and they did it well using us to raise the Dodgers offer )
The jay’s actually made the dodgers overpay. There were very few team even considering 600 million and nobody was in the 700 million range
No Dodgers don’t need to be manipulated to pay! They have been chasing Ohtani since he was 15 years old. There is a long history behind them that never came to fruition until now. And this time Dodgers we’re not going to let Shohei go. 700MM is nothing! Shohei thinks the amount is ridiculous, even said it (read Verduccis article in SI)
It’s just the media and the speed of information goes too fast in this days..
You're losing faith because the Jay's weren't able to land possibly the greatest baseball player ever? It's a miracle they were in the running in the first place
