Hey Adam, I recently heard of an online company called “ReptiLinks” that sells frog (and lizard) “scented juices.” They claim saturating a food offering supposedly stimulates a snake reluctant to feed in captivity. Since a certain percentage of the Western Hognose diet consists of amphibians (esp. in the spring/summer when they move from the dry prairies to the wetlands) you may find coating a rodent in “frog juice” will stimulate her feeding response. As you know Eastern Hognoses are specialty feeders who eat exclusively toads (& occasionally frogs.) If they weren’t so endangered in the lower NY region/ Eastern Long Island I’d be tempted to try using that “frog juice” to get a captive eastern to accept other more readily available food items. I hear the “Lizard Juice” works well on snakes like Crebos whose diet consists largely of lizards in the wild. Good luck! 👍🏻
I drive northwestern Wisconsin back roads to meet snakes, and Eastern Hoggies have become my favorite. So far I've seen them in brown grey bars, brown grey circle type patterns, solid black, and my favorite, solid blue/gray with black cobra hood spots. All of them make a big show, and not one has bitten me yet. Just love'm!

I keep a hognose and I can say it's one of the best choices as a first snake. Very easy to keep, doesn't take up much space and is still quite unique both in personality and appearance. I actually think their smaller size is more appealing because you can easily keep them without needing the same infrastructure that a larger snake would need. And my boy is just an absolute angel, he’s so sweet.
I agree that there size is appealing. I don't think that they really deserve to be as popular as they are and they aren't for me but I like them. I just don't want one
That no eating thing is no joke! Make sure the young hognose is eating from the breeder before you get it. Even then they might decide to not eat from the change in surroundings. Lots of people recommend not to interact with a new hognose snake until it's consistently eating and settled because disturbance can set them back. I love my hognose but she goes off food EVERY YEAR for 6-7 months because it's winter. She's in an enclosure with a heat mat and a heat light on a regular schedule and still she somehow knows that it's winter time.

Fave snake ever. My girl is going to be 5 this year and she is my fave snake as she’s so tolerant of handling and is always doing something ridiculous. Thank you for posting this video! X
I'm really glad you brought up how aggressive of eaters they can be! Hognose have the reputation of being horrible eaters but when they get going they love to eat! Sure it's normal for them to skip but they also love to eat!
I had a hognose years ago, was my first snake and have been looking into getting another recently... couldn't believe how expensive they are now compared to when I got mine!
I paid 600$ for my super Arctic western. Would never pay that much for a ball python now I’m looking to get another hognose but one that’s on the cheaper side maybe a pistachio or a toffee anaconda😂
I just watched your hognose care guide video from 4 years ago. You’ve improved exponentially!!! Sound, video quality and your confidence is way higher.
Red is absolutely gorgeous! Still above my pay level around here but I hope someday to get one. When I upgrade my ball python (he spent 3 years in a nicely put together but small bin and got terrified by all the extra space even with all the clutter-he’s finally relaxing and exploring a little) I’ll have the perfect enclosure for a female hognose.
Thank you for your videos. I'm watching what I can to help my concern over snakes. I promised my daughter I would hold one next time we are at a reptile show. I don't want her to think that her dad has any fear. This is helping for sure.
I have a 4 1/2 month old male Super-conda and I absolutely love him. He settled in quickly, is a great eater, only refuses food when in shed, ready to eat as soon as he sheds. He's friendly and observant, started recognizing who he knew almost immediately. He also has a lot of personality for such a little guy, he never played dead. When I opened his deli from the shipping box he stood up and hissed like a cobra. Now that he knows he's safe, he rarely hisses. As Adam said, their poop smells worse than other snakes, I can tell when it's him before opening his enclosure.
6:45 My western hognose goes on fasts like that sometimes too. The longest was over three months (now that time was worrying), and there's seemingly no pattern to it. But while it means I doubt she will grow to be as big as she would otherwise, it never seems to impact her health (like your example she simply loses a few grams despite being as active as when she is regularly eating) and she will simply suddenly start eating again one day (and not even be ravenous as she'll refuse the extra if I offer more food than normal).
My hognose wasn't told about the not holding on/climbing thing. We had to add more branches to his enclosure because he would usually rather be curled up in branches than down in the substrate or making burrows, he also holds on like crazy. Not as strongly as a similarly sized juvenile Ball Python or anything but strong enough that I don't really need to worry so much.
