How do you keep and setup your ball python enclosures?
I don't have a ball python but one day...
It's rather simple, I don't
I need to know which one is better tubs or tanks before I get a ball python
@@gecko-guy362 I made a video all about this, check it out
I dont have one, but if i did, id keep it like my leopard gecko, in a realistic non-bioactive setup
I shop the dollar store for all of my snakes’ decor. The best part is, the fake foliage and flowers change seasonally, so my snakes habitats are decorated according to the seasons too. For example, my corn’s tank was fall festival themed with autumn leaves and pumpkin (candle holder) hides, tiny crates, hay bales, and even a scarecrow. I think being able to inexpensively change up their homes and therefore give them more stimulation is something everyone should try if they can.
Thats awesome, never thought about that and I'm in dollar tree alot haha
Dollar tree has amazing fake foliage, I love it. It’s also amazing to fill up space in arboreal gecko enclosures
Same! I just give the foliage a boil to get rid of excess dye and they're good to go!
Love that idea!!!
Im gonna start doing that...its obviously good for the snake for stimulation but also keeps your eyes stimulated as well....I need a couple more totes tho so I can store fall stuff, winter stuff, summer stuff and spring stuff....lol..thanks for costing me more money...lmao...jk
This was a really good video. Personally, enclosure builds are my fav content, but this was concise, well organized, easy to follow. Good stuff, my dude.
Glad you enjoyed it!
What if I have a 1$ budget you said any budget?
I love shopping the dollar store for my enclosure decor (In AZ it's all actually a dollar still). They have nautical rope there that make great "vines" too :)
that's awesome!
AZ just went to $1.25 from what I hear. I just heard this yesterday though so I haven't investigated.
Still not $4 so I'm thankful lol
I'm in AZ as well, and we did just go to $1.25 😕
I'll have to pop in today and check... I know they were slowly rolling out the price increase across the stores
I love the look of an enclosure when it's fully done up with plants, real wood, rocks etc. You're setup guides are extremely helpful!!! I stumbled upon your page while researching Leopard Geckos about 6 weeks ago & am so happy I did.
I binged your channel recently and last night I dreamt I had a burmese python. First time holding a snake I guess. Was pretty fun. Cheers
you're awesome!
Yeah binge watching reptile videos has caused some weird dreams...I had a dream that I was holding a corn snake on my bed and then fell off the bed and was wrapped in blankets and snake and the snake bit my butt! Lol 😂
Thank you! I may be getting a ball python this year and this we’ll definitely come in handy!
awesome!!!!
I wish I could but snakes are out for me cuz of my mom 🥲I find them great creatures and did a lot of research and when I’m older and have kids I would definitely give my kids a snake if they want one.
@@Eye-Am-exclipse same but I’m still trying to convince her 😅 she says they’re evil though
Same ! I'm planning to take mine this year asw ahah x)
If you guys are old enough , just go ahead and get one. Don’t let others shit on your happiness, if you want a snake get one
My girl LOVES to climb! I zip tied branches up into the top corners of her enclosure, which is about three feet high, and she climbs up onto them all the time! She’s a little weird. 😂
That is awesome!
I love how you set up your enclosures. I purchased the radiant heat element and the Govee lights/ humid and temp gage. I'm loving it all. Thank you!
Keep in mind that radiant heat panels aren’t a good primary heat source, although they can be used for nighttime/supplementary heat (like CHEs and DHPs). A halogen flood bulb is the most natural and beneficial primary daytime heat source.
This is one of the best videos I’ve ever seen in my life. Period. Any subject, any category, period. Instant sub!
Thank you so much!
@@WickensWickedReptiles I’m looking at getting a corn snake in a couple weeks and your videos are helping a TON. I can’t wait to record it, I just wish terrariums weren’t $400+ for 40gal+.
@@THUNDER52 check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks, that’s how I got my 4.5x2x2’ front opening tank for $200.
