a few years back I attempted suicide and my family didn't come to the hospital ( they didn't care ) so my Maths teacher at the time, Ms. Moed, drove to the hospital every day for three months to help me recover and to this day she is the most wonderful person I know and she helped me get into the university of my choice, I have now graduated with honors in engineering, I can honestly say I would not be here without her.

@Some Fella how is taxation is theft? if you have enough money you pay in to the system, in return you get free healthcare, an income when you retire (it's crap but it is still something), law enforcement, free education for your family or any family you may have in the future, it supports disabled people and those with learning disabilities and those with mental illnesses (although if people think that teachers have it hard they should look at those who work in that area) some of which you may develop as you get older, it pays for those who suddenly lose their jobs (not enough normally unless you're like me and disabled and universal credit is a fucking disaster) it pays for the government who run the country (ok they aren't always good, right now they're shit but that's torries for you but at least someone's doing it and you have a say as to how they do it) and much more, if anything it's a pretty good fucking deal and on top of that you don't even need to pay anything until you can, i don't pay anything and can still get all of that (well i pay £11 plus my optional TV licence) and one day if i ever get a job or win the lottery (which ever comes first) i'll gladly pay back into it so that others can get what i got. basically if you use anything funded by the tax payer and have the money you should be contributing to it.

Ninja Jellyfish you should complain about the education system not the teachers themselves. There's so many hoops you have to jump through which can make teaching and learning tedious and uninspiring and teachers not getting paid enough but having to do so much unpaid overtime leads to teachers being drained to the point they don't care anymore

You have every right to complain about the school system. Teachers do deserve respect, yes. But the ones who don't teach or do a terrible job at it because they just feel like it do deserve to be called out. As does the entire school system as a while if you feel that it could be improved. There's a difference between being rude and disrespectful, and respectfully pointing out the things that could be changed or improved.

I'm studying A level biology and I'm in my second year. The teacher we had last year was absolutely horrendous, didn't teach most of the spec, patronized the female students, and offered no help when we asked for it. However our teacher this year is wonderful. She's been cleaning up the mess the last teacher left behind with our grades. She's funny, cares about our education, and most of all she motivates us everyday. The worst thing is that she's overworked and gets little support from the college. She puts so much effort into making our lessons and the workbooks she gives to us that cater to everyone's different learning style. Teachers like my A level biology teacher are absolute heroes.

You must be insane if you’re considering a job as a teacher in 2018.
Cuts have resulted in schools being understaffed and under-resourced.
The uk government claims you’ll get base salary of around £27k but the reality is you’ll get £23k if you’re lucky. Odds are that you’ll end up as an assistant on £16k but saddled with the responsibilities of a full teacher/pastoral carer/safeguarding officer.
Competent head teachers are extremely rare and you’re much more likely to work underneath a narcissist, a money managing bean counter or a bully with an authority complex than a professional who works for the benefit of the school, the pupils and the teaching staff.
Staff are often so exhausted and fed up that those who aren’t off with stress are completely detached from their job. And schools are notorious for being toxic workplaces; if the kids don’t break you down, the other teachers will.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, you’ll have to deal with the parental generation who will file a complaint against the teachers who sentence their kid to detention for throwing a chair through a window and then waging a psychotic online smear campaign against said teacher.
This is the sort of shit that teachers have to put up with in 2018.

A teacher gave me a pair of shoes because mine were giving me bruises on the bottom of my feet, were severely beat up, didn't keep out the rain or the cold. I have never been so grateful. Today I had a nose bleed and she arranged to have my uniform washed and a spare pe top I could wear round school so I didn't have to walk around covered in my own blood. I really appreciate that. My teachers have made me feel loved and safe when I was being abused. I owe the person that I am today to my teachers, past and present.