We have 2 western hog nose snakes... And we love them!! They don't eat regularly, that's true... So it can be stressful for pet owners who worry. But overall they're the best!! Such fun personalities and the sweetest little faces 🥰❤️
The live stream was awesome and I’ve been waiting for this video since because I’ve been wanting one and you just confirmed (again) that they don’t suck which is good because they’re cheap, they’re adorable❤, and they are easy to care for
I love my hognose snake, and she doesn't hiss and false strike sometimes... she does it pretty much constantly, which is especially funny when she actually has food in her mouth.
OMG, I giggled when you commented about their poop. I have one female that’s a voracious eater. A few days after she eats, her enclosure smells like the indoor pachyderm facility at my local (Oklahoma City) zoo. 🤢
I wish I could afford a hognose. I think they're absolutely adorable!!! They're so expensive though, even normal wild type. I'll just continue to live vicariously through you!!!
I love my hognose even if the feeling isn't returned. She refuses to eat, so I have to assist feed her. She activates pancake mode and aggressive snoot books, but she's a cutie. She finally had her first shed (since I've gotten her) and I've been so thrilled. I think if I get another, it won't be one so young, though, this has been nervewracking. Love your videos! Looking forward to the Madagascar hogs!
I’m lucky enough to live in the natural range of the eastern… They are incredible. When my mother was a kid, she actually saw a white eastern hognose in the wild. I’m so jealous. 😭
8:28 Oh great now mine are going to constantly want to eat me later! I swear they are getting more and more aggressive about food as they get older. I've already been bitten twice but they aren't full grown yet!
I think you can try frog juice from repti-links to help a cober that won't eat by scenting the food with it. I think they naturally go after frogs and maybe you can wean them off of it once they start eating regularly? Or maybe I'm thinking of another species. Hope this may be helpful to someone.
Hey I had to assist feed my boy before! Got him and hadn't eaten in 4 months! He lost a few grams and since he's a baby I decided to assist feed. After a couple feedings he went back to normal, eating like a champ.
I bought an Albino (red) western hognose this august and from the start she was alert, curious and feeding on time, every time and passing the food regularly. She was 6mnths old when i bought her and I put her straight into a 36x15x15, included plenty of hides and enrichment of course, and she's doing great. My family isn't really a reptile loving family but they've enjoyed watching her eat and roam about and not a day goes by where someone hasn't come in to ask / look at her. I've never handled a snake before (except for a yellow burm I held when I was a kid) so getting past my hesitation has been a thing for me. I bought a snake hook and i'm hoping once that's here and i've become used to transferring her from the enclosure to my hand etc, i'll become a lot more confident with her. She's such a gorgeous snake and she has a lovely personality. She pops her head up to look through the glass sometimes when I come into my room and it's adorable. Definitely don't regret picking a hognose for my first snake. I think if i end up getting another, i'll probably get a ball python so I can have TWO snakes that are said to be picky eaters lol
I've always kept my hognoses in naturalistic enclosures and I rarely smell the poop. When I do it's when I open the enclosure and even then I only remember this happening the one time I had my boy on Aspen. That said, they never poop on top of the substrate which is probably why I don't smell it and when I wanna clean up the poop I have to dig for it.
I have grown to love the hognose snakes watching your videos and others and hope to one day. Have a couple. The only thing I can see that would suck would be them being a bit expensive.
We've recently gotten a hognose and have had her less than a week. She's very sassy at the moment; when moving her from her transport carton to her new home, she fake struck a few times and hissed a lot. As soon as she went into her new home, she burrowed and we've only seen her a couple of times since. She is however a beautiful snake, and we're very pleased to have her. It seems prices do vary depending on where you are; she's a regular wild type but was £200 to buy.
I basically just got a little baby hognose and she's so cute! love her little headbutts but she's a bit shy and just digs a hole in her enclosure every time so she's a bit hard to find
I love hogs because they have a little attitude, and I appreciate that in a person. They're also just gorgeous, and as you say, they usually eat well, so I'm not paranoid about them.
I've always loved snakes, I always caught wild snakes (black, garder, water, and venomous copperhead. I had a pet python for 16 years. Now my daughter has been begging for a snake for 3 years. Can't wait for her love
I was out riding my bike yesterday, and saw an absolutey massive female Eastern Hognose dead in the middle of the road. She was every bit of 4 feet and had a very chunky body. I had first thought it was a timber rattler getting some sun in the road, so I was going to go move it off. Was a dead Eastern Hog. Broke my heart.
