I love that you point out how the grips are so essential to the battle and highlight them in your exchanges. I'm just wondering how you go about teaching which grips are advisable and which are not? I notice that when they get good grips often you just adapt and move into the "counter move" (which is great for us to learn from!) and when they have bad grips you pass freely. So from the white belt perspective (in the roll), All of their grips would really just feel bad? Hopefully that makes sense.
The grips you take are dependent on the technique you want to pull off and vice versa. Think about grips needed for a specific pass. Those are grips you should take to achieve that pass. A lot of times people just grab randomly and think about the technique after. It's a tough question to answer because everything is so situational.

Jordan, I had my first (no-gi) BJJ class today. I'm happy to say that I prevented several arm bars by using the T-Rex arms you're so adamant about! I made sure to tell my rolling partners that it was my first day, and that I'd prefer defending. It worked out beautifully, and a much more advanced guy even opted to flow with me :) My knees are all bruised up and my shoulder is a bit sore; I'm super excited to go back tomorrow for another session! As soon as you feel you're losing position (your guard) let go. Your likely waiting until they're already passed your legs to let go but by then theyve got it trapped already.

I just had my jiu jitsu competition in Tucson AZ! (Posted both matches on my UA-cam) Lost in the finals but I had so much fun, that match is posted too. I have a lot to improve and work on but that’s the game!
Hi Jordan, so to piggyback off the White Belt Jesse competition match you published 3/4. This video is also really good…technical Black Belt vs White Belt, pointing out defense and offensive problems, and how his errors lead to bigger issues. Question do you feel or notice some people accept the role their belt around their waist is? Like a limiting belief…I’m a white belt going against a black belt…what can I do??? I do like that you gave them a chance to make better choices? 🤜
Hey man, thanks for the comment 🙏 And I think I get what you mean. Just try to give your best - don't give up. Most black belts (and higher belts in general, purple and above) will give you space to work. Take advantage of that and don't feel "shy" to take the chances. That's the point. And it's the way both you and the higher belt will improve. 🙂
Can you make a common blue belt mistakes video? Or like an "intermediate" grappler mistakes? I'm trying to see what I can do to bridge the gap to purple and up. Love the videos man.
I absolutely love your videos! I study the hell out of them. Being a white belt and a small dude (5'4 and 165lbs) I get smashed ALOT and sometimes want to tap from brutal top pressure or just being smothered with the dudes gi Any suggestions?
I've had exactly 2 classes so far as a brand new white belt, and so far I've fallen victim (to the same blue belt) to a rear collar choke once and one armbar. Both started from when I started getting impatient; the armbar from when he had me in mount, and the collar choke from when he had me in side control and my shrimping skills were not adequate to make enough space to escape.
Amazing videos as usual. I get caught in front headlock position all the time and I'm soo busy defending the guillotine that I end up stalling and not knowing what to do. I'd love that to be in some of your future videos, thanks!
Great content! I also wonder, how is looking your strength work-out? Do you train with weights or bodyweight? Or both? If, so, what exercises do you prioritise? Greetings from Poland!
surely the young man was shown how to do better, by the coach, I am also still a beginner and I believe by making mistakes you learn and a fight is won not only in theory but through practice - very good video and the coach was very respectful of the beginner. Class - Greats from Germany

But Im still gaining my overall strength and i hardly get submissions but I make it very very hard for them to submit me
More great content. Love these vids, mate. Really useful stuff.
I definitely had to learn the hard way with armbars but now i have a few defenses in the bag just in case. I'm super lanky so have a lot of arm to attack. Keep up the great vids and, Glenn, keep going, you'll make some great progress with Jordan coaching you 🤙👊

Glen. I’ve been the Glen before lol! But what an amazing black belt to have with you! Taking care of you injury wise and training you
They always pair me with blue belts. Only one has tried to inflict pain on me my 2nd class. I’ve been to 5 classes now.
Life is indeed tiring man. Kudos for teaching us in spite of all your other responsibilities
👊
I appreciate your format, reminds me of Keenans prior content. I also just watched you and J Chan doing MMA. Do you have more ideas for that, you looked good.
I just had my jiu jitsu competition in Tucson AZ! (Posted both matches on my UA-cam)
Lost in the finals but I had so much fun, that match is posted too. I have a lot to improve and work on but that’s the game!
Love your instructions. So clear for greenhorns like me !! Thx!!

Been catching myself thinking if my opponents grips are stopping me from doing what I want to do! It really helps!

Wow this is awesome! One of my common mistake, I always go for the collar grip

Just got my blue. I used to reach so much, was armbar wonderland rolling with me.
Can you make this a series? It is very helpfull. Great video!
It is already :)
Can you make a common blue belt mistakes video? Or like an "intermediate" grappler mistakes? I'm trying to see what I can do to bridge the gap to purple and up. Love the videos man.
Thanks man! Funny you mention that as a blue belt mistakes commentary is this week's video. Should be out Saturday 🙂

Really thankful for this video. I love putting in the work and learning but I learn well watching others so this was great.
I absolutely love your videos! I study the hell out of them. Being a white belt and a small dude (5'4 and 165lbs) I get smashed ALOT and sometimes want to tap from brutal top pressure or just being smothered with the dudes gi
Any suggestions?

Excellent work Jordan! Keep it up!
Best BJJ videos on youtube by far. How come you dont recommend to start rolling from the knees? I see it a lot at different gyms that I have visited.
I still feel like glen after 8 months lol
omg- i like the rotational escape you do here 7:00
I've had exactly 2 classes so far as a brand new white belt, and so far I've fallen victim (to the same blue belt) to a rear collar choke once and one armbar.
Do you have any videos about defending from someone taking your back? As a white belt, it seems to be one of my biggest struggles.
Should bring Glen back if he hasn’t quit..prob looks much better by now 🥋🙏🏼
Great video! Usually when I go fo rolling back attacks, I get caught in a knee bar
Love the content, it's helping a lot Jordan. Working towards improving every session! I'm constantly caught in arm bars so i need to work on those T-Rex arms. Thanks again :D
