Whisky Reviews, News and Info from Great Britain.
From common every day drams to the exotic and the obscure. Focused on Scotch but also dabbling in Bourbon, English, Japanese, Gin and worldwide spirits.
The Whisky Lo[ch] was the name given to the enormous surplus of stock resulting from poor sales of Scotch Whisky in the 1980s when many distilleries including the prestigious Brora were mothballed. The Whisky Loch was a terrible time for all but sounds like a delightful place for a swim!

English Whisky Company Triple Distilled Chapter 17 - Whisky Review 192
Late to this party. I picked up a bottle on auction for £60 (£70 once fees included) a couple of months ago. That tells a story right there... For that price, and perhaps controversially, I genuinely think it's worth it. This is a tasty whisky that hits my preferred bourbon cask profile really well. Like you, somewhat annoyed at reaching this conclusion, but if whisky is tasty and decent value, I'm happy to let the flippers make a loss on the RRP and shell out my own money!
Excellent result. I would buy this again for £70 which is really the correct price. Enjoy 👍🥃
The mash bill contains 75/13/12 % corn/rye/barley. Actually it's a high-corn bourbon
Sadly for me, I still prefer the 10. I think the 12 is harsher and less malty.
Love the old 10. Really dislike the modern branding of the box which seems to trivialize the product and focus on different target customer. Haven't tried the new 10 or 12 but the price has gone up so all together not a great development from what I'm noticing. Considering some trusted reviews saying something is lost in the rebrand product vs the old 10 this is sounding like a marketing disaster in the making.
Well that did it, I had to go out today and pick up two backup bottles of the original old label 10 for the bunker.
Bells blended whiskey is crap tastes terrible 😝
Yes, the whisky did look a bit cloudy to me compared to others which look very clear and bright. I remember nearly 20 years ago when I was doing a certificate in winemaking, we were discussing the use of cork and how the quality of cork available was decreasing as all the good cork trees were being used up. This was resulting in lesser quality cork being harvested and more cork tainted wines. We were questioning whether corks would need to be replaced by something else in the future and if so, by what. At the time we were discussing screw tops as an alternative, but people weren't sure because of the whole thing about opening a wine (or whisky) by popping the cork which would be lost by using a screw top. Now, synthetic corks may be a good alternative as long as they don't leach chemicals into the whisky or wine. Cheers!
Excellent info Simonne. And I feel like this may explain my recent experiences. Two options I'd like to see become common in Scotch are the moulded plastic screw tops that the Japanese have been using for a while and the synthetic corks used for velier rum and Botanist gin. Both seem incredibly reliable and effective. As you say though, what will happen to these new materials after several years? What about 100 years? I don't know and because it's unknown territory I'm a little concerned that perhaps nobody does... Cheers 🥃
Visited the distillery a couple of times on the free tour days. The whisky is OK but it's not competitively priced. Was looking at buying one of the single casks or 14 year old but you can get such better value like an 18 year old from a different distillery or a really good indi bottling.
Tough one. All English distilleries are very small scale compared to most Scottish, Irish and American distilleries. Not all costs scale though so English distilleries are almost forced to go for quality over volume. And that's a tough sell when your whisky isn't that old yet (EWC as the oldest English Distillery are moving out of that phase right now IMHO). I tried the 14yo refill single cask CS when I was there last time. I wasn't that impressed, especially for the price which is higher than other red range releases. My favourite EWC releases are often their shertied releases. Both small batch and red range. As well as their peated small batch and red range. IMHO some of their sherried releases are at least as good as the best from the likes of Glenallachie.
My last bottle of Ardbeg Uigedail the cork snapped about 3/4 the way up, leaving barely anything left under the cap part to seal the bottle back up. Annoyingly it was a fairly disappointing bottling as well so not one I’ve reached for a lot. Managed to find a cork from another bottle that was a bit too wide so doesn’t fit flush to the top of the neck, but makes a good seal and does the job.
Another one was the Wire Works small batch, which didn’t snap, thankfully, but had formed to the glass and was a bit of a pain to get out, leaving a thin layer of cork residue permanently bonded to the inside of the neck.
Perhaps not just my bad luck then! I'd love to know why it's happened a lot lately.
Very odd. I've only had corks fuse to the glass on very old bottles. Which your Wire Works obviously wasn't. Thanks for sharing.