For a first snake my hubby and I had intended on a corn snake, BUT, we had limited space- only a 40 gallon tank could fit. Too small for a mature corn snake and no guarantee we could move to a bigger place in a year or two. But that amount of space is perfect for a hognose! And god they are so CUTE with those little shovel faces. (But the PRICE! Oof! Even the normals were more expensive than the fancy morphs of corn snakes.)
I do agree about the hissing, or "striking", but i kinda like the sassy snakes. Speaking of them, i have one and she recently got out of brumation, she looked happy at the time, it made me feel as she knows i was thankful for her to be eating again, this is also the first time she ever went into brumation, so i got scared when she didn't eat. Then i realized it was natural, and when she ate again, i was relived
When I was a kid, I wanted a hognose more than just about anything. That was in the late 70's, early 80's. When I decided to get one a few years back, the hognose was my first choice. I did, as is my habit, a ton of research....decided on a Corn Snake. Mostly because of the feed issues. I still want one, and if I get a second snake, it will likely be a hognose now that I've had a few years of owning a Corn Snake.
Will you make a video about how to properly bathe a bearded dragon? It would be so helpful! Also, I’ve heard a lot of different things about if you’re supposed to help your beardie shed or not and I don’t know who to believe 😭
Like Adam said! Bearded dragons do not need to bathe unless your vet has instructed you to for some reason. They are never found bathing in the wild it's very unnatural for them. And bathing then can actually cause them to have a bowel movement before they have properly digested their food which is harmful for their bodies. And you don't need to help them shed just give them different branches and stones to rub up against and it will come off on its own :). However...If a piece of shed is being especially stubborn you can wet a cotton swab and very gently rub on the area, if it doesn't get loose the scale is simply not ready to come off!
I love my hoggie, had her 4 months so far and has not mistaken me for food yet so no bites thus far. Although i do take the same steps everytime I go to feed so she is now in the habit of knowing when food is coming so that may be the reason why haha!
I just got a Hognose and he's one of my favourites. I got him from someone who had to downsize their collection. His name is Gerry Swinefeld [name given by previous owner]. He gets huffy with me more than he does the false strikes. My only actual downside right now is that he uses a different substrate from literally all of my other reptiles.
I caught one of these in my backyard several years ago. The first and last time I have ever found one of them. It liked to hiss and fake strike, but became calm very quickly. Very neat snake. I wish he would come around more often.
I have an extra 20gal long I was debating setting up for a hognose or rosy boa. I was going to fill it with substrate and put in some hamster tubes and let them burrow. The poop is interesting. I don't know when my ball pythons poop generally, I just know when they switch hides they probably did, or if they leave it somewhere I can see it. I always know when my savannah monitor has pooped. Whoo boy.
I absolutely love hognose snakes but I know they would not be a good fit for me as a pet as it would be my first pet snake and they seem to be more intermediate because of their pickiness. Annnnd I found out recently that because they are venemous (even if rear-fanged) they are banned by the by-laws in my city DX
I used to own an Eastern Hognose. Really docile snake except outdoors. In the warmer months, I would frequently bring my shakes outside for enrichment. The hognose would always be very defensive outside, hooding up and mock striking. Not once in the three years I owned the snake did it play dead. It was a full grown adult male when purchased and it did succumb to a URI one year when we lost power during a winter storm and I couldn’t keep the enclosure warm enough. By the time I was able to get out and get meds, he was too far gone. I was a teenager at the time and probably not the most well versed on snake maladies. In the years following, made sure that tetracycline was always on hand.
Unfortunately, hognose snakes aren't legal to keep here in Missouri without a license. The state has a law against keeping any animals that are local to the area, so no hognose snakes, no garters, no copperheads or cottonmouths (which is probably for the best here), but I can keep ball pythons or other restrictors. So I have two male normal types, one that I got as my first snake and one that I took in as a rehome that was neglected and abused, he's doing much better though, and here soon I'm going to get a blue eyed Lucy ball python. I'm excited.
