I don't know if this is a smart move or not. As they mention, 68mil now and 10 years later are not the same value. Imagine USD gets completely crushed in coming years in world economy. That trend is coming. But then Ohtani doesn't play for money, so maybe he won't get to upset about money. He'll have enough to live without any care after retirements anyways.
Ohtani different breed...he know baseball is team game!give him STATUE already at Dodgers stadium!!! Make me like it more about Mr. Shohei Ohtani 🙇🏻♂️
What's "fishy", "doesn't pass the smell test", or "loophole" about this contract? It's in the rule there is no limits. That means any team can use this strategy as long as a player is willing. "ARTICLE XVI-Deferred Compensation There shall be no limitations on either the amount of deferred compensation or the percentage of total compensation attributable to deferred compensation for which a Uniform Player’s Contract may provide."
3 words. Taxes taxes taxes. If he went with what was expected $70.5 million gross a year, his taxes in the state of California he will net at 34.8 million a year. Yes I know. So he plays at 2mil plus endorsements then after the term he retires he takes his lumpsum back to Japan or claims residency in Florida where there is no state income taxes. He's rich he's worth a billion and has smart people like myself working for him.
It’s genius not only for Ohtani but also for the Dodgers. When they start paying him boatloads of money annually a decade from now, the competitive balance tax threshold will have surely only gone up.
😅this would not have happened if Ohtani were a black athlete, cuz all them black dudes want their money now to buy yachts, planes, super cars, luxury home, not to mention paying for their entourage. They got no patience to wait 10 years to get their mega money. They want their money now! On the other hand, Shohei will be solely playing baseball, and not go out partying, continuing to be the goat.
These analysts are something else. They always say Ohtani couldn’t win w/Trout. But they fail to bring up that Trout was injured most of that time. And same with Rendon (the 3rd highest paid player in MLB). So right there - that’s $70M/yr off the field not helping Ohtani. Ohtani carried that team.
His fan base is mostly in Japan. And you’d see his face almost every day. When it came to bluejays vs dodgers, was quite straightforward since it’s easier for people in Japan to watch his games if he played on the west coast vs if he played in the east coast
why are people getting upset about the deferrals? if the dodgers are getting charged with $46M AAV per year, doesn't that just mean ohtani is essentially only getting paid $46M per year for 10 years when you account for the time value of money? i.e. ignore the $70M, it's not relevant
I'm interested to see what this does to the Dodgers 10 years from now when they have to start actually paying that note... and they no longer have Ohtani. Regardless of whether they win a world series with him or not
If the dodgers wanted to cut ohtani a check right now in full payment they can.. they have the funds..also only reason mlb is allowing them to deferred so much money they must have proof of funds to cover the amount..also not try to sell team in the future with that debt still being owed..
That’s the estimated value of what that money will be worth in 2034-2044. It still has to be accounted for the CBA during his contract. In 2034-2044 it will not cost $1 towards the tax threshold.
@@juancuelloespinosa the MLB would probably void the contract because of Ohtani’s age at end of it. But more importantly that full $35m each year would count as full $35m every year to the CBA tax. By deferring most of it it lowers it, because it’s adjusted for inflation, so the tax hit is smaller this way. If it was a 20 year contract it would also hurt the salary cap for 20 years instead of just the 10 he will actually be filling a roster spot. So you are not hurting yourself in the future using cap space for someone not even playing.
@brandoncarter439 you're saying mlb is ok with you paying 68mm for someone not to play? They get mad when teams buckle to players for player opt outs. Ok, but now it's 46, it's more. Fine. once he becomes ineffective, release him, he'll no longer take a roster spot, and he'll still get payed
@@juancuelloespinosa Everyone will make their money on this deal, the goal of this is to reduce the cap space hit now and not jeopardize anything in the future. Ohtani’s deal will pay for itself by investing it and the tax penalty they save. It’s 100% team friendly and Ohtani will be a billionaire in 20 years. The Dodgers will probably be worth more then the Yankees within 5-10 years. It’s insane how smart this deal is.