@@nightinggale6470 that’s what I plan to do for my initial tank. I’m building the actual one when it comes time but I can get a 20gal+ for $150 used which will give me enough time to save for building an actual one. I’m looking forward to it. Thank you
Love your videos! I've been trying to convince my parents to let me get a Ball Python for a while, and since I plan of paying for everything your tips really help with the costs.
I hope it helps!
I loved this video! As someone who is brand new to the reptile world, this was great. Relatable materials, break down of basics, and enjoyable to watch!
I learn something new every video you do, appreciate you
thanks!
overhead heating is actually better for ball pythons because they are heavy bodied snakes, so having a heat mat underneath them is more likely to burn them. also provide uvb for your reptiles if you can :)
what watt bulb should i use
you shouldn’t have any sort of heating element without a thermostat anyway, which diminishes the threat of burning by a ton.
You can't burn a Ball Python with a 90°F heat mat. If a thermostat fails, a snake can move off the heat mat. Heat lamps, on the other hand, tend to turn an enclosure into an Easy Bake Oven if the thermostat fails.
@@TheCharleseye lots of bp owners don’t provide the proper foliage & clutter for the bp to feel comfortable moving, which is a problem in itself. it’s best to be thorough.
@@jr-nw4ed How very irrelevant to the discussion of heat sources.
Thanks man, I’ve been falling back in love with the hobby lately, I had both my ball pythons for a while, and I have to admit I stop learning after a while. I thought I knew enough. But I’m very glad I found this channel, it helped me quite a bit to start new projects to upgrade my enclosures and my pet owner level 🐍
Being from Montana we usually don't like Canadian's. But I have to say you are my favorite one by far haha! Great video as always man! Keep it up!
Thanks so much!! Go.... oh Montana has no sports teams... uh,..... I like horses?
I love the idea of using inexpensive, plastic hides. I am researching ball python care before I get mine and I am going to take your advice but cover it in silicone and coco coir, sticks, and moss so it blends in. I also live on 2 acres with a bunch of ancient apple trees that constantly drop large, interesting branches I can incorporate into my builds. 😁 Thanks for an informative video.
Thank you Wickens I probably will get a ball python in the future.
so great to hear!
Wish I had seen this for hide ideas before I upgraded Loki’s hides. Pet store hides are so expensive and I never thought of using these kind of containers!! Would have saved me about $50!!
What a gorgeous python wow
sure is!
Personally don't keep anything other than geckos. However one of the adult children got a ball python and asked me to do the build around 6 months ago. All my geckos are in bioactive enclosures so I wanted to do the same for the snake (thanks for the videos on that they really helped). The hardest part was the plants. As you stated in the video a snake of size will devastate plants. Took some research to find plants that would be reptile safe and hold up to a large snake. Turned out well (after a few adjustments) and the snake is much happier.
Omg thank you for the thermogun thing! I literally was able to find mine on top of the fridge because you did that 🤣🤣🤣
I think that you take very good care of your animals
thank you!
Just wanted to leave a comment and let you know thank you so much for the information very helpful and I appreciate your time for making these videos and your knowledge, you got a new subscriber in me man, thank you
I'm so glad I found your Chanel. this has been pretty helpful because I want to make sure I have every thing we need before we buy our ball python. you keep it to the point and simple. I've been waiting for Years to be able to own my own python and I'm pretty excited.
You mentioned radiant heat and also mentioned the heating mat. Do you need both of them. This subject troubles me the most worrying about doing a setup for the first time. I don’t have a snake yet but I am really close. I just need to keep researching, i want to do it right and do the enclosure and the snake.
I'm trying to figure this out too as I'm looking to stack multiple cages.
Great video 👍🏼
I'd like to see one for your California King snake 🐍💜
Coming soon!
So helpful, I will be setting up my Kages enclosure for my ball python and would normally go to a pet store and spend too much, will be going to the dollar store instead.
great to hear!
Guys I’m telling you wwr is gonna be #1! Keep up the great work man!
thank you so much!
