If you are new to BJJ, this video will get you familiar with the primary positions in Jiu Jitsu. BJJ can be daunting to learn due to the sheer number of techniques. The best way to learn a new skill is to start with the broad strokes, so you have a basic, general understanding of what is possible. We cover the five primary positions of BJJ both offensively and defensively. After watching this video you'll have a pretty good understanding of the basic game. Enjoy!
First I would like to say I really like your approach to BJJ and life in general through your videos. My academy was zooming on May 15th with our founder Mauricio Tinguinha and guest Jeremy Arel. The discussion was about BJJ learning systems. One of Jeremy's points was the lack of consistent terminology across BJJ. I know there are thousands of positions, attacks, counters, etc but it would be awesome if a universal name was associated with each movement. I am not the man for the job but after following you for the past few months I believe you may be that person. I know many already have names but take side control for example. Side control for one school may be knees up and tight where the next may be single or double leg sprawl. Then you also have numerous arm positions when in side control. Not sure if this is even possible but was just thinking out loud. Brain bending rant over. Thanks
This is what I've been searching for ever since I started jujitsu a few months back and I have to say that no one on youtube has explained the basics better. You make sure to capture all the angles and you move slowly step by step. Thank you immensely for your hard work and dedication!
Thank you Sir. I’ll be 68 years old next month. I’ve always wanted to learn some type of martial arts, but I know once I’m committed it’s no turning back. I’ve been retired now from the Marine Corps since 1994 and County Government at San Diego. I do have some different disabilities that over the years they have become a hinder to deal with but I deal with it. Is 68 years of age too old? Thanks again Sir.
If you’re at all new to BJJ, then let this video be the North Star in your BJJ journey. All of Rick’s videos are great, but this one really stands out to me. I’ve watched countless hours of beginner BJJ content and nothing is as concise and informative at this piece. Very well done, Rick. Thank you for the time and extra effort involved in creating this stuff. It’s a huge help to us BJJ knowledge seekers. Deeply appreciated, Kyle
I also love how the student flows with the demonstrations, allowing Rick to execute the moves by the book. As I get started, I love to work with people like this, helping each other accumulate slow, meaningful reps as we build smoothness and muscle memory. If I had my way, I'd work a new move thousands of times at this pace, or even slower to start, until it is perfect. So much more effective than rushing into trying to muscle each other or "win." Maybe one day we'll have an AI-robot that will practice moves with us on repeat hahaha
The fact that this is free is insane. I recently started training and I try to watch this before bed every night and I get to BJJ class early and watch it in my truck before going in. While knowing it and applying it are are totally different, I find that even in a half-hour video, just picking one small move or technique each time I view is so worth it!
even me, decided to watch it once every day, so it becomes muscle memory, and while applying it is a whole different story, haveing this in mind is a great way to navigating jiu jitsu
definitly, the sweeps not so much as thier more difficult to execute, but the submissions and positions from top position works very well@@user-uc9fx4ru7p
Yup, this type of content is awesome to beginners. When I began, I used to read everyday the "Fabio Gurgel - Basic Techniques" book about simple positions in Jiu Jitsu. This helped me to evolve a lot faster than I would, since everytime my sensei taught me something I already had at least a knowledge about what that meant to be
This has quickly become my go to checklist as I work my way through the maze that is Jiu Jitsu- thank you for taking the time and effort to put together such a succinct and learnable video.
My ONLY regret about this instructional video is not to have it seen it before. Now for me is like a bible under the arm. Every where I go I have it with me. thank you for this detail and easy mode to understand the techniques. You posted the title for "Newbies" but I believe this is a go to see video at any level to keep you sharp. Osss
I'm 51 and have just begun my BJJ journey with my two kids: 11 and 13. I've gone through a lot of BJJ videos on YT, but this is the one I've found most concise and resourceful. Thank you for preparing this goldmine of fundamentals and making it available to newbies like us!
Hi Jalapablo: How true! Me too, just started at the age of 48 with my son and my daughter's boyfriend. Like you, I too find this video amazing: practical, doable, and game chnager for beginners! Good luck with your journey!
This is such a simple, but effective presentation style. So many great practitioners spend time explaining, then executing the technique, or stopping and starting as they show and explain. This format, showing the techniques two or three times while explaining what is happening in a voice-over is far better. Perhaps it is better to stay with more granular, lengthy expositions for the advanced techniques and innovations, but as an introduction to BJJ this takes some beating. I look forward to seeing more.
SPECTACULAR I was a somewhat advanced white belt in 1995 (consistent 18 months of BJJ) and had to quit due to work commitments. Got quite depressed as I thought I had forgotten everything I knew - but your EXCELLENT demonstrations brought everything back and showed me the knowledge was still somewhere in my head all this time. Thanks Rick!!!
43 years old, second class tonight. Been spending a LOT of time on the BJJ UA-cam rabbit hole. This might be the most practically informative video I've seen yet. And def. one of my favorite BJJ channels so far.
Enjoyed this instruction very much! I just started BJJ training 3 weeks ago. My 60th birthday is next week. I did wrestle in middle and a bit in high school. I did a tiny bit in college, but it wasn't on mats and there was no referees. I am a chiropractor, so I jokingly say that I wrestle people for a living. I have no plans to compete, but I would like to one day have my own BJJ gym. First chance I get, I would like to drive up to Laramie and see your place, it looks great!
6-month white belt here. I studied this video once a week right before open mat. I competed in a tournament last month and got an Americana from Kesa gatame (twice!). This truly is a great roadmap in getting your fundamentals down. Thank you Rick, for making and sharing this with the BJJ community.