No way Yankees commenters are hating lmao. The Yankees for the most part have gotten everything they wanted throughout the history of the sport. They’re the most decorated franchise in baseball history. My Dodgers are coming for Yamamoto and probably Hader #BleedDodgersBlue
This is not a secret. All the teams knew about this rule. The rule says there is no limits on ANY amount or percentage. Players with huge contracts have been deferring payments for years. This will not start a trend, because no other player would agree to getting paid only 3% of his salary like Shohei. If your salary is $5,000 per month, and your boss wants to pay you 3% or $150 now and the rest 10 years from now, would you take that deal? No, because you wouldn't be able to survive on that small amount. Shohei, on the other hand, can because he has huge endorsement deals. Still, it was a generous move on his part to help the team win NOW.
Of course Yankees shills don’t like this. But hey, maybe your superstars should take a Page from the superstar, Ohtani, or even Tom Brady. If a player truly wants to win, do whatever he can to surround himself with players that will help him win. Did the Yankees even make the playoffs last year With that Payroll?
The dodgers got possibly the best deal of all time in proffessional sports, I would defend them when people said they try to buy championships but this is ridiculous and unfair
Unfair to the team who didn't think of it first..now it's all public every team can to this tmmrw if they want let's see if they can find players who are willing to do what ohtani just did..
That’s what I’m saying exactly. I could see this becoming a big problem and big markets can defer big time cash and sign everyone. What kind of BS is that? This should def hit the luxury tax or make a new luxury tax deferred bracket to deter this happening. This is stupid.
It's better for baseball overall for their best player (maybe EVER) to be able to showcase his talents in the postseason. The Dodgers will give him that opportunity at least.
@@Thurmanatr16 What do you mean "not even Bonds level"? Bonds was the best hitter ever. If he was Bonds level hitting AND the pitcher he is capable of being he'd not even be a human being at that point. But Bonds was not a better overall baseball player than Shohei because Ohtani can pitch and an elite level.
Haters keep hating lol. The Dodgers are just smarter. Game recognizes game. How ironic is it that a Yankees network cries foul when the Yankees have been buying players since the beginning of time. The Dodgers are playing the Yankees playbook better than the Bombers. Be mad at that and do summin other than b*tch!n
Los Angeles spends now and worries about the bill later, go figure. That deal is an owner who does not give a single F about what happens 10 years from now
It's seems like a generous deal (and it is) but let's not ignore how this isn't just a "humble" move or "money isn't everything" or a gift to fans: Othani will make at least $50 million next year off endorsements alone. Most likely even more. The Dodgers have a direct line dealing with Japanese sports media, meaning a huge international market is being tapped. He gets some of that advertisement/marketing cut, surely. And California has absolutely insane taxes. (Cali taxes is so bad, almost half of that $700 million overall would be taken by Uncle Sam. Not even kidding.) This deferred method probably dodges some of that heavy tax issue, somehow. This move by L.A. and Ohtani most likely has some very smart financial people finding a loophole). Ohtani is a real dude, but no generational talent forgets about the mad money that's on the table to be taken. (As they shouldn't.) It's a team-friendly deal, but make no mistake: Like all elite sports talent, Ohtani is still part-businessman. He will probably end up a billionaire someday. He's got people looking out for his max earnings, for sure.
This deal is on the nose. If the player is happy with deferred payment, good for them, but no way should a team be able to defer annual salary to suit their tax hit. Trouble is brewing.
Perfect legal. If a player - and only ONE player in the world can do this - Ohtani and only one player is willing to lose interest gain from losing $68M per year - that’s Ohtani. NOBODY can ever accuse him of not wanting to win. Period. This dude is going to lose 6-8% interest off $680M. As a NYM fan, it’s the ultimate put up or shut up. Admired. Not hating.
