Keith Relf was an underrated front man, perfect for that era!
he was responsible for one of favorite bands of all time - Renaissance - the classic lineup with Annie Haslam

Keith Relf was excellent harmonica player not to mention his vocals ability, songwriter, guitarist as well. sad he left this earth at age 33. "The Yardbirds" recorded some of the finest tracks in Rock. well informative analysis and rundown Fil. I love their cover of Billy Boy Arnold "I Wish You Would" thanks Fil.
I saw The Yardbirds live in Auckland, New Zealand when I was visiting there at the time. On the show also were The Walker Brothers and Scott Walker (Engel) would not come on stage so John had to do all the vocals by himself. The Yardbirds were so so good and if memory serves me correctly, this would have been 1966 so I think Jimmy Page was there. When he started to play 'Shapes Of Things' he had an extended intro and blew everybody away!
It never ceases to amaze me when a hardcore Zeppelin fan goes "HUH" when you mention The Yardbirds. Sadly one of the most overlooked bands nowadays. The Yardbirds were definitely one of the top1960s British rock bands! Thank for the video!!👍

I'm so glad you got around to the Yardbirds. I was privileged to see the Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page) live in 1969 at the Montgomery International Speedway in Montgomery, AL. It was the last city on their US tour before they went back to England and shortly thereafter became Led Zeppelin. My husband is a musician and was a roadie for most of the popular groups back in the day, but he never saw the Yardbirds live. When we first met we were rattling off bands we'd seen and when I told him about the Yardbirds he was speechless. (This is where I drop the mic) Great analysis, Fil. Thanks. 🤘
I can't see how you saw them with Page in 1969 when Led Zeppelin's first album was released in January of 1969 and the album was recorded in September 1968.

Two songs, released closely together, is the only reason the public even remember the Yardbirds today; For Your Love, and Heart Full of Soul. These were among the first songs I learned to cover well on guitar as a kid in the 60's. Oddly, I never get tired of those two songs, although I've listened to and played them untold numbers of times. For this song you gotta have that 12-string tuned a whole step lower. Played lead (simple as it was) covering Heart Full of Soul with some other guys at school on a talent day. Nervous as a nun in a distillery, but also a most memorable day in my long life.
Superb video Fill. Having been a Zeppelin all my life, especially living in Kidderminster and the buzz of Plant being seen all around the town and at the age of 9 sitting in my Dad’s car outside the New Inn in Rushock as Bonham was being filmed . But alas I wish I remember these early years, but I was too young. Although i have spent my whole life being immersed in their music. It is so nice to hear the story of their creation. But you really did this story justice by including all of the things that were happening to other artists around the time. Little did they know the impact they would have on the world.
I will add this, not that it will excite anyone.. I was once a trainee manager at McDonald’s in Kidderminster around 1989. Someone said Plant was singing with a local group in the small, and to be honest crappy Swan centre shopping centre a short walk away. Omg his voice resonated through the centre. He only did a few songs of the day, I think a police and Bryan Adams song but certainly Rock and Roll. Stood in the cold his voice soured. Never will a vocalist generate a feeling like that again I am sure. Led Zeppelin as a whole and individually were pure artists and deserve all the praise they have received over the years. Being old enough to remember these guys on TV, playing Heart full of Soul...I thought Keith was the coolest dude ever. At the time, everyone thought they were way ahead of their time.

These are the two Yardbirds songs my garage band played, back in the '60s. Didn't have the talent for some of their other tunes, and we weren't together long enough to get much better. Still, quite a fun time for me.

In 1969, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty organized a new, more folk and classical oriented, band called Renaissance. Their first album was produced by Paul Samwell-Smith.

Please cover more Yardbirds. Jeff Beck was brilliant. Keith Relf was a multi talented musician, lead singer, harmonica player, despite his lifelong breathing problems from asthma. He carried his asthma medicine with him in their first dismally hot cross country tour across the U.S.
They were very well received in their appearances in Germany.
The Yardbirds had a bad manager even for those days. He booked them in venues throughout the United States providing their sole sleeping and travel accomodations to be on a bus with no air conditioning.
It was no surprise that Jeff Beck left the group not long after the US tour. Beck had become physically ill riding and sleeping in the overly hot bus and was also homesick for his girlfriend back in England.
It's a story as old as time that a very talented, very popular band hadn't been paid for many of their appearances because of bad management.
They fired the manager after discovering that he had kept most of their appearance fees for himself.
Jeff Beck briefly returned to the group not long after they fired their manager.

