Ohtani was always going to sign with the Dodgers. Most people who follow baseball have known that Ohtani was going to the Dodgers as far back as about 2 years ago when they started shaving money off their payroll in anticipation of Ohtani reaching free agency.

    • @onespeedlite
      @onespeedlite 11 місяців тому

You're wrong. Yes, the Dodgers let good players go in order to lower it's payroll to sign Ohtani. However, Ohtani had not made a decision about playing for the Dodgers or any other team. Ohtani's agent himself said they told the Angel's about the Dodger's offer to give them a chance to match. The Angel's owner turned down the chance. This is understandable since Ohtani had Tommy John surgery for the second time. He didn't want to pay $700M for a player who may or may not pitch at the same high level again. How you or anybody would have known when Ohtani didn't know himself?

Don’t vilify Shohei! He has nothing to do with this. In Tom Verduccis interview with Dodgers executives, they talk about how Shohei is not interested in the dollar and even expressed ‘ridiculous ness’ of such amount. The Dodgers became even more enamored by Ohtanis sincerity and became convinced this is the guy they wanted regardless. Dodgers been chasing Ohtani since he was 15 years old. CAA don’t have to manipulate to have the Guggenheim group to pay. It’s just a sum Ohtani is worth. On and off the field for baseball.

Ohtani cares so little about money that he offered to defer his entire salary but his agent told him that's not legal under the MLB/players agreement, so he ended up deferring 97% of his salary. I suspect the Jays offered at least $600 million, maybe closer to the Dodgers' offer. It's clear that Ohtani thought long and hard about it and actually had the Jays as one of his final two teams to choose between. He liked the Jays situation that much, for what it's worth to Jays fans.

This dude had a HUGE part in what happened to Toronto fans. As a reporter, you need to be partial and patient with all news. He unfortunately got caught up in the hype of wanting Ohtani be a Blue Jay. Add to it the rant he went on comparing Toronto to LA and clearly he added to the hysteria. And there is NO COMPARISON between LA and Toronto. Jerry Hairston did the same but the big difference is that here in LA, there are a ton of other things to focus on. Dodger fans are rabid, as are most fan bases, but in sports alone, you have the Lakers and the LA Kings to shift to. News and bad news, at that, never last long in LA. If the city thing was the determining factor, then Ohtani chose correctly. Sid...you were a part of it. Jerry was a part of it, but more so in Toronto than in LA.

Once offical accounts tweeted then I started to believe it. Saturday La reports still said he would sign in Toronto that’s what I believed then he posted on instagram that he signed in La. I truly hope everyone learned something from this. Such a mess. I also agree with Sid that the Jays should have said something when things went nuts.

People won't learn anything from this mess because they obviously didn't learn anything from the Kawhi Leonard mess in 2019. Remember the Toronto media had helicopters following Kawhi around and Toronto fans were stalking a hotel where Kawhi was meeting with Ujiri? Toronto sports fans are the most emotionally unstable in all of sports. They will get all maniacal and frenzied when the next big sports free agent comes along, and then will get totally depressed when the free agent picks another team.

And why would you put out ANY info on Ohtani when it might jeopardize your chance of signing him??

There is this Dodgers UA-cam fan site. Where one of the UA-camrs stated to the other, that on that Friday when Ohtani was supposed to be on that plane flying to Toronto She was told on the Wednesday prior (if there is no reason for you to be here don’t come in kind of thing) and that all tours were cancelled.
Her being a tour guide and thinking this was not a common occurrence. So she and people around her were speculating it was Ohtani
While we were following a plane
In a situation like this you are going to put out your best possible offer day 1.
Knowing others teams are going to do the same.
I’m guessing it as some Dodgers insiders getting hold of the information and trolling Jays fans not being allowed to post the truth about his signing

3:10 This is such an emotionally-charged, irrational take on things that could've irresponsibly fomented undue vitriol against a totally innocent party. The only ones who knew for sure that Shohei Ohtani was not on that plane was Shohei and his camp and Robert Herjavec and his camp. The only thing Jays' brass would've known is that they didn't orchestrate that flight. Why was it their responsibility to put out their SPECULATION to quell a rumor that was born of someone else's SPECULATION?
If I had to guess, when the rumor got traction, folks in the Jays' organization started contacting one another wondering if the left hand was doing something the right hand wasn't aware of. It would've taken a while for them to fully confirm that the plane arrangements were not of their doing. And it would've taken longer still to be comfortable definitively asserting that Shohei was not on that plane.
For all they knew, Shohei was on that plane for some reason. They certainly weren't going to contact Shohei directly and risk badgering this coveting free agent. And unless they had access to airport personnel who was willing to disclose the identity of that VIP passenger, they were flying relatively blind too. They likely ASSUMED it wasn't him. But again, you don't combat speculation with speculation. Unless someone within their organization played a mischievous role in helping to plant the original seed, they were blameless in it all. And they shouldn't be lambasted because of the rantings of a talking head who was butt-hurt about the whole fiasco.

Ohtani is basically Taylor Swift in baseball spikes.
Shohei Ohtani is joining the Dodgers on a 10-year contract.
Every Dodgers game will now be broadcast live in Japan. They will have billboards touting Ohtani all over Southern California. There will be lucrative Japanese advertising in the rotating signs behind home plate at Dodger Stadium. There will be sponsorships. Merchandise. Jerseys. Caps. Licensing. You name it, Ohtani will be on it.
Sure, $700 million is a lot of money, but you know what, Ohtani is going to be worth nearly $50 million a year to the Dodgers in marketing and licensing. Ohtani brought in $25 million a year to the Angels, and with the Dodgers, that should be doubled.
Ohtani already is making friends by letting everyone know that he’s deferring an “unprecedented" portion of his contract to provide the Dodgers enough flexibility to be competitive as possible and add even more stars, with the team still pursuing Japanese pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

If all of Otani’s earnings are invested at 7.2% under this contract it’s basically the same as him getting paid 35 million for the next 10 years. This contract gives the Dodgers the flexibility to beef up their pitching with free agents which will build a dynasty for the next 5 years or more. This will win championships and build Otanis legacy. The Blue Jays likely offered more money (because money today is worth more than money 10 years from now) but Otani wanted to go to the Dodgers. His chances of winning a World Series is better there and more championships means more fans and endorsements. He also has more access to the Japanese viewership if he is on the West Coast. The Jays were just used as leverage and they never had a chance.

Believe it or not it wasn't really about the money, well it was but Ohtani's two major reasons for signing with the Dodgers all along was he loves California and wanted to play on a playoff contending team. Sure the Dodgers have made the playoffs consistently over the years but they've also choked a lot in the post season even with all that talent. Ohtani isn't going to guarantee they'll do any better over the life of his contract especially with his ability to pitch again still up in the air.

Shohei made an entry of Dodgers name on his baseball goal sheet at that time. But when Shohei announced his challenge to MLB and again they sent another love call, there was no DH rule in the N League. This time, Shohei's decision is to return his gratitude toward Dodgers unchanged love for his talent and to be able to continue his two-way play with the team that loves him so mich for so long. For Shohei, "trust" and "respect" make a big difference.

Her being a tour guide at Dodgers Stadium and thinking this was not a common occurrence. So she and people around her were speculating it was Ohtani

Why Shohei Ohtani will be worth every penny of $700 million contract for Los Angeles Dodgers
