I always take notes when I am learning from Rick's videos, so I'd love to share them with you all: Tip 5 - 0:58 --> Utilise your legs in conjunction with your arms • Numerous ways to use your legs e.g. pinching, creating a fulcrum, pulling, pushing etc • Advanced players use their legs extensively • If uke does a kneecut, pinch with your knees to trap his knee --> keeping him at bay • Ultimately, you want to use your legs to create connections Tip 4 - 2:55 --> Hip escapes • It's not just about the technique, it's about when you do it • Hip escapes come in when uke gets past your knees • You want to develop the intuition to immediately hip escape aggressively as soon as they get past your kneecaps, don't let them anchor their weight onto you Tip 3 - 4:30 --> Hide your arms • Tuck in your arms whenever you can --> prevents underhooks, crossfaces and denies opportunities of uke gaining control of you • Extremely valuable when you are in bad positions e.g. your back is taken, your guard's getting passed • This causes your opponent to expend more energy Tip 2 - 6:27 --> Learn to bridge • Roy Harris once said: this is one of the unstoppable moves in BJJ • The key to escaping side control is having a strong bridge • Find a heavy partner and have them hold you down with side control: 1. Start with your frame: forearm against chin 2. Feet close to butt, be on the balls of your feet 3. Bridge forcefully 4. Use this to gauge how strong your bridge is Tip 1 - 9:29 --> Focus on control, NOT the submission • Typically people lose their positions when they are attempting to transition or do a submission (you create too much space) • Instead, focus on control • Realistically, aim to focus on maintaining the position from white to blue belt. Submissions are more reliable when you have positional dominance (typically attained at purple belt) • Your degree of control over your opponent's movement options affects your submission rate" Rick's motto: POSITIONAL DOMINANCE BEFORE SUBMISSION
Nice, thanks for that. I noticed when he had the frame under his chin in side control, he also had his hand on his shoulder, presumably to help relieve the shoulder pressure?
This is so clear and foundational. Valuable for any level. Focus on control: When I watch elite black belts rolling, it is 95% about control. Submissions rarely happen. But 95% of videos focus on submissions! What is great about this video is that it is all about control and body mechanics. We need more of that.
Loving your videos! I’m a 53 yr old stuck in quarantine in UK & your content is keeping me sane & my BJJ cogs turning 😅. Started BJJ the week of my 51st birthday with the Pedro Bessa academy in Bristol, England & haven’t looked back. If I ever make it out to Colorado would love to come and train with you guys 👍🏼👍🏼
Am in the UK and the same age also I started with Roger Gracie Academy in London 2019 I have no regrets I love it locked down disrupted training but happy to have re started training keep the training and have fun 👍🏾
Honestly this is gold. Been doing BJJ for almost 2 months now and each and every one of these tips have helped me tremendously. Thanks 🙏 for a great video!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for letting us know, even at blue belt to mainly focus on holding positions. As a 45 year old, overweight, brand new blue belt...that was encouraging to hear
Thank you coming from a white belt with 1 stripe 5 x a week open mat is fantastic training with.my son R.G.A bjj south herts Thank you & appreciate your videos. Regards Ray
Great advice from a master. Fundamentals that can be applied to any level. Never thought about the focus on control. It is very useful. When the opponent tries to escape control, opportunities open up. Also great idea about the alarm bell at the knee level.
Hello, greetings from Colombia. It is a pleasure to follow him on social networks and UA-cam. This video came at a special time in my life and in bjj practice. I am 41 years old and 6 months ago I managed to obtain my blue belt. I have had certain feelings of frustration and I have felt lost. But this video came as if from the sky and clarified many things and redirected my way of training. Thank you very much and my respect to you and your teachers. I hope you can continue providing this type of advice to those of us who are starting out in the world of bjj.
I found your Channel just recently and I appreciate the value you provide, your explanations are clear and straight to the point, thanks for the time you put on these videos, I'm looking forward to learn more from you.
Very much the Roy Dean style of principles over techniques from what I see. Great content, helpful for those of us with basic ground game in other systems.
The keep the hands close it's probably the tip I used the most and has save me from so many losing positions, giving me time to think and weather the storm!
Brother you really help us tremendously I have 52 and I’m white bell 1 strap and my knee been a little sore but my mind set is to learn I don’t care if I get summited what I do care is learning and enjoy Jiu jitsu thank you for all this videos but definitely I want to improve my skills blessings 🙏
Great video. This guy is a good teacher. Defend yourself until the other guy gets tired. Never leave hips and shoulders flat on the floor - can't move and can't breathe.
Brilliant video I'm 44 white belt 3 stripes started 16 years ago with y friend he's a black belt 2 stripes now lol says a lot for consistency but hey I'm not giving up and videos like this make the journey a lot more pleasant thanks again
4 stripe purple here and I have started every roll from guard for the last AT LEAST 1.5 years and just recently realized how little I use my legs. Just in the last week I've used them more and the difference is night and day! I think a lot of people only use their legs to get back their guard not for control. Which leads me to control OMG THIS A GREAT POINT!!! CAN'T STRESS THIS ENOUGH. SO MANY lower belts I roll with I sweep JUST BECAUSE they are thinking submission first. SORRY for the long comments. ❤ this channel, always great advice!!!
For any beginners another tip that I found made my jui jitsu better right away was closing all the space between my opponent and I, aswell as always thinking of ways I can maintain pressure at all times👍
Greeting from Australia. Your videos are excellent, and i have learnt from them; I do not agree with some of your views about old age, but you are an excellent instructor and your videos stick to the point clearly showing the moves concisely without too many words, Excellent!🙏
Great video that helps a lot I just wonder about 1.Focus on Control as a beginner of Bjj if I'm in some control position should I just stay there or practice to transit to other position?? My coach often tell me to do something instead of just staying there
I’d say it depends on the objective, context, and level of ability. For example, on a point-based comp I’d probably want to stay on my opponent in mount rather than make myself vulnerable going for a sub that isn’t there or that I can’t get swiftly
Dang, this is all really good but that last one is a revelation! Work on maintaining and controlling position before trying to master submissions. Notice how people are escaping you and shore up those weaknesses. So good.
Sir your videos have been very helpful to me. You make those concepts so easy to understand. Btw is your academy in the pacific northwest by any chance?
Some really helpful tips here. Thank you. As a side note (with regards to focusing on control), I think that should include controlling your breathing. As a white belt its something I have to try and keep reminding myself so I don’t gas out too quickly when doing roll after roll with different people during a session.

