That's probably my biggest problem with the stylistic side of the game, considering that separate tactical / empty reload animations have became a genre staple by this point. Not only is it less "correct" or "realistic", it also removes the strategy of timing your reloads to get faster animations.
Could be a deliberate choice since Left 4 Dead games also had only 1 reload. In fact all Valve games seem to have only 1 reload animation per gun; perhaps they wanted to stay true to the original.
I was just coming to comment the same completely ruins any immersion for me sadly, also doesn't look like they've animated the bolt reciprocating on any of the AR15 type guns in the game either when crouched with the gun canted.

I'm pretty sure the "tilt" of the guns while crouched is something that they just grabbed from Titanfall, where most of the time you're "crouched" is when sliding and then it kinda makes more sense, then it got put into other games just as maybe a stylistic choice or as a way for your gun to tell you if you're crouched or standing.
It's also a hood indicator to see that you are in fact crouching, which makes sense for a game like titanfall where you go in and out of crouch rapidly for movement.
It also shows off more of the skin. Normally that's good in games where you wanna hook people into buying skins, but since you earn everything so far, it's hard to see that as a real driving force... yet
@@sirrenoko5245 i like it regardless. it shows off the weapon model alot. especially considering the side that isnt visible while standing has more parts sticking out.
Yeah for me it is a visual cue of your stance or way to use the weapon that is clearly different than just "ADS". I haven't played this game, so I assume that when it went "gangster" it meant you were bracing it to "tighten the hipfire crosshair" which would be great for a zombie game. Kind of like in games where you don't completely ADS, but you do that "slightly zoomed in with tighter crosshairs" mode. EDIT: Watched the M9 clip again, it definitely tightens your hipfire spread. It is WAY easier to show the player a tilted weapon over an icon or "Fallout 3 zoom" and tell the player they can magdump into a crowd.
Yeah, I prefer it like this over having a little icon on screen telling you you're crouched. Far Cry 2 did it as well, just not tilting the gun, more having a lowered profile. It's smart design that doesn't clutter the HUD.
OK so you're my people then... I have to complain about how, once you load a magazine in the AK in this game, when you rack the charging handle it doesn't go back far enough, and it doesn't grab a cartridge and push it into the chamber. Instead its just like you replace the magazine and then go "Oh look, an empty chamber!" and then continue firing. I can't unsee it.
If gamespot brought on a few more experts that would be good for talking about games, gamespot could carve itself a niche. Experts in a subject talking reviewing stuff is pretty popular, and this series is already a unique one.
I love the moment where the logic of canting the gun clicks in for John. His technical knowlage is always a treat. His break down of the pistols were my favorite.
I think the DEagle is so popular because its "beauty of purpose". What I mean is, this pistol looks exactly like to what it does. It's big hunk of metal spitting slightly smaller bits of lead down the range.
I think it's a mix of easily identifiable design (it's massive) that was clear even with late 90s graphics, having a niche as a lower capacity high damage pistol, being well represented by action movies around when FPS games took off (The Matrix, Desperado, etc.), and even as games got a little more detailed it was now gaming tradition to include the thing.
The thing about the AA-12 is that it has a recoil damping mechanism. Makes the thing quite heavy, but it's astonishingly effective. I've seen a video of a guy firing one one handed, and it barely moved. So when I saw it here, my immediate reaction was "that's way too much recoil". Which must seem so weird to those of you unfamiliar with the thing.
@@yvroyya8051 there have, however, been closed bolt versions, like the civilian iteration I recall having seen a while back. Still not sure if it has gone into production yet, however.
It got scrapped because the ATF deemed it too easy to convert to full auto, therefore making it a defacto "machine gun" in their eyes (it was still semiautomatic but this is how they defined what a machine gun is); the company that was producing it took the design back to the drawing board and they're now working on another way of making it fire from a closed bolt in semiauto.
Also it doesn't have semi auto. Straight up, there's no selector switch, you're stuck with full auto. At least that's base, but there's definitely a market there, so I can see a semi automatic one existing, just not commonly.

