How to Test the Pressure Switch on your Washer - Not Filling or Overfilling with Water

  • In this video I show you how to test the pressure switch on your washer. If you have a washer that is overfilling with water or not filling at all, this could be your issue.
Another thing is if the pressure switch tube is plugged with debris, it could also cause the washer to not fill or overfill. By simply blowing into the hose could clear any obstruction and get your washer back up and running.
This is an Amana washer in the video. This test will work on most washers with a three prong connector on the pressure switch.
Thanks for taking the time to watch this video. If you are not Subscribed to my UA-cam Channel, make sure you do that now.

For those unaware, apparently Bill (Robert William Newberry) died in 2016. I just found his videos myself and was sad to hear it. Just wanted to say something so that you will understand why he isn't replying to your questions. He left a nice legacy for us. Fair Winds and Following Seas, Marine! Semper Fidelis Brother!

Bill thank you for this excellent video. It's 2023 and my 2006 Whirlpool top loader overflowed on me. Happened with the load size set to "Super" and it seemed that the fill level was too high (but not overflowing) even when set to Ex Small. After watching your video, I took the path of least resistance, and blew through the pressure sensing hose. It was definitely clogged, and everything is working good again. Less than 10 min effort. Much appreciated!!!

You rock, Bill. Mine shows 23 ohms regardless of how much pressure is applied ( the diaphragm can be heard clicking). Pins 1 and 2 show open in both states. This after LG support ASSURED me that only filling 3" of water with a full load was normal. Thank you... New switch on the way!

    Great video Bill! Thanks.
If the washer isn't filling and the pressure switch is fine and the washer valve/solenoid checks out as well, there is a fuse on some models between the pressure switch and the controller which may be the problem. Replace it with a 4amp quick blow fuse.

Thanks for your clear explanation. My machine was not filling with water & when I opened up the washing machine i found the pressure switch hose was kinked just before it attaches to the pressure switch so i simply cut it back to below the kink (about 30mm) reattached it, hooked up the water inlet hose, plugged in the power cord & its working very well. Thank you. Ohh & my Simpson Genesis 524 is almost 20 years old.

Thanks Billy. Im from Sri Lanka. My washing machine was over filling and found no air coming from the small component connected to the main drum. I removed the air tube and blew it until the the bubbles come from the spinning drum as u said and now its working fine. Thanks once again for the valuable information.

Thanks so much for posting this video. My pressure switch tested closed circuit when there was no pressure to it and it never changed. Thanks to the testing technique I was able to open the pressure switch and fix the contact where it was stuck in the closed position. It was tedious putting the switch back together the tiny spring popped out. My washer is working fine now! If you plan on buying a new switch give it a go. I do have basic knowledge of electronics.

So my washer kept filling up and would over flow thanks to your 2 videos its fixed!!!!! Our GE washer would not go into spin cycle properly, and would refill the tub and wash the clothes again. We had a washer repairman over a few days ago, and he changed out the 'shock absorbers' that support the tub, but it did not help. Now he thinks it may be the pressure switch. After watching your video with your explanation, I think that was the problem all along. I'm sure it did not hurt to change the other parts out on a 6 year old washer, but who knows. :(

Hi Bill, I should buy you a beer, or tickets to the game! My relatively new, but out of warranty, LG front loader suddenly started over-filling, then failing with a water Inlet Error. After watching your video, I removed the top cover and the first thing I spotted was the tube had slipped off the pressure switch. You have saved me a small fortune in repair bills. You're a star, keep up the good work. I'm going to tell all my friends about your channel.

Dude! Totally helped me find and solve the problem with a Maytag washing machine that had been stored in a garage for two years. Turned out mice had built a nest in the top compartment where the controls/wiring are and had chewed a hole in that pressure tube. I was able to patch it and it’s working as well as I remember. Tested the action on the pressure switch with a multimeter just to make sure it was working while I was in there and your instructions were spot on. Thank you so much for this clear and helpful video!

Clearest videos I've seen.I saw your other video too( water inlet valve). Is this broadly similar on an overfilling front loader? Also (on a front loader) if you unplug on fill and it continues to fill likely it is the pressure switch rather than inlet valve?

another possible issues is if there is a leak in the hose. If there is a crack in the hose, it is usually at the connections points. Either where it connects onto the switch, or where it connects on the tub.

Thank you for you trouble shooting videos. I was able to troubleshoot my Maytag LAT8704AAE washer that suddenly stopped filling. First UA-cam video said it was the water control valve, so I ordered it. Then I found your troubleshooting videos on the water control valve and the pressure switch. Checked the WCV it tested good. Proceeded step by step testing the PS (after I finally learned to open my machine) was confused everything tested good, even the “blow” test on the tube, but plugged the washed in a tested and it started filling. As it filled I noticed something white with a blue stripe floating in the water. Appears that a piece of Teflon tape was clogging the PS and the blow rest dislodged it.
Thank you, I cancelled the $90 part at this time, but I probably need in the future as we purchased the machine in 1994.

Hi mate, i have a problem. I have a front loading zanussi fls-571c thats running on a manual timer control. The problem is it spins, it rinses. But it doesn't wash. After filling up water, the water stops and the timer clicks but no washing starts and no voltage on the capacitor either that starts the motor but voltage present during rinse and spin about 400V plus. After the rinse or spin completes, the capacitor voltage drops to zero instantly. Could that be a capacitor fault? Or something else? Please help.

