  • An interesting twist on a classic or a shameless cash grab? Let's see what difference a year (and a bit of sherry) can make.
Also take a look at JeffWhisky's review of the American Rye Cask Version:

Great review. I stayed away from CR in general for probably too long, then I picked this and the 12 up on offer and I was very pleasantly surprised. That said, I'd only ever buy them on offer. Cheers.

Thanks Al. I agree CR12 had more to offer than you might expect. But yes the special offers are really needed to seal the deal 😉 Cheers

Ah dude, cheers for the mention I was looking forward to seeing how this compared to the banging rye cask. I have heard mixed things about the tequila finish but as you said it has the higher price tag when the standard 12 does the job. Cheers!

No problem buddy! Give it a few years and between us we'll probably get through the entire range 🤣 the 12 is hard to beat for value though. Cheers 🥃

Interesting and informative review🙂 There are some surprisingly nice finds in some of the "tinkered with" cheap blended scotch. We have have good experiences with Famous Grouses Port and red wine casks. Still, I feel much like you, there is definitely a limit to how many of these bottles I care to drink😉

Thanks guys. There's certainly lots of blend options out there for those who choose to seek them out. I didn't even know the Grouse port and red wine editions existed but I had a bourbon cask Grouse blend that was dirt cheap and FAR better than the standard. I didn't review it purely because it seems to be unavailable now but the label lives on on my pinboard.
But yes, there comes a time when you want to go back to good old single malt 😉

Just popped open the tequila cask that the mrs got me for our 13 anniversary, lovely dram very pineapple fruit flavours
Very impressed, looking to pick up the rye when I see it as I'm partial to a rye lately

Congratulations Mick. Glad you're enjoying the Tequila version. Perhaps I'll give it a go next time I'm in the market for a blend. Cheers 🥃

Great review and well analysed. A 13 year old whisky with some sherry in the equation should raise some questions. The most obvious one is the standard of those good old casks. My guess is they probably had some sherry involvement some time ago. It could be regular stuff with a sherry splash at the end but either way they must have added colour to disguise what's going on. Chivas jumping on the sherry wagon with no price to back it up. Standard corporate behaviour. WT

Thanks WT. My money would be on the sherry splash at the end but hard to say. It does something... but nothing to sing and dance about!

I agree with having some blended offerings on hand as one cannot keep downing pours of expensive stuff regularly anymore. Chivas has been a staple around the party scenes and there is nothing wrong with that.

Yeah we're all feeling the pinch! So it's nice that some of the cheap stuff is good as well as affordable.

Take this if you need extra mentally stability from no sleep no power and from getting silver, it can help you with that extra strength

I got this one on March... yeah, a meh one 😶. I wonder if the 18 will get you more. I remember having it 10 yrs ago and I really loved it (bc of its "smooth" characteristic) when I wasn't aware of how different single malts are.
Now because of the extra $$ I am obligated to revisit cheaper options like upscale blends 🤷‍♂️

      @WhiskyLock  Рік тому

I've always been tempted by the 18. But always put off by the low ABV. Must be said that it's much cheaper than any 18yo single malt though.

@@WhiskyLock we need to get the south African version. They get spoiled with 43% ABV

@@WhskAZCL ahh that sounds great. That, Highland Park 12 and Laphroaig 10 are whiskies that I feel could be so much better at 43%. But near impossible for Brits to get hold of...

Its just a bit of meh blend sure there's sherry and some fruit and sweetness but its tamed down. I used it for cocktails and mixing in the end.
