My brother bought this album in 66... I was 16 at the time. I played this album so much I wore the grooves out of it. We had a Japanese exchange student that came to my school in 1967. Somehow the Ventures came up....he said he was at the live show and could prove it. On the back of the cover was some shots of the crowd and low and behold he is in the pic. He was wearing a very distinct striped sweater in the shot...a few days later he showed up at school with the exact same sweater.

Great video as always! I saw the Ventures on this very tour in 1966 on the island of Okinawa as a 17 years old. My father was in the US Air Force and we were stationed on Okinawa. That was a popular theme in those days. There was a pop-classical orchestra back in the 50's called "101 Strings" and their covers always used pictures of pretty young girls doing fun things. Fil, you have no idea what a kick it is to watch your historical, video treatments of these unique, memorable artists and groups. Your appreciation and musical knowledge of your subjects is very enjoyable to see and hear. Wonderful performance. Mel Taylor proves yet again that a great drummer can get a wide variety of fantastic tones out of a kit of basically any size. You don't need thirty toms and two dozen cymbals to get massive tone from the drums.

Mel Taylor was the house drummer at The Palomino which was a Country Western music club in Southern California. Bob and Don saw him play drums at The Palomino and saw his talent and asked him to join the band.
Thank you for making a video featuring my favorite band! Another first fact: Nokie Edwards was the first to use a purpose built compressor pedal used during the recording sessions for 'The Ventures in Space' album in late 1963. The prototype fuzz and compressor pedals that he used were designed and made by Orville 'Red' Rhodes.
Two of the greatest drummers ever were associated with Surf Music. Mel Taylor, played for The Ventures. Keith Moon, probably WISHED he could play for the Ventures. Apparently Surf was his favourite music.
My first band formed in 1966, and at that time, whatever your repertoire, EVERY band with a half-decent drummer did Wipeout - it really was all but mandatory. If you had a decent guitarist (and especially if you were a little weak in the vocals dept.), you'd have Walk Don't Run, Pipeline and maybe a few other Ventures tunes like Apache or Perfidia on your playlist as well. The Ventures didn't have that many singles hits, but their albums were such a rich source of instrumental material for so many amateur bands, no other band really compares. I owned one Ventures album, I think it even had a track or two recorded live in Japan. In the course of multiple moves and communal houses it somehow got lost. Damn. Thanks for covering them, I really didn't know any of their history, or even their names.
One of the all time favorites, for sure. Thanks Fil, great work on giving the back story as well as the praise they deserve. Ahh...great to be reminded of the golden sixties with treasures like this rare video. Awesome! Like 39, C27, V134. /:-)
They were the reason I first picked up a guitar, in the early 1960s. I had forgotten how SUPERB they were, and what a MONSTER their drummer was. They were so far ahead of everyone on the guitar at the time, in terms of techniques, tone and precision. Utterly incredible. Starting at 00:01:39, they turn, and it's like hearing a chorus of street-singers - so aware of each other, and what fit and what didn't. I fear they will be forgotten - but I seldom hear them anymore. Nokie (and the guitar player who played the theme song from Bonanza) were my heroes first up.
I always click the like button before you even start the video cause I know it's going to be epic. I can totally relate to the "only clean" tones these guys had to work with, as I started playing in bars and parties in 1961 before there was any OD of any kind. You had to rock it faster sometimes to up the profile. The first 'fuzztone' made a real difference live. Thanks for all your great efforts to put this stuff in perspective for the youngsters. Love your channel!!!!!!!!!!
“Walk Don’t Run” was a must-learn tune for all of us who were learning guitar in the very early 1960’s. A jazz instrumental from the 50’s, The Ventures turned it into a rock and roll “guitar lesson” song for rookie guitarists.
One thing I noticed was that Nokie doesn't play the lead on Walk Don't Run. I saw then in Quebec in 2010 and after playing Walk Don't Run they switched off guitars and Nokie played lead after that song, Nokie was playing Bass. The initial drummer for Walk `don't run was a USAF General who played with them eventually.
Fil, not even considering your analyses, you're a genius in being able to find these high def, quality video live performances. Thanks so very much for your diligence!
Walk, Don't Run (the '64 version) is the first song I learned on guitar. I'm "only" 31, and my grandfather was the one who requested that song. To this day, when I give lessons, I start people off with chord-heavy songs (typically CCR), and when they're ready to move on to something a little more advanced, we go to The Ventures. Diamond Head is a sure bet that mixes things up well. This music will live on, trust me.