Can't thank you enough for this. Had my first bjj class yesterday and I was left scratching my head during drills since I didn't know what the positions were called and had no idea what I should be working towards while in any given position. This has demystified so much for me, will be returning to it a lot over the coming months I'm sure. As you said, now that I know what is possible learning will be far easier.
One of the best and well done videos I’ve seen in a while. I spend a lot of time on UA-cam trying to learn, I loved the pace of the video, the editing was well done and I love your calm and detailed view of the many options. I look forward to seeing some more expansive detail on some of the individual videos. Very well done. Please do more!!
Amazing job of simplifying basic Positions with techniques Professor Ellis , and much Credit to your Professor Dean and his Professor Harris for passing along this level of technique with simplicity. It’s finally starting to click for me after 7 years of working on it at age 57 , Thanks Rick!
This is exactly the kind of video I needed. The demonstrations are the clearest I've seen so far, the camera angles are chosen perfectly to show all the little details, and the black and white gis on white mats make everything so easy to parse. The video is also comprehensive enough for a beginner to start rolling. I'm rewatching it for the third time now to get ready for my next session. Thank you!
Out of everything I have watched, this is by far the most accurate and superior video I’ve ever seen!! I’ve been through everything I could possibly watch, and this video for the editing and details explained are incredible! Absolutely thankful! Please do not delete! 🥋🤙🏼
What a fantastic video! The multiple camera shots and voice over is exceptionally well done! This video must have taken you a hundred+ hours to edit! Thank you so much for making it.
I've had this video saved to watch later since sround the time it was released. Now, two years into training, watching this video is most helpful and enjoyable for me.
I love to come back to this video, been training for 3 years now and i still watch this one 😂😂 i remember watching this when you fist made it and now my game has evolved massively
This is amazing stuff. Started my journey in BJJ as a white belt about 3 months ago, and I am a bit confused about what to do / how to transition to better ideas / get a better position, etc. This was really helpful in tailoring some overall plan when I roll, so I can think and strive for the logical next steps. Thanks a lot, man! OSU !!
I just started my jiujitsu journey, January 2024 at 49. Absolutely love it. This video is is exactly what I needed. Thank you for your time and wisdom, very much appreciated.
Every time I come back to this video during my bjj journey I can appreciate it on a deeper level. Literally all u need in one. By FAR the best fundamental bjj videos on youtube
The most comprehensive video I’ve been able to find on what you need to know as a newbie. Superb video with tons of great info. You are a natural born teacher. All your videos are full of very wise information, your demonstrations of techniques are brilliant and your movement is so crisp and fluid. Can’t praise this video in particular enough.
This video is an excellent source of information and a quick reference for beginners and even blue belts I would say. I watch it every now and then as a reminder! Small correction, omoplata doesnt mean shoulder, but shoulder blade, shoulder in Portuguese is ombro.
Thank you so much for taking the time to create this video. 3 classes in and I was already frustrated because I didn’t understand certain terms and concepts.
Thank you. I've only just started and am struggling to retain all the information. Step-by-step tutorials like this that I can keep rewatching are a great help.
Thank you. Love the haunting piano music that coincides with the images. What that Daniher dude calls "the dark art of strangulation." I can't wait to be good enough to pull some of them off.
I simply want to say that the wealth of knowledge being shared here is incredible. I have instructional DVDs, which I paid money for, with less technical material than what is showcased here. Chris, thanks you so much for sharing your knowledge and passion through this video and many others you've made. You're incredible! This is literally the new white belt bible, excellent work.
AWESOME Thanks for posting this gem. A wonderful, true foundation information video that belongs in the library of all students of Martial art and sports
Excellent class. Very good video for those who are beginning in the art, congratulations. Shoulder means "ombro" in portuguese. Actually omoplata is the bone that connects the upper arm bone to the collar bone (scapula)
Attending my second class this evening. UA-cam is a source of both good and poor content on BJJ. This video stands out like a diamond in the rough. Will be referring back to it as I slowly progress in this art.
I'm 73 and have been doing BJJ for just short of 2 months. Thirty three training days thus far. I have lots of injuries from other sports, martial arts, military accidents. I'm hoping I get the mobility back in my back, hips and legs to do these maneuvers.
Well done and thank you so much! I’ve been training for 1.5 years and I love watching the basics because that’s what I’m focusing on and this video can’t get any better. This is an absolute must watch. Instead of showing isolated moves with focus on extreme details this gives an overview of the whole framework of Jiu Jitsu, which I desperately needed. Im finally starting to see how all the pieces connect.
I just got my blue belt two weeks ago today. I watched this early and it made sense, but now that I'm watching it again, I pick up on a lot I missed. Absolutely respect and admiration for being able to articulate it and show it so well.
This video is a GOLD TREASURE. I have been watching instructional BJJ videos and, I can say that there is no other video like this one or instructor like Rick Ellis in UA-cam. Rick has a gift in teaching. With just a little more than two months practicing JJ, I will be watching this video many many times from now on. Thanks Rick #TheArtofSkill.
Nicely done video- especially with the different camera angles and concise narration. Thank you for sharing with us BJJ noobs your decades of knowledge and experience. I'll watch this and other Art of Skill videos after class as I sit down with an IPA in hand. Great instructional video that clearly lays out the foundations of BJJ. Much obliged.
I've been training for eight months, and definitely don't consider myself a complete newbie at this point, but I thought I'd check this video out. I'm only 1/3 through it and I've already learned quite a few ideas. Love it!
This video is amazing. THANK YOU for making it. I have sent it to 5 of my friends who all tried bjj, 2 of them are sticking with it. I still learn stuff from this video and I'm 3 years in.