I bought both of these bottles last year on offer for a very good price. Honestly, I was very underwhelmed by both of them. Cheers
It's very tough to balance cost, quality and accessibility in an entry level whisky I think. Especially for EWC which is essentially a micro distillery that only does small batch. I was really disappointed when they released these two a few years ago because until then they'd never gone below 46%. After witnessing a lot of non whisky drinkers choke on 46% whisky on tours though, I'm starting to see why they want something like this. I enjoy both of them though. I think the Original is a pleasant fruity little malt and the Smoky is a nice little Lagavulin light. For those who really care about whisky there are always better options across the rest of the range though. Hopefully these didn't put you off EWC completely. Cheers 🥃
🥃😀😀👍
Coming from SA, thanks for the good review!! I smell and taste rum and raisin ice cream!
Great tasting note. Cheers 🥃
haha you guys are nuts. I once took a 4 bottles of the same type of win but costs ranged from $5.00 to $100.00 a bottle. We did tastes tests and had them line them up in order what they thought they cost. Most of the the people that thought they knew wine well got the order backwards and people that new very little about wines had to order correct. Was pretty funny and embarrassing for some. I was entertained :) Rum is the same way. Sure the rot gut rums will taste pretty terrible metallic vs rums that are a little better but soon there is plateau a point of diminishing returns. I could put $80.00 label on a cheaper Appleton estates and a $5.00 label on say expensive Dimera rum and many people will say the cheap one is better just because I put a $80.00 price tag on it.
Price is a sore point for many at the moment. Especially with Scotch and Bourbon where a lot of us are finding that things that used to be affordable are being raised above what we see as value for money. Regarding what you're saying: I think there are great value products at the low price points in most spirits (I'm not a wine drinker really). Example: I've been drinking a Woods Navy Rum recently that I bought for £20 and it's great if you like that style. And I do. Phenomenal value. Nobody is going to confuse it in a blind tasting with a high ester craft rum or a 20yo Scotch though. There are certain flavours which you can't get from the budget bottom shelf. Are they all great in different ways? Absolutely. And it should be acknowledged that good things can be had without overspending. Cheers 🥃
@@WhiskyLock That said I have Hamden 8 on order at two different places Its not common on the shelves and maybe 1 of 10 people working in spirit stores even heard of it unless they were into tiki at some point.
I had this noted as exceptional value after paying £5 more. £5 more for each. No problem with that but maybe that’s why whisky keeps going up. Am I part of the problem? Great review 👍
If you can get it at a fair price then have at it 👍 Cheers 🥃
Great review! Cheers, Shane!
Shackleton was actually Irish, born in Kildare
dont like the repackaging cheapens it to me. looks like a bottle of cheap wine.
It really does look like a wine bottle. And nobody seems to like it either. A swing and a miss from Glenmo.
@@WhiskyLock yip but i may give it a try anyway.liked the ten.haha ah well.
Just confirmed from Ardbeg’s Bill Lumsden himself in Whiskeycast from Nov 3rd. 12 is replacing not accompanying the original 10. He didn’t say exactly but reading between the lines the 12 is a combination of 1st & 2cd fill bourbon only. Said he played around with some sherry but abandoned it quickly.
Thanks for confirming. That's how I understood it too. I would've been surprised if they kept a 10 and a 12 with such similar cask recipes. I don't taste anything like sherry in the new 12 but it does have a bit of a reconditioned / rejuvenated oak flavour to me. So bourbon casks but a bit messed around with. Could be entirely wrong. Although it's significantly different to the old 10 which was also advertised on the box as first and second fill bourbon only.
@ yes your original thought was correct but saw some disputing it in here. I guess we’ll never know the exact cask recipe. Curious if you’ve had the Calvados & Port finish as well from Glenmo? Having a tasting this Sunday & although I haven’t tried them yet the nose is amazing on both even out of the bottle.
@BourbonJazzyLife I've had Quinta Ruban. Have a bottle open at the moment and I quite like it. I think the only Calvados finishes I've had have been Arran and they were very good - works very well with the Arran style.
@ hey thank you so much. 🙏🙏🙏
As a few others have also said, Glenmorangie 10 is the botle that got me into whisky and I still have some fondness for it, even if I haven't been able to justify picking up a bottle in a long while. I also believe it's the top-selling single malt here in Scotland. Was curious how the new 12 stacked up, thanks for the review.
