Hey Adam, I recently heard of an online company called “ReptiLinks” that sells frog (and lizard) “scented juices.” They claim saturating a food offering supposedly stimulates a snake reluctant to feed in captivity. Since a certain percentage of the Western Hognose diet consists of amphibians (esp. in the spring/summer when they move from the dry prairies to the wetlands) you may find coating a rodent in “frog juice” will stimulate her feeding response. As you know Eastern Hognoses are specialty feeders who eat exclusively toads (& occasionally frogs.) If they weren’t so endangered in the lower NY region/ Eastern Long Island I’d be tempted to try using that “frog juice” to get a captive eastern to accept other more readily available food items. I hear the “Lizard Juice” works well on snakes like Crebos whose diet consists largely of lizards in the wild. Good luck! 👍🏻
I drive northwestern Wisconsin back roads to meet snakes, and Eastern Hoggies have become my favorite. So far I've seen them in brown grey bars, brown grey circle type patterns, solid black, and my favorite, solid blue/gray with black cobra hood spots. All of them make a big show, and not one has bitten me yet. Just love'm!
My hoggies saved my life. I had debilitating depression for 2 years. Couldn't get out of bed to barely take a shower. It's now been a year & because of my hognoses, I'm now able to shower without being in massive pain bc I've been able to recover from my muscle atrophy. I owe my life to these guys. And I'll never forget it
The first two and a half months of owning our hognose sucked because they refused to eat. We tried different feeding strategies until something worked, and they started eating. Now that we're not worried anymore, Rusty is an absolute delight.

@@gamemaster6219 It ate finally when I hid the prey item in a black hide where it could be completely hidden while it ate. We also scented the pinkie (frozen thawed) with frog juice from our local reptile shop.
@game master One of mine also wouldn't eat for months when we first got her. We tried scenting with frogs but it didn't work for us. We did finally find success by putting a few drops of canned salmon juice onto the pinkies and then putting them directly in front of her. So if the frogs don't work for you, try salmon juice.
I keep a hognose and I can say it's one of the best choices as a first snake. Very easy to keep, doesn't take up much space and is still quite unique both in personality and appearance. (Mine is a gentleman that can spend an entire afternoon sleeping on my lap) It's the kind of snake that either gives you just enough of the experience of having a snake for a pet, or makes you hungry for other snakes that are bigger and better at holding on to you.

My hognose wasn't told about the not holding on/climbing thing. We had to add more branches to his enclosure because he would usually rather be curled up in branches than down in the substrate or making burrows, he also holds on like crazy. Not as strongly as a similarly sized juvenile Ball Python or anything but strong enough that I don't really need to worry so much.

I'm really glad you brought up how aggressive of eaters they can be! Hognose have the reputation of being horrible eaters but when they get going they love to eat! Sure it's normal for them to skip but they also love to eat!
Red is absolutely gorgeous! Still above my pay level around here but I hope someday to get one. When I upgrade my ball python (he spent 3 years in a nicely put together but small bin and got terrified by all the extra space even with all the clutter-he’s finally relaxing and exploring a little) I’ll have the perfect enclosure for a female hognose.
The live stream was awesome and I’ve been waiting for this video since because I’ve been wanting one and you just confirmed (again) that they don’t suck which is good because they’re cheap, they’re adorable❤, and they are easy to care for
My little dude was hard to feed but started taking meals after tuna scenting. He ate a few meals and went into his first shed with me. I love my hognose (first snake ever, too) more than anything. He’s such a joy in my life.
I have an extra 20gal long I was debating setting up for a hognose or rosy boa. I was going to fill it with substrate and put in some hamster tubes and let them burrow. The poop is interesting. I don't know when my ball pythons poop generally, I just know when they switch hides they probably did, or if they leave it somewhere I can see it. I always know when my savannah monitor has pooped. Whoo boy.
