    Regarding the Ballistic Fist, I’m going to leave this snippet from the wiki here:
    “Despite firing shotgun shells upon a successful hit, the weapon does not drain 20 gauge or 12 gauge shells from the player character's inventory. This is the result of an engine limitation: melee and unarmed weapons cannot be assigned an ammo type, nor set to drain them. Obsidian encountered problems attempting to implement this feature and ultimately the ballistic fist has an invisible, infinite ammo supply.”

      Same idea for energy based melee weapons such as the Displacer Glove, wich has a visable small Energy Cell in its model. If you were to go back to Fallout 1 and 2 (I also beleve Tactics) The Power Fist will also use small energy cells as a source of power/ammo.

    The Fallout 3 Alien Disintegrator reload is actually bugged and instead does the "low durability" animation where you smack the gun to put it into battery. The unique variant "Destabilizer" has the proper reload where you remove a power cell from the top of the reciever and replace it with a new one (it's essentially the Plasma Pistol reload animation)

    • @magicman4673

      I think it's the other way around. the reload animation has clipping and the PC holds the gun one handed while doing so. The animation for the regular disintegrator seems to be the PC pushing a button to load the next 100 cells in.

    Bozar form New Vegas is a callback to Fallout 2 machine gun Bozar. It was very weird , being an .223 lmg with visual look of a classical barret. Main feature of this gun was it used very common round and could be obtained very early in the game with a bit of preparation, on top of being very good gun. So it became a sort of meme in original Fallout community

    • @cykeok3525
      @cykeok3525 Рік тому +16

      It was definitely an odd weapon even in its original Fallout 2 incarnation.
      It's fully automatic, firing a fairly light round, so that's a design that doesn't mirror anything intended as a sniper's weapon in the real world.
      Presumably the bursts must be fired at an extremely high cyclic rate, perhaps with some form of recoil compensation like the AN-94, to reduce shot dispersion from recoil/muzzle climb.
      Even if that was the case, it's .223/5.56, which isn't a great round to use as extended ranges (compared to a full sized rifle round).

      I can't remember if this is true of 4, but in _New Vegas_ there are plenty of places where you have to give up your weapons at the door to get in, and if your Sneak skill is high enough, you can retain one or more weapons if you own any that are flagged as "concealable". This can be very useful, particularly since you're often going into those places with the intention of killing someone, stealing something, or otherwise doing things that are probably going to make a lot of people want to shoot at you.

    One might also argue for the rotating gatling gun that the amount of power being pushed through the laser means that it would overheat from a sustained fire; therefore the cycling/rotating allows for more rapid fire (as surmised) but also increases the cooling due to the airflow around the laser.

    • @littlekeg03
      @littlekeg03 Рік тому +20

      the in-universe reason is that shooting multiple lasers from one barrel would damage the gun that's why the laser RCW from New Vegas has such low durability

    • @littlekeg03
      @littlekeg03 Рік тому +5

      @cykeok3525 it spins because of how the capacitors work. Laser guns use capacitors to generate the laser but after firing the capacitor needs time to recharge or else the laser won't be as powerful. The laser RCW has multiple capacitors inside that spin while you are firing. So the Gatling laser is designed to fire one laser from one barrel and then spin to allow the capacitor to recharge and it puts less strain on the gun by only firing one laser from one barrel.

    • @Phlarx
      @Phlarx Рік тому +3

      @@littlekeg03 With a ballistic gatling weapon, the spinning motion arguably makes the ammunition feed and breach actions and so on easier, but with a laser gatling, there is no such requirement that I'm aware of, so a fixed cluster (think quad-barrel shotgun, but without scattering the beams) firing in sequence with cooling fans might be much less complex (and probably smaller / lighter weight) for basically the same result.

    A note on the gatling laser is that it parrots the automatic laser weapons in general, in that they all, in F4 and beyond, use there gatling-style rotating chambers.
    The obvious answer being that it is a limitation to their rate of fire, which makes sense, as presumably, they'd need to charge their capacitors between each shot. Thus, by making multiple capacitors, each independently charged, and put on a rotating chassis, you end up with a faster rate of fire than you would normally be able to attain.
    So in the cycle of rotating, each barrel fires once, then charges its capacitor, before firing again.

