“Spark of divinity” makes me think of what the Speaker said about the Light existing in all things. I wonder if the ancient Psions were aware of, or even made use of, the natural Light around them like the splicers.
And maybe they chose the spark of life, instead of all becoming one under a “Final Shape”? Almost feels like their past it’s being kept in the dark for a big reveal related to the Light and Darkness?
I love how Byf portrays his emotions in his speech. You can feel the happiness, sadness or concern when talking about the lore. It makes the video that much more interesting
I don't know what you've been watching/listening to but any verbal storytellers SHOULD be great at speaking.. it's not exactly that uncommon. It's like being surprised that your taxi driver knows how to drive.
Another moment to note about amtec: In the lore for season of the chosen when the rogue psions are testing the light suppressing technology, they refer to themselves as “amtec’s vengeance” so amtec hasn’t been forgotten by any means
The final Chorus sounds like something the Witness brings. He is often referred to as hundreds of thousands of voices. A chorus is a group. There are parallels there that could play into those old beliefs 🤷🏼♂️
My theory is a being that, while seemingly appearing singular, is composed of thousands of voices. The smoke of skulls above its head may represent the countless victims that have died to the Pyramids; the countless civilizations that the Traveler visited and abandoned. The Witness could very well be a hive mind of all the victims that died to darkness, representing the physical form of the innocent lives that out their faith in the Traveler, only to be betrayed, abandoned, and left to die. The Witness could very well be the physical manifestation of eons of hatred and resentment. It would explain why the Witness refers to itself as “we”, or “us”.
I feel I remember Caiatl saying that Calus did promise the psions their freedom, but she despised how he took halfsteps doing so so that he could keep them in his service as long as possible
And with what happened with the scion ambassador the other scions in Caiatl's army are probably starting to doubt her decision to continue having an alliance with the vanguard
I think one thing you haven't really talked about is how collectivistict the psions are. They can and are sharing the emotions of each other much stronger and more directly than any other species. Also their "spark of divinity" claim is based around their practise of not just leaving memoirs but psychic imprints in artifacts for future generations so in a way they become imortal preserved to guide future generations, look up their Y-goblet for more information. But yeah psion history is wild, they have had both collectivistic religious societies and authoritarian societies ruled by mega flayer godkings that maintained their power by stealing psychic energy from other psions.
Dang the psions have to be the most interesting politically and culuturally of all the races. This collectivistic detail even shows in how they speak and their mannerisms. They always refer to themselves as we, never really an I or myself. They also feel a great deal of pain when one psion brother or sister experiences loss, so does the rest of the group.
The idea of psychic imprints and memory artifacts really resonates with the events of the campaign, darkness seems to have a major hand in powers relating to memory, cognition and psychic imprints. I wonder if the psion's powers are in any way related, or are another sort of brand of moreso supernatural, rather than paracausial powers.
This is one of the reasons why I was so horrified when I saw what Crow had done. By choosing mercy and taking Lord Saladin with her Caitl was able to keep peace and continue the possibility of a future of unity with us. An alliance she desperately needs to survive the coming storm. But I know some Psions are just going to see a dead Flayer, someone who was supposed to be a personal friend of Caitl. They will see that no blood was spilled in retribution and instead one of the people who was responsible elevated to a place of honor. While I do agree with Caitl's actions, Crow accidently put her in a REALLY bad spot with what he did.
Keep in mind though that most imperial psions if not all wouldn't follow the idea of blood for blood that the cabal do. They may know or sense the fact that it was a mistake and trust Caiatl's decision
I cannot articulate how much your lore videos make my day! Not to mention that according to Calus “The Guardian” the player character is a Shadow at least according to Calus. At least according the the Destiny Wiki.