Wam bam Bobs your uncle

.... that's hilarious
.... thanks for your videos, you are very knowledgeable, thank you for sharing your knowledge
Great video :) I always enjoy them! You’re doing an amazing job with this channel really. Happy new year btw
Thank you! You too!
Awesome video, you should make a set up/care guide for antaresia species. You always mention how much you talk about them but i haven’t seen you do a more in-depth video on them. I’ve looked around and not many detailed videos on them.
Awesome video me and the my daughters love watching your videos.
That’s great you did this video because I just built a new enclosure for my ball python and I’ll have it up this week. And love how you set up your enclosure it came out great 👌👏🏻
thanks so much for watching!
@@WickensWickedReptiles no thank you 🙏🏼 I always enjoy watching your videos and learning new things. Your one of my favorites 🤷♂️
I want to go bioactive with my rainbow boas setup here in the future. Another interesting video. Thanks :-)
I actually did a Rainbow Boa setup in the summer check it out
@@WickensWickedReptiles I definitely will check that out! I must have missed that one. Thank you!!!!
I’ve got a male albino royal python too, he’s called Lemon.
I’m upgrading him to a 4x2x2 ft pvc enclosure soon so this has been helpful.
that's wicked!
At 3:57 when you said "I'm never gonna find that now" I related to that way too much 😭 I'm always putting things in random places and then I can't find them later 😂
little tipto add for enclosures: Plastic sterlight bins work AMAZING, for smaller individuals walmart sells appropriate sizes, and for bigger bins, home improvement stores will usually have those. of course PVC is always better, but if you need something in a pinch or just something to grow in, def recommend.
Yep! I still have some BPs in a rack in bins for now. Working to get them all into PVCs
I just bought a baby ball python for my daughter and he's in a plastic bin set up for now. Once he gets bigger, I'll set him up a nice big enclosure. I'm taking this time to shop around and figure out what I want plus look at what other people have done to get some inspiration. I can't wait to do something really natural looking and see if he will climb around. I'm lucky to live right down the street from DFW Reptarium. They have so much cool stuff.
@@albatraozgirl funny that you say that, I used to live near that store as well. I'm pretty sure you can order PVC enclosures thru them.
I’ve done that for my young banana BP. She’s doing real well after he first week in there. Make sure that you DO NOT get a plastic tub with some fancy divots/ridge designs on the bottom. It’s messed up my heat mats adhesive and tape. I had to use 10lb weight plates to elevate it- making the heat mat press against the bottom. The adhesive wore off at one point and the temp dropped to 79 degrees when it’s supposed to be 80-90 degrees. So, use tape, get a good bin and definitely use a thermostat‼️‼️
My dad won't buy a ball python until I clean my room
get to cleanin buddy ! 🗣

Thanks for the visit
I think this will give you more traffic to your channel. It's a perfect length and great information. Now if you could get a sponsorship from a few enclosure companies, that could help them...
oh man I have tried, maybe one day !
@@WickensWickedReptiles it's in their best interest to work with you, you should not need to try. Basically it's their loss
In Australia, our Home Depot is called Bunnings warehouse
I always make my hides out of scrap wood I have laying around after I build their enclosures. It takes care of places for them to hide and something to rub on.
that's wicked
I know this video is a year old but I loved it. I’m picking up my ball python Sunday….. when explaining the heat, do you use the heat panel and the heat mat on the same side and same hide? I appreciate any help.
yes, this is how you make a gradient :)
Neither of those are ideal as the primary heat source, a halogen flood bulb is the most natural and beneficial option
Love this channel so much
Can you do a video on red and black ball pythons
Thanks for the video! :) We are looking to upgrade our little guy into a PVC enclosure soon. He's been living in a plastic tote for a little while. Could you link/recommend a radiant heat panel? I didn't see it in the description. Thanks again!