    My best teachers were:
My high school tech teacher Mr Jones, who was engaging and funny and always kept everyone motivated by telling people they'd make progress and be able to succeed. He even pulled some strings for me because I was moving right after term finished and so ordinarily wouldn't be able to get my project back, so he personally contacted the examination board to tweak the rules for me so I could take it home.
My high school IT teacher, Mr Sharp, who initially sparked my interest for computing by changing it from the dull-sounding thing it did to something I'd like to do for my career (and I'm now studying Applied Computing at university)
Then 2 of my lecturers; Paul Tanner and Robin Tankard, the former who always goes out his way to make sure the class are understanding the course, and does what he can to help us out, and the latter who teaches with an exceptional passion that makes the courses he teaches fascinating regardless of subject matter by drawing on his own experiences, and maintains his analogies even across lessons so we don't get confused with what his point is.
In the very rare chance any of you read this, thank you

My parents are both teachers. Some teachers are 'bad' because they get payed fuck all, so don't feel like they should have to try hard in lessons or mark homework etc. Some because they're suffering from some sort of mental health illness due to teaching being one of the hardest and most stressful jobs in the world. They feel like shit the whole time, and find it hard to do a good lesson. Some teachers may struggle because it is one of the hardest jobs in the world. I mean seriously you try getting 30+ kids to be engaged and on task for an hour, whilst also making a lesson valuable to them and fun. You can't blame teachers, the education system is fucked, and it will only get worse due to the further cuts to education. This means lower salaries to the already awful salary, plus larger class sizes, meaning more stress for teachers and the students will learn less.

My mum was a teacher but she’s now at home raising the little ones. One day while I was at school I heard some lads in my class being very rude and then saying disrespectful stuff right to my teachers face. She took it as if it was nothing which shocked me so I stood up and shouted at the top of my voice at those bastards(this is pretty much exactly what I said):
“How dare you disrespect her! She works damn hard for your sake, staying up until the wee hours of the morning just for your education, just to be paid far too less than she deserves! She does this job so you can have a future. If you think that that is anything less than amazing then you should be thrown out of this class and you’ll damn deserve it if you don’t succeed! And if you do then you should thank her.”
Because of my mum being a teacher I’m passionate that every last one should be respected. And in all honesty, if I caught someone disrespecting my mum I would have probably killed them.

This is so true now as well. In this unprecedented time, teachers are working harder than normal to look after vulnerable and key worker children. I know of one head who's had parents shout at them that they need to look after kids when they don't qualify. But there's also a huge amount of logistics to work out with these vulnerable children and families. Helping them to get their free school meal vouchers, sending round worksheets and packs for those without Internet access, and pastorally looking out for families they're worried about, are just some of the extra things these amazing individuals are having to do. The stress on them is immense at the moment, especially with getting used to a new way of working when we've had no time to prepare for it. Teachers have and always will be incredible and deserve a load of praise, then and now.

Both my parents are teachers and honestly, the stress of the job nearly tore my family apart. My dad suffers from really bad depression that has a massive impact on everyone in the family, that was caused by his job. My mum has had 3 different long periods of time off of work bc of stress and now has quit teaching all together. Also, the amount of times my parents buy essential supplies for their classes is unreal. My dad is history teacher and often has to buy £35 textbooks out of his own pocket, only to have students ruin them bc they want to. Basically, be kind to your teachers; most of them sacrifice more than you can know just to teach you.

My mum is a cover teacher and she practically gets bullied even though she tries so hard. Cover teaching is one of the hardest teaching jobs out there because you're assigned a random class and random subject and given minimal information and yet they're expected to somehow teach the class. I think people forget that teachers are human too! :(

    • @camerondon3712

Whenever we had a cover teacher, as little as they knew of the topic of the class they were covering, we were given revision that we often did in silence only broken when someone asked to go to the toilet (often myself). The teacher was almost always Mrs. Knox - no one ever liked her, but when she was covering she always expected silence to which most of us had obliged. Only one class she covered didn't, as far as I'm aware, and I know because I was in that class. It was S3-S4 English, which she could teach, being an English teacher. I was probably the only one who actually tried to get their work done, because I wanted to get it done. My friend Kieran always broke the silence by talking to - often arguing with - Mrs. Knox. Then the rest of us joined in. I still tried getting my work done, but still intervened when necessary. But I was never disrespectful to her, because she was a teacher. As little as I liked her, I did still respect her authority as the teacher, because I was one of the best pupils in my year at the time (still am, if not in quality of work then in determined will to see it done). While some people in my year disrespected Mrs. Knox, about half of the year did as were asked or given by her when the actual teacher was off. I'm honestly glad to know that I was never disrespectful to her.

