Great to see Arran's The Bodega Sherry Cask make the list. Agreed not as heavily sherried as the others but the balance is so good, it's just a fantastic scotch with the right amount of sherry. A very heavy sherry bomb but from an IB is the 13 year Strathmill CS from Signatory!! Outta this world!
I do like my sherried scotch. Was eyeing up the A'Bunadh batch 60 having never sampled Aberlour, but ended up picking up Balvenie CC instead. It sits well with my Oban 14.
My favourite Sherry casked scotches are Abelour A’bunahd and I have had a couple bottles of Lagavulin 16 Year Destillers Edition that were Sherry Casked and quite enjoyable.
My Favorite Sherry bomb would be the Glenalliche 12 and peated sherry be the Kilchomen Sainag. Both unreal whiskeys I always repurchase. I want to try the Loch Gorm but haven't been able to find it here in Canada where I'm at
I’m halfway through a bottle of Senaig, and the sherry influence is dominated by smoke to me… not sure if I’d be able to even spot the sherry influence in a blind taste!
Arran performs so constantly on a high level, gotta love Arran. But my fav sherry bomb is The Ultimate Edradour 2013 Cask Strength! And yeah, I also have a very high level Glenallachie 10 yo CS in my whiskycabinet.
Working my way through an Aberlour A'Bunadh right now... Had a couple of bottles over the years... Its great but becoming a bit sweet for me as my journey continues...
Glenfarclas 105 is pretty good. It’s been my weekend dram for the last month and it doesn’t ever disappoint. Cask strengths are nice too because of the depths discovered with added water.
I started with the Batch #16 Aberlour A'Bunadh and still going strong into the 70s. This whisky is what I call candy water, you can drink touch to fast. Just Yummy
Fellow Kiwi here and a sherry bomb aficionado, and while tastes are subjective i would strongly suggest that the Kavalan Solist should be top of this list, theres nothing like it that i have tried, the intensity is 2nd to none.
Edradour 12 CS is excellent sherry bomb but it has a distinctive “dirty” character so it may not please some of the public. It has that weird machine oil notes mixed with heavily cooked plums made into a jam. One of the best whiskies I ever had, I regret not getting a second bottle as it’s completely sold out atm. If anyone come across a bottle - do not hesitate, it’s a treasure. edit: I’m referring to the one bottled in ibisco decanter, it was single cask as well.
Loch Gorum is one of my very favorite single malts and it is impressive that Kilchoman as a young distillery is putting out product to rival Lagavulin and Ardbeg. Great video, Phil. I have yet to get my hands on the Tamdhu but I'll keep trying to get it. I'm sure I will like it.
for me to be honest, to rival ardbeg atm is not really a challange since their newer cask managment of selling the standing in the corner casks that dont hit the quality mark, (but then want the same or more money as before) is a sad choice.
@@DayKlight…I’ve had 2022 bottlings of the 10, Corryvreckan and Uigeadail. All still very good. I think it’s the overpriced special releases where they fail.
I agree with you on how good Cardrona Growing Wings is! I was in New Zealand for work earlier this year and tried it at a bar in Auckland and was blown away by it. Was able to get my hands on a bottle, but mine is the Growing Wings 5yr Cask Strength Olorosso Sherry & Bourbon 65.5% edition. I will be opening it soon and going to do some blinds with it for my whiskey nights to see how it stacks up.
The Kavalan sherry cask is amazing. My favorite whiskey I’ve ever tried actually. But yeah, expensive and impossible to find in the US. Aberlour A’bunadh is my next favorite and is also really great.
good review , you are actually showing the regions which are very close to each other macallan is addressed as being in moray aberlour . [ easter elchies , craigellachie ],
Kavalan makes some fantastic whisky in general, but their sherry cask whiskies are especially great. In ascending order of pricing: Triple Sherry Cask, Oloroso Sherry, Solist Oloroso Single Cask Strength, Solist Amontillado Single Cask Strength, Solist Manzanilla Single Cask Strength, Solist PX Single Cask Strength, & Solist Moscatel Single Cask Strength. I hear prices are pretty crazy around the world for many of these, but here in Taiwan they're quite affordable. For the quality level, the Triple Sherry & basic Oloroso Sherry are pretty inexpensive everywhere. My favorite is the Solist Oloroso Single Cask Strength. All are pretty huge sherry bombs.
