'Surrender to Reason' and 'The Bigger Picture' are criminally underrated. Melodic, progressive, heavy- and no extended jamming or solo sections. They would have been loved if included on older albums.

DT (2013) is the best DT album of the last 2 decades. Top 5 of all albums. Some refrains are just MEMORABLE, perfect harmony between rithmic and melodic sections. Just an amazing album!
For me this might not be the best song of theirs musically, but the words are AMAZING! My dad died around 2 weeks ago, and I was just remembering some memories of him, when suddenly this song (which I never heard before) started playing on my playlist. This song describes exactly how I feel right now, how I try to surrender to reason to keep me going and how hurtful that is. Also and the ending gives me hope and confidence for some reason... I gotta tell u THESE GUYS KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!!
I listened to this album with the CD booklet to read along to the lyrics and I got to this song and saw that the lyrics were written by Myung. As I read the lyrics and listened to the track a few times, I cried. I cried hard. I have the utmost respect for John Myung and I hope he finds his strength in life; his angel to wash away the sorrow. Amazing instrumentals, fantastic songwriting and spectacular lyrics. Thank you DT!
I just love this song. But I honestly think the solo guitar part Petrucci is playing at 5:34 beneath the ending, is a masterpiece of emotional virtuosity. This small majesty has been carved in my heard and soul. This is why he will always be one of the best that have ever been. This song is one of their best pieces ...yet.
This album gets knocked quite a bit but I love it. It is probably in my top 3 DT. It has a cohesive album feel. Songs actually have hooks that stay with you and not just a bunch of technical feats. This is probably my fave tune from the album. Love 2:35 guitar... Keep it up DT.
Absolute bliss starting at 2:33 to 3:18. That is as good a solo/transition as they have ever recorded, then 5:10 to the end, one of the best lead outs of a song they have ever recorded as well. Of course, IMO
Have you heard Circus Maximus? This solo is very Mats Haugen-alike. Then again Mats obviously is influenced by Petrucci. Anyway, if you haven't heard them, check them out. They're an absolutely amazing band.
UA-cam is always full of haters, you know if you don't like what you are listening to, you can simply click away. Just because you can't appreciate something, doesn't make it crap.
i really dislike this song, even though i'm a huge DT fan. I don't say it's crap, i find it very little inspired and pretty generic. All the sung parts are cheesy and classic minor scale stuff
That's not always doable. DT has always been my love and I can't just simply ignore their music. They have clearly disappointed a lot of fans this time. I would rather say that let the fans be listened to. They all are great musicians and I am sure the next album is gonna get their best effort ever!
I personally am a fan of older albums, i come directly from giants like "images and words" and such. But DT is always DT, and their music is always on top for me. For whoever loves this music, enjoy the ride, and stay with us and with Them ;)
Will Horton Dude, comigo aconteceu isso também... Na primeira vez que ouvi essa música não vi lá essas coisas... Da terceira vez em diante, tornou-se uma das minhas favoritas. Dream Theater é Dream Theater rapá!
Same here actually... never disliked it, but I never really listened to it unless I was just playing the album through. I realized it had been awhile since I'd done that, so I did when driving home from work today...realized just how great this song is and how much I love it... don't know why I didn't see it before, but, better late than never! :P
See, I'm in a similar boat right now. Wasn't too fussed about it at first (and, in fact, skipped it a few times), but now I'm steadily liking it more and more.
Seriously, the more I listen to this album, the more I fall in love with it. Especially the closer Illumination Theory. I'll admit I was not the biggest fan of the sound of Mangini's snare on this album, but I'm used to it now and can't get enough.
I get slightly confused when this song isn't held in high regard, in my humble yet biased opinion this posts easily in the top 5 best songs they've ever recorded. If you threw together a compilation of what this band is about, this song shows everything...cohesive lyrics, great mood, soaring vocals, great guitar lines, smoking solo and ridiculously solid foundations. Here's hoping they play this live before they decide to call it quits. I know you're not on the label anymore but I love you guys!