That applies to myself with my physics teacher in High school. He is by far my favourite teacher, but I left high school not long ago. But with the understanding of N5 level physics that he gave me, I intend to sit an engineering course in college as a stepping stone to physics in university (for some reason, the college I hope to get into doesn't have a physics course, but I do enjoy practical courses like engineering). I thank Mr. Mackenzie for helping me with physics, and not only because he is a good teacher but because he's funny and fully understands the issues I can have with the course (as much as I love physics, I'm hardly the best at the course. I still have to sit higher level). My brother knows just how good a teacher Mr. Mackenzie is, because he sat higher level physics and passed with a C (I can only imagine). And even though I myself am not the best at the course, somehow I got a Binthe prelim that I didn't expect in the slightest. I expected a C, like I got the year before. That B that I got as a result of Mr. Mackenzie's tutelage is a miracle, and one I don't forsake. He is my favourite teacher, and under his teaching I could (and hope to) get the qualifications I need for university level physics. It makes me sad that I no longer have him as a teacher, nor ever will again.
Honestly, writing this almost put me in tears. I love Mr. Mackenzie, and I would love to have him as a teacher again, but I know I can't. This upsets me so much.

I think it's disgusting to see how little respect teachers are given these days, and this is coming from someone who has only just finished sixth from and started uni.
All I heard at school was students complaining about teachers either because they didn't like them or because they didn't think they were good at their job. Do you realise how fucking hard it is to teach a class of students, where the majority of students would rather be somewhere else and are completely uninterested in what you are trying to teach. And no it's not the teachers fault for teaching boring things, when they are being forced to teach what the curriculum tells them to, purely for the purpose of passing an exam. Not to mention their salary is just getting shitter and shitter. Plus a lot of the time teachers aren't even allowed to focus their time on teaching, as they are spending disgusting numbers of hours marking and doing admin.
Then there is the depressing social stigma around becoming a teacher. With rising academic demands and the when government only deems becoming a bank manager, engineer or a CEO an acceptable career path, teachers are left as being seen as the people who failed at some point in their lives. People are brought up to believe that all teachers are, are failed academics.
I'm sorry but I doubt any of you would have any motivation to teach students under the current circumstances teachers have to work in.

    • @theamazedmaze4826

He stays behind after every tutor period to make sure that certain student were OK and that their home life was the way it should be. whenever a student was looking sad or anxious or in any way negative he would always keep them behind to talk to them and fix whatever the problem was. You get good and bad everywhere, in every profession.
But you also have to bear in mind that sometimes what you view as “disrespect” may just be them having a really bad time of it. Students don’t see what goes on outside the classroom, or consider the cumulative effect of whatever mayhem may regularly be occurring *in* them.
I’ve been teaching for a long time and have seen many of my colleagues have nervous breakdowns as a result of pressure from the workload and bullying from the students over a period of years. (Yes, it’s bullying if a group of 30 teens consistently harass, belittle, name-call, attack and generally disrespect a teacher.)
In those circumstances, the teacher might be rude or unreasonable or angry because they’re running on empty.
The same way that a student will sometimes misbehave because of problems at home, or with health, etc; an adult can act out of character, too.
We all (students and teachers alike) just need to remember that we never see all sides of the story, and just try to be kind regardless.

As a kid I had 2 amazing teachers. One was my year 6 teacher, she was so kind and loving. When I was in hospital after having a pretty big op (and then at home for over a month) she kept me up to date with what the class were doing and sent a care package home filled with some schoolwork, cards from the class and teachers and just general bits to cheer a kid up. I’ll never forget her. Then my music teacher in secondary school. He treated me like an individual and always supported me. He would let me down music even when it was closed for everyone (because I wasn’t good with crowds aka the canteen) and even during some lessons if I was having bit of a breakdown. Now I’m training as a teacher to have the same impact.

Do you guys honestly think this is a issue about how good a teacher is? Think a bit deeper.
Teaching is becoming an increasingly difficult job because schools are understaffed (due to crap pay). More teachers then leave because it's hard to take on such a workload. Overworked teachers then perform badly and lose the respect of teachers and parents.
Solution: Spend less government money on bombing children and more on teaching them.
Question: But why is this course of action not being taken?