@@TheDeepShallow Not really though. I would think 99 percent of the free agents going into free agency want most of their money sooner rather than way later. I can't see another person doing the same and only taking 2 million dollars. Some will take deferred payments but not to that extent. It's a me first situation most of the time. What Shohei did ain't happening any time soon.
The intention was for small market teams to afford being able to sign players without spending money in the moment allowing them to spread payments throughout the years but the dodger pretty much took advantage of the rule 😂
The dodgers really did nothing to take advantage of the rules in place. It’s Ohtani that sacrificed himself for the enhanced ability of the Dodgers to add more talent to an already stacked roster. See, ohtani’s 680m payout beginning in 10 years will carry the same purchasing power as say 460m today because of inflation. In finance that’s called present day value. That’s the number ohtani’s cap hit is being based on, hence the 46m cap hit and not 70m. Ohtani is literally losing 250m in real purchasing power just to add 1 or 2 more players the dodgers realistically shouldn’t be able to afford. It’s the ultimate sacrifice a player like him could make for the chance of team success. No one from the US would ever make this selfless kind of deal. Giants fan here, but as a fan of team sports how can you not love what the Ohtani is doing? Already the on field and off field GOAT!!
People hate this type of shit in basketball so I’m interested to see how fans feel about him making a super team in baseball..seems like a weak move in my opinion but to each their own
the only thing i dont like about this is the fact they can defer all this money so in 10 years when the luxery tax will be like 500-600 mil or somthing the extra from 10 years past will be nothing
After the Dodgers let Seger and both Turners leave, it was obvious this was the plan and if the Japanese pitcher signs, it will be better than originally thought. With no salary cap in baseball…anything goes.
Wrong on Seger. He want to go. They dodgers offered higher AAV just not more years. And Turner as well. He wanted to go back to the east coast. As for a salary cap. The players and agents didn't want a cap. But choose to have a luxury tax instead.
@@backspace120 Seger was injured often and the Dodgers weren’t sure, they could have resigned him if they wanted him back so I disagree. JT was still productive and wanted to stay but they had a younger Muncy and had all the leverage. As far as Trea Turner, he was great for the team but Ohtani was the long term priority so Seger and Trea had to be sacrificed to get Ohtani.
@@richardsforum6354 Nope you got it all wrong. The Dodgers offered a higher AAV to Seger just not the years. Go check on it. He also wanted to Texas because of a coach. Again as for JT he was slipping in production. And it showed. Plus it would have cost them more to keep him. As for Muncy he wasn't younger. Just making less. They were making room to go after Ohtani. Trea Turner wanted to go back east. And yes they could have offered more. But Ohtani was the prize. So they did let Trea Turner walk.

Shohei was never in for the money and he proved that many times, from his salary in LAA to him donating his money prizes to LAA staff and to his home country. He showed it again with these majority of money deferred. No other athlete would have proposed this idea, he just wants the LAD to create the best winning team.
Holy chit. This tells me that Ohtani is all in to land Yamo and maybe even another free agent pitcher. Jeeeeeeez. I think it' sketchy as hell, but if he's down....he's doing the Dodgers and himself a huge service. This has to make Dodgers fans even more rabid for the guy.
If you're truly a player rep, you should be happy the player is getting paid and is doing it the way he wanted that will help him win.
Nobody had a problem a decade ago when the Yankees and Red Sox were getting all the big free agents and these 3 east coasters seem personally butt hurt😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
At least you got the Covid clown show chip right?
@@maxdubs222 DAMN STRAIGHT 🏆😂😂😂
@@seanbates282I mean I hate this type of shit in any sport tbh..instead of building your own team and being the best, you join an already established top 3 team for the last 10 years, not sure what happened to players competitiveness but they all want the easy championships now it seems. If I was an Angels fan I would hate his guts (and yes I’m aware that teams ownership/management has been awful)
It's totally up to him if the wants to defer his salary. Any other player can do the same
Read the Sho-Time book by Jeff Fletcher and this will all make sense.
Ohtani different breed...he know baseball is team game!give him STATUE already at Dodgers stadium!!!
