My hognose got out! And out the house. I thought she was gone forever. Found her in my garden sunbathing... 8 months later! Wait for it..... Over Christmas...... In Scotland!!! She is a machine lol
that is insane!
@@WickensWickedReptiles she's all good too, still healthy. Eating and shedding. She did look like a homeless snake when I found her again, all dusty and raggedy 😂
Thats hard lets fucking goooooooo lol
I just secured myself one of these babies. I'm so excited! (First snake ever! Constantly in places or situations with snake haters. Finally, at 31, getting my dream pet!)
Your video was so informative! Trying to learn all I can. Subbed immediately! Thanks for all the tips!
What size mice do these snakes eat? Pinkie Fuzzie Hopper or bigger?
Tenziie depends on the age, but exotic lairs feeds his hognose baby-mice
thanks for watching and Glad I could help :)
Not to scare you because it's perfectly normal but when their first brumation year they may go into it and not eat durring it but by next season they should learn they dont need to and keep eating normally and coming out
How is your hognose snake doing. I am a retired guy wanting a new pet. I have lost my dog and both cats to old age. Is your snake tame?
My hognose snake has never bit me, that’s the main reason I bought him. I didn’t want a snake that would bite me every time I try to handle it. Love him!
that's why they are so great
How about now? Lol
@@MrPutts-ri8my Yeah I thought none of my hognose would ever bite me. I've been bitten by two females now. Tbf both times it was totally my fault... They were just hungry! Even though both of them have been fed plenty!

Have you ever had a ball python, and if so, can you compare? I have a ball python now considering getting a hognose next.
It's actually a perfect place for their fangs as they eat frog and toad in the wild. Frogs and toads puff up when you put them in your mouth so the placement of the fangs work awesome to pop their prey.
My hognose never bit me, he gets very calm when I handle him, and I feel like he knows it’s my hand and feeding time he’s smart
Really appreciate your to-the-point guide. Really helped start me out with my new hoggie. Have had her for about 5 days now & she’s already taken a meal, pooped and comes out to bask and explore most of the day. Going to get a few more into her & start to handle. Awesome stuff man!
I just brought home my first baby “cober” and i am in love with him. He is so tiny and has so much spice! I just brought him home yesterday and I was terrified he wouldn’t eat because he was so tiny, but he took the first pinkie right alway. I got him at an expo and i was worried that the seller wasn’t being truthful about his voracious appetite and eating FT. Poor little dude was a little dehydrated from travel and sitting in a dry display box all day. He dank water from a bottle cap in the car on the ride home. I almost died from cuteness.
good job giving him water though :D
“You’re not going to find these guys climbing” then there’s my hognose who loves to climb. I bought him a 3D background and he loves it. He climbs and falls and does it again. I just bought him a tree decoration and he is starting to use it.
cool
Lol I had a corn snake but he escaped and was killed my my cats in getting a hognose and setting way more safety precautions and I had a tree for my corn lol

hey man. love the videos. ive been doing a ton of research lately on hognoses and your vids have helped a lot with that. funny enough, this vid was uploaded the evening before im going to see some hognoses from a breeder so thank you so much for the informative video.

I wouldn't say it's hard to get a western in sweden. It is hard to get a cooler morph though. :)
that makes sense
This comment is a year old, but I think breeders are catching on here in Sweden too.
I thought for sure I would have to look for somewhere else in Europe if I wanted anything other than a wild type hognose.
But to my absolute delight I found a breeder in Stockholm who seems to breed lavenders, snows, condas/supercondas, arctics and more.
I went from thinking I would have to fight to find even a wild type conda to being spoiled for choice! :D
I have seen charts that imply rats aren’t inherently more fatty, it’s just that between a rat and a mouse that are the same size, the rat will be much younger and younger rats have higher percentages of fat than adults. I believe an adult rat and an adult mouse will have around the same % of fat, as will a pinky mouse and pinky rat. But if you have to choose between, say, an adult mouse and whatever rat is the same size, you should stick to the adult mouse. In addition, an adult mouse should have bones that are more developed than an equivalent sized rat and therefore should theoretically have a little bit more calcium.
this makes a ton of sense
im saving up to get one of these cuties in around 4-5 months, will be my first snake. this really helped me thank you!
Good luck!!
I mostly watch these videos just for the cute hognose footage nowadays. I've no chance of getting a snake anytime soon. I want my first to be either a hognose or a Mexican black kingsnake. I know some people in the community would not call them ideal beginner snakes, whereas others do disagree and they show up on some lists, but not others. They're adorable snakes though. I love how chonky the females get. Even if they get grompy, they're something about their dumb little shovel-faces that makes it impossible to be scared of them.
I also love your little shoulder gecko. I honestly used to find leopard gecko's kinda boring and don't see the appeal of them, but they've definitely grown on me. They can be relatively active and handleable, come in really cool colours and morphs and the entire species share about 5 brain cells. I think I just really like dumb reptiles; it's the most endearing thing to me for some reason.
Beautiful hog noise you got bro. Very good info you gave here. I don’t raise snakes but I love watching snakes on UA-cam. Awesome video again 👍