I bet a lot of people feel like that. I do. Trying this again after a long absence reminded me why I liked it. Cheers 🥃
Update on the road. The distillery have paid for it to be resurfaced in October.
A very kind review, Shane. I went through a sample pack of Glenmorangie (pre-rebrand) and found this distillery to not suit me at all. I would take a Compass Box Orchard House any day over this castrated bottled boredom, plus the new design is hideous - but then again I'm clearly not in the target group, so to each their own. I will say they're marketing is good, they've been heavily reviewed since the rebrand.
That's a fair judgement. Glenmorangie isn't a style for everyone. To me, it has its charm and nostalgia too but it's not going to be a regular purchase. You may want to try a bottle of the 10yo from the 80s or 90s though. I picked up an old bottle at auction for very little money and it tastes like a 20yo version of the modern 10/12. Far superior. Cheers 🥃
Classic Glenmorangie, increasing their age statements rather than decreasing. Is the quality better as the age goes higher?.... doubtful. Looking forward to the head to head Shane, cheers!
Doubtful indeed. Others have suggested that they're upping the age statement because they're having to resort to more refill or simply poorer casks. Either way, I'm not tasting a more mature whisky, although it is different. Cheers 🥃
Thanks for your thoughts here. Glenmorangie was the first whisky I enjoyed (I wasn’t as keen on the most common alternative, Glenfiddich), though it was many years later I got “into” whisky. I still like it as an easy sipper, one to drink in company without thinking about it. It’s also one I find easy to recognise - recently when I was offered a whisky in a pub without knowing which whisky, I immediately knew it was Glenmorangie.
Strange isn't it. It's a very sparse flavour profile in a way but unique and recognisable. Cheers 🥃
@ cheers! And yes, it’s a funny one.
Glenmorangie 10 was one of my first single malts along with Glenfiddich 12. I knew about the Glenfiddich 12 but had never heard of Glenmorangie. I bought the Glenmorangie 10 after watching a review on the Whisky Vault and enjoyed it. The new 12 isn't available here yet. As for the design, I don't like how the name is split. I preferred the previous design. Cheers!
Most seem to prefer the old design. It is more classy. The juice is still pretty good though thankfully. Cheers 🥃
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one Shane. Been a while since I've had a Glenmoragie in the glass, the pour presentation being one of the reasons (the grape influence on a lot of expressions being another). And for the record: great you manage to adjust the box to your sweater.☝🙂 Slàinte mhath
My thoughts exactly. If they improved the presentation and dropped the cask finishes I'd probably be more interested. They're kind of integral to their house style at this point though. Cheers 🥃
What's going in to Glenfiddich 12 which is a very good 40% expression? A great Spey style. Where are folk like us going with 40% though? Add to that the other misfortunes.
I do love Glenfiddich 12. Best of the core range IMHO. I was very sad to learn that they've recently discontinued the 15 Distillery Edition. Very close to the 12 but properly presented.
Haven’t tried the 12, but can’t imagine it’s very different from the 10. And at that price too… possibly the best mass market value single malt in my view. Definitely one of my go-to’s.
Here in the Czech Republic, Glenmorangie is a bit less available than its (in my humble opinion) main entry lvl competitors Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, so I never had a chance to taste it properly that often. So now I'm taking the opportunity to order the 10yo and new 12yo so I can compare them properly. Honestly I'm quite looking forward to it, as a return to these "beginner" whiskies feels quite refreshing. Despite the tragic presentation, they have something going for them. To answer your question the new-ish rebrand of Glenmorangie doesn't seem so bad to me, yes it's cheesy and everything but classy... but on the other hand it seems to me that they are accepting their position in the market and not playing at something they are not.
I agree: fun and even educational to revisit these beginner malts 👍🥃
Great video. I love peated whiskies but I never tried Laphroaig, this was the video for me.
Glad I could help! Laphroaig 10CS will always have a special place in my heart. Cheers 🥃
Glad to see you're back, was beginning to worry after you missed your upload last week 😉
Ah thanks for noticing 😁 I just got a little behind schedule. Cheers buddy 🥃
Yes these are 43% here. The 10 was @ $42… the new 12 is closer to $60… Agree the profiles are similar…I will be doing a comparison hopefully soon. Cheers 🥃
That's a steep jump for little improvement IMHO. I think we're seeing similar prices. In supermarket discounts anyway. Looking forward to your comparison. Cheers 🥃
Sometimes it's nice to have low abv whiskey. Especially if you wanna start your whiskey evening or just get a nice dram which isn't too expensive or dramatic.
