I've been watching this channel for years and got to put my snake knowledge to use today. I was at a family dinner for my aunt who passed away last week and one of the kids found a snake in the dining hall. It's a very small garter snake. Yesterday it was 80 degrees, today it SNOWED. It's too cold to release him outside so I set him up in a temporary enclosure in my spare bathroom so I can keep him safe until it's warm enough for him to go back outside. It's been a trip and I searched up this video to refresh my memory on keeping him safe for a couple of days.
@@HandyDandy6I did not let him go. For two reasons: 1. It took over two weeks for the temperature to get back up to a good range to let him go. 2. I got attached. His name is Noodleman (my husband named him) and he currently resides in a 55 gallon tank. He eats every few days, has shed five times, and poops constantly lol
I had to pull this up in a rush because our rehab snake was in fact with children. She had 39, 1 stillborn. Came down to feed momma to see a bunch of little heads it was a shock XD Thank you for having this video as my mother [who runs the rescue] panicked!

Hello! I discovered your channel a year ago, this is so informative! I never knew about snakes but know you’ve helped me and plus, we had to do a test about snakes in school, I got an 100. Thank you!
"Oh. OH. Holy!" This is why we love Ed. I gotta ask though: can you do a video like this on Burmese pythons? That's if you haven't already I'm really curious about the husbandry of such a giant snake compared to much smaller species; especially when it's a snake that can outgrow a room, let alone an enclosure. Also need to eat big meals, and not just large, large rats but rabbits, Guinea pigs, maybe baby pigs or sheep even, and how often they have to be fed
I'd love to see this video too!! :) (that said, I kinda... I have to point out that sheep and rats are not EVEN on the same size scale lol . An adult sheep is probably over 200 lbs! a lamb.... well, a 6 month old lamb is about 140 lbs... while a burmese CAN eat a sheep, that is NOT going to be part of their typical husbandry. Sheep are pregnant for about 5 months, and while they CAN have 4 babies at once, 1 or 2 is way more common. A rabbit, on the other hand, have an *average* of 6 kits... and can become pregnant at 12 weeks old. -- one is a lot more sustainable than another! :) There is also the fact that feeding a huge prey item, even dead (though really, can you imagin putting a 200 lb sheep on a pair of tongs? lol) risks physically damaging the snake. A baby pig is about 2.5lbs when born. about 5lbs a week later.... and grow very quickly. (adult pigs have a really big range of sizes. Usually between 300 and 700 lbs, but domestic piggies are bred to be even bigger! the record holder weight 1600 lbs. WILD pigs also have a big range of weight and size. I'm mentioning this, because so many people think pigs are these little cute pink oinkers, but they are usually monsterously big, and were one of the most feared animals in medival times for a reason :D Anyway, they have about 12 piglets about twice a year, so baby pigs could be a more reasonable food item. however, pigs are also really clever animals, so I think I'd feel bad feeding pigs--that said, I beleive they tend to have a... well, when a baby is 2.5lbs and mom is 400lbs, has hooves and is not an animal built for dexterity.... accidents happen. so it might be a good, if irregular, food source.
@@jenetikitty Yeah, it's why I want to know about the feeding for their Burm, because I know of all those things being fed to a burn, not necessarily there's at one point They get their Guinea pigs and rabbits that passed away naturally from breeders Sheep and pigs are huge, huge meals, but I know of dead newborns from a farm being fed to real big snakes Emily and Ed had a ton of turkeys gifted to them, but I don't know if they've finished the lot yet They have also mentioned in the past that food doesn't always have to be the same consistent size for each feeding, because in the wild its not always the cas. Could also be the reason why some snakes go off food occasionally, because there are months where they'll naturally have no food at all and have adapted to survive
@@alexbenavidez4500 do they *have* a burm? I'm not the most dedicated watcher, but I thought they mostly had smaller snakes, except for peanut and a few others.
I'm glad I discovered this channel! We have wild garters as an indigenous species where I live, so I was always curious how to care for them (though I'd probably get a captive bred one, not a wild one, if I were to ever get a snake.)
All your videos have helped me overcome my fear of snakes, even venomous ones. I love your channel, and your channel is something me and my 15 yr old lil bro bond over. Thank you so much for your channel! Also! !!!!! Baby garter snek!!! 😍🐍
I loved the video! I would absolutely love to see an " adult garter snake care guide " to follow this video up! I would love to own them in the future because they are such amazing little snakes!
Thanks so much for the video! My garter snake recently-ish (a few months ago) gave birth, so this'll be helpful in the future in case of more litters! Sadly, all of her litter that we didn't let go (because she is a rescue) died recently as well. FOR EVERYONE HERE, you should know that there is a 90% mortality rate for the babies, even for captive ones. About the UVB, my snake LOVES going up there to bask. So... idk. Anyways, stay safe everyone!
Your mortality rate is inaccurate - it shouldn't be that high. It's possible you have a snake that didn't produce good offspring, but it might be worth checking to see if anything else might be going on.
"Since you're watching this, you're probably a beginner" Nah I don't even own a snake lol, but I love them so much I want to learn as much as I can :3 🐍