I have a question I am so hoping you can help me with. Commercial top load older Speed Queen washer. It will, with no rhyme or reason dump gallons of water on to the floor. Clothes are completely spun out, pump has been replaced, not coming from drain back-up, hoses all good. Works beautifully most times, but every so often does this " dump the water trick"
happens. There will be water in the cabinet and its hard telling where it came from. Pressure switch is working fine.
Wondering if this could be the solenoid occasionally getting stuck. If so, is there anyway to test?
I love this machine, but I'm loosing sleep over it!

I don't normally make online comments but it would be shameful of me not to thank you. I have spent countless hours downloading manuals and watching videos and replacing parts and was ready to give up and buy a new washing machine and then I watched your video. I had it narrowed down to an obstruction in the pressure chamber but saw that it was fused to the tub and had no idea how to get to it to clear it. Blew through the hose a few times as you suggested in your video and I could hear it clearing and there was a very foul smelling odor. Running a load of wash right now and it made it to the rinse cycle :)
    Can't thank you enough!

Excellent video. Good explanation. I'm sure that if the hose is broken or has a leak, the air pressure will never reach the sensor.....I think that should be mentioned as well showing how to test the hose for air leaks. Thanks for this videos. Good work.

Accidentally left the selector switch on low water level but wanted the higher water level. Switching to the higher level continues on low and does not switch. How do I fix it so it will go to high?

MY 1995 Whirlpool water level diaphragm switch tested bad because when empty, contacts V & P showed about 3 ohms resistance instead of zero and sometimes would over fill the tub onto the floor! I FIXED IT by spraying electronics contacts cleaner into around the plunger/spring area and lightly blowing in and out on the hose to get the switch to click on and off then waited for the spray to evaporate and now it reads Zero ohms and no longer over fills!
Good luck! Avoid buying a new one!

Thank you. I was just about it replace my inlet valve when found your video. My lg was giving a inlet error. I checked the solonids with a multimeter as described in other videos and they were all giving no signal. then watched your video and looked over at the pressure valve and spotted the pipe was completely popped off the unit. pushed back on and working fine with no errors. Still not sure why I got no reading from the solonids on the water inlet though. works fine now so I don't care lol

So when you blow air, you connecet the two outside terminal and it shows continuity. This means the water valve gets shut off.
Open reading between two terminals means the water valve is open.
My Lg shows continuity between the outside terminals. When I blow air into the tube. Nothing happens, absolutely nothing happens with any terminals. I have 6 of these switches. They all do the same thing. It is hard to believe that all 6 are bad. Crazy as fuck.

    Hi Bill,
    Great video!
Is this the same for a front load washing machine?

I have a whirlpool wtw57esvw1 and I pooped top like you did and hooked little hose to sensor and didn’t hear a click. What should I do next? I don’t know how to remove case of washer. Hose looks like new. Not hard or dirty. Any help would be great. My agitator comes on immediately and fills with water. Filled almost to top

When a washer with a similar pressure switch underfills (by design, to keep the water stored in reservoirs from ending up in water reclamation plants) to the degree that the washer can't really wash, would using a longer hose fix the problem?

Hi Bill, thanks for your video's, they're very informative. I'm having a problem with the cold fill on my old Kenmore. I turn it on and I'm barely getting any cold water fill. I replaced the hot/cold solenoid / valves, but it's still doing the same thing. It fills with the hot water though with no problem. My question is, if the problem was the pressure switch, wouldn't it be happening with both the hot and the cold?

Following up on my comment earlier on overfilling it was the water pressure switch. Video seems spot on.BUT part is obsolete so I replaced my blue switch on my bendix with an identical brown part off late father's older! Hoover? machine.(All numbers on switches same) Now works ok BUT... underfills!! My question are these parts interchangeable? Only other thing I did was shorten the hose by an inch for other reasons Trying to work out why it's registering too much pressure? Machine works brilliant now otherwise? Any ideas anyone?

Greetings from Greece. My washing machine (an old Candy model) fills with water, a few minutes after the washing is completed, although I shut it off, unplug it and turn the water supply off. What do you think about it? How can I fix it?

Hey Bill, I have a question. Samsung front washer. The original problem was that the washer was full of foreign substances such as sand, so the drain did not work. After cleaning, I changed the drain pump and now the drain works well. However, a little bit of foreign matter still comes out. The problem is that the drain continues without stopping and doesn't go on to the next cycle. However, in test mode it works fine. Advice please.

I'm watching the video a second time to review the readings you're getting. I'm assuming the washer is unplugged and the tests your running is for continuity, correct? I'm assuming this because the electrical plate is behind/above the washer and it's not plugged into it. Just a suggestion, and I think you made a point of this in an earlier video from the series, I believe you should make a point in each video of telling the viewer to unplug the washer. Someone with relatively no repair experience may not realize you are testing for continuity, with the washer unplugged. I very well may be wrong though....

I have a Maytag washer model # LAT9593AAW that is blowing the fuse in the control panel. I replaced the the timer assembly and it is still doing it. I have continuity between the the hot and neutral terminals that plug into the wall outlet whenever the machine is in operation mode no matter what part of the cycle I’m dialed into except for the OFF position. When I remove one of wires from the water pressure switch part # 2073612 or if I blow into the pressure switch I no longer have continuity. Do you think I should replace the pressure switch