I had an unexpected takeaway from this video. I can finally understand the horrified reactions of using alien powers not meant for the hands wielding them, like the outrage many characters expressed at guardians using the darkness during beyond light. Eramis and Mithrax Xivu Arath and Savathun Calus and Caiatl We all know where they and their followers drew battle lines and, in some cases, why they drew those lines. But, ironically, the only species capable of telepathy is the one we have no idea what they're thinking. This might be because they had lacked a public figurehead. Well, for the eliksni whoever gets the most ether gets bigger, for the hive the stronger they are the bigger they are, and I guess the cabal and psions just have crazy protein

Byf, Because of the state of things, I stop playing destiny about 2 years ago, I knew I would return one day, I knew the game would inevitably reach a High Point again. Alas I have returned, obviously when I stopped playing I had consumed most of your content and no longer had a reason to consume any more. In my return I forgot about you and how amazing and unique your content is. This video popped up and I got so excited, especially since there are so many awesome things happening and I imagine you have your work cut out for you. I am so excited to listen to it all.
Hey byf can you make a video on your builds that you use, I want to try new builds and the one you are using in the background of your last few videos looks really interesting, would love to know what you run! As always, keep up the good work.
The fact that the Darkness seems to have some sort of influence over memory & thought makes me think the Psions are especially vulnerable to its influence.
Byf, I love you man. Your the reason I became obsessed with destinies lore, the reason I drive my friends insane with constant lore conversations, the reason I don’t get anything done ;p; (I’m not hating I’m just saying I’m obsessed with lore). I love your videos so goddamn much, my hobby is destiny lore now. A small side note: could you maybe start posting your load outs for each video in the description? If the Conclave does believe in the chorus afterlife it would align with the will of the darkness. Fighting for the darkness would allow the Psions to die as martyrs furthering the final shape, getting revenge and being rewarded after death.
Yurik’s message from the past… all divine and become one? What if it wasn’t JUST in context to the Psions? What if it was for ALL life? Then… it sounds a little like the Witness’s version of the Final Shape. The ancient Psion’s may have ditched it because it lead to Darkness, and they decided to be more collective and inclusive. Just a thought.
"Oh, you can read my mind? Well then you know that you won't be able to outrun the hundreds of nukes I'm about to drop on your planet lmao" ~some ancient cabal emperor, probably
psions almost seem modelled on the greeks, as the cabal are modelled on the roman empire. kinda fits the story imo. subjugated race, vying for freedom in a collapsing empire. especially considering the word psion is based on the greek word ψυχή, meaning mind or soul. obviously this was coined by sci fi writers before destiny. perhaps we could find a similar story progression to the greeks
Wait, this is what the end of the insight terminus is all about? Been playing D2 since launch and I've never known what that was all about until this video XD
You know, every time the OXA machine is mentioned, I can’t help but wonder if it isn’t somehow connected to another famous prediction engine: the “device” used by the Future War Cult. The similarities are so great that is hard to write off as mere coincidence…
In the same lines spoken at the end of the Insight Terminus strike, sometimes "Otzot" is replaced with "MSund12" referring to the 12th simulated copy of Maya Sundaresh, founder of FWC. Wondering if "The Device" FWC used is related to the OXA or maybe they're the same?
I have a feeling that Bungie is setting up the psions to be one of humanity's greatest threats (even though Yirix will probably get turned into an exotic handcannon as well)
One thing is for sure, Caiatl's Cabal would be screwed if the Psions went their own way because aren't most of their vessels and equipment built to have Psion pilots and maintenance crews? I seem to recall something about that maybe with the Glykon lore?
What’s interesting to me is how the Cabal conquered the Psions in the first place. The Psions maybe vastly physically inferior to the Cabal, but their psionic and psychic powers can be nearly as deadly as Lightbearers. This would certainly be an equalizer between the Cabal and Psion. I have to wonder if the Psion leaders and general populace allowed themselves to enslaved or indentured to the Cabal. Perhaps thinking they could use their powers to usurp this mighty empire or to protect themselves from something else. Maybe the OXA Machine revealed (perhaps faultly) to the them that bowing to the Cabal would ensure their future power.