Make me like it more about Mr. Shohei Ohtani 🙇🏻♂️
YesNetwork 😩😩😩??? Yamamoto & Sasaki are Dodgers!!!😂😂😂😂
Ohtani is smart ok he deferred this year's salary to help the team out nice.
What's "fishy", "doesn't pass the smell test", or "loophole" about this contract? It's in the rule there is no limits. That means any team can use this strategy as long as a player is willing.
"ARTICLE XVI-Deferred Compensation
There shall be no limitations on either the amount of deferred compensation or the percentage of total compensation attributable to deferred compensation for which a Uniform Player’s Contract may provide."
Finally, SOMEONE around here gets it.
What is it like working for him
@Highlandcorp language barrier but at least we both talk money
It’s genius not only for Ohtani but also for the Dodgers. When they start paying him boatloads of money annually a decade from now, the competitive balance tax threshold will have surely only gone up.
Smart move but there is a risk if he dies during the contract the family will get nothing on this deferral
Yankees network talking about “payroll fairness” 😂😂😂
2017年に彼が最低年俸で契約した事を忘れたのですか?
His fan base is mostly in Japan. And you’d see his face almost every day. When it came to bluejays vs dodgers, was quite straightforward since it’s easier for people in Japan to watch his games if he played on the west coast vs if he played in the east coast
Base on inflation, he’s playing for free
He would have signed with the Dodgers when he first came over if the National League had the dh then.
Ohtani is that dude selflessness
Funny just yesterday how many people crying that Shohei deal is all about money ...
The player who is "really" desperate for a champion than the money !!
Doesn’t seem fair yall have Judge,Soto,Stanton,Verdugo 😭
Omg the Yankees complaining about Fair what a Joke😂
why are people getting upset about the deferrals? if the dodgers are getting charged with $46M AAV per year, doesn't that just mean ohtani is essentially only getting paid $46M per year for 10 years when you account for the time value of money? i.e. ignore the $70M, it's not relevant
I'm interested to see what this does to the Dodgers 10 years from now when they have to start actually paying that note... and they no longer have Ohtani. Regardless of whether they win a world series with him or not
My thought exactly
Im guessing they’ll put that 68 million to the side each year after he brings in 100 million a year.
The dodgers aren’t worried about the bill! The revenue they already generated before ohtani is insane. Now with ohtani it will be unbelievable!
If the dodgers wanted to cut ohtani a check right now in full payment they can.. they have the funds..also only reason mlb is allowing them to deferred so much money they must have proof of funds to cover the amount..also not try to sell team in the future with that debt still being owed..
doesn't make a damn difference

Seems it is more likely Yamamoto ends up with the Dodgers sadly! Wow.
He has great love for baseball 🎉
Fair. Life is not fair.
Does anyone know whether that deferred money counts towards the luxury tax in the year that the Dodgers pay it?
They said 46 million of it counts towards it
It’s being discounted at NPV. Expect many other teams to start doing this with big contracts to circumvent the luxury tax
@@Thurmanatr16 What's NPV?
I don't understand how the salary cap hit was only cut by 33% of he's deferring nearly everything
That’s the estimated value of what that money will be worth in 2034-2044. It still has to be accounted for the CBA during his contract. In 2034-2044 it will not cost $1 towards the tax threshold.
@@brandoncarter439 i see. then why not say the contract is 700MM over 20 years? that'd be 35/yr, no?
I wonder if other potential teams knew Ohtani would defer so much. Seems like way more teams would be interested if they knew.
Still, it was a generous move on his part to help the team win NOW.
you guys hit all the highlights. great broadcast!!!
STOP USING INFLATION AS THE BENCHMARK. IT'S NOT HOW THINGS ARE EVALUATED.
It's the risk-free rate of return with is typically UST (US treasury bonds).
Let the haters Hate!!!!
GO DODGERS!!!!