I was lucky to have been raised with several species of snake when I was younger and even had the opportunity to take care of a special needs northern red-bellied snake during my teens. ^o^ I can definitely say out of all the animals I've come into contact with over the years, Garters are definitely my favorites, despite how under rated they tend to be. I love how curious and social they can be. Their handle-ability is worth the pay-off once they're used to people.
Inspired by your channel I got my first baby garter snake this week. She's two months old and ate her first meal yesterday! Just come cut up worms with herptivite powder on them. I'm so amazed watching her explore, bask, sniff everything and even burrow! Even though she's my first snake, I even set up her enclosure to be bioactive. Springtails and dwarf white isopods in her eco earth/sphagnum moss/terrarium sand substrate! It's all thanks to you and your amazing videos. She's doing so well, even if she still slithers away if I get too close....😆 I'll be waiting until she's about double her size before I handle her! I can't wait to see her grow in my care ❤️
When I was a little kid (many decades ago because I’m pretty old) I thought my mom called them “garden snakes”. It was a logical name because they lived in our yard. It wasn’t until I was about 10 that I learned that they were actually “garter snakes”. You can imagine my disappointment.
I thought the same! 🤣 Then I _again_ misheard, and thought they were called guarder snakes- because they patrol the yard as if guarding it. Hahaha! I'm embarrassed to admit that I was well into my teens before I realized my mistake! 😶😅 In my defense, the local nickname for them is either red or yellow racer, depending on the colour of the snake's dorsal stripe, so I didn't hear their proper common name very often. I'm really not sure where that name came from, considering we don't even have Racer snakes here, and the species of Racers that have a range nearest to us have solid colouring and smooth (not keeled) scales... Maybe it's simply because of how fast garters are. 🤷🏻♀️ I always felt lucky to even _see_ a garter snake because of their speed. Never could catch one. 😊
"Garden Snake" is a pretty common misnomer for them. The majority of people called them that when I still lived in a place where they exist. It's a pretty logical name. They usually end up in backyards and flower beds looking for worms and slugs anyway.
I don't own any snakes but have always wanted too, I have binge watched your channel for the past month and have learned so much. I hope to in the next year to own my own slither baby, and can thank snake discovery for the information I need to make an educated decision on what to own and how to. Love you guys!!! Every day I watch a video and fall more in love with these little guys.
Y'all have made me love snakes and reptiles more then I ever thought I would. I'm terrified of snakes. I'm not sure why. It makes me sad because now I really want one. Hopefully someday I can get over my fear. Y'all are amazing! Thank you for all you guys do!
I appreciate the disclaimer about not anthropomorphizing the snakes when their buddy dies It's kinda hard to explain why it'd affect them so much With a quantity over quality life, living in numbers does assure more safety from other predators, because when in groups; like say a group of five, and a predator comes along, there's only a one in five chance that they'll be the snake predated on, which is far better odds than trying to get away from a predator on their own You can also argue that more snakes mean more lookouts for predators or food, and that's why they're so curious and inquisitive, exploring everything. They have a safety net that allows them to forage and explore more, with less threat of predators When they're on their own, they probably don't feel as secure, and likely can't just slither and forage around anymore because it's far riskier without the safety in numbers That stress and inability to function is possibly what does them in. That's not to say they can never survive happily on their own. There are likely some garters who don't mind, but as demonstrated on this channel, when a single unhappy garter is placed in a group, they calm down and perk up from the positive reaction of being safely in a group On their own, they're likely scared and confused and unable to live safely as they were before in numbers, so they simply can't survive like that Kinda reminds me of shoaling and schooling fish as well
It's true that they got where they are differently but all social animals break down a similar way. Humans stuck together because it's safer and provides less stress, and it negatively affects us after we're bonded. Garter snakes get their by a slightly different path but it's a fundamental part of human nature so you can't help but sympathize anyway.
I LOVE Garter snakes! I recently found a young snake basking in a cemetery and picked it up. It promptly sprayed musk all over me! (ick). I carried it about and it settled down in my warm hands as it was a cold day. I brought it back to my farm, which is away from roads (the cemetery was right next to a busy road) and released it near my barn. I later saw it with an obvious mouse bump in the middle which is just what I was hoping for! I would love to get some domestically bred Garters to keep as pets! They are so colorful compared to the native Garters were have here in Northern Maine!
Alasha and Jerrica Broughton actually manny reptile plants come looking like that! I don’t think it was intentional, it’s just how the reptile companies make them!
6:34 hehe. My beardy has that and basks on it all the time. One time he even tried to stick his head in it to hide ( even tho he gas many other good hides ) but was way to big. Lol