Just letting you know: RHPs aren’t the best primary heat source since they only produce infrared C. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option. They produce IRA and IRB like the sun, heat that penetrates deep into the skin tissue and heats them far more effectively than RHPs. Whereas RHPs only produce IRC, which only heats the surface of their skin.
I wonder how often an enclosure like this needs emptied, cleaned, and its substrate replaced. Like it has a clean-up crew so probably less then a regular PVC enclosure. But it's not fully bioactive, so probably more then one of those would.
the drill part in the beginning, was the hard part for me I just have a glass tank
With the ballies destroying real plants ...you ain't kidding! I did a nice job with some real plants...decorated it all nice . I went to bed happy. Woke up to everything crushed and my ballie looking at me like...yeah bro...what's up now! Ok ballie..I see you I see you
You just gained a new subscriber simply because you mentioned albino as your favourite I also am getting a female albino ball python tomorrow I was just getting a little education on what and how to build the vivarium to make it nice and comfortable
Good shit brother man! Very helpful 👌 and it looks great, functional and easy to clean. 👍👍👍👍
Thanks man!
I live in the US and there is no such thing as the Dollar store anymore...
4 dollar store yup and I just got my first ball and I watch you the most and I've learned a lot with your video and Medusa and I thank you she is a very happy girl
Hey I was just wondering what kind of heat panel you use, like wattage and stuff for a 4x2x2 and how you go about setting it up? Love your channel!
Could you do a top 5 geckos for beginners (I know pretty much all of them are for beginners but, like which one would be the most suitable for someone who is planning on getting their first reptile soon)
already have, enjoy :)
@@WickensWickedReptiles Alright thank you :) Love from the UK
Just about to say he has already. He makes great videos for beginner reptile owners. He’s helped me a lot to know what I need for my bearded dragon set up. And that I can even use the evil loose substrate.
I just got my first leopard gecko and would LOVE a bio active enclosure guide for an adult!
Great video and great build! The enclosure looks amazing. You got to love the dollar store. We have a Family Dollar, but nothing is a dollar, you have to go to the Dollar Tree.
yeah we have "Dollarama" here and everything is like $4
I read that using really loose substrate like the one you use can lead to impaction in the heat pits of the snake, have you had any experience with that? Also, do you feed inside or outside of the tank?
Impaction really only ever becomes an issue if you don't have proper temperatures and humidity and such, as for feeding inside or outside the enclosure there's almost never a reason to not feed in the enclosure and feeding outside can cause problems with regurgitation because your moving your snake around right after eating to put it back on the enclosure
I heared that its important to feed snakes inside, because taking them outside is going to stress them
Hi Adam!
With the new gene of keepers and breeders coming I am finding a lot don't know about "wonky" or lethal genes in all forms of reptile morphs. Could you do an update on this subject for us?
Thanks!
100%
I give my male ball python close to 3 feet of climbing and every night I see him using pretty much all of it. I had a female with 2.5 feet and she used it too.
that is so awesome!
Your dollar stores sound awesome, I went out today to pound stores in the UK and found no plants other than plastic ones glued into pots, and nothing else useful. I do like the idea of the bamboo sticks, I have some small ones i use for supporting plants with so I could use spare ones for my corn snake 🤔
Oh wow!
I made a planted bioactive bp enclosure with a cork and spray foam background. It's made out of stained plywood with maple wood accents and an old sheet of acrylic as glass. It costed less than $200 and looks like it belongs in a zoo! Heating it is a challenge but we fiinally figured it out after a few weeks. The most expensive part was the light for the plants 😅
They are Arboreal period!
Put that cage upright with a tree to climb and a hide 4 to 6 feet up and you'll find the animal up in that hide.
Hide at bottom and a hide up top.
These animals are explorers.
Rattlesnakes, Garder snakes that a terrestrial animal
I recently upgraded to 4x2x1 cages for my ball pythons I wish I had bought taller ones but I got them for a great deal used
great size!
I just got a Ball Python a couple months ago, and I was thinking of changing up my setup. Thank you for this video!
enjoy!