Couldn't agree more 👍🥃
Thanks for reviewing this whisky, I have yet to see it on the shelves in my area.
I'd like to try Scotch, but it's unaffordable where I live compared to bourbon. The price differences in whiskey around the world are crazy, we need to kick out the middleman and demand MSRP. I'm not paying 50 dollars for a watered down 40% Glenmorangie with cancer causing caramel coloring added.
It's frustrating. I'm pretty lucky Scotch and Bourbon wise living in the UK but there are still some things which are unaffordable or just unobtainable. By all means make yourself a nuisance to the local distributors and rep...Let them know that they're missing out on sales... but sadly maybe don't hold your breath...
@@WhiskyLock Yes we have the opposite problem. Bourbon is cheap in America, but the world covets Scotch more as a whole, so I guess you're luckier in that regard. I'd be interested to know just how much is to blame on distributors VS tariffs and taxes. No one in Atlanta drinks Scotch, and it's still sky high.
The re-branding is hideous.
43% and $48 here in the New York area
I've seen it for less in Brooklyn.
@@MrChristopherMolloy I've seen the 10 for $40. This new 12 year they seem to want a lot more
@GOTAisMe I've seen Glenmorangie 10 for $25 in Queens, I've seen the new 12 for $42 in Brooklyn.
@@MrChristopherMolloy crazy prices! $25!?
🥃😀😀
Great video ! Do you prefer this new one or the 12y Lasanta sherry cask ?
Very, very different. Lasanta is all about dry and spicy sherry. Stewed fruits and oak. Countetintuitively perhaps, this is quite a bit sweeter. Lasanta is probably more challenging. Both are worth a try. Cheers! 🥃
Really like the 12 Lasanta. I much prefer it over the 14 Quinta Ruban. But the old 10 is more subtle and light and white fruit. Agree with Shane's comments above. Just very different profiles.
Another perfectly timed video. Just grabbed a 10 year because it was going away & loved it so much I went out & bought their Calvados, Port, & Sherry expressions. Fairly reasonable prices aside from the brandy finish which is a one-off. I think I may buy another 10 after this review I really appreciate this. Haven’t seen the 12 yet here locally in the states.
The 10 is rightfully a classic. And the range of cask finishes are well worth buying just to be able to taste the different cask influences on a common spirit. Very educational and worth doing.
@ yes sir. Did a tasting with the original 10, Calvados 12, & 14 year port. Quinta Ruban was the star for me. Lots of fun like you said seeing the base spirit being enhanced like that. I spent ten plus years drinking only bourbon & that was a terrible mistake being so closed minded. Only just over a year & a half into other categories. When I went to my big box store Sunday the new 12 had showed up & got another 10 year before they were gone for 30 USD 😎. Right around when I got into bourbon they took away the 12 year age statement on the small batch Elijah Craig. Always regretted not bunkering some of that.
Thanks for this review. I hope by praising the good things about this product it will encourage LMVH to take the next step and give us a fully craft presentation. Hitting them with the Ralphy stick isn't the only tacktic.
This is true. We should praise distilleries for any progress towards quality 👍🥃
Some time ago, Glenmorangie changed The Quinta Ruban from 12 years to 14 years. They have now done the same with entry-level whisky. From 10 to 12 years. As you say, Glenmorangie may be overstocked, or they're making more whiskey than they can sell, or... they're just using casks, that have already been used twice or thrice and that aren't as active anymore. The good thing about all of this is that they are aware of it and are trying to improve it. Anyway, 10 years ago I started my single malt journey with Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Glenmorangie whiskies. And Glenmorangie The Quinta Ruban is still close to my heart. Also due to its 46 ABV strength.
Overused barrels is my opinion. QR12 is my fav whisky
Perhaps a little bit of all of the above. The Cask finishes are very nice. IMHO it's worth buying the whole set once for anyone who is curious about tasting different cask types. Cheers 🥃
Yes, exclusively Bourbon casks used in the maturation. I can personally vouch for this. *Kosher Certification by OU.* I agree with your general tasting notes of Orangy, honey and cereal notes but feel that it's just too watery. There are some similar Bourbon cask matured 40% abv single malts which I enjoy, like the Glenfiddich 12 American Oak, Glen Scotia 10, Glen Moray 12, Loch Lomond 10 etc., but for my taste, this Glenmorangie 12 as bottled, is too diluted.