I only want three different types of snakes as of now. Hognose is definitely one of them. Not for the venomous factor but my God, that adorable nose though! Such adorable little dorks.🥰
For a first snake my hubby and I had intended on a corn snake, BUT, we had limited space- only a 40 gallon tank could fit. Too small for a mature corn snake and no guarantee we could move to a bigger place in a year or two. But that amount of space is perfect for a hognose! And god they are so CUTE with those little shovel faces. (But the PRICE! Oof! Even the normals were more expensive than the fancy morphs of corn snakes.)
I love my George. He’s a pain when he’s on a food strike though. I’ve had him going on 3 years now and I still spaz when he’s on a food strike. Also knocking on wood, but he has yet to bite me. But his vocals and bluff strikes scare the crap out of visitors. He’ll come up to the glass to check out whoever is looking at him and things will be going good til he starts in with the attitude. 😂 I don’t see how anyone can be scared of him. He’s just dramatic.
I adore my hognose. She's been the most awesome little snake. She is a great eater and I love her personality, she's never hissy and she's just so chill. I look forward to seeing her cute little shovel face every morning. Definitely one of my favorite snakes I've ever had
Hey I had to assist feed my boy before! Got him and hadn't eaten in 4 months! He lost a few grams and since he's a baby I decided to assist feed. After a couple feedings he went back to normal, eating like a champ.
I have two cal kings and it’s kind of neat but they are polar opposite of each other in handling behavior. The younger of the two will “hold on to me” quite well and the other is derpy or I call her lazier lol but she does not really “hold on” and I have to be a little more careful with her. She would definitely fall off me if I weren’t careful. I like that they have their own uniqueness about them :-)
Unfortunately, hognose snakes aren't legal to keep here in Missouri without a license. The state has a law against keeping any animals that are local to the area, so no hognose snakes, no garters, no copperheads or cottonmouths (which is probably for the best here), but I can keep ball pythons or other restrictors. So I have two male normal types, one that I got as my first snake and one that I took in as a rehome that was neglected and abused, he's doing much better though, and here soon I'm going to get a blue eyed Lucy ball python. I'm excited.
I love these because they are huffy drama queens. The striking with closed mouth is just a grumpy response, they aren’t trying to hurt anything when they do it.
@@WickensWickedReptiles I get that energy. Sometimes I am grumpy and don’t wanna deal with people either. Think the playing dead thing is poss my fav thing. Cause it is proper playing dead. Brilliant defence mechanism
Getting serious species envy from Down Under (although for the record, totally support the biosecurity rules here because our flora and fauna is so unique and vulnerable.)
I used to own an Eastern Hognose. Really docile snake except outdoors. In the warmer months, I would frequently bring my shakes outside for enrichment. The hognose would always be very defensive outside, hooding up and mock striking. Not once in the three years I owned the snake did it play dead. It was a full grown adult male when purchased and it did succumb to a URI one year when we lost power during a winter storm and I couldn’t keep the enclosure warm enough. By the time I was able to get out and get meds, he was too far gone. I was a teenager at the time and probably not the most well versed on snake maladies. In the years following, made sure that tetracycline was always on hand.
Im gonna get a hoggie in few weeks🥰 i wanted a small snake so i placed an order for a male albino conda hognose🥰 i already have a mbk and a crested gecko 🥰
I guess I've been a little confused (lucky?) since Charlotte my hognose is the least smelly reptile I have! She's musked once and it didn't smell great but I swear Alice my BTS is so much smellier when she goes... Anyway I still love hognoses, Charlotte is my first reptile and I'd absolutely recommend them as a first snake, with research of course!
Ive been thinking of getting a snake for the first time and a hognose was at the top of my list. But by this title im like am i wrong? But we will see after i watch.
The first time I was bit by a western hognose I had some swelling and a little blood but no big deal. The second time it was a lot worse my whole had swole up and hurt for over a week. I would like to add that the second bite was a 100% my fault.
Wanting a CB plains hognose is half the reason I'm probably moving out of this state when I'm done with college the other half is it regularly gets below 20F/-6C in the winter I will keep in mind that poop warning though, lol
Keeping my hognose eating has been a challenge. She will eat for three or four months then refuse food for weeks at a time only to eat again without struggle.