Aaron Dale Well, Rolling Stone and Billboard both list Clapton & Beck in the top 10 ever and Page in the top 20 so your opinion is just that, and means little. I have seen Clapton while in Cream, Blind Faith and in his present band and he would certainly rank in the top 5. I saw Beck on tour with Clapton as well as Zeppelin 3 times and other than Hendrix, who I also saw, and Dwayne Allman, who I did not, I would agree with the experts in the industry
Still got vinyl singles from the mid sixties, this track, Over under and Heart full of Soul...the best in my opinion.

The Yardbird's contain my top 3 favourite guitarists. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. So much talent came out of the Yardbird's. Graham Gouldman also wrote Heart Full Of Soul and Evil Hearted You, that the Yardbird's covered. He also wrote the hit Bus Stop, that The Hollies covered. He later became famous with the band 10 CC, famous for The Things We Do For Love. Paul Samwell-Smith became a famous producer, and produced acts like Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam), Carly Simon and Jethro Tull. It was Chris Dreja who became a famous photographer. He photographed the band photo for Led Zeppelin's first album, at Jimmy Page's request. Eric Clapton had success with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, another short lived supergroup, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes and as a solo artist. Jeff Beck had success with the Jeff Beck Group and as a solo artist. Jimmy Page had success with Led Zeppelin, The Firm and with Coverdale Page. John Paul Jones also played bass on the Yardbirds tracks like Little Games, (he also did the string arrangements on that track), No Excess Baggage, and Good Night Sweet Josephine. The Yardbird's and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers had a lot of musical talent come out of them. I own a few on the Yardbird's CDs, from the Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and the Jimmy Page era. 5 Live Yardbirds is a great CD. Keith Relf tragically died in 1976, aged 33, due to an improperly earthed (grounded) electric guitar he was practicing on. For an asthma suffer, who lost a lung, he sure was a great harmonica player. How crazy is watching Jeff Beck playing a 12-string acoustic guitar and doing backing vocals...
I always liked their version of "I'm a Man" and "Smokestack Lightning" and that one New Yardbirds live album with a raw "Dazed and Confused" that's absolute fire.
Beck's guitar sound at the beginning of "Train kept a Rollin'" where he imitates a train whistle was fantastic.
@Mike Hfuhruhurr It was kind of obscure so no worries. I had collected lots of bootlegs that all disappeared when I was in the service and I think that was one.
If you can track down the live Yardbirds bootleg 'Last Rave-up in L.A ', with Page from March of 1968...
The intro bass riff to 'Smokestack Lightning' is 'How Many More Times'.

Chris: I erred when I said 'Last Rave-up...' was recorded in March of 1968. That was 'Live Yardbirds with Jimmy Page'.
'Last Rave-up...' was recorded later, May I think. It's an audience tape with lots of noise but it's a complete performance and Jimmy is absolutely on fire.
I remember MTV showing these 60's videos way back in its early years. I remember watching Jeff Beck running back and forth stomping boxes for "Heart Full of Soul".