Western hognose are some of the best pet snakes in my opinion, mainly due to relatively small size and easy temperament. I have found that he Terra Sahara substrate from The Bio Dude is a great substrate for them. But of course, they thrive in aspen too.
Update: Also Dig-It from Josh's Frogs, another good soil substrate. I add a little playsand in both.
In the wild, the soil they live in - their burrows - are often slightly damp, or at least higher humidity than the surface for sure. They will search for food in full daylight too much like gartersnakes.
your temperatures seem pretty high. Where did you find this info? or was just in your experience. I live in California and keep my hot spot at around 90.
Both experience and breeders advice. 90 isn't bad at all.
I live in Cali too. I was wondering…where did you get your hog nose?

I'll actually be getting a Axanthic het snow hognose within a year or two hopefully, if I manage to find a breeder! Thanks for this video, as it serves as a tutorial for me.
hognoses are one of my fav snakes
same!
Your reptiles are all so beautiful and healthy! The fat tail on that leopard gecko 💗 ...I wondered if you are allergic- your neck turned red as she crawled on you! Your videos are awesome.
thanks for watching
The first time I had them I had 4 females that lived together in a 50 gal over 10 yrs ago. They never had any issues with each other.
I have tons of questions. How cold should the cool side be? Does it matter which side I put the water bowl in ? Are humidifiers any good? How hot should the basking rock be ?
The picky eating is the reason I got a Kenyan sandboa over a hognose, and my sandboa turned out to be a really picky eater. So I'm going to try and find a decent price hognose normal morph at the crbe next month.
In my experience, hognose are far less picky than sandboas can be, but hognose are very "seasonal" in their feeding, meaning they will refuse food at times. Mine do that at the same times every year. They seem to always be ravenous or else refusing, and they never lose weight or suffer from it. Do not buy into the "feed them each week" crap that is on too many care guides. When hognose are hungry, they feed often and eat a lot, much like garter snakes do. And when they do not want food, they don't want it. Once you get to understand their rhythm in captivity, it is no big deal if they take a break from feeding.
I have kept Kenyan sand boas (didn't't enjoy them). Now I have a male hoggie and couldn't be happier!
I've been thinking about getting a hog nose for so long
you won't regret it

A 20g is two feet across a 40g breeder is 3 ft across. Im probably gonna put my male in a 20g and my female in a 40g and i plan on giving both a basking area with 5.0 uvb
not a bad idea!
I got a male hognose snake quite recently and he's a sweetheart. Only minus I've experienced so far is that since it's not a very big snake especially if it's male like mine, they can get into tight spaces where they're very hard to reach if you let them explore on their own, so definitely keep that in mind if you do so.
My goal is to be fully prepared to get a male anaconda hognose next year! Cutest snek evar.
It's so odd to me hearing adult sizes for hognose. As of now the only snakes that we keep our ball pythons oh, and our two babies are in the middle of adult hognose range. The size of mine vs many other snakes escapes me sometimes.
Aspen Fibers are the best for dry, burrowing species like the hognose.
they are great for sure

We find hognose snakes in kentucky to
I live in Arizona so I might not be able to get one but I'll see
Where in the world do I find a hognose for $75!? I went to repticon and there wasn't any. Just full of dozens of ball python booths. I had to search so hard just to find only 2 booths for corn snakes and one booth of different types of rat snakes. 😫 Everywhere online is like $175 and up. I've been watching craiglist adds for months just hoping to find one at a decent deal.
Depends on area. Here in Toronto area you can find them for $75 CAD sometimes