You know my favorite part in some of your videos where you rely on gameplay NPC chatter during a firefight? "Guardian down!!!" 🤣 (Seen during other videos)
I would say we know that the empress has a very good relationship with several pisons, which makes it easier to trust what she says. But I think we should still take it with a grain of salt.
I really want Byf to start his intro with 'Hi my name Byf' but say it like 'My name Jeff' from 21Jump Street and pronounce Byf as Biff. I reckon that'd be great haha.
I'm really curious how this whole Calus story shakes out. It's been a long building thing over multiple years and expansions, would be a real shame if we don't have a really sweet payoff. While Xivu Arath is likely to be the big baddy of Lightfall, I think we're due for one last trip to the Leviathan to deal with Calus once and for all.
I'm now left wondering if Bungie was playing the long game when the introduced the Enclave and the psion defectors in Season of Dawn and this was always where the story was going to go or if it was a clever retcon like how they retconned Oryx as never creating the Taken, only borrowing them.
I feel like no, I think it's one of those things that someone had a plan for but with writer turn over and changing plans they have cleverly picked up those threads after they were left dangling for a long time
I don’t think it’s a retcon that Oryx created the Taken. The Taken as we know them and in the Books of Sorrow we’re of his making, it was the power to do so that was taken/borrowed from The Witness. Unless I am missing something, is pretty consistent with the Books of Sorrow. What has been elaborated on since then and especially in Witch Queen is that Oryx’s power to Take was just taste of what it could do. Which also illustrated that one of the most powerful enemies we ever faced in Destiny was, in-fact, not even close to the Pinnacle of power. The Taken King and his kind were never the Witnesses right or left hand. They were just powerful but ultimately expendable tools for those hands. Which makes the Book of Sorrow entries even sadder, because Oryx was likely never going to be part of the Final Shape. Oryx never tapped into the true power of Taking, which was to take entire worlds or massive portions of space time out of reality…and to somewhere else.
I think it's also completely in the realm of possibility that Calus highly redacted their history and manipulated a lot of the details where he would still be a good guy by enslaving them. History is almost always written by the victors. Calus might have revised their entire history and manipulated the heck out of it. It's not like Calus hasn't shown us that he does that, oh wait. We have a whole lore book of his fantasy about us killing our allies. #teamcaiatl
Four years of playing D2 and I’ve finally learn what OXA and Otzot are. Now the o my question left is, who is MSund 12? They didn’t change that dialogue for nothing
Were the Sindu and the Clipse really part of the Cabal Empire? I thought that Calus conquered them on his own with his cloned soldiers while he was in the Leviathan, cut off from the Empire?
“What is oxa, and who is otzot” lol I always think about that when I play the strike, now we know I guess lol. I don’t read the lore much, Not sure when this became known.
I'm expecting to see more Flares that are radiating stasis power. It's difficult to understand a scion, but they are definitely drawn to power. To what ultimate end, no idea. BUT they NEED power. They NEED to evolve to the Flare state. If the Witness is offering that, they WILL take it. I don't think the scions had a particular loyalty to the dark or the light... and neither do Guardians for that matter. Off topic, but The Traveler wanted to be in Savathun's thrown world. That was the purpose of resurrecting Savathun. Yes, the Traveler fought off the Pyramids during the collapse. I believe it only fought then because it didn't have a choice. The game doesn't specifically say this happened, but hint at the idea that the Traveler tried to flee during the collapse so Rasputin attacked and crippled the Traveler forcing it to stay and fight. The Traveler has always ran when the Pyramids would fly in. It tried to run and hide in Savathun's thrown world. Instead of allowing the Traveler to... well... Travel, we guardians kill the Traveler's new protector and essentially make it stay over the First city. An action that goes directly against the will of the Traveler. It wanted to go with Savathun and the Vanguard said "No". We may be preparing to fight the Witness and it's minions, but I can't honestly say the Guardians are on the Traveler's side anymore.