It’s one thing for a soldier to field mod their gun in the field for some kinda shortcoming, but, some of these customization choices. . . I . . . my head hurts and I’m not even a professional like our big guy is.
4:05 Yeah, they do exist. They are fitted from factory by Springfield for their SOCOM 16 and Scout Squad carbines. The idea is to mount a long eye relief magnified optic, but you can also mount a red dot. While the scout rifle concept was the branchild of Jeff Cooper, but the idea of using a long eye relief optic is nothing new. The germans did it with the ZF41 for their Kar98k.
Springfield armory actually sells an M1A scout, which has the scout configuration rail on the front hand guard. Though, I believe it mounts underneath it and there’s just a cutout in the hand guard so you still keep your zero
yes the Scout and SOCOM versions have the mount and it can be added to pretty much any M1A if you have the handguard. it clamps to the barrel so it is solid. the handguard just has a cutout for it. my M1A Scout has it but i took it off and used a standard fiberglass handguard.
Jonathan is such a good goddamn host. I love how he goes on these little tangents to fully explain terminology or quirks that non-gun nuts wouldn't really get otherwise, it feels both entertaining and educational.
Another reason for the “Slamfire” company name could be to try to allude to the company Surefire. Obviously they wouldn’t use Surefire’s actual name since that’d probably require licensing rights, so using “Slamfire” might be a way to get around that
Likewise, you don't see "HK" that often on any of their guns(like say, HK416 and HK MP5, to name a few examples; there's plentiful out there, in fact) used in video games and movies, for the same reasons(albeit much stricter in terms of copyright issues).
Regarding the reload of the "M4 Carbine": in military service on the HK416, we learned to input the magazine with the thumb positioned to release the bolt quickly after. In a magazine competition cycling through 7 mags, each with 2 bullets hitting within the 9-target at 15 meters, I averaged at 3 seconds per complete reload from tactical west and a total time of 27 seconds, hitting all 14 shots. So definitely taught in military settings and was very often reliable and consistently successful in my experience.
That's not a flak gun, that's just a straight up 105mm artillery piece/howitzer. (Though there are a couple of decals that incorrectly say 155, but that thing is way too small to be a 155mm howitzer)
@@Thenlar I know pretty much nothing about artillery and haven't played that mission in a while so I couldn't remember too clearly. Thanks for clearing that up lol

Found this series and been binge watching it, I'm honestly surprised that Johnathan hasn't been exposed to the lunacy of Killing Floor 2 weapons like the DoomStick or Vlad The Impaler or the very real physics of the RPG7 in there
As far as I could see, every weapon has a full mag when reloading on empty. Its most noticeable on the M95, but the Desert Eagle also is easy to see that with. It really annoys me considering video games have had empty mags visible for a long time now. I get if the devs didn't wanna do different animations for empty mags vs mags with rounds, but at least don't let the rounds be visible in an empty one
Also the bolt slides over the bullet without covering it up. (Look close at the last second view of the reload, bullet is still visible with closed bolt)
The only explanation I've seen for holding a gun sideways was in MGS3 where they talk about the chinese using that as a technique to get some kind of horizontal spread for their bullets to hit a target when they couldn't really aim. Please do a Metal Gear game
I think its meant to be a take on point shooting when you have say a scope on top and offset irons on the side. Except, this game doesn’t have offset irons but at Zombie shooting range I guess not always needed.
I actually address that in my book on the C96 Mauser - there's no evidence for it that I could find. Didn't stop me getting the illustrator to depict it in one of the plates though :) I have also tried it - it doesn't...not work.
From gameplay perspective, in B4B they angle every single firearm (as far as I'm aware) like that when your character is in prone position to give the player a visual distinction. I'd wager the main reason for the tilt specifically is a "cool" factor.
I think the gangster tilt might have been introduced as a way to make most of the screen still visible to the player even while being surrounded; it makes sense that you'd want clear horizontal view to both sides under threat from zombies. So not only is it sorta practical (until stuff starts getting into the ejection port) but it gives visual flavor to the game as mentioned.
I believe that canting a firearm is commonly done when you have a secondary optic, or when you are using a laser sight. Other than that, it could be a way of maintaining good control without using your sight, but also without aiming from the hip.
Never get bored watching these vids, the way Jon is able to marry his love of firearms with a genuine liking of video games is so charismatic. Would be awesome to see a 'reacts to' the DayZ guns albeit there's a lot to get through. Many thanks.
The guns from Payday 2 or Killing Floor 2 would probably fun to review ^^ Oh, what he forgot to mention for ArmA 3: There a different magazines filled with tracers, not every shot is visible in that game
Usally u have tracers even in daylight operations in ur magazine. e.g every fifth round is a tracer or whatever depends on the situation. Most situations back in my days in the army we had every 3th round a tracer in "wider/open" fields.
The AA-12 actually has an advanced recoil mitigation system that makes it virtually non-existent. FPS Russias has a video of him dual wielding 2 and even firing one full auto with a single hand without bracing it.
@@shamanahaboolist Johnathan said that while the AA12 have a pretty accurate rate of fire, is actually kinda slower than the real one. The upside of AA12 is the drum magazine and the downside of AA12 is the drum magazine.
10:30 No one going to point out that when reloading that Barret, ammunition is visible (on ready to feed position) when bolt is locked to trunion... That bothers me a ton.
10:00 the reason for the weapon tilt in crouch hipfire is just to communicate to players they are crouching. Pretty nice because friendly fire makes or breaks playthroughs and knowing that you aren’t in the way of people behind you can help that.
The forward picatinny rail on the M1A scout and Socom models is mounted as a clamp to the barrel and protrudes through a cut-away in the heat shield. It's sturdy, but could cook your optics if you're maintaining sustained fire for long enough
I cry knowing the devs dont wanna change the recoil system, no wonder you can full auto a guy with a mk47 at 50m so easily, hell why try to adjust after every shot with a semi sniper when you can just hold breath and the reticle will go back exactly where it is, frankly it's the easiest recoil system I've ever seen