I don't know I thought you were trying to talk us away from getting popular as this video makes me just wanna get bored anyways great video can't wait for the man to ask car videos

just the video we were wishing for!! & yes, just more convinced that this is our next reptile buy. weve been researching hoggies for months and recently started actually looking at the morphs to finally pick one. thanks for the video! ecstatic for your upcoming Madagascar content. and like always, KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK.
Fave snake ever. My girl is going to be 5 this year and she is my fave snake as she’s so tolerant of handling and is always doing something ridiculous. Thank you for posting this video! X
I love watching you when I have a bad day, or a good day lol! My favorite UA-camr so informative and I love these videos !!
Glad you like them! You are too kind!
I'm really glad you brought up how aggressive of eaters they can be! Hognose have the reputation of being horrible eaters but when they get going they love to eat! Sure it's normal for them to skip but they also love to eat!
Realizing ten years felt like 4 yrs ago, and then realizing how old that makes us, RELATABLE.
I am an antique
I had a hognose years ago, was my first snake and have been looking into getting another recently... couldn't believe how expensive they are now compared to when I got mine!
so expensive eh
I am so happy I helped out my little hognose in a rehoming situation. He’s such an easy pet. 😊
Thank you for your videos. I'm watching what I can to help my concern over snakes. I promised my daughter I would hold one next time we are at a reptile show. I don't want her to think that her dad has any fear. This is helping for sure.
Glad I could help!
Adam, i would have to say bull snake poop is some of the worst i have ever smelled. i don't even notice the hogs.
Thank you, I've been waiting for this one for real my favorite reptile UA-camr
They have such adorable faces, I had to get one. Then I found out those faces are even cuter when they are digging.
so cute!
Fantastic content as always!
thank you so much!
Finally some good and accurate content about hognose. It's not a beginners species
thanks for watching!
The live stream was awesome and I’ve been waiting for this video since because I’ve been wanting one and you just confirmed (again) that they don’t suck which is good because they’re cheap, they’re adorable❤, and they are easy to care for
thanks so much for watching on Friday!
It was fun i was the person who dared you to pronounce my last name and i asked you what your fav species was
I love my hognose snake, and she doesn't hiss and false strike sometimes... she does it pretty much constantly, which is especially funny when she actually has food in her mouth.
sassy dudes eh
Can you still hold on it or is it a sign that they'll still bite at some point?
@@dorfkind9825 Yeah she calms down when I pick her up.
@@osirisatot19ah cool that's interesting
I have an albino Hognose named Hammy- he low key is the best thing ever… he even takes food like a gentleman…🥰
this is adorable!
OMG, I giggled when you commented about their poop. I have one female that’s a voracious eater. A few days after she eats, her enclosure smells like the indoor pachyderm facility at my local (Oklahoma City) zoo. 🤢
such smelly poop
I love their little snoots along with bps they have the cutest little faces! X
I wish I could afford a hognose. I think they're absolutely adorable!!! They're so expensive though, even normal wild type. I'll just continue to live vicariously through you!!!
they sure are!
I mean with their smaller terrarium needs are they really that much more than a ball python? More common morphs can still be had for under $200.
I love your videos wicked wickens reptile have a super day have a great day have a nice day wicked wickens reptile
Good afternoon Adam hope your having a wonderful day man
You too!
I just bought a baby western hognose. He is my first snake. I am absolutely in love with him. Wish me luck that all goes well with him.
I think you can try frog juice from repti-links to help a cober that won't eat by scenting the food with it. I think they naturally go after frogs and maybe you can wean them off of it once they start eating regularly? Or maybe I'm thinking of another species. Hope this may be helpful to someone.
Thank you for mentioning dung ordor. Something I never see and always look for
Hey I had to assist feed my boy before! Got him and hadn't eaten in 4 months! He lost a few grams and since he's a baby I decided to assist feed. After a couple feedings he went back to normal, eating like a champ.
I’ve had the same hognose for 10 years! They were half the price or better back then too.
they jumped up in price for sure
Very informative, thanks Adam!
thanks for watching!
I'm here just getting refresher/information dumb two days after getting a hognose snake. I've had corn snake for five years.
Nice!!
Haven’t watched in a bit cus I got a bit burned out abt reptiles for a bit and I’m so glad to be back
glad to have you back!
i have an albino hoggie that i picked up in november and i love it! they are awesome snakes.
adorable I bet!
I really enjoy watching your videos! I love Ekans and I can’t wait to get my first Hoggie!