Warwick here: Great and informative analysis of this seminal outfit.....I played guitar in a 90's instrumental trio called The Raouls who supported Link Wray in Oz. Fantastic bloke. I always loved this tune, we played the Walk Don't Run '64 version & covered a couple of others off the Mel Taylor solo lp.
Once again Excellent commentary...I really like all you vids! Your are always right on with your analysis's. And I dig the background and the history you put forth!!! The Ventures inspired many many musicians and guitar players in the 60s and 70s including myself. I learn how to play guitar as a kid listening to those Great riffs!
Fil realizes he's in the presence of greatness. He can't help but chuckle as Nokie tears it up on lead guitar. These guys could outplay everyone in their day. House Of The Rising Sun is a better guitar selection form this concert. They launched a thousand bands. I love The Shadows, but The Ventures never fail to get the party swinging!
I remember sweating to this song as a teenager while dancing. It was always played at the teen club I hung out at on Friday and Saturday nights, Quite a blast from the past. Thanks Fil!!!
I've still got a few of their albums. Pipeline was the first one of theirs that I learned how to play. It's amazing how many songs use the same chord progression.
Pipeline was the first song I learned to play also. I got a learn how to play album by the Safaris, and learned it after about a month. I had a Gibson SG Jr and a Gibson 30 Watt tube amp w/reverb.
Very cool group. I believe my brother took up playing guitar because of them. He never joined a band but still plays now into his 70s. He even makes guitars! I love the Ventures too, especially their Christmas album.
Well that was fun. There's a Japanese band called "M" Ventures that recreated this very concert. Clothing, amp's, guitars and drums all the same. It's good clean fun as well. Check em' out.
God I love your work! These guys are a big part of my music beginnings! I took a lot of flacks for loving them, from some music snobs! Thank you for validating my “Ventures” love Go Mel Go!
As kids when wipe out came on it was a hit... We kids played the opening drum solo on car hood's. .. Every kid gave a solo wipe out... Girls too... Dancing... Right on the street corner under the street lights... A harp or two... Fun time's
Thank you for a very outstanding analysis and presentation of these giants of music. I believe your programs are the best and most informative look at music out there. Please keep up your superior work. Thanks again.
You ought to turn these little chat/analysis videos into a weekly TV program. Have a word with the BBC or ITV. Hell of a lot better than a lot of the crappy programs that are currently on, in some cases 100 times better.
You nailed that. I am almost 71 and I remember this well. Here in Oklahoma it was played at all the dances. Thank you for all the added information. And yes, those guys were really good. I really enjoyed that.
Wow! Excellent analysis! I've loved this tune since I was a child. I remember first hearing this on a family trip to Canada back in the early 70's. Thank you so much for the history lesson.
Excellent video. I love surf music. It seems as if one compiled all of the most famous surf band albums...the Surfaries, Ventures, the Astronauts, the Liveley Ones (
This was great! You are awesome to feature one of the best bands ever. At least from my teen years. I have learned so much more than just listening. Thanks, Fil!
Fil an excellent analysis of both the group & music that was so often played with high school bands as I was growing up but not at this level. You certainly have the eye/ear for great analysis, much appreciated.
I still remember that riff from when I was a kid. The song is memorable to me because one time a band that really didn't know the song played at the bar... some really hot redhead would get everything shakin when the drum solos came in... the band kept going and going with the song and drum solos. I couldn't blame the guys, that gal had it all goin on. I forget her name now, I went to high school with her.
Super review. Spot on. Love that you highlighted their mid-late 60s studio work with stereo, fuzz, etc. Their Super Psychedelics and Guitar Freakout albums are very innovative.
Oh, BOY! Love the Ventures and 'Wipe Out'...(Don't like actually wiping out, though. I left a lot of skin on the hard shallow bottom at "The Wedge".) Of course, now I love it even more! I had no idea about the history of The Ventures or how this song worked. No wonder it's so cool. Thanks a bunch!
Simply the best arrangements you could find back then . They were really big with the Echo Chamber , Reverb and Tremelo Surf Music . Mel Taylor was as good as they get and Nokie had a distinct way he played that set him apart from most others .
very good commentary! I appreciate the interesting historical background points but more so your clear and pointed analysis ..........take it from an old rocker!