Very nice Video. I like sherry whiskies. I just had a dram of an independent bottler that would be on the fare right top corner of your diagram. It’s the most heavily sherried that I had so fare. It’s the “Blossoming Auld Sherried Michel Couvreur”. It’s not my favorite, but it’s so special… A really interesting Dram. One of my favourite wherry whisky is :”Blair Athol 2006 14 Year Old Adelphi RAF Benevolent Fund” (alredy my second bottle 😛). I agree that the Arran Sherry Cask and Aberlour A`bunadh are solid whiskies.
I turned my bourbon loving friend on to scotch with Aberlour. Even the standard 12yr is good stuff. You list is all good. I'd be happy to have a dram of any of them.
Cooper's Choice - Smoking Sherry (Caol Ila), is a really interesting one, although limited in numbers of bottles so maybe hard to get. Very hot, very smokey, you will think of smoke and fire. I add water to cool it off and then I can taste the sherry flavor we're used to: raisins, figs, fruits, some chocolate, etc. Very rich and oily.
Clearly the edradour 12 year cask strength hands down, motor oil natural color and so much mouth watering richness. One of my favorite distilleries. Glendronach has to be the 18 or 21 year, heaven in a glass
I enjoyed that Phil, the Loch gorm i got into after the 5 drams for different occasions vid. The 105 can be hit and miss so I go to the 15 yr old. Of late done the Glenallachie 10 cask strength, Glengoyne c/s, Bunnahabhain 12 c/s, but when Christmas calls what beats a Glendronach 15. ( had both and love both ).
Clynelish 14 has a nice lick of sherry cask but for me has gone from shelf essential to optional good mid ranger the last year. Is it declining quality or that I'm increasingly gravitating to bourbon cask malts like Balblair and Deanston, I'm not sure
My favorite Sherry Bomb whisky is the Aberlour A'bunadh, but I've actually been grabbing my bottle of Tamdhu Batch 5 a lot lately. My newest sherry-bomb favorite is the Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2021. The Kavalan Solist expressions haven't wowed me for the price. I've only tried their Port and Ex-Bourbon casks, but I'm not shelling out the cash for their Sherry version at this point. Another great video, Phil. Cheers!
Thanks, Kevin! Yeah, I haven't loved the Kavalan whiskies - especially at the price point they are asking. Big fan of Tamdhu Batch 5. Loch Gorm is also an excellent choice; they know how to blend the sherry and smoky notes without either flavour dominating.
Wow! Surprised to hear Kavalan isn't a winner for you guys. Have you tried the Vinho Barrique? It's my favorite expression from Kavalan. Won tons of awards. Not cheap.
As always thank you Phil, great video, great information very well presented. My favorite so far are the GlenAllachie 10yo and the A’bunadh. I’ll will be looking forward to finding the other choices, especially the Tamdhu one. Cheers from Montreal.
Bowmore 17/18 heavy on the sherry and light on the smoke, especially for an Islay. Used to be very affordable for the age statement, but it's over 100 USD nowadays in the States.
Solid list Phil of some great drams. Personally I'm not a big sherry bomb lover and often find them a little sulphur forward. For me I like Dalmore 12 (to my shame) and the Atom Labs &whisky Christmas cake... For my sherry fix.
If you want an extreme sherry bomb, there's Teerenpeli Kaski, aged for it's entire life exclusively in an ex-Pedro Ximenez casks, it's just mind-blowing. Even tho it's not a cask strength, you won't be disappointed. Not a big fan of Oloroso sherry, so 105, Glendronach batch 9, Tomatin Sherry CS didn't do much for me. With only exception Kavalan Solist. Anything I tried from them, even very basics, blew my mind away. IMHO Scotland could learn some tips from them on how to make awesome whiskey ))) Apart from Islay, these guys are doing great! ))
The Glenfarclas Family Cask line has some amazing sherry bombs. Glendronach Cask Strength line is good too. Sherry bombs are nice but imo the best drinking, most quaffable drams are from refill, 3rd fill, and 4th fill sherry casks. 4th fills are exceedingly rare but they’re just divine.
Great video Phil I am not into cask strength whiskeys but I love Glenfarglas and I love Aberlour so glad the Glenfarglas 105 and the Aberlour abuna made your list Personally I am into sweet whisky and I tend not to like higher then about %46 ABV but Glenfarglas 12 and Aberlour 12 and 14 are 2 of my regular seen whisky in my whisky Cupboard!