Awesome! Thank you!
They're also just gorgeous, and as you say, they usually eat well, so I'm not paranoid about them.
they have wild attitudes
Watching this while chilling with my western hognose, Zipper. I’m frightened.
wicked name
I've always loved snakes, I always caught wild snakes (black, garder, water, and venomous copperhead. I had a pet python for 16 years. Now my daughter has been begging for a snake for 3 years. Can't wait for her love
I love hognose so much! Too bad Colorado has to be difficult about them.
Definitely heard, “I’m braiding hognose snakes” and thought, “Won’t that hurt the snakes?!”
HAHAHAHAHHA
I do agree about the hissing, or "striking", but i kinda like the sassy snakes. Speaking of them, i have one and she recently got out of brumation, she looked happy at the time, it made me feel as she knows i was thankful for her to be eating again, this is also the first time she ever went into brumation, so i got scared when she didn't eat. Then i realized it was natural, and when she ate again, i was relived
I literally lol'd when you said 4 years and then...."Wait it's been 10 years?"
Love your videos. I'll be getting a hognose snake soon . So excited 😊 🤗
When I was a kid, I wanted a hognose more than just about anything. That was in the late 70's, early 80's.
When I decided to get one a few years back, the hognose was my first choice. I did, as is my habit, a ton of research....decided on a Corn Snake. Mostly because of the feed issues.
I still want one, and if I get a second snake, it will likely be a hognose now that I've had a few years of owning a Corn Snake.
wicked choice!
This is the snake I'd have if I lived anywhere but Australia. Hognose and garter snakes are my favourites.
I love these little guys. My hognose, Cletus, is a sassy lad. Absolutely precious.
Will you make a video about how to properly bathe a bearded dragon? It would be so helpful! Also, I’ve heard a lot of different things about if you’re supposed to help your beardie shed or not and I don’t know who to believe 😭
no need to bathe bearded dragons unless they have medical issues and I covered this in a video last month. Enjoy.
Just bought 1, love him. He's more charismatic than I expected
I love to hear this!
Bang on with the Dumerils Stink. Thankfully mine only poop once every 3 months of so, but when they do, it's an event.
That wild one pooped all over me, just insane smell!
I just got a Hognose and he's one of my favourites. I got him from someone who had to downsize their collection. His name is Gerry Swinefeld [name given by previous owner]. He gets huffy with me more than he does the false strikes. My only actual downside right now is that he uses a different substrate from literally all of my other reptiles.
i just picked up my second hog on saturday. shes a red albino. her name is clementine and i love her.
Just purchased our first hog nose yesterday.. we have a ton of corns already :) we love them
I caught one of these in my backyard several years ago. The first and last time I have ever found one of them. It liked to hiss and fake strike, but became calm very quickly. Very neat snake. I wish he would come around more often.
This intro should a really channeling The Most eXtreme Era Animal Planet vibes
Yadi Yadi yada...but they are just so DAMN cute. Another great video my friend.
hahah thanks
Oh, Adam. You're such a Wicked Wicken.
some would say a Wickens... ;)
Whoo boy.
very cool idea!
What you said about corn snakes being constrictors 😂 mine still hasn't figured out he needs to constrict his pinkies 😂😢
hahahhaa
Thank you for this info! I'm looking to possibly get a hognose snake but still trying to decide if it's right for me 😊
This popped up while I was watching Clint’s video on hognoses, and he gave them a 5/5 in every category except availability, where they got a 2/5
I've been wanting a hog nose snake I wud love to get one that's like ur snake color very pretty thanx for the video ..
Thanks for watching!
great video adam!!!! now you got hog noses on my list!! i thought another herrmans/ an ackie was all that would be on the list haha!
You did not change my mind 😂 but I’ve been wanting one for years now and am finally in a place where I can get one
hahahaha my plan worked!
I fully plan to get one at some point, but my one stipulation that I'm keeping to is getting one that's already a decent/good eater.
always get a good eater off the bat
I’ve watched this twice and I’m finally going to buy one this year.
The way the little guy looked at him when he said they sucked. Aw!!
hahahhaa
I really love their hissing, In fact my little guy was called hiss. Reminds me of a angry kitten.
very cool!
I don't know I thought you were trying to talk us away from getting popular as this video makes me just wanna get bored anyways great video can't wait for the man to ask car videos