Breaking All Illusions, On the Backs of Angels, Bridges in the Sky, Surrender to Reason, Illumination Theory, Sleeping Giant, A View from the Top of the World
This song is awesome! I think the departure of MP allowed to DT a turn back to the Rush sounds like never before, and a gretarer weight in the composition of John Myung, as it seems in this song. The lyrics are strong and powerful, very mystic, and the music takes you like in a travel. Brilliant!
I Don't Understand Why They Never Played This Song Live, DT Please Reconsider And Unleash This Truly Perfect Song On Your Next Concert, Surrender To Reason.....Please
After listening again to this album start to finish, i think this album is amazing! 4 ballads or ballad-like songs (The Bigger Picture until Along for the Ride) isn’t bad actually. And the snare sound? Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but i think it fits good if not perfectly for this album’s style
The gem that got me through many mentally-exhausting hours at my food processing job in Los Angeles, Ca. from 2012-2017. John Myung, forever an admirer. RESTLESS ANGELS... HELP ME FIND MY WAY & STRENGTH.
'Surrender to Reason' and 'The Bigger Picture' are criminally underrated. Melodic, progressive, heavy- and no extended jamming or solo sections. They would have been loved if included on older albums.
The entire album is a masterpiece!Don't care what anyone said,I know what my ears tell me...
True, it's much better than The Astonishing album
100% agree:)
Agreed - and I'm hoping Surrender to Reason is finally played live.
Other than illumination theory, they are the two best songs on that album.
Myung doesn't talk but he's the best DT lyrics writer !
👍
Petrucci's lyrics suck ass
And the best bass player on Earth!! Myungmadness for live!!!
I can agree to that also.
Learning to Live.
One of Dream Theater underated hidden jems imo
SURRENDER TO MYUNG!
My life without DT music would be incomplete !
I hope that's true.
I agree @Wojtek Szmurło
Me too !!
Yeah...
I can't imagine life without Dream Theater.
In moments of pain
Where heart and mind collide
Self reflection helps me decide
I believe the sacrifices in life
Give more than they take
Visions flowing slowly shedding light
Memories swimming in the sea of time
Pieces to the puzzle falling into place
That with which we struggle through we’ve learned to embrace
Love show the way, alter my state of mind
Wash away the sorrow
Grace lead the way
When boundaries are found
Surrender to reason
Life gives you brighter days
Through sacrifices made
My spirit travels like the wind and waves
My heart and mind unite
Mistakes resolved give sight
The river’s currents slowly turns the stone
Love show the way, alter my state of mind
Wash away the sorrow
Grace lead the way
When boundaries are found
Surrender to reason
Restless angels
Help me find my way
Restless angels
Help me find my strength
Restless angels
Help me find my way
Restless angels
Let love show the way
Let grace be the way
Surrender to reason

There are few bands on earth making incredible music like this. I thank the Lord I can "hear" DT, when most can't. Awesome song.
This song gives me goosebumps. This is the 'Dream Theater way' of letting people speechless.
Yes I know what you mean. :)
I miss this album 😢...
reminds me of my late wife
This song got me through the roughest time with the most hellish boss between 2013 and 2014. Thank Christ for Dream Theater.
Thank dream theater for christ
Nearly lost my family and wife. God used dream theatre to get me through.
My favorite song from this album, everything I love about Dream Theater's music.
In listening to this album in 2023, why do people dislike it? Can't find much to dislike.
Wow. This song has so much RUSH in its energy.. I love it.
For me this might not be the best song of theirs musically, but the words are AMAZING! I gotta tell u THESE GUYS KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT!!
erlich123 Show de bola, meu velho. Gostei do seu comentário! Você conseguiu perceber que os caras do Dream Theater são iluminados. Shalom!
Vandré Marques e ai colega como assim? Eles passam alguma coisa?
Super underrated in Dream Theaters legendary catalog. Powerful lyrics and emotional resonance throughout. Dream Theater at its finest
2:32
this is actually one of my favourite Petrucci melodies, this and the ministry of lost souls.
I agree. It soars over the backing music and takes the mind on a journey.
Totally agree. You don't need many notes to prove how great you are.
How can anyone say the self titled album or ADTOE are weak efforts? Pure bliss right here...