My favorite is Macallan 18, distilled in 1972, bottled in 1990. The old Macallan bottlings are the quintessential Sherry Bombs. One could argue that Macallan led the Sherry Bomb wave from back in the 80’s & 90’s. Today, Macallan has gotten full of itself. Their casks aren’t what they were back in the 20th century. And the price points today are simply obscene. I was surprised that no mention of Macallan appeared in the video review or in the threads I’ve seen. In the mid-1980s there was no equal to this venerable old Speyside Distillery.
Jura Superstition this high on sherry/fruit? I've had a bottle and it's a very characterful malt, however full on smoked corn porridge and some caramel. I understand it has refill-sherry, however it's at its maximum middle of the road, if not at the bottom with bourbon-style whiskies.
if you can try the edradour, imagine the caledonia, but more sirupy texture more oily, intenser flavours but still tasting a malt note, how you still have a great matly note in a such heavy intense sherry buffles me, amazing whisky, cant say much about their batch variation, the one I got is amazing. To me personally, Edradour and Kavalan play in a different sherry league then aaalot of other distilleries/bottles.
Despite owning two Glengoyne Cask Strengths (Batch 8 and 10) I did not know that it was a sherry bomb. As for the Glenfarclas 105 I am saddened to hear about it being erratic but despite that I went for it when it went on sale the other day for half the price of the A'bunadh ($73 Canadian). Now I hear that the A'bunadh is not like it used to be though I am lucky enough to own a bottle of batch 47 or 49 (I can't remember).
Another great video Phil! This year's Campbeltown Festival release from Glen Scotia is cracking. Quite young at 8 years, but PX finished and peated. Absolutely lovely.
Hey boss, there are a lot of scotches missing from your chart. Macallan rare cask, estate, the travelers series, the older Dalmores, most of the glenmorangies, the higher end Johnnie Walkers. Need more luxury bottles on the chart
Got to say one of my favourite sherry bombs is the GlenAllachie 15yo, you mentioned the 10yo in the video which I haven't tried. but the 15 is so smooth for being 46%
Hi Phil, I actually prefer an ex bourbon cask matured whisky but Glendronach 18, a’bunadh, the núderra and Glen Allachie 10 CS batch 3 are all good sherry bombs. As always Phil a good thought though and presented video, 👍, slàinte.
I love that diagram, really helpful, I kinda thought the ledaig 10 would be more to the left though. The Glenfarclas 105 cask strength is what I would consider the biggest sherry bomb I've had before. Love that bottle. You get so much bang for the buck too. Also got an unopened glendronach cs batch 10 (almost ordered the 9 before, pew lucky ;)
Hey Hans, I love the diagram too, I agree though, a few of the whisky placements that have been put on to it seem a bit dubious. Nice! Enjoy the Glendronach CS! Good work ordering the 10 👍😅
for sure, Ledaig10 to the left, close to Caol ila12, and Talisker10 to the right, instead of Ledaig10. Also Lag16 is more peated vs Ledaig10-Caol ila12. Blacklable is nearly zero peated, just a little.
Love your videos phil. Very informative and well researched. Im visiting arran next month, gunna book myself in for a tasting session and will probably treat myself to an arran 18, their best whisky in my opinion
Pretty interesting list. Love the Tamdhu, The A’bunadh and the 105. Also love Uigidel, Loch Gorm but then peat is way more my thing than sherry. The Arran was forgettable, Kavalan unforgettable but not necessarily in a great way and Kilkerran 8 was fine but not special. I’d like to try the Ebradour since it’s mentioned a lot. Love the diagram, very much disagree with the guy who thinks it’s incorrect.
I have the Glendronach Batch 7... trust me, it's bad. Not a good way to start Rachel Barrie. Young, sharp, tannins galore. On the other hand I've tried the GlenAllachie Batch 6 and Aberlour A'bunadh Batch 69, but scrumptious. Glengoyne Batch 008 isn't bad either. And the Kavalan Solist is also excellent. Still to try, Glenfarclas 105 and Arran Sherry Cask. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Hey Phil, you have an awesome channel, subscribed! In regards to Sherry casks, are they always charred before being filled? Are some Sherry casks just emptied out and used as is?