Thanks for the info. Several of the 40% whiskies on your list are more interesting than this - agreed. I found myself enjoying Glenmo 12 more than I expected to though. To me, the low strength is less frustrating than 40% HP12 or even 43% Lagavulin 16. YMMV. Cheers 🥃
Regarding the new box and lable.....imho...it looks cheap, no class at all. I prefer the old box and label. Cheers
The old label is definitely much more classy. And the same can probably be said about the one before that which also has the nostalgia factor for me.
I quite enjoy the old original 10 yo, for what I know is discontinued and replaced with this one. This new 12yo is on my "try before buy list". Here in Sweden, the fixed price is sek479 (£34) in todays currency. Cheers
Review of the 10 and comparison coming soon. To my tastes the new 12 is different. Fruitier, bolder, a little less subtle. But I've been enjoying both. If you like a little more oak in your Glenmo then the new Triple Cask Reserve is very good value too. Cheers 🥃
i got it now on black friday for 22 euros incl. shipping. I cannot complain for this price.
@@sorinsrn5442 great price 👍
The first official bottlings in the recognisable brown sepia labels labeled as "The Glenmorangie Pure Old Highland Malt Whisky" were released in very limited amounts in the 1950s. They didn't start bottling on a regular basis however until the mid-1960s. Glenmorangie nevertheless claim on their website that the original 10-Year-Old was released 175 years ago. That would be about 1849, which is obviously marketing BS! There were no widely available official releases of Malt or "Pure" whisky straight from an individual malt distillery until the 1960s. You could get the likes of Glenmorangie, Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Glenlivet from specialist outlets like Berry Bros, Cadenheads and Harrods and of course, directly from the distillery, but Malt Whisky wasn't even recognised as a product in its own right until Glenfiddich released their "Pure Malt" in 1963.
According to my research, the first reasonably available Single Malt was "The Glenlivet Scotch Whisky", distributed by a Jewish Spirits company called Leymann's of Philadelphia who made regular orders and re-exported around the world at 91 Proof . You could actually get Glenlivet Whisky in London during the Blitz of the 1940s if you knew where to go, re-imported from the US.
Great info as always Reb. 175years is indeed laughable! A few distilleries have a flexible relationship with truth and history.
I believe basic 12 yo is addition to the whisky line, not a replacement of the 10yo release, which is present on their website and everywhere is in stock
I hope you're right because I like the 10 more in some ways. It's being described as a replacement for the 10 though which has disappeared from shelves near me.
No, I don't believe it. I was writing an article where I was reviewing the new Glenmorangie 12 The Original, and decided to take a break and see what was going on with the US Elections, when your video pops up, uploaded an hour ago, reviewing the same whisky. OK. I had to watch...
Breakfast Whisky? 🤔
Don't mind if I do 😂 It's what some call a whisky which is light, gentle and easy drinking enough that you could almost have it for breakfast.
@@WhiskyLock Oh, I've clearly misunderstood, then.😮 I (wrongly) assumed it meant a very cereally style.🤔 Haven't seen/tried but the new labels/designs are garish with hard colours, and the name-arranging is just wrong. /sigh!/ Gets stuck half-way down the giraffe's throat. Many may side with the familiar but I don''t think that's why I dislike these new labels. They're trying to stand out on over-crowded shelves and I suppose will succeed.
@@jbar6284 I think some say it to mean that too. And this has that cereal and orange juice profile to match that meaning as well. The rebrand is 100% to stand out on shelves as you say. I prefer the previous two designs myself.
Despite being American I never much warmed to Bourbon until I had a Knob Creek. I still generally prefer Scotch but do like Eagle Rare, Old Weller and Wild Turkey Rare Breed. Have you tried the unchillfiltered version of the latter?
Hi! Rare Breed unfiltered? Nope haven't had that. Knob Creek inspired me to find some better bourbons too though. Along with Weller 12, Eagle Rare and Wild Turkey 8yo 👍
I just got this for £25 really love it .
Really great price 👍
I use Chivas 12 as a cleaning solvent :)