Lucky me! When I was 14 years old I saw the short lived Page and Beck lineup live in a ballroom in NW Iowa. For some reason Page was playing bass that night but what a show that was.
Brian Newell - He started out on bass briefly but Page wasn’t really a bass player per say... But they got a bass player and Page played guitar. Must have been awesome to see...
ipsurvivor Page never "started out" on bass. He was a Rhythm/lead guitarist who learned "skiffing" at an early age then became a studio session guitarist to make a living. He became proficient on bass enough to play bass while giving guitarist Drea a chance to learn bass until Beck could be folded back into the band permanently after his illness. Of course after that happened, it's like Fil said, Moon, Drea and the singer at the time all wanted to move into a different direction than the hip "phsycadelic" craze that was trending by then....in comes plant and Bonham and JPJ. But Page and Beck were in at the same time for a short period and Beck wasn't a bassist so it was possible to see Page on bass for a bit until Beck was out and a true quality bassist like Jones was added.
@@toddpeucker9905 I believe JPJ actually played some bass tracks for the Yard Birds in studio. I could be wrong. Led Zeppelin actually played their 1st few shows as the Yard Birds to honor their contracts.
Todd Peucker - Woah Buddy... I already knew a long time ago Page was on TV in 1957 playing guitar in a Skiffle group. I had Led Zeppelin albums in the 70s so you’re preaching to the choir. IN THE YARDBIRDS PAGE STARTED AS THE Bassist until Chris Dreja switched from rhythm guitar to bass... If I fill in every gap it’s like cleaning an industrial oven... I DID NOT SAY THAT JIMMY STARTED OUT WAY BACK IN THE 50s AS A BASSIST...
Page did in fact start out as the bass player FOR THE YARDBIRDS. Maybe this will clear it up for you:
Roger the Engineer was released in June 1966. Soon afterwards, Samwell-Smith quit the band at a drunken gig at Queen's College in Oxford[26] and embarked on a career as a record producer. Jimmy Page, who was at the show, agreed that night to play bass until rhythm guitarist Dreja could rehearse on the instrument.

Jimmy Page, John Bonham and John Paul Jones played on Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man.
From Clapton to Beck to Page in a span of five years. The Yardbirds are the single most influential guitar band ever.
Now, there was this blues guru named John Mayall. Eric joined his Bluesbreakers then left to form Cream. EC was replaced by Peter Green who then left to found Fleetwood Mac. "Greenie" was replaced by Mick Taylor who later left to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones. That's pretty strong too!
Postscript: In an interview shortly before his death Phil Lynott said he hoped Thin Lizzy would be remembered like The Yardbirds are; as a great guitar band.

I was born in '57 and this is part of some of the first music I remember dancing around to along with the Beatles and Monkeys in the mid '60's. (I'm sure my older brother & sister exposed me to it.) Such great music over the years that I have forgotten about! Not sure how I came across your channel, but it's a great trip down memory lane. I don't understand much of the analysis not being a musician, but I do love the history of the band section. You must do a ton of research for each analysis! I absolutely love music and have it on in the background a lot. Now I'm revisiting the stuff from my teens & college years with your inspiration. Thank you Fil! I am still not too old to dance around!

The band was announced in Copenhagen as The New Yardbirds.. later They were warm up band for Counutry Joe in Copenhagen. I was there! Completely in awe of Robert Plants Vocals and Jimmy Pages unique guitar and theramin play. Their interaction was Something Else. Next morning directly to Music store for the first !ed Zeppelin album.

Thanks for your detailed analysis and for detailing the band's evolution. I had thought that Keith Relf died from being electrocuted onstage.
Musically, to me, there is nothing more exciting and educational (if that's the right word) than having watched these groups change, grow and evolve, and to see the various musicians/singers who worked with them, even if for a short time, like Clapton, for example, because all those people left their individual stamp on those groups. You just have to sometimes listen carefully to hear this.

Thanks for the memories here, Fil, I had the pleasure of bumping in to Robert Plant quite often at the Railway Inn on Curzon Street in Brum. It was around 70, 71, but for a couple of years thereabouts. Regular haunt for upcoming and already popular artists, I was a jobbing guitar/vocal kiddie - y'know, networking :-). Would not be unusual to find the likes of Jeff Lynne, Raymond Froggat and Percy Plant in the place at the same time, and if the mood was right they'd get up with the band and jam up a bit. Robert Plant didn't I seem to remember, he was actually very 'considered' about where he performed and who he performed to. Oh, I met Peter Grant, too, so I know why ...? :-D Jeff Lynne even used to let me have a go on his guitar, but that's another story. Fab history, thanks for going in deep!
Wow, never knew The Yardbirds recorded with Sam Phillips at Sun studio. Also, "Blow Up", one of my favorite thriller movies of all time. This was really good...thanks Fil.