I live in Taiwan and their entry level bottles are quite affordable for the quality. Their rarer high end Solist bottles can be pricey, but based on quality I think they're pretty reasonable here if you know where to shop. Their prices are insane around the world though.
Great video mate - this is the first video of yours I've seen so I've subscribed. I would reallly like a copy of that diagram you showed about the flavour profiles of different whiskies - is there any chance I could have one? Even for a price mate?
Great list, man. I'm also somewhat underwhelmed with the Glenfarclas. Sad to see the Glenallachie 10 become so hyped up these days. Aberlour... not what it used to be but still a classic. Sort of. 😉🥃
Agree with all of that. I feel like Aberlour isn’t as rich or something. Dunno. I’m yet to try the Glenallachie 10. Hopefully when everyone stops stocking, I might get a bottle😅. 👍🥃
How much water would you guys add to a 30ml dram of aberlour, on an average day? I’m down to half a bottle #69, my first, and I can’t find the ‘sweet spot’ Cheers
@@FirstPhilWhisky the aberlour is a sad shadow of its original batches, in older batches there were casks up to 25 years old in it, all european oak matured, now it became alot thiner and younger version of it
My favorite sherry bomb(s). Kilkerran 8 Cask strength, Glengoyne Tea Pot Dram, and kind of cheating because it's not an official release but the Adelphi Ben Nevis 5 yo (this might be #1). Phil I'll be visiting family in NZ later this year, Auckland to Wellington and then to Queenstown. Any whisky destinations you'd recommend? Was thinking Cardrona while in Queenstown? Thanks in advance!!!
I wish I could get Kilkerren 8 here in NZ.😢. Fantastic. There isn't a lot. Cardrona is probably the best as destination. Waiheke whisky is great, but the distillery is still in the works. But you can try their whisky at the Heke on Waiheke island. It's a beautiful island with many vineyards too - if you're into wine.
I hope the chart was not made by you, there are some misplacements in my view. Another great video as usual! Might be better to make a list of top ten so as not upset some fans. lol. Thanks Phil.
Shame you don't have the Edradour 12 as for me that is the ultimate (currently available) cask strength sherry bomb. Otherwise the 10 at 46% is a no brainer. The Abunadh sems to be less sherry with every new batch, but was amazing and is still great value. Otherwise I have a few older Glen Dronach 18s stashed, those are pure nectar. Must remind myself of the Arran Sherry, been a while since I had one.
yes, old abunadh had up to 20-25 year old sherry casks in there, mixed with some younger ones, all matured in finest european oak butts, now its young sherry casks mixed together :(
In 2014 I had an Abunadh batch 45: it blew my mind, amazing flavour, but the newer stuff doesn’t seem to be the same quality. Such a shame, but there’s other stuff to discover.
the Glenlivit 13 Cask stranth Sherry Cask is really good aswell, the Kavalan whiskey is also expensive aswell, here in Taiwan many people also choose NOT to drink our own Kavalan whiskey, price is just too high
Hm, I guess pricing is relative. I live in Taiwan and think that based on quality level, most Kavalan is quite affordable here, especially their lower end products.
This bottle looks incredible. But it’s over double the price than any of these in my market. Hopefully it’s a little cheaper for people in different markets
This video is the best way to start a day after a looooong shift (it's morning here in Argentina)! Great upload Phil
Cheers Nicolás! Glad my video can help after a long shift like that!
Great video! I love sherry bombs, but admittedly the only cask strength bottle I have is the Aberlour. Thanks for the ideas of others to try.
My favourite Sherry casked scotches are Abelour A’bunahd and I have had a couple bottles of Lagavulin 16 Year Destillers Edition that were Sherry Casked and quite enjoyable.
I can't go past the Tamdhu Batch Strength its just scrumptious and incredibly rounded not spikey at all. Great vid as usual mate
Agree. Cheers Dan!

I've got a bottle of that that I'm very excited to open!
Glenallachie 15 is fantastic!!
Hey boss, there are a lot of scotches missing from your chart. Macallan rare cask, estate, the travelers series, the older Dalmores, most of the glenmorangies, the higher end Johnnie Walkers. Need more luxury bottles on the chart
Got to say one of my favourite sherry bombs is the GlenAllachie 15yo, you mentioned the 10yo in the video which I haven't tried. but the 15 is so smooth for being 46%
So good! I need to get a bottle of the 15
smoky sherre bombs are my favorite whiskies!!!!