So quick thing about the M1A sight rail. I’ve had one in the past with a rail like that. It’s not attached to the top of the handguard. The handguard actually has a cutout in it and the rail attaches directly to the barrel so you won’t lose zero.
19:55 the M16 handguard holes are there, you can see them on the reload when the gun is pointed up (20:09). I guess it's just a weird angle through the scope.
2 small corrections/add ons: 1)The M1A's (at least the ones I sold when I worked at gun shop) came with the forward "Scout" rail, inspired by the Jeff Cooper Scout Rifle layout. It's attached to the barrel, not the cover, and comes on the 16" and 18", standard From S.A.I.. It can be fitted to any length M1A. My 16" SOCOM holds zero and can use the optic with both eyes open, though heat does transfer to the optic and should be taken into account. 2) The tilt shooting might just be their take on "off axis" shooting?.. Usually done with an Red-dot or back up iron sights @45*, off axis shooting is a useful for rapid shooting/target transition. I was told it was originally from SEAL's mounted on the side of a rib boat in Vietnam, then spread as a valid technique. You can get a lot lower with a tilt by slanting the mag out of the way. Amazing vid as always! Cheers!!
I was looking for this regarding the scout rail. The first time I saw it was on a SOCOM M14 and I didn't get why you would mount an optic that far forward until I saw the sight picture for myself.
I'm surprised he didn't notice that the barret still has a round in the chamber, even when you fire all bullets!! That really bothered me while playing for some reason
Not necessarily in the chamber, but it's definitely distracting that the magazine counter says 0 while the magazine still shows a perfectly good round.

@@SavageBunnyGetMoney I mean there is a reason many of the army rather use M14 rather than M16 at the time (M16 is still in "experimental" phase while M14 & AK47 is proven as a solid gun. Yes, they also have a problem on their own but compared to M16, they are better)
Another thing about blood on the weapon - it starts off wet and film-y, which is easy to clean off, but with time and/or heat (such as the pressure-baring parts of a weapon under heavy use) - it will sinter and coagulate on the surface very quickly. When also combined with other viscera, you've got a recipe for making your gun only good as a barbecue.
My "can I keep up with the expert" score was doing pretty good up to the Barrett (in the "Oh, yeah - I recognize that from Forgotten Weapons, and I think I might get the name if he doesn't say it too fast" sense.) But once he started critiquing the M9, I was like "OK, these are some deep cuts."
3:30 yeah this happened when I was at MCT. This marine's m16 did this when we were shooting table 6, and he just dumped 20 rounds or so into the ground after shooting his drill. it was pretty funny lol.
I feel like if I was ever in the position of making a game with guns (real or otherwise) I would just get in contact with Johnathan or someone like him and just ask if he could take a look over the weapons for me. Maybe even ask him if there's any particularly interesting guns that could be used to model off of, I'm sure he'd be able to find some that have never really been in many games before
As a fellow Brit it brings tears to my eyes to see every time Jonathan has to pause to replace "fuck up" with "Malfunction" 3:55 but at least he was allowed 5:42.
Part of the reason for the tilt I would assume is to give the player more view space when they are crouched. I feel like when a player is standing and you can see the arms grabbing the gun you have your feet underneath you which is fine; however when you crouch, the ground 'moves up' on your screen and your view gets *slightly* lessened with the gun taking up a good chunk of the right side. They could also just like the look of the 'McMillan Tilt' pistol hold and moved it over to rifles as well.
@7:46 It's mentioned that this gun is better on semi-automatic, and that games have a hard time achieving that. In Killing Floor 2, the AA-12 is wayyyy better in semi-auto mode.
20:13 There was a cool scene in the Hurt Locker that showed what Jonathan is talking about there, where a Barrett .50 failed to fire because there was blood in the magazine which jammed the feed.
I enjoy when you say “if you’re a skilled user .” Or “if you’ve ever used this.” I feel like you are actively trying to make your audience more involved, Good on ya. And yes wood furniture guns are a pain to maintain. I own quite a few wood furnished guns.