Nice one mate
Awesome! Thanks
Nice, thanks for that. I noticed when he had the frame under his chin in side control, he also had his hand on his shoulder, presumably to help relieve the shoulder pressure?
Thanks homie
I think his name is Jordan... not uke
Thank you! These are good 5 tips!
5. Use your legs.
4. Hip escape.
3. Hide your arms.
2. Learn to bridge.
1. Focus on control.
This is solid gold fundamentals.
I’m a 49 yr purple belt.
first time back since opening after pandemic, got seriously humbled.
I needed this.
This is definitely my new favorite channel. As a 38 year old new BJJ practitioner this channel is so valuable
My newest favorite channel. Thank you for your content. As a 40 year old out of shape white belt, this is exactly what I need.
Same here, brother!
Also formerly owned a lawn maintenance business... and people also call me jay 🤔
Same here my man lol
I thought I was the only one. Happy to hear there are other older beginners 😁
How you train during the pandemic ? In my case, I stopped training 😣

Excellent tips and beautiful to watch Father and son train together. Thank you Rick & Jordan Ellis.OSS

Splendid! Daghan Salamat sa Inyo! (Many Thanks for that) Multiplied Blessings & Many Thanks from Mindanao.
First off, Professor, I'd like to thank you for sharing this information. As a white belt, every bit of info I can get is gold!
YOU CAN NOT DENY THE BRIDGE; it is an unstoppable move in jiu jitsu.
Definitely the best quote from this video. Love it

55 and training under Duane Harper at Aire Valley Martial Arts in Keighley. Wish I'd had an earlier start..
Honestly this is gold. Been doing BJJ for almost 2 months now and each and every one of these tips have helped me tremendously. Thanks 🙏 for a great video!!
This helped A LOT. Indeed, at lower belts, I should focus on the control game, not the submission game... sometimes I lose that focus
Thank you, thank you, thank you for letting us know, even at blue belt to mainly focus on holding positions. As a 45 year old, overweight, brand new blue belt...that was encouraging to hear
Thank you coming from a white belt with 1 stripe
5 x a week open mat is fantastic training with.my son

Thank you & appreciate your videos.

This is extremely instructive for a beginner. As someone brand new to it I struggle knowing what to do and this goes a long way.
So much happy to have Ellis and @Jordan teaches jiujitsu
54 yr old white belt, learning and bruised, great content, position before submission makes so much sense to me now, survive first, awesome.
As a beginner is this type of content i do appreciate very much. Thank you!

I love it. The first one which speaks about principles witch showing 2 examples, and not a technical doctrin. More of this stuff
Very much the Roy Dean style of principles over techniques from what I see. Great content, helpful for those of us with basic ground game in other systems.
Short and to the point. Great video!
Love this channel!
The keep the hands close it's probably the tip I used the most and has save me from so many losing positions, giving me time to think and weather the storm!
Thank you for sharing. Very helpful. I been starting to use my legs and hooking when I roll now. Solid video 💪🏿🎯

Thank you so much, i had no hard time understanding this lesson and i never been in a jiu jitsu class before, you are a great coach indeed. New sub.
Years ago at a seminar Gustavo Froes told us to "do 63 hip escapes, if you do 63 hip escapes you should be clear." 😂❤
Great tips! Your uke cracked me up at the end 😂 he was glazing over while you're dropping dimes, #smh 😂
Loving the videos guys, found this channel recently and have been recommending it 👍

@SOSA I’ve spent all that time from guard to get my guard retention better, not because I’m pulling guard.
Excellent instruction and tips! Thank you! (50 years old BJJ mat ratt here)
Thanks for sharing this information with us ❤
Love your content please keep it up, you got a fan