I have a hog nose that absolutely refused to eat regularly. Then I research a discovered their natural food is frogs. There is a company that sells frog sausages. Once offered frog meat she started eating really well. It is slightly more expensive but for one snake it is manageable. She now eats half frog / half rabbit larger sausages. Probably could start rubbing frog meet on a mouse and get her to eat it. But I don’t mind feeding her what she likes. She is so sweet and active. She is definitely the best.
Surprised to hear you still call them Western Hognose! Super cute, but the biggest con for me, and it’s really big, is the hissing and bluff striking. Absolutely terrifying to anyone with anxiety. Would have like to have seen you talk about that more instead it being kind of an afterthought. I see lots of newer keepers really freaked about it too so I know it’s not just me! 😅
I have four hognose snakes. Two males and two females. I have one little male that is an absolute drama king. He will strike and hiss and flatten out and just throw a hissy fit. But he's never tried to bite me. And even though I know that I still jump, if I'm reaching for him, and he does one of those little hisses or strikes. It's just instinctual for humans to do that. I've had hognose snakes for about five years now and I have been bitten one time. And it wasn't from the one that is all dramatic.
If I was in the market for a snake, the stinky poop is what would keep me from getting a hognose. But their small size and derpiness are plusses in my humble opinion.
I think you can try frog juice from repti-links to help a cober that won't eat by scenting the food with it. I think they naturally go after frogs and maybe you can wean them off of it once they start eating regularly? Or maybe I'm thinking of another species. Hope this may be helpful to someone.
I absolutely love hognose snakes but I know they would not be a good fit for me as a pet as it would be my first pet snake and they seem to be more intermediate because of their pickiness. Annnnd I found out recently that because they are venemous (even if rear-fanged) they are banned by the by-laws in my city DX
I Will for SURE get one! But I never knew they are venonous?? Ive watched countless videos about care and what not, never mention of venom😵 I dont mind tho
OMG, I giggled when you commented about their poop. I have one female that’s a voracious eater. A few days after she eats, her enclosure smells like the indoor pachyderm facility at my local (Oklahoma City) zoo. 🤢
Top reason: When they pass away you could never imagine how heartbroken you'll be over an animal that was "only" supposed to be for looks. It's been a year and I still get choked up over my girl.
I have been trying to find a Western Hognose in Michigan, specifically Northern Mi, for years. The only place I see them is shipped from Cali, or TX, etc. I've been looking for wild type or axanthic, nothing fancy... they are impossible to find. Ironically, I have wild Eastern Hognose that I find around my house all the time.
Why are they getting more expensive 😭 I was hoping the prices would go down eventually for some specific morphs I've had my eye on but now I feel like I need to act fast lol
When I got my first reptile it was between a corn snake and a hog nose. I decided on a corn and have been very happy. My Peach is low key and curious. I love her. She has been perfect. I will say hog nose snakes look cool though. If I got a second snake it would be a hog nose.
Love hognoses! BUT aren't they a little finicky on diet? Like little harder to get ahold of their preferred food items and alot of times need scenting to get them to eat? Still think they are awesome but for this video that is one thing I think they kinda suck at 🤷♀️
I don't know I thought you were trying to talk us away from getting popular as this video makes me just wanna get bored anyways great video can't wait for the man to ask car videos
I wish I could afford a hognose. I think they're absolutely adorable!!! They're so expensive though, even normal wild type. I'll just continue to live vicariously through you!!!
Of my three hognose snakes I had one that a friend had to help me with. He had to force feed the snake because she just would not eat. It is very stressful, at least it was for me, when a snake does not eat. She is a good eater now. Almost never skips a meal. But she is stunted as far as growth goes. But that's OK because I'm not interested in breeding snakes anyway, but it is something that can happen. You just have to be ready for it, but most of the time it works out fine.

I'm really glad you brought up how aggressive of eaters they can be! Hognose have the reputation of being horrible eaters but when they get going they love to eat! Sure it's normal for them to skip but they also love to eat!
Adam, i would have to say bull snake poop is some of the worst i have ever smelled. i don't even notice the hogs.