Uegeadail and Sanaig for the win!!!!
Hello! First thank you for all this ... I really hope u are blessed.
Can u let the Diagram too us download?
Where would you put Laphroaig PX? Top left?
Best sherry bomb is Kilkerran 8yo sherry cask (any batch). Hard to buy, but worth every minute of searching and every cent of price.
Ah wish I could find one! Heard so many good things!
is aberlour 12 non-chill a good whiskey to get to know sherry?
If you can get hold of it in NZ check out The Lakes Whiskymaker's Reserve No.5 you won’t regret it.
Thanks Chris! Love the Arran 18. My fav of the line-up. Have fun!
I love Smokehead Sherry Bomb
Glen Garioch 15 was and always has been the no 1 sherry cask strength. I can't understand how it's not in here. :)
Hey Hannes, that’s a great bottle. Can be hard to find though for some.
I was recommended it, and bought two, but I must say that it is extremely new-makey, almost tequilaish....;- /
Excellent list my friend, cheers!
Nice selection. Like the editing as well. Cheers
I cant see my favourite Glen Scotia Sherry Double Cask Finish LE...
But Tamdhu (may be) a little bit better, I agree! ;)
Oh I should try that!
Do you have your the graft on the whiskies available for download ? Thank you and cheers.
No worries. I've now added a link in the description.
That Edradour is 👌
How have i missed your channel for so long , superb content , very well presented ..I'm converted !!...Thanks
Great to have you here Allan! Cheers!
Glenfarclas 105. Can be great but also so,so. Huge batch variations.
Agree
I have the Glendronach Batch 7... trust me, it's bad. Not a good way to start Rachel Barrie. Young, sharp, tannins galore.
On the other hand I've tried the GlenAllachie Batch 6 and Aberlour A'bunadh Batch 69, but scrumptious. Glengoyne Batch 008 isn't bad either. And the Kavalan Solist is also excellent.
Still to try, Glenfarclas 105 and Arran Sherry Cask.
Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
How do I find the chart for Scotch brands: peaty vs. non-peaty/oak vs fruity?
My fav is number 1, that is one heck of a sherry BOMB😋😋
Im surprised Kavalan soloist made the recommendation, but not their triple sherry cask
Edradour Caledonia! probably the most Taste-per-£ I've had in my mouth for a long time. By far. If you haven't tasted yet you simply have to.
Yum! Wish I could find it!
It would seem that the GF 105 has seen some poor recent batches ...say's Gwhiskey ... I've got old ones that are superb ..watch out.
I was hoping to see Tamnavulin
Hey Phil, you have an awesome channel, subscribed! In regards to Sherry casks, are they always charred before being filled? Are some Sherry casks just emptied out and used as is?
Mate Kavalan is expensive in Taiwan too............I know I been there LOL
I live in Taiwan and their entry level bottles are quite affordable for the quality. Their rarer high end Solist bottles can be pricey, but based on quality I think they're pretty reasonable here if you know where to shop. Their prices are insane around the world though.
@@RedRoverTW you are not wrong there
where can I get a copy of the diagram you referred to in the beginning of this episode
You can find it on google by searching ‘Malt Map’. There’s a good one one r/scotch on reddit too
@@FirstPhilWhisky Thank you Your videos are excellent
Great video mate - this is the first video of yours I've seen so I've subscribed. I would reallly like a copy of that diagram you showed about the flavour profiles of different whiskies - is there any chance I could have one? Even for a price mate?
Thanks mate! I've added the link to it in the description.
I’m down to half a bottle #69, my first, and I can’t find the ‘sweet spot’
Cheers
@@FirstPhilWhisky the aberlour is a sad shadow of its original batches, in older batches there were casks up to 25 years old in it, all european oak matured, now it became alot thiner and younger version of it
So many new whiskeys o try, what are you doing to me man? 😅😅😅 I love sherry cask whiskeys!
😅😅😂
You should review celebrity whisky.
How come Bunnahabien is on the peaty side on this map?
Fascinating. Yeah I wish I could get it for a good price
Hm, I guess pricing is relative. I live in Taiwan and think that based on quality level, most Kavalan is quite affordable here, especially their lower end products.
I wonder why the Balvenie 15y Single Barrel Sherry Cask is not mentioned.
This bottle looks incredible. But it’s over double the price than any of these in my market. Hopefully it’s a little cheaper for people in different markets