This is a total Tom Brady move. These guys dont get it! He didnt want Toronto, or YOU! YES, YES, YES, GO DODGERS!
In 2022 the Dodgers made 581 million in revenue and that number keeps climbing every year so I think they’ll be fine.
What was net profit?
@@Thurmanatr16 Operating Income was 14 million but I’m not sure if that’s the net profit.
Question, I understand the money is deferred but its still counts towards the luxury tax yes?
Yamamoto is a dodger😂
Yankees commentators complaining about Shohei money or money in general is hilarious. 😂
This spits in the face of the “competitive balance” the league always talks about more than anything the Yankees have ever done
I think the move to defer is brilliant, but I have to wonder, couldn’t he have just signed a lesser deal
what happens if something happens and dodgers declare bankruptcy?
“The Dodgers are getting away with it”………..everything is according to the CBA so gtfoh
The Dynasty has begun
If you are Buffett, every four years, one dollar becomes 2 dollars
“That doesn’t seem very fair” oh STFU
He deserves it he playing two men player
Is there a chance the MLB will reject this. This is nuts. The dodgers could basically win the entire league for the next 10 years.
Well, I don’t think there is a limit on how much the team can defer payment.
Both party agreed and name me one player who's willing to do that? LOL
This is not the Dodgers breaking the system. Ohtani just broke the system. Who else in the world would agree this hmm? LOL
That’s what I’m saying exactly. I could see this becoming a big problem and big markets can defer big time cash and sign everyone. What kind of BS is that? This should def hit the luxury tax or make a new luxury tax deferred bracket to deter this happening. This is stupid.
This was offered by Ohtani. I think Yamamoto will want to sign with LA.
Looks like the Dodgers figured out a clever way to circumvent the salary cap/luxury tax.
It's better for baseball overall for their best player (maybe EVER) to be able to showcase his talents in the postseason. The Dodgers will give him that opportunity at least.
He’s not even Bonds level hitting yet so nowhere near closest to best ever.
Fair lol from a Yankee fan.
These guys
"We don't get to watch hi in the east coast" oh boohoo
Los Angeles spends now and worries about the bill later, go figure. That deal is an owner who does not give a single F about what happens 10 years from now
Lol they're scared the dodgers are going to steal Yamamoto from them. 😛
It's seems like a generous deal (and it is) but let's not ignore how this isn't just a "humble" move or "money isn't everything" or a gift to fans:
Othani will make at least $50 million next year off endorsements alone.
Not even kidding.)
This deferred method probably dodges some of that heavy tax issue, somehow. This move by L.A. and Ohtani most likely has some very smart financial people finding a loophole).
Ohtani is a real dude, but no generational talent forgets about the mad money that's on the table to be taken. (As they shouldn't.)
It's a team-friendly deal, but make no mistake: Like all elite sports talent, Ohtani is still part-businessman. He will probably end up a billionaire someday. He's got people looking out for his max earnings, for sure.
Japan's highest tax bracket is 45%. Globally, these max tax brackets aren't really considered high in developed countries.
@@jonathanrosa6508 700million is still 700million
People hate this type of shit in basketball so I’m interested to see how fans feel about him making a super team in baseball..seems like a weak move in my opinion but to each their own
So he is basically signing a $550m contract adjusted for 2034 value
Greedy American players wouldn't defer 95% or more of their contracts lol. It takes two to tango.
the only thing i dont like about this is the fact they can defer all this money so in 10 years when the luxery tax will be like 500-600 mil or somthing the extra from 10 years past will be nothing

If it's legal, I can see Shohei investing the $68 million per year back into the Dodgers for equity in the organization.
My concern about Ohtani is that he has had 2 TJ surgeries. Can LAD get 3 great years out of Ohtani will be the question?
You said what I said, Ohtani was the projected target in the end. Same difference…
Rob Manfred is a pitiful excuse for a baseball commissioner. To allow the Dodgers to circumvent the luxury tax is downright cheating.
He allows the Astros to keep their World Series banner so 😂.