Can you do a bioactive setup if the tank if made out of sealed wood?
Yep!
I’m so mad I found out about pvc enclosures after I bought exo terra 36x24x18 three of my BP’s(have 6) 😭 same money or less could have gotten in my opinion a better set up for them also just moved to a third floor apartment and the glass tanks are sooo much heavier than pvc especially when there’s only stairs great video as always thank you Adam
I feel ye! Did you see the "I bought a mini zoo" video? all those enclosures down the stairs was brutal!
Oof, 36x24x18 isn’t big enough for most adults. They’re gonna need to be upgraded to 4x2x2’ enclosures or bigger. You could sell those tanks on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace
Update scored two 48x24x16’s for 40 bucks still alil short (one of my girls is a spider with a slight wobble so I actually feel better about it being shorter for her ) still way better now with these and alil tweaking to another pvc tank and all of mine will now be in a minimum of a 48/24/16 and up….now I just have to rework all my heating and lighting and power bars and my whole reptile room :/
@@Brentor14 that’s great to hear! Holy crap, two 48x24x16s for 40 bucks is a steal
@@nightinggale6470 they both have super minor cracks but I happen to work with a lot of PVC. For my job and have a solvents and adhesives that will literally melt the surface layers and fuse the cracks back together leaving it basically seamless and with alil cleverness I’ll suspend branches and rods to give them the ability to climb alil even with the lower than ideal height use there muscles
I use a 4x2x2 put bio balls and a screen over it then use bio active substrate pill bugs and spring tails I cut cork rounds in half use those as hides and put large grape vines for them to climb I use live plants like dragon plants and snake grass and have no problems but my enclosure cost 200£ and inside probably costing the same I have 2 7 months old ball pythons in bio active’s and a green tree python in a 4x2x4 bio and a corn snake in a bio active desert set up going to do my king snake and dwarf boa next and my other 6 months old ball python also got a birded dragon (4x2x2 enclosure) leopard geckos x2 (3x2x2) crested gecko (45x45x90) all bio active a b.t.s but no plants in that one because he digs them up
I love dollar store shopping and I found good things for my snakes. 😍🐸🐍👍
That is awesome!
Hi,I love ur content ....what do u think ....shoud I buy a leopard gecko from 'good' pet shop or from private man with gecko rising licence?Thank you!!!
I mean whichever you trust most
Sorry second comment! Could you do enclosure setup guides on Pueblan milksnakes and Western hognose snakes? If you have already could you link those? I just bought a Pueblan milksnake and a hoggie and they're just in quarantine enclosures for now. I'd love to see how you would setup those enclosures!
Have you seen any success with UVB lights for this species? I'm using strip lights but im hoping to encourage basking behavior that my snake seems to abhore lol.
honestly I noticed no difference
Do you feed inside the enclosure or do you move to a box or something like that , and if so does the snake have trouble eating in a box because your removing him from his home which could be stressful ?
Always feed inside the enclosure. Moving to feed is completely unnecessary and risks regurgitation.
I heared its stressfull
As I was watching this, my new upgrade for my ball python arrived lol! Good timing. Now I get to decorate!
That's awesome!
Great video. I get my plants for the dollar store also.
That's great!
Don't need no bio active setup. I AM THE CLEAN UP CREW!
so the isopods for the clean up crew dont need live plants or anything ?
Can you show where you get the tank and how big they need to be
Adult ball pythons need a 4x2x2’ (120 gallon) or larger. The enclosure should be at least as long as the snake. You can get them from various sites online and pet stores. You can also check secondhand sites for cheap used tanks, that’s how I got mine.
Dollar tree actually carries a lot more of the fake foliage and such.
for sure!
How in the whole entire massive world did I miss this?! Lol. It's right here. Well awesome. I'll give it a watch, and thank you SO much for having done this, it's going to be so helpful!