Awesome. Jiu-Jitsu in 34 minutes! Wish I had this years ago
Same for me.
51 years old, one class into my BJJ journey, and just found this video... bring on the second class!
Same situation man, I'm just 26 years younger haha
This was great! I wish I had it explained this clearly as a white belt. Would've made so much of a difference knowing why I was doing certain moves!

I’m on a similar journey as you are only starting later in life on both.
4 weeks ago at 49! Love reading more stories of others starting older! Recovery time sure is something to get used to haha!!

Nice fundamentals video, and loved the Dark Souls style background music.

This video is purely awesome! I just started JJ (2 weaks in) and bust my toe, so i got 20 days off. This really helps to not rust much
just put some tape on it, its just a toe :)

As a white belt, relatively new to bjj, and unable to attempt beginners class, this is very helpful. Thanks 🙏
This video is by far one of the very best videos that I have seen on BJJ! The soft piano music was also a nice touch.
What a fantastic video! The multiple camera shots and voice over is exceptionally well done! This video must have taken you a hundred+ hours to edit! Thank you so much for making it.
It was definitely time consuming! Glad you liked it.
I'm 59 years old, and this is my go to video. Thanks Rick
I've had this video saved to watch later since sround the time it was released. Now, two years into training, watching this video is most helpful and enjoyable for me.