@@wingsofpegasus Yeah, "Blow Out" was a 1981 John Travolta thriller based on the the movie " Blow Up", the difference being in the Travolta movie, a murder is captured on audio instead of a murder captured on film as in "Blow Up."
from what I've read the Yardbirds played in Memphis at a local club more than once even borrowing a guitar from a local band here

I was 15 when this track came out. Graham Gouldman who wrote this song also wrote many hits for different artists in the 60s and then went on to be a founder member of 10cc.

After leaving the Yardbirds Jeff Beck formed the Jeff Beck Group with a certain Rod Stewart on vocals. Albums release were Beck Ola and Truth.

The Yardbirds w/Jimmy Page played in the 1966 Brit movie: "Blow-Up"...live on stage as part of the London scene 4 that movie. They were impressive at that time, as well. Thx 4 this one, Fil 🙂🙂🤘🤘

Great history lesson Fil! Hard to believe i was 9 years old and listing to this.
When you think of how many innovative bands Britain gave the world just in the 60's it boggles the mind.
That’s why they called it the British Invasion of the States.
The original recording had Brian Auger on harpsichord, the part Beck played on the 12-string in this video. Auger wondered, "Who, in their right mind, is going to buy a pop single with harpsichord on it?"
Julie Driscoll was the fan club secretary and all my letters from the fan club disappeared in the smoke filled rooms we listened all the great bands in Stockholm.
I feel old now. Saw the yardbirds then. Loved them. Still do.
Glad you mentioned Crawdaddy Club, Fil. I was a regular at the Crawdaddy, Richmond Athletic Ground, with my friends when we were about 14 and used to see the Rolling Stones as the resident house band. They were then followed by the Yardbirds as the house band and we were there the night Keith announced that Eric Clapton would be leaving and going to America. So nice to think we could get up close and personal with these great musicians and dance along in front of the stage!

It's kind of odd too see Jeff Beck using a pick. I'm so used to him playing with his fingers. I've always loved Beck - I have his Live at Ronnie Scott's DVD and I love to watch his technique. I think he's a real musician's musician.
Very informative Fil. You mentioned Terry Reid and I think he would be a great artist for you to highlight. There was a very good reason he was the first vocalist to be asked - he is a superb singer and his Seed Of Memory album is an under-appreciated classic.

Hi Fil, I grew up in NZ and remember The Peddlers were big in 69-70 with ‘Girly’ their hit single. I have seen on YT their appearance on the David Frost show performing ‘Birth’. As I am not a musician, I need one (you) to anylise the group, song and performance to give me a technical understanding of the feeling I get when viewing it. Graham Gouldman was hit making "machine" in that era (and later with 10cc.) I can't remember now all, but one example Herman's Hermits "No milk today."

Tallyman for Jeff Beck etc. I believe I've once seen a video, where 10cc's Eric Stewart is playing guitar in the live performance of the Yardbirds...So Yardbirds seems to be same kind of melting pot in its own genre like John Mayall's Bluesbreakers was in English blues genre
No autotune, no gimmicks, no dancers, no light show .... a live performance raw and in tune. And the perfomers as clean cut as it's possible to be. Oh and has anyone else noticed how slim people are in the early 60s?
Everthing you mentioned requires talent, and to cut the story short that's why this music or anything remotely influenced by it is not recognized today. Mostly because generations much younger relate to sensitive narcissistic pop artists, just like themselves.
Everyone smoked back then. Many did speed. Great way to kill appetite and lose weight.
It was different. Coming out the clubs, you had to learn to perform! The Yardbirds were a tight band! Even within limits of the BBC they were spot on with not a single, wasted note!

This was some info I hadn’t known or just never put 2 and 2 together, thanks for the breakdown. I’ve always Ben a Clapton fan so I knew the piece with him with the Yardbirds, Cream, Derrick and the Domino’s, etc.. the back story of Layla is interesting as well.

The film in question was actually Michelangelo Antonioni's 'BLOW UP', which refers to a photographic print enlargement, the subject focus of the movie.

They played back up for Donovan. Jimmy asked Robert Plant to do vocals and asked to keep the concert dates after Keith and Jim left. So they might have formed the group without being the "New Yardbirds" first. Keith joined Renaissance, then he and Jim formed Armageddon. Keith died in May 14th 1976.