Honestly a telepathic propaganda officer is a terrifying thought. Like Byf mentioned, Propaganda is far more about feelings than facts, and a telepathic one, especially one that believes her own propaganda, can literally just beam the correct feelings into your head. there is no misunderstanding the message, and it's even hard to analyze it from an objective/adversarial viewpoint, since it's literally the feelings trying to persuade you rather than an image or line of dialogue trying to inspire feelings to persuade you. consider how the Empress herself sounds when she's experiencing the messages; she's an experienced, battle hardened warrior and politician and it still takes her a minute to divorce her thoughts from the feelings imparted to actually analyze/refute them, rather than just bask in the emotions.

So early, there are no ads!
Qued up for a strike and clicked on a new Byf video.
Get insighjt terminus and loredaddy providing me lore on the strike while I complete it.

A psion ascended into the deep would be so frikin awesome
"that's the unique thing about a spymaster, you can never really know how much impact they have on a situation"
Well, that's not entirely true. You can and will know if they're failing to do their job properly. Because you'll know they were doing something at all.
I'm excited to see the return of Rasputin, and hopefully the Season he returns will also see the return of SIVA, or at least foreshadow it
You know my favorite part in some of your videos where you rely on gameplay NPC chatter during a firefight?
So that turned out to be Calus instead.

The spark of divinity may be a part of the Y-Goblet religion that was suppressed by Flayer-tyrants long ago in Psion history.
#teamcaiatl
I don’t remember the D1 Cabal lore well, little of it as there was, but could some of this also begun with our slaying of the Freehold Psions?
You lost me as the tank bounced away
Four years of playing D2 and I’ve finally learn what OXA and Otzot are. Now the o my question left is, who is MSund 12? They didn’t change that dialogue for nothing
A twist on history
A twystery
psion: How dare you kill my sisters who were trying kill you even though you were only defending yourself.
We're going to see Yirix in the raid aren't we...
Were the Sindu and the Clipse really part of the Cabal Empire? I thought that Calus conquered them on his own with his cloned soldiers while he was in the Leviathan, cut off from the Empire?
the amazing lore aside... I didn't realize you could kill the champ at the start before the timer starts...
So Byf mentioned an exotic video for more lore anyone know which one it was? I would like to have a good listen. Thanks
“What is oxa, and who is otzot” lol I always think about that when I play the strike, now we know I guess lol. I don’t read the lore much, Not sure when this became known.
Rlhuk got to Bfy, he started saying “Upended” unprovoked
Byf, you’re great. Your vid’s are great.
I’m completely over your osmosis faitbringer. Please switch it up.
Ikora rey… GI Jane 2 can’t wait to see it!!!
finally, we know the answer to “what is ‘Oxa’, and who was ‘Otzot’?”
Really hoping to see big daddy Calus all juiced up with the darkness as a seasonal boss this year.
👀 Sorry I got so lost into the gameplay I didn't really hear much of what Byf was saying. 😅
I was guessing that Amtec was actually the Psion who destroyed the Almighty’s navigation systems before being taken out by Zavala
I remember back in D1 I thought the psions were female cabal
Yes they do know, they want a ultimate collective, so does the witness.
So the conclave wants an esoteric Psion Hyperborea essentially
anyone else remember when scion flayers tried to majoras mask mars?
Came back here because of the act 3 exotic mission
Watch yirix gonna be another quira moment; decent build up to just die in a lackluster season finale mission
Until you killed them.
It wasnt just me, there was 5 other people there too!
We may be preparing to fight the Witness and it's minions, but I can't honestly say the Guardians are on the Traveler's side anymore.
why do none of your videos have subtitles? it helps me to be able to read while i watch :(
Psions remind me of the grunts and covenant
The first time anyone made use of osmosis in a build
Does anyone know what grenade Byf is using. I haven't seen something that disruptive since using Funnelweb with volatile rounds

Do we know that Cabal War Beasts were native to Torabatel or if they were taken from a planet they conquered?