This is the best and easiest guide to digest on the internet. Thank you for your work coach!
Clear, Concise, and Straight to the Point. Roy Dean has made this into an Art a very Beautiful Art.
This is the most complete beginner video i ever seen. Great video. Clearly explained.

A gem amongst the plethora of great content on YT. And v grateful you guys wore diff coloured gi’s. Makes a huge difference. Thank you for sharing 🇦🇺
This stuff is more than enough for a year’s worth of learning.
Simply great!
I cannot believe this is free to watch. Thank you.
One of the most beautifully crafted BJJ vids for white belts that have an appreciation for the fine arts as well as the martial. 🙏✌️🌹
A beautiful dance, love the arm bar using one arm.
AWESOME
Thanks for posting this gem. A wonderful, true foundation information video that belongs in the library of all students of Martial art and sports
Unbelievable treasure of techniques.
This is pure basics with some cool stuff like de la riva and lasso, ideal for new guys. Thumbs up!
I am amazed this is free. The quality and effort put into the teaching is very impressive. Thank you so much.s
Excellent class. Very good video for those who are beginning in the art, congratulations. Shoulder means "ombro" in portuguese. Actually omoplata is the bone that connects the upper arm bone to the collar bone (scapula)
Hands down THE best beginner guide on UA-cam, gets my vote EVERY time!!!! OSS.
This is literally the perfect teaching video. So much information with basically zero extraneous waffle.
I've benefited and took inspiration from Mr Ellis as i've reached my 40's. This is an amazing instructional video.
Attending my second class this evening. UA-cam is a source of both good and poor content on BJJ. This video stands out like a diamond in the rough. Will be referring back to it as I slowly progress in this art.
Super comprehensive. I like that this video showed not only the individual concepts and techniques, but how to lead up to them and escape from them.
It’s very helpful to see how you can move from one submission attempt to another. Thank you
I am not a newbie, not after 3 years of training, but I will come back to this video , and closely watch it, many more times. Thank you professor.🙏
I’m brand new to BJJ… great video, very clear.
I'm 73 and have been doing BJJ for just short of 2 months. Thirty three training days thus far. I have lots of injuries from other sports, martial arts, military accidents. I'm hoping I get the mobility back in my back, hips and legs to do these maneuvers.
Awesome video!!! Thanks!! You cleared up lots of doubts.
Well done and thank you so much! I’ve been training for 1.5 years and I love watching the basics because that’s what I’m focusing on and this video can’t get any better. We have a curriculum that we follow and it’s almost the exact same basic moves shown in this video. I love your videos and this is certainly my favourite UA-cam video now Oss!!!
This is the most valuable video for white belts that I've seen so far! Thanks a ton for sharing!
Thanks Rick #TheArtofSkill.
hell of a video. The type to rewind multiple times. Almost Encyclopedic.
New months into BJJ. Broken rib as well. This was due my ego. At 48y love it. This video is great help.
Thank you for your hard work in producing something of such a good quality and sharing it with us.
Your movement is smooth and beautiful Rick. Thank you for your sharing. 💪
I think this is the best BJJ instructional video that I have found until now. Thank you very much!
The BEST BJJ video for whites/blues I´ve ever seen
Wow! I’ll be back to this video a million times
Thank you so much
Thank you for putting this together, very clear and easy to understand.
This is such a good video! Your voice and even the music 🎶 helps me concentrate. Well done and nicely explained and the pacing was perfect. Thanks!
I've been training for eight months, and definitely don't consider myself a complete newbie at this point, but I thought I'd check this video out. I'm only 1/3 through it and I've already learned quite a few ideas. Love it!
Great video. Spending a lot of time re-watching different parts of this.
That was awesome. So we’ll done, great relaxing flow-y music too.
Perfect video
This video is amazing. THANK YOU for making it. I have sent it to 5 of my friends who all tried bjj, 2 of them are sticking with it. I still learn stuff from this video and I'm 3 years in.
Wow, this is pure gold, thank you! Keep the vids coming i cant get enough
This is the best entry level tutorial I have seen by far. Love the slowed down steps in every move. Thank you so much
Thank you, Joe.
Seriously one of best Newbie videos fo BJJ on UA-cam. Thank you 💜
Amazing quality video, so useful for a total beginner. Also a bonus that Jean Luc Picard is the teacher 😁