OMG Thank you SO much for making this video!! My daughters found a baby garter and a bigger one as well and they want to keep them so bad and I only had a slight idea of what to do to care for them and boy has this video been so helpful! Thank you so much!!
Please release the garters, it’s not fait to the snakes to keep them. Wild animals often don’t do well in captivity and can have parasites. It’d be best to get captive bred ones from a reputable breeder.
Im thinking of getting garter snake but my parents dont like feeding rodents, is it ok if u dont feed rodents or is it a must to have rodents in their diet?
Not super necessary. You can feed a wide array of earthworms (not red wigglers though) and thiaminase free fish. Just have to add extra vitamins and calcium to supplement not having rodents. Although frozen thawed pinky mice is easier to take than live (never feed live rodents imo)
I know some people are using reptile links successfully with garters. Look them up - they may be an option for your family but you have to find a snake big enough and a breeder who is willing to switch it over to reptilinks before shipping you their snake. Also, if you offer a variety of things like previously frozen, thawed, chopped chicken hearts & gizzards, tilapia chunks, earthworms and other thiaminase-free fish, supplementing occasionally with a multi-vitamin powder alternated with a calcium powder, you can keep your snake healthy without rodents. The reptilinks are unrecognizable as to what the original food source is, though, so they’re likely going to be a more acceptable food for your family.
Seeing the tiny snakes breathing is just too cute. Their entire body expands and contracts so quickly.

A rabbit, on the other hand, have an *average* of 6 kits... and can become pregnant at 12 weeks old. -- one is a lot more sustainable than another! :)
There is also the fact that feeding a huge prey item, even dead (though really, can you imagin putting a 200 lb sheep on a pair of tongs? lol) risks physically damaging the snake.
@@jenetikitty Yeah, it's why I want to know about the feeding for their Burm, because I know of all those things being fed to a burn, not necessarily there's at one point
They get their Guinea pigs and rabbits that passed away naturally from breeders
Sheep and pigs are huge, huge meals, but I know of dead newborns from a farm being fed to real big snakes
Emily and Ed had a ton of turkeys gifted to them, but I don't know if they've finished the lot yet
They have also mentioned in the past that food doesn't always have to be the same consistent size for each feeding, because in the wild its not always the cas.
@@jenetikitty Yeah, they got a big friendly one called Popeye who goes to programs
I feel like you deserve all the credit for making them popular. I didn’t know anything about keeping garter snakes as pets until I found your channel.
How else noticed there kitchen backsplash was redone it looks great
My friend caught a garter in their grandmas backyard. They kept it and thought it was just fat.
Now they have 11 snakes

Garters yeah!!! Perfect timing - this is my first year with baby garters and everything Emily says is 100% correct. Thanks for the video!
Ooh! I LOVE how you redid your kitchen with the purple and bluish colors on the tile! So pretty!
me: having a rough day at work
snek discovery: Here's some baby garters!!
me: omg thank youuuuuuuuuuu
Aww, garters are so cute!
They're so cute. I also love the new backsplash with the new counters - the naturalistic stone look suits the house with all those reptile babies!
Love the channel helps me a lot currently trying to convince my mom to let me get a ball pythons
"Since you're watching this, you're probably a beginner"
Nah I don't even own a snake lol, but I love them so much I want to learn as much as I can :3 🐍
Yay! You reached 2 million subscribers!
You redid your kitchen! Looks amazing, had to go back to an old video to make sure I wasn't crazy.
Omg I was literally like “Snake discovery hasn’t posted their video!”