2:32 beautyfull solo, simple and pure musically.
3:59 - 4:29, that bass + guitar combo is savage and beautiful. Each complimenting the other and being so fierce and vital
A Lot of RUSH and Maiden in this song.. and that is not a bad thing!
it´s like a tribute
When the feeling is right. This hits the spot.
Powerful, Powerful Dream Theater.
*The guitar solo has no delay and no reverb - it’s just dry, in your face, with a flanger on it.*
Simply amazing.
rush theater - surrender to subdivisions
Totally!!
True 😅
oh my days, I listened to subdivisions all the time, how am I not aware about this
… and The Looking Glass is actually some sort of tribute to Limelight.
One of the best songs ever musically, and lyrically, written. Kudos
I just love this song. But I honestly think the solo guitar part Petrucci is playing at 5:34 beneath the ending, is a masterpiece of emotional virtuosity. It's not a DT album, songs are good as their own, but the album itself is underwhelming.
@@subutaynoyan5372 yes it is a dt album.
A very good one
Absolute bliss starting at 2:33 to 3:18. That is as good a solo/transition as they have ever recorded, then 5:10 to the end, one of the best lead outs of a song they have ever recorded as well. Of course, IMO

Well yeah, like I said - Mats Haugen is obviously highly influenced by Petrucci. So I see what you mean. I was just pointing it out.
"Restless Angels, help me find my way. Restless Angels help me find my strength."
Unbelievable.
This may be one of the best songs of Dream Theater.
"Life gives you brighter days, Through sacrifices made"
I showed this to my friend who is a rush fan…
He loved it💖
Everytime I hear DT songs, I'm suddenly transported in beautiful dusky dream.
Matter of opinion :)
That's not always doable. DT has always been my love and I can't just simply ignore their music. They have clearly disappointed a lot of fans this time. I would rather say that let the fans be listened to. They all are great musicians and I am sure the next album is gonna get their best effort ever!
Once again, Dream Theater has outdone themselves! KUDOS guys! I really wish you guys would do a show here in the Philippines!
I personally am a fan of older albums, i come directly from giants like "images and words" and such. But DT is always DT, and their music is always on top for me. For whoever loves this music, enjoy the ride, and stay with us and with Them ;)
Lovely song. All of it is just simply amazing.
Wow! John Myung writes awesome lyrics
Absolute jem 🖤
First time I heard this song... dodn't like it too much. 3rd time listining to this song.... one of my favorites ever.
Will Horton First time i heard a song of DM i felt so bored....After a 5th time listening I LOVED THIS BAND!
Will Horton Dude, comigo aconteceu isso também... Na primeira vez que ouvi essa música não vi lá essas coisas... Da terceira vez em diante, tornou-se uma das minhas favoritas. Dream Theater é Dream Theater rapá!

You gotta love it for the solo alone but there're many more reasons.
4:00 Geddy Lee is that you?
It's Geddy Myung
A song that will be played in the coming tour? Can't wait to see ya in Argentina!
Seriously, the more I listen to this album, the more I fall in love with it. Especially the closer Illumination Theory. I'll admit I was not the biggest fan of the sound of Mangini's snare on this album, but I'm used to it now and can't get enough.
that solo sent me to heaven ... literally
I get slightly confused when this song isn't held in high regard, in my humble yet biased opinion this posts easily in the top 5 best songs they've ever recorded. This song is a masterpiece, DT simply has a LOT of masterpieces
Mangini's kit sound isn't the best but this song is easily one of my favourites.
I’ve never seen them play this live, it’s still one of my all time favorites
How is this not considered one of their greatest songs? Literally wouldn’t be on the top 30 of most lists but it’s SO FRIGGIN GOOD
3:02 yes sir
This song is amazing! Can't wait to see them next month in San Francisco!
The absolute best post-Portnoy song so far, in my opinion.