I’m getting a hognose for my birthday, they are so cute! I’ve been tasked with finding out all the things I need to know about the enclosures and food. I want a male one but I’m not too picky- I only want a male because I have chosen a name for him. Though I’m open to getting a girl I would just have to name it something else and have a bigger enclosure
Ball Pythons are my thing,But love my 4 Hoggies
BPs are also amazing
You have striking eyes!
oh well thank you!
Hey Yo lol
Adam… 300g + is very veryyyyy big for a female… and some breeders I know do find that females over 300-500grams have a lower fertility than the smaller females 😊
I love hognoses so much, I think theyre a dream snake for me but unfortunately in my city the by-law bans all snakes with any kind of venom, even rear-fanged venomous! 😢
I love em too
The leopard gecko was like “bro imma just climb back into my inclosure Ight “ and you kept scooping him back up
A good life hack to prevent your snake from eating substrate is to just turn their hide upside down and put their food in there, or to move their head into it after theyve striked
oj even just use a 1 Oz deli cup
Wickens Wicked Reptiles yeah, it’s just easier for snakes imo since the hide has the entrance that their body can fit into rather than having to bend around and into a deli cup
Please post a picture or video of your had with a ruler (preferable metric AND US customary, its not something i see in Reptile Videos, and angles and zoom can really create a false sense of size, even when you tell us length and weight in numbers, give us a reference!

Imma end up getting a permit for fifty bucks so I can get one eventually. Hognoses are my favorite because of how derpy they look and act lol. So cute. Heckin Missouri laws.
right!@?
This may be a stupid question but because my kids want a hognose snake I want to learn as much as possible. Do you get a UVB light and a heat lamp? Separate question but I know some people who feed them in their enclosure but I've also been told not to do that because they associate opening the terrarium with being fed. Which is better or is it a preference?
Ik this vid is from years ago but would you suggest feeding them with tongs and handling with hands to train feeding responses like seen with some other reptiles or nah?
I've always wanted a Hognose, but there not Legal were I am ;-;.

I was stuck between a corn snake or a hognose and I called my local pet shop and the corn snake I wanted was the same price as a hognose I saw online that I wanted. There were also some $700 hognoses but if you just want a good pet and you don't care about morphs as much you can find them as low as $130 in the us
I kept and bred corn snakes for years. The choice between hognose and corn snakes is easy for me. Hoggies win 🎉!
I bought aspen for my tank setup for my western hognose that I’m getting in April and now I’m wondering if I should get the beyond peat since it comes with the coconut fibers already
both are great options, I've recently switched all of my hogs to aspen.
Wickens Wicked Reptiles okay I heard mixed responses on using aspen from a lot of different sources so instead of using it all I think I’ll get the substrate with coconut pieces inside and just mist it every once in awhile....thank you for commenting I’ve been watching your channel for awhile (especially the ones portraying western hognoses) and I have decided to purchase one in April, and I already made sure they are legal in Florida!
I’m getting a hognose but it costs like 250 dollars.
the price has gone up big time!
I purchased my small male anaconda morph Western hognose snake for $250 as a baby 7+ years ago (pet only not breeder). He has lived all of his life in a ten gallon tank. Although now I am going to upgrade to a twenty gallon. He has never had any issues and been kept on aspen bedding, because he adores making tunnels. I did have feeding problems with him. He only ate live baby mice until finally deciding to eat f/t this year. He also goes off food for a while in the Winter (doesn't lose weight and has been doing it all his life, so I am not concerned). I have kept a lot of different snakes (for 50+ years) and my Aspen is my favorite. So much personally in such a small package! Aspen is very tame and doesn't even hiss at me anymore, although as a baby he was a hissy little noodle. I cannot say enough good things about this species of snake. Not sure Western hognose snakes are my favorite species, but Aspen is hands down my favorite individual snake. Oh and he has never bitten me or even struck at me, such a sweetheart.
hi, I have a question. does the decoration/ soil matter, as in the vibe from it can it be a jungle-theme or sandy/ desert-like theme.
the way it looks is subjective to you, just make sure the temps and humidity are right

Super Exciting!
I am so excited to get one of these snakes ! It's either a California king snake or this cute Flippin thing.
First off, great video. Question... for a first time snake owner, would you recommend the hognose or a ball python?
herno1 lol I know your not asking me but it all depends usually when you own a ball python it’s more of a bigger snake than a hognose but they’re easier and they don’t have any problems with attitude or feeding but if you were to get a hognose snake you might have some difficulties with feeding and they’re a little bit more grumpy so it all depends on what your preferences is.
I’d say either work. Just depends on preference. I had a ball python, now I have two. There’s so many beginner snakes though, I hope you figured it out by now bahaha