Wings of Pegasus - Interesting story you tell about how Bob and Don met. There's another one floating around that says they both worked for the same construction company in the late 50's. Also, that version of Walk, Don't Run they did was apparently based on the Chet Atkins version (although it sounds way different) but they came up with it when the band was hired as the house band for a local TV show. They used it as the theme song for the show and people wrote into the studio wanting copies of that song. That is what prompted them to record it in the first place. You also left a couple of drummers out (including George Babbit, their original drummer, who went on to become a 4 star general in the USAF), but you covered the main guys and Mel Taylor is THE drummer for that band. No doubt about that. His son Leon has taken over drum duties since '96, when Mel Taylor passed away. They were, and still are, a great band and pop music as we know it today wouldn't be quite the same if The Ventures hadn't come along. Lovely video. Thanks for posting it.
There is a video of these guys playing this song live and accompanying their drummer on stage is a young Max Weinberg (E Street Band). The two drummers were having a sort of play off on the drum solos. The band is bit older than this video but it’s a really nice live performance video. You should check it out👍

I'd want to add Carl Wilson of the BeachBoys. Fave BBoy instrumental = "Miserlou" (sp?).
Loved the old instrumentals. Ventures a favorite. Pipeline, Walk don't run, great stuff
Great analysis and historical context! You do very good work and are quite upbeat and cool!
One of the all time favorites, for sure. Thanks Fil, great work on giving the back story as well as the praise they deserve. Ahh...great to be reminded of the golden sixties with treasures like this rare video. Awesome! Like 39, C27, V134. /:-)
A Wipe Out video with Max Weinberg guesting with the Ventures was great to watch . Two drummers beat for beat using 2 different styles.
Always learn so much from your vids! Great, as always! Love The Ventures!!
You are a great presenter with terrific material. You’ve turned this 74-year-old lady into a blues fan. Thanks so much
Thanks!
Well done as always, Phil! Thanks!!
Another great job, Fil. Another great track. I just loaded the Ventures into my streaming que in the truck. Thanks!
Great to see this generation of musicians showing the Ventures some love.
LOVE THE DRUMS IN THIS SONG 💖
The ultimate drummers song of the day!
100,000 bands !!!
Continue to be impressed by your apprecation of excellent music recorded way before your time.
God I love your work!
These guys are a big part of my music beginnings!
I took a lot of flacks for loving them, from some music snobs!
Thank you for validating my “Ventures” love
Go Mel Go!
Identical amps and suits, matching axes, all in a row, all in synch. The Ventures always amaze me, as do You, Dear Fil. Good work! ❤️
Thanks!
I saw them a few months ago. Wow. I think all brand new members. They were also going again to Japan. Great band!!
Love the Ventures! The "Ventures in Space" is one of my all time favorite albums... Very ahead of it's time...
My favorite as well. Great album title as the whole album has that spacey feel to it.
👍 so few people know
That album still listen to it 🕶
You nailed that. I am almost 71 and I remember this well. Here in Oklahoma it was played at all the dances. Thank you for all the added information. And yes, those guys were really good. I really enjoyed that.
The Ventures (through their records) taught me how to play guitar.
Walk Don't Run, Pipeline, Apache, etc...
Good stuff.
The Ventures are what happens when musicians are so good they needn't play ego games. Perfection!
Ouch!
Were you too cool for school
@@jamesgordonakacrazylegs8222 Nope. I was a good little schoolgirl!
I smoked lots and lots of fat doobies with Ron Wilson whenever the Surfaris came to town. Now there was a guy with a few interesting stories. ;)
I saw someone try to surf the wedge with a full sized surfboard. He soon learned his mistake.
Your passion and knowledge of music is delightful. LOVE your UA-cam channel!
Yes, they surf in Japan: Image result for do people surf in Japan
Considered by many to be the best region to surf in Japan, Shikoku Island to the southwest is known for its ideal beach conditions, easy access, and surf communities. Kochi and Tokushima prefectures on the island's southeast coastline boast the best swells, with an average of 20 per season.Feb 18, 2017
Thanks for this a great song and great band from my teen years.
You should check it out👍
Cool shirt! I remember listening to this on 33 1/3 when I was 5
Fil, glad I came across your channel. I love your enthusiasm for the music and the time that you put in on research. I find you technically knowledgeable and entertaining. Great job!!!