The live stream was awesome and I’ve been waiting for this video since because I’ve been wanting one and you just confirmed (again) that they don’t suck which is good because they’re cheap, they’re adorable❤, and they are easy to care for
thanks so much for watching on Friday!
It was fun i was the person who dared you to pronounce my last name and i asked you what your fav species was
My little dude was hard to feed but started taking meals after tuna scenting.
Whoo boy.
very cool idea!
I only want three different types of snakes as of now. Hognose is definitely one of them. Not for the venomous factor but my God, that adorable nose though! Such adorable little dorks.🥰
Good choice
This intro should a really channeling The Most eXtreme Era Animal Planet vibes
I really love their hissing, In fact my little guy was called hiss. Reminds me of a angry kitten.
very cool!
You said they're derpy like that's a bad thing -- that is almost entirely their charm.
I agree
Yadi Yadi yada...but they are just so DAMN cute. Another great video my friend.
hahah thanks
Because they normally eat frogs. Mice scented with frog helps them to eat
sometimes for sure
I adore my hognose. She's been the most awesome little snake. She is a great eater and I love her personality, she's never hissy and she's just so chill. I look forward to seeing her cute little shovel face every morning. Definitely one of my favorite snakes I've ever had
Hey I had to assist feed my boy before! Got him and hadn't eaten in 4 months! He lost a few grams and since he's a baby I decided to assist feed. After a couple feedings he went back to normal, eating like a champ.
They normally would eat frogs in the wild. Just frog scent pinkies when they are young if they are being stubborn with eating
Just bought 1, love him. He's more charismatic than I expected
I love to hear this!
I like that they have their own uniqueness about them :-)
I don't trust my ball pythons when holding them to not fall, we usually "hold hands" (I hold their tail and they curl around a finger).
I’ve had the same hognose for 10 years! They were half the price or better back then too.
they jumped up in price for sure
I love these because they are huffy drama queens. The striking with closed mouth is just a grumpy response, they aren’t trying to hurt anything when they do it.
Drama queens for sure
@@WickensWickedReptiles I get that energy. Sometimes I am grumpy and don’t wanna deal with people either. Think the playing dead thing is poss my fav thing. Cause it is proper playing dead. Brilliant defence mechanism
I love your videos wicked wickens reptile have a super day have a great day have a nice day wicked wickens reptile
I love these little guys. My hognose, Cletus, is a sassy lad. Absolutely precious.
Fantastic content as always!
thank you so much!
I have four western hogs and I love them! Currently trying to breed 2 out of the four :)
Getting serious species envy from Down Under (although for the record, totally support the biosecurity rules here because our flora and fauna is so unique and vulnerable.)
ok but aren't bob tails like $7 down there!? haha
I have a hognose, she eats fine doesn't usually bluff strike and is just really pretty
Just purchased our first hog nose yesterday.. we have a ton of corns already :) we love them
Hi Adam you should make a video about emerald green tree skinks
I so should!
I love Hognoses, but when I was much younger I was complacent and got bitten by a large female, my god it was painful!
no doubt!
I have never heard of hognoses being aggressive eaters. If anything I've heard that they can be picky eaters.
can be both, I talk about this in the video :)
Im gonna get a hoggie in few weeks🥰 i wanted a small snake so i placed an order for a male albino conda hognose🥰 i already have a mbk and a crested gecko 🥰
congrats!!!
I guess I've been a little confused (lucky?) since Charlotte my hognose is the least smelly reptile I have! She's musked once and it didn't smell great but I swear Alice my BTS is so much smellier when she goes... Anyway I still love hognoses, Charlotte is my first reptile and I'd absolutely recommend them as a first snake, with research of course!
really eh? musking in captive western hogs is SUPER rare
Ive been thinking of getting a snake for the first time and a hognose was at the top of my list. But by this title im like am i wrong? But we will see after i watch.
lol I read the title, and was like “HA Click bait!” 😂😂😂😂
I’ve watched this twice and I’m finally going to buy one this year.
I love hoggies. Especially the Tricolor. Beautiful little snakes.
I agree!
I literally lol'd when you said 4 years and then...."Wait it's been 10 years?"