22:30 This grin from Jonathan is noteworthy for it's patronage of a film that is STILL (and always) one of the finest pieces of sci-fi/action cinematographic excellence you'll ever fall in love with... And also the property of Weyland Yutani
On the M1A’s Rail system, that’s the standard setup. The hand guard has been trimmed away to allow the rail to be welded to the barrel or sometimes you’ll find they’ve got a Clamp Mount that wraps the barrel. although the one in B4B appears to be welded. My M1A had this type of rail when I bought it. You can buy them now from Springfield with the rail screwed to the barrel via hex screws
24:12, Also, you *really* don't want to fire two 12 gauge cartridges at once. My brother had a side-by-side with a faulty trigger mechanism that fired the two barrels at once (or in very quick succession, hard to tell) a couple of times during a hunting session. apparently, it was extremely unpleasant. Needless to say, he didn't touch the thing again until it was fixed.
Jonathan needs to do the weapons in the Code of Honor trilogy, about the French Foreign Legion. This must be done in three separate videos, as the modelling changes between games (and some are really well-made and detailed). Jonathan also needs to see the guns in House of Ashes. The characters shoot like in those old Western movies, with infinite ammo and with ghastly accuracy.
Thanks for pointing out the AR15 reload- I was playing the game the other day, and something about the reload didn't feel "right" to me- not incorrect or undoable, but a bit too slick. Glad it wasn't just me going slightly mad 😂
The thing where they are holding the rifle canted is called short stocking, and is misused in almost every video game it's featured it. it's for close quarters so you can move from low ready to firing position faster since you have the buttstock on top of your shoulder rather than against it. If you have a 20 inch barrel then by short stocking you can keep the muzzle of your weapon the same distance as your arms reach giving you more room to move around tight spaces
9:49 The firing tilt when crouched would probably be to get a better, more stable rest on one's knee/thigh, hence the slight tilt where the elbow goes for the knee/thigh. And I'd like to point out when it tilts, it's in the Hip-fire mode, so they're more trying to fight the kick of the 5.45x39mm Cartridge than use the sights.
I’m just waiting for the day when he absolutely shreds CoD Vanguard since they bubba every firearm and in a lot of cases make then unusable. Hopefully this happens soon
20:10 You can actually see the holes on the hand guard in-game just moments later after he says that they weren't there in the game. I think what we're seeing in the optics is the handle, not the hand guard with the holes/ports on the top.

This is probaly best description on the desert eagle I have ever heard
True. Looks big and powerful, and it is. Just not all that practical lol
FPSRussia taught us this a decade ago
Not to mention the AA-12 fires from a closed bolt in B4B but in reality is an open bolt shotgun

Heat is literally my favorite movie ever made. It's pretty awesome that you gave it a shoutout.

He missed that the M95's reload animation has a full, unfired magazine being ejected when you're supposed to be unloading an 'empty' magazine.
Thiiiis was the comment I was looking for haha. I thought he would pick up on that too. It bugs the shit out of me!
@@JonathanFergusonRoyalArmouries wait! Your basically Gun Jesuses printer.
From gameplay perspective, in B4B they angle every single firearm (as far as I'm aware) like that when your character is in prone position to give the player a visual distinction. I'd wager the main reason for the tilt specifically is a "cool" factor.
It has in-game utility, in that aiming offset doesn't zoom in your sights so you retain peripheral but practically IRL? Borderline useless.

"Brains are not a test medium for military rifles" is now my favourite Jonathan quote.
Good catch.
Oh lordy, really? Yes, I did miss that. There's a lot to take in with these.

My dad friend fought in Vietnam he didn't mind the M14 cause the M16 was so Cursed it would jam all the time they rather pick up a AK 47

23:22 The way Jon says that makes it seem like it's *his* "criminal context"
the way he glances at the camera during his pause is actually a little creepy lmao
Did not expect to be taught a lesson about what zombie brains do to feeding mechanisms. Obligatory "10 out of 10 would learn again" comment here.
Would really love to see Jonathan look at some of the GTA games.
"I'm not going to get into the argument of whether or not this is an AK-47. Because it's an AKM."
lol
As an old fan of Left 4 Dead, I like how much he's bringing it up. Seems he's got some fond memories with it that I appreciate.
Would love to see Jonathon’s reaction to weapons of Halo.
Can't wait for him to shit all over the original MA5B... that'll bot be painful and fun. Love that gun in Halo: CE.
im in love with this man
20:10 You can actually see the holes on the hand guard in-game just moments later after he says that they weren't there in the game. I think what we're seeing in the optics is the handle, not the hand guard with the holes/ports on the top.
Honestly, can anyone think of a FPS that feels truly complete _without_ a double-barreled "super" shotgun?
Insurgency sandstorm.
I'm seeing ads for this game everywhere and wonder if it's really that good.
Could easily be L4D3.
It's only good if you have friends to play it with, or if you don't mind playing with random people since you don't progress solo
The general opinion seems to be that it's not worth full price, but it seems to be fun with friends.
If you're looking for the L4D of this generation this isn't quite it.
@@GeneralKaid They're working to patch in solo progress