      The Bozar is based on a Fallout 1 & 2 gun. In those games, which were both turn based, it gave you all the benefits of both a precision weapon and a machine gun. It was a late game "Super Weapon". It was added to Fallout: New Vegas as part of a later DLC primarily for nostalgia and fan-service purposes.

    So on the Gatling Laser. What I think it is lore wise, is that they wanted a large heavy duty mounted/power armor laser weapon. Something good for hosing down groups of infantry, destroying light vehicles, and general suppression duties.
    They found that mounting a single laser optic was very quickly burning it out to reach the optimal firing rate for the weapon.
    So, the weapon spins, and it gives the optic just enough time to cool down and be reset before the optic comes in contact with the power source, connecting the leads, giving the laser module the energy to output the laser blast.
    We know it's effectively using the standard LAER laser module, so that module probably isn't rated for the fire rate and power output.
    And what's cheaper than building an entirely new laser module pattern?
    *Just bolting more of the modules on it*

    The gatling laser makes sense in my mind.
    It appears as though each barrel is the functional part of a laser rifle, the focusing crystal and energy projector. To direct enough energy to be lethal, it would have to also likely give off quite a bit of heat. Having multiple of them in a rotating array gives each rifle a chance to cool, and enhances the cooling effect by rotating them.

    I think you were pretty close with the Gatling laser explanation. The capacitors for laser weapons in Fallout need a moment to recharge between each shot, so having multiple capacitors spinning around means that three of the capacitors can be charging while one fires, allowing for constant firing. It would also allow for better cooling, as each laser lens can be cooling off while rotating around waiting for its turn. The automatic variant of the laser rifles in Fallout 4 work the exact same way. So yes, while I'm certain the "cool factor" had a lot to do with the design, there is practicality to how it works. Even if it is a bit over-engineered.

    Jonathan, a directed energy weapon needs a substantial power source and run that massive amount of energy through the weapon and out the emmiters. this would dump massive amounts of heat into the system and result in huge overheating issues which the modern military is currently struggling with handling. allowing more some slight cooling and not constantly firing out the same barrel could extend the firing time before overheating occurs.

    They didnt buy M14s initially, and just wanted a way to convert relatively cheap Garands to 7.62 NATO instead of buying M14s they didnt really need. The Mk1 I believe, with the Mod 0 being a chamber insert and the Mod 1 being a brand new barrel, both using a block in the magazine to take up the extra space since 7.62 is shorter than -06. They eventually did switch to the M14, some are still used as line throwing guns as well.

    I would have to disagree on the point of no energy weapons. After all, instant hit, no significant recoil, no need to care about gravity or wind, if you can see it you can hit it. And much easier logistics; no need to transport boxes of bullets. Can just recharge your batteries at an electrical outlet.
    EDIT: and to add to that. A Gatling laser can actually be reasonable, as lasers heat up, by not being 100% efficent. So, having strapped multiple laser guns togheter that fire one after the other can theoretically lessen the heat problems, thus boosting rate of fire.

      And, if each laser were fitted with a visible light (or infrared) aiming laser the sighting problem would not arise.

    I think a gas burning flame is blue with extra oxygen. A Bunsen burner, which was a simple but world changing invention, simply has a hole for extra oxygen to get in.
    Not sure if any liquid you burn directly burns blue.
    And a combustion engine (with blue flames) doesn't count because it's really (literally)gas+Oxygen that's exploding.

    • @derekp2674
      @derekp2674 Рік тому +1

      I believe the blue colour arises when the flame is hot enough to ionise the hydrogen atoms in the gas (or other hydrocarbon fuel). Providing excess oxygen helps to ensure complete combustion of the fuel which increases the flame temperature.
      Where hydrogen is not present in a fuel (e.g. with coal or charcoal) the colour of the flames will tend to change from yellow to white as the fire gets hotter but with little or no hydrogen there won't be much of a blue colour.