I LOVE this video, cheap doesn't mean less than.... thank you for sharing your tips and tricks. PLEASE do a video about African House Snakes one day. From K, in Orillia, On. Canada
There’s some good content here but dude that enclosure and heat panel are not setting up a enclosure on ANY budget. I think if a person could afford that heat panel they could afford a decent looking hide you know?🤷♀️ edit I actually watched the whole video and did not realize the enclosure was that cheap so my bad. Still Though on the nicer looking enclosures that I build I would prefer to just go ahead and build the hides also. Because it’s cheap. But definitely if you have a lot of snakes and tote enclosures and stuff I would probably do more of the cheap dollar store hides. These videos of been done numerous times by people though. although I will hit the like button anyway. I still enjoy your videos thanks
I cut out the 90 second lecture but the reason I use ugly hides and water bowl is for ease of cleaning because I have 100ish animals
I've been putting off getting a snake for a long time because I'm so nervous. I want everything to be perfect for them and I want them to be happy and healthy. It would be my first snake so I'm trying to be as cautious and careful as possible trying to make them a setup.
I just got my fist ball python and I’m kind of nervous because he hasn’t moved from the spot he choose since yesterday (it’s not even a hide) is it normal when you just got the snake?
yep, they don't move a ton
What about bioactive enclosures
What about them?
@@nightinggale6470 are they as cheap do they need the same substrate do the bugs need food
@@realguineapigmom the cleanup crew will mainly be eating the snake’s poop and the leaf litter, so you don’t need to feed the ones in the tank. You might need to feed the separate breeding cultures a little bit.
They can be a bit more expensive initially (especially if you decide to use live plants), but they’re cheaper in the long run, since you won’t have to change out the substrate.
And yeah, you can use the same substrate more or less. I’d use some soil in the mix, especially if you have live plants. Use leaf litter on top.
l always tell people that paying for the snake is one thing, set up costs dont always come cheap, though some can be cheaper then others and just as good, so it is a budget thing, one snake go all out, for me even with only 13 at this time, hit the bush and dollar shops for accessories, but dont skimp on the thermostats and heating for them say.
Awsome, Awsome, Awsome! Simple to the point and no jibba jabber. Which artificial plants do you prefer, plastic or cloth? Thanks for the dedication and edutainment my friend. Take care 👍🏾🇺🇸🇨🇦
Both! really the fabric ones kinda don't last long
@@WickensWickedReptiles Thanks a million Adam.
Hey bud. First time seeing your videos. Subbed and liked. Q. Just spent money on a big bag of aspen shavings? Did I waste my money? Also is artificial lightning essential to my snake thriving? Heat cable works great? That's what I just got for my ball python.
Yes, you did waste your money on the aspen unfortunately; it doesn’t retain the humidity they need and molds when wet. They need a humidity retaining substrate such as cypress mulch, coconut husk, or a soil mix to maintain humidity of at least 60% (ideally 70-80%). Heat cable isn’t a good heat source unfortunately, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial primary heat source, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option. A linear UVB bulb such as the Arcadia shadedweller would be beneficial as well. A ceramic heat emitter is good for nighttime heat.
Is coco husk the right substrate?
I think so!
I don't have a snake, but it's very similar to how I did my fire skink's enclosure. I made her hide out of a plastic bin that I burned an opening into the side. I use only fake plants in my enclosures. I can't keep house plants alive to save my life. And since she likes to redecorate with her burrowing, it'd be even harder. Makes it so much easier when I'm cleaning. Just take them out, throw them in a bin with cleaning solution, let soak, rinse and put back in. I don't see the point in buying expensive plants and hides when I can get them for cheap and then customize to my liking. You can't even see the grey plastic bin that is her hide bc I buried in the substrate and put plants all around it. I'd rather my budget go to things you can't skimp on.
Where can I buy the actual heating panel? Thank you so much!
Keep in mind that heat panels aren’t a good primary heat source since they only produce infrared C. A halogen flood bulb is the most natural and beneficial primary daytime heat source
