Awesome information; I love eating my plant based diet. It has been a journey for sure, I was the toughest one to convince I did not need meat, dairy and eggs, I feel so much better.

I felt new-born after a 10-day nil-by-mouth period in hospital after intestinal surgery. All the internal physiological root causes of my chronic hypertension and high blood pressure seemed to have been wiped out simply and primarily because I'd eaten and drunk nothing at all for 10 days - my body, blood vessels etc seemed to be unblocked, freed up and repaired and I felt like a teenager again in so many ways. Now the only way I can enjoy and quickly and efficiently digest food(mostly vegan) is by eating once a day al fresco on the beach late at night - but before and after eating I have to spend 10-15 minutes briskly walking/jogging, with a few minutes of upper-body exercise then - most importantly - swimming in the (usually cold) sea for just 10-15 seconds. After putting on warm clothes I spend another minute or two jogging/walking etc to get my body temperature back up to warm-ish. After this 15 minute beach+swim ritual my appetite is miraculously fully restored(and then some!!), my stomach is screaming for food and drink and everything I then scoff down right there on the beach is digested as fast and as easily as it was when I was a kid. It sounds crazy of course - but I'm now totally addicted to doing and experiencing all of that under a starry/moonlit sky on the deserted Mediterranean beach late at night(11pm-ish) and just a 2km bike-ride from where I live here in Spain. I can't eat indoors anymore - or even al freso or 'al cigarette smoke' outside a bar, cafe or restaurant next to the beach. Only my radical nightly al 'fresco extremo' beach-sea ritual works the miracle..

Yeah. I went for a physical, just to have 140/90 [surprise!] I'm 50ish, mostly vegan, normal bmi, otherwise feel pretty good, but eat a fair amount of junk. I've had a lot of stress lately also. Time to cut out the salt and junk, I just got some hibiscus tea. Thanks for sharing your expertise, much appreciated!

I have a question for Dr. Klaper and for anyone who might want to chime in and share their experiecne. I was a sloppy vegetarian for about 40 years.... I don't mean that I ate any meat during that time, but just that I didn't eat healthy... rather, I ate: white bread, cookies, banana bread, date squares, potato chips, ice cream and drank tons of milk. Well, my blood pressure shot way up. The doctors put me on perindopril and thing went well and my blood pressure dropped to safe levels. But, I suffer from terrible stomach aches (have most of my life) and so, someone said I needed to eat red meat and lots of it... they said it would help my diabetes, too. So, I went on a carnivore diet for almost 2 years and gained a little weight (I didn't cut out the dairy), and my blood pressure shot up to over 165/90. My doctor wanted to put me on another blood pressure med to work with my existing one; it is called, amlodipine. I didn't want any more drugs and so, I tried the vegan diet. After only 4 weeks, on the vegan diet, my blood pressure is a constant 120ish over 70ish. My question is: Since I was able to bring my blood pressure down to a good number without the amlodipine, can I stay on this vegan diet and eventually get off my perindopril...? I am not holding anyone to any opinions on this.... I mean, I know most of us won't be doctors and I am not looking for solid medical advice, here... and if it doesn't work, I won't say; "Hey, you told me this would work!" I'm just wondering if anyone has gone this route and got off all the high blood pressure meds.... thanks.

Sir, high fat diet cannot be viscous (postprandial Lipemia) which occurs only when there is metabolic inflexibility ( Personal Fat threshold is reached) in which case the chylomicrons are unable to deliver the already saturated fat tissue.

I am a 72 year old man who has been vegan, sos free for 20 years. I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure (164/86) and if I don't bring it down the VA is going to make me take blood pressure medicine. I eat a pound of kale per day along with berries, flack seeds, cacao, red lentil chili with garlic, onions, mushrooms. No salt or oil. I am not over weight (179lbs). I don't know what to do or how with my diet I still have this.

It seems vegan diets increase bp. Im in the same boat, but am not sure the cause yet. Its probably a deficiency of some sort or too.much of something else. No one seems to have an answer. They just mindlessly repeat that vegan diets lower blood pressure.

Thank you very much, extremely helpful. Doesn't the body remove Excess sodium-salt from the body through pee ? If that is the case, then why does sodium-salt increase blood pressure when salt is an electrolyte and required for proper body function and blood pressure. I am a vegan and have lower than normal salt level (result of my recent blood test) and excessive high blood pressure (170s Systolic level on medication). Thanks

Hi Doctor K. Due to low BP during WFPB Diet, I stopped taking BP meds under a PA's care. Now, my BP is over 150/110 again. Im losing weight and sticking to only homemade whole food plants under Dr Gregor's Daily Dozen. Should I go back onto BP meds, or trust that my BP will eventually lower itself?

Sadly, for some of us, we just can't beat genetics.
Whole food plant eater for years now. Great BMI, lean and muscular like a boxer (5'8" 149lbs), gone a month with zero added salt, fasted several times (five days each time) and yet....high blood pressure. Even when I am taking in sodium via added to my foods - I might, MIGHT hit 1,500mg but typically closer to 1,000 or less.
Lots of greens, hibiscus tea, green tea, various other herbal every day, plenty of potassium & magnesium, exercise six days per week, high antioxidant diet, eat outside the home maybe once every two months, around 65g to 90g+ per day fiber ALL from my food and no supplements, 20% fat in my diet from nuts and seeds, 70% carbs, 10% protein....still, high blood pressure :-(
If it doesn't go away soon I will have to grudgingly begin medication.

In addition to doing the no salt like you, I was helped by increasing my nitric oxide through eating six servings of leafy greens per day as described by Dr. Esselstyn, and by eating 30 grams of ground flax seed as described by Nutrition Facts. Together they were worth about 10 points of systolic. I measure my BP every morning and a couple of times per month I'm still hypertensive, so I take one 0.1 mg of clonidine on that day.

Are you taking you readings at home ? I've noticed I get a higher reading when I'm going to doctor or if I have to get a health screening for work. But then i relax and do meditation and breathing and it comes down. Also when I take it daily for a while ,some time several times a day, I notice I get use to the machine and it goes down. Some times when I'm taking the reading I can feel my adrenaline go up and I get a higher reading. Then I'll do some deep breathing and it will come down. I hope this helps.