It's between this, Illumination Theory and Breaking All Illusions for me
Breaking All Illusions, On the Backs of Angels, Bridges in the Sky, Surrender to Reason, Illumination Theory, Sleeping Giant, A View from the Top of the World
This song is awesome! I think the departure of MP allowed to DT a turn back to the Rush sounds like never before, and a gretarer weight in the composition of John Myung, as it seems in this song. The lyrics are strong and powerful, very mystic, and the music takes you like in a travel. Brilliant!
Oh man, this song has the most unbelievable Rush vibe. Well done DT, i honestly thought only Rush could do Rush.
This is one of the most beautiful songs DT has released in a while. The ending is absolutely heavenly. Thank you, Dream Theater.
Dream Theater at his best
I Don't Understand Why They Never Played This Song Live, DT Please Reconsider And Unleash This Truly Perfect Song On Your Next Concert, Surrender To Reason.....Please
It makes me happy knowing that so many people also see this as an underrated song.
Such a beautiful song!! Almost perfect. I think it would be perfect if it lasted around 8 or 9 minutes :)
La intro es muy estilo Rush. Esta canción es genial, y el disco está excelente. Gracias DT!!!
Those 2 opening chords are godly
This song is Awesome! from 4:00 to 4:32!!! Petrucci is an absolute genius!
Life gives you brighter days
Through sacrifices made
My spirit travels like the wind and waves
OOOOO!!!! Thanks Mr. Myung
Lyrics are so profound, so relatefull , great song !
Love this track!! Superb, and so Rushian hehe
This song is absolutely transformational. Thank you Dream Theater.
Magic Piece... I don´t understand why the people coments stupid stuff, it´s just a great song, just enjoy it.
I get a feeling that this song sounds as it was supposed to be on their Falling Into Infinity album.
I agree. The entire album is like a throw back to images and words and that's the album I love. :D
myung bass sound though!!.it sounds like majesty bass sound.I hope myung uses this sound again n the future...also I love his jelly jam bass sounds
Grace be the way...
When boundaries are found, Surrender to reason!
Great Fuckin' Lyrics!!
This is Dream Theater and anything else matters.
Absolutely beautiful song. My favorite from the new album
doesn't matter. I will hear it 10 000 times.
during this week
great album
After listening again to this album start to finish, i think this album is amazing! 4 ballads or ballad-like songs (The Bigger Picture until Along for the Ride) isn’t bad actually. And the snare sound? Might not be everyone’s cup of tea but i think it fits good if not perfectly for this album’s style
And, i really like the more melancholic side of ADTOE and this album
beautiful melodies and great lyrics from myung!
I love this
Beautiful song ❤
4:00 Here comes By-Tor and the Snow dog
I don't quite hear it, but that shit is funny as fuck!
DT fan, btw!
Yeah, a LOT of Rush in this song! Two of my favourite bands unite.
i love this song. awesome!!!
THAT BASS!
The gem that got me through many mentally-exhausting hours at my food processing job in Los Angeles, Ca. from 2012-2017. John Myung, forever an admirer. RESTLESS ANGELS... HELP ME FIND MY WAY & STRENGTH.
Amazing song and the best album since Images and Words.
and in the end, the beginning of "take the time" fits very well !
For me this song is the best of that Album
Very underrated track. Love Myung's Lyrics here.
omg im 10 years old and when I listened to this song I thought it was awesome, can't wait to go and se DT
:)
Harry Jackson you’re 16 now, still loving it?

Every time you think " How are they gonna top this" they go and top it!!!!!
Amazing !!!!!
the kid from a change of season finally ends the magesty logo
cada dia me gusta mas esta banda...
One of the best songs post-Portnoy they’ve had.
Man the intro feels so much like Rush
I miss you Shannon.you're with the sun now.
awesome song!the very DT sound!
the solo in this song is very similar to the solo in "Natural Science" by Rush
some Rush here ?
Xolkyr I'd say The Looking Glass has much more Rush influences.
+Christian McGuire The intro is incredibly Rush-esque.
The solo section is pure Lifeson.
George McKenna Okay fine, you have a point.
+Xolkyr see I heard a LOT of rush in Behind the Veil
TK, awesome! Can't wait to hear the material from the newest cd live :-)
Pure Rush!!!
This is my favourite song...
He's just adding some finish touches to it.