Snake Discovery is on point with knowing what we want. Love you Emily & Ed!❤️
She's doing so well, even if she still slithers away if I get too close....😆
I'll be waiting until she's about double her size before I handle her! I can't wait to see her grow in my care ❤️
Oh, and she's a California Red sided!
I remember these guys being everywhere along the creek banks when was a kid. Super fun to watch.
I love you and Ed you've even made me want to have a snake or two when I grow up!
In my defense, the local nickname for them is either red or yellow racer, depending on the colour of the snake's dorsal stripe, so I didn't hear their proper common name very often. 😊
Same!
Same
"Garden Snake" is a pretty common misnomer for them. The majority of people called them that when I still lived in a place where they exist. It's a pretty logical name. They usually end up in backyards and flower beds looking for worms and slugs anyway.
For the first 20 years of my life I called them “gardener snakes”
just realized the plants look like MJ leaves lmaoo
"...some greenery..." 👀👀👀😂
I scrolled thru the comments just to find someone else who noticed lol
I really thought so too. I wanted to scroll through comments to see if anyone else thought so too. I mean as long as the snakes like it.
So, that's why her snakes are so chill.
Micheal Jackson leaves???
Hiiii I own 5 garter snakes and this video helped
Oh wow, you're first. Not like it matters, but congrats dude.
Weow 5 sneks? Impresssssssive!
No pun intended.
I love how belly scales on snakes are called scoooooooooooooooots
Me, who’s only ever had cats: Ah, yes. Very interesting.
They are so cute and very gentle. The little guy has shedded, he just won't eat anything. Thank you again 😊❤️.

I appreciate the disclaimer about not anthropomorphizing the snakes when their buddy dies
It's kinda hard to explain why it'd affect them so much
With a quantity over quality life, living in numbers does assure more safety from other predators, because when in groups; like say a group of five, and a predator comes along, there's only a one in five chance that they'll be the snake predated on, which is far better odds than trying to get away from a predator on their own
You can also argue that more snakes mean more lookouts for predators or food, and that's why they're so curious and inquisitive, exploring everything. They have a safety net that allows them to forage and explore more, with less threat of predators
When they're on their own, they probably don't feel as secure, and likely can't just slither and forage around anymore because it's far riskier without the safety in numbers
That stress and inability to function is possibly what does them in. That's not to say they can never survive happily on their own. There are likely some garters who don't mind, but as demonstrated on this channel, when a single unhappy garter is placed in a group, they calm down and perk up from the positive reaction of being safely in a group
On their own, they're likely scared and confused and unable to live safely as they were before in numbers, so they simply can't survive like that
Kinda reminds me of shoaling and schooling fish as well
It's true that they got where they are differently but all social animals break down a similar way. Humans stuck together because it's safer and provides less stress, and it negatively affects us after we're bonded.
Garter snakes get their by a slightly different path but it's a fundamental part of human nature so you can't help but sympathize anyway.
Elevate some greenery... that'll get you elevated.
I love the genuine reaction from Ed at the very very end
Are we all just gonna ignore the fact that she used fake pot leaves for enrichment... well I love that 🌿❤️
Alasha and Jerrica Broughton actually manny reptile plants come looking like that! I don’t think it was intentional, it’s just how the reptile companies make them!
That was definitely pot leaves 😂
Lol I thought I was tripping at first
@@jademay9047 same yo
There’s actually a plant that looks similar to pot, it’s called a money tree. But I’m pretty sure that’s how companies make them look sometimes.
6:34 hehe. My beardy has that and basks on it all the time. One time he even tried to stick his head in it to hide ( even tho he gas many other good hides ) but was way to big. Lol
Yes Emily!

Congrats at 2 MILLION Emily! I've been here sense 100k, plus going to so many of your programs before even knowing about your youtube. Super excited for programs to start back up, and to be honest it'll feel like i'm around someone famous! I mean it's crazy how just coming to your programs for years, gave me the snake bug.. and now I am so insanely happy to have a ball python of my own! I FOUND EMILY THROUGH THE REX VIDEO WHEN SHE WAS PICKING OUT HER TOYS
I found the channel while watching fish videos. They're video of catching gold fish in the wild came up on my feed.
I found her channel when I saw comments that she genuinely cares for snakes from an infamous snake breeder video
I was researching Reptile breeding and egg incubation.

IM SO HAPPY I FOUND YOUR CHANNEL AGAIN-
Thank you for this video. I have a red sided garter and proper care instruction is always appreciated. I love how active they are and how they love to explore.
Are you considered a beginner if you know alot about snakes and their husbandry and have been around them, but you have never owned one yourself?
me: only owns a ball python, "this seems helpful"
I'm sure they wouldn't mind a hide that was too big, so long as they have smaller ones too.
Especially if you put a smaller one inside the really big one. Gives them a sort of double hide. Lots of little crannies to explore. XD
I like that idea.
Just wanted to say that I love the new backsplash your kitchen!