I got my first hognose 3 weeks ago, he’s called piglet! He thinks he’s big and scary and likes to hiss at me😅
adorable name!
Bullsnakes poop is a ridiculous smell.. I doubt they top that 😅😅 mine just stinks the entire house instantly
The fact that they smell bad is just an incentive to clean them up faster!
for sure!
"Climate crisis" lmfao
Hope you enjoyed being paid to push propaganda 😂
I've been wanting a hog nose snake I wud love to get one that's like ur snake color very pretty thanx for the video ..
Thanks for watching!
The first time I was bit by a western hognose I had some swelling and a little blood but no big deal. The second time it was a lot worse my whole had swole up and hurt for over a week. I would like to add that the second bite was a 100% my fault.
Wanting a CB plains hognose is half the reason I'm probably moving out of this state when I'm done with college
the other half is it regularly gets below 20F/-6C in the winter
I will keep in mind that poop warning though, lol
Keeping my hognose eating has been a challenge. She will eat for three or four months then refuse food for weeks at a time only to eat again without struggle.
This sounds about right
I have a hog nose that absolutely refused to eat regularly.
I've scented with frogs too, unfortunately reptilinks doesn't ship to Canada
Personally I think the hissing is adorable.
@@Paula-sw2tt yes, from a distance lol
If I was in the market for a snake, the stinky poop is what would keep me from getting a hognose. But their small size and derpiness are plusses in my humble opinion.
I agree totally!
My 3 month old hog nose is very aggressive and defensive . Idk 🤷♂️ I hope he gets better the more I handle him .
I Will for SURE get one! But I never knew they are venonous?? Ive watched countless videos about care and what not, never mention of venom😵
I dont mind tho
it's not gunna hurt you likely
@@WickensWickedReptiles you should go herping in norway once, we have some beautiful snakes and lizard. (Not many tho)
Ive been bitten by hogs and held on and didnt get any swelling just itching same with multiple garters
no doubt!
ADAM why did you make this video😂 I can’t own western hogs where I live 😭! I love hogs
oh man, brutal
We have a ball python right now. And we are saving up for a boa and a hognose. I want a hognose so bad.
Love Hognose snakes! ❤️😁 3rd breeding season this year and I'm excited for it 🙂👍
OMG, I giggled when you commented about their poop. I have one female that’s a voracious eater. A few days after she eats, her enclosure smells like the indoor pachyderm facility at my local (Oklahoma City) zoo. 🤢
such smelly poop
Counter argument: Look at the cute silly nose1
Top reason: When they pass away you could never imagine how heartbroken you'll be over an animal that was "only" supposed to be for looks.
It's been a year and I still get choked up over my girl.
Sigh Adam... I now have two and am trying to convince my wife to get more because of you.
they are awesome, get 50!
@@WickensWickedReptiles I'm letting her know a popular UA-camr supports me, maybe that'll help my case 😅
@@xanderxue5864 I condone spending your entire life savings on 50 HOGNOSE,
I have been trying to find a Western Hognose in Michigan, specifically Northern Mi, for years.
I dont think I will ever own a snake because I’m terrified of being bitten, but if I did ever, I would get a hog nose.
Still think they are awesome but for this video that is one thing I think they kinda suck at 🤷♀️
I just finished watching a video of you saying this is a top 5
Calling a hognose snake "kind of" venomous is like calling a boomslang "kind of" venomous
Unfortunately, videos with negative titles, actually get more views. I'm not sure what that says about our society, but it is the sad truth.
that's how this game is played
Calling a hognose snake "kind of" venomous is like calling a boomslang "kind of" venomous
I wish I could get one, but in my country you need a licence to own one because venom
I don't know I thought you were trying to talk us away from getting popular as this video makes me just wanna get bored anyways great video can't wait for the man to ask car videos
I wish I could afford a hognose. I think they're absolutely adorable!!! They're so expensive though, even normal wild type. I'll just continue to live vicariously through you!!!
they sure are!
I mean with their smaller terrarium needs are they really that much more than a ball python? More common morphs can still be had for under $200.
I want one!!! Huhu been thinking a lot about getting one.
