    I actually can't believe the Legiana and Tobi Kadachi bows were just honorable mentions. Is there a single monster in the entire game that isn't weak to one or both of those elements? And both bring a strong crowd control coating by default.

    • @PenguinMcDuck
      @PenguinMcDuck 6 років тому +30

      I agree. I have 3 bows: Kadachi, Rathslinger and Archer's Dance. Personally, I'd have 2 more bows - Legiana and a dragon-element bow - and that's all I ever need for anything (I don't need a Water bow, it's underwhelming at the moment).
      This list sounds like Arekkz's choice of bows for fighting elder dragons. I mean, I'd rather bring Kadachi Bow to fight two-thirds of the monsters in the game as they are not resistant or immune to Thunder (I counted). And the remaining one-third, I'd bring Rathslinger for the 20% affinity and marginally higher ATK. Legiana Bow and a dragon bow will practically complete the set for me to combat anything.
      I don't need 3 different bows with dragon element on them.
      Also, personally, I don't like blast element bows. The reason why I have Archer's Dance is because I tested a blast bow at one point, and by the end of several fights, I realized that I proc-ed blast 3 times. Then I used a blast DB and I proc-ced blast 9 times with it. I shelved Archer's Dance ever since; especially when Kadachi Bow out-DPS Archer's Dance.
      I know Arekkz said that "there's more to Monster Hunter than how much damage you can do"; but the best way to avoid getting carted is to kill the damn thing before it can one-shot you. I killed Tempered Kirin just like that, didn't use any status effects at all. I only see use in Status Effect Bows when you play in multiplayer where you can save your teammates a lot of hassle by paralyzing/sleeping the monster; the latter which you and your team can plant 8 mega barrel bombs and give the monster the rudest wake-up call ever. Otherwise, it's really just about how much damage you can do without getting carted.
      There is only more to Monster Hunter than how much damage you can do when you can survive a single hit, end of story. And that is why bow mains will always choose elemental bows over anything else. And also why we don't need 3 dragon element bows taking up 3 out of 5 slots in a top 5 bows list.
      On one good note though; this list does have Cera Coilbender, which is actually quite an interesting pick. Cera Coilbender is a bow that you will only use when you know you have a good chance at hitting a monster's weak spot all the time. Because trying to counteract its -30% affinity is near impossible if you're trying to do it by stacking Critical Eye. (Max Might doesn't work with bows.) In other words; Coilbender is very situational itself. But it has 2 gem slots and a hidden Ice element. I personally wouldn't put it in my top 5 but I can see why Arekkz placed it there. It also has +15 DEF; not overly amazing but can be a lifesaver for a defensive armor build. I just don't like the fact that when I finally get to put some shots at a monster's weak spot, there's only 20% chance to make better use of Coilbender's high ATK. Personally I'd prefer stacking elemental damage instead. (I spam arrows to charge rather than dodge to charge, because dodging to charge takes a chunk of stamina out. For arrow spamming, elemental damage is the way to go.)

      I hear ya! Looks like they only overlooked them. The marjority bows they presented aren't really useful in a real situation. Raw damage is not important in bow builds. I've discovered that even raw constitution isn't that good. I'm using constitution with Peak Performance effect wich besides low stamina consuption apply other usefull statuses. But, you know, that's their opinion

      I have flying kadachi strikebow. Insurgents bow (for elder dragons). Xeno metora (i dont really use it tbh). And a water bow i made for the single purpose of teostra. But it was still useless and deviljho dual swords did the job the water bow was meant to do a million times more effectively

      Its pretty simple boys R2 + O at the right time and you gonna dodge attack (it make a specific sound and your character gonan shy for a moment) then again R2 to counterstrike the enemy and if you do this in the right way you gonna get a power up (the blade colour... White yellow and red!)
      Asap you hit red your objective is to use R2+Triangle to do the suler ultra OP attack that push you into aur and then you come down and slam the enemy (spam R2 + triangle while midair to adjust the direction of the attack to your enemy)
      If you land the jump, EVEN IF U DONT HIT THE ENEMY, you gonna lose one powerup(blade color) but your blade bar (the one on top-left corner) gonna autofill so you can soam R2 and get back top Red power up and keep this chain attack and smash the enemy so fucking hard
      Then there are the old basic combo and stuffs like soamming triangle to full the blade bar then spam r2 untill you get a power up or doing like
      R2 triangl. R2 tringl 2r tringl r2 etc untill you get the power up

    the thing about diablos weapons and their low affinity is that if youre playing with something like full weakness exploit and attack lvl 7, then when youre attacking the monster's weakpoint (which you should be doing with a ranged weapon), then the affinity of each shot should be about 25%.

    • @PenguinMcDuck
      @PenguinMcDuck 6 років тому

      There are some monsters with small heads that move around all the time. Like Xeno'Jiiva; who doesn't exactly have a small head but its body is so huge that you tend to miss its head as it jerks around a lot, while firing laser beams at you. Or its body is so big that it blocks some of your shots from reaching its head. Also, sometimes, you have to run all the way to the front just to take pot shots at its head, before having to dodge its laser beams. And then it charges past you and you have to run a distance before taking pot shots at its head again. (Don't bother aiming for its tail, it's an even smaller target than its head.)
      It's just more effective to have no negative affinity and pepper monsters like that with arrows until they turn around to face you. And when you do hit their faces, it's at least 50% crit chance, and if you have crit boost, you actually do more damage than when you use Coilbender. On top of that, Flying Kadachi Strikebow has 15% affinity, effectively making that crit chance 65%, and if you stacked Crit Boost to max, it's 65% chance to do 140% damage, with elemental damage on top (and I believe Xeno is somewhat susceptible to Thunder).
      It's more or less the similar case for other bows.
      Cera Coilbender does have a hidden Ice element but one thing I don't like hidden elements about is that they need your precious gem slots (or armor slots) to unlock. Coilbender is only good when you have a matching armor set, otherwise you're better off with something else. Flying Kadachi Strikebow is a pick-up-and-use bow, and it only gets better when you have an armor set designed for it. (I actually use a cookie cutter armor set that gives me some Crit Boost, some Critical Eye, and maxed Weakness Exploit, to get Rathalos Mastery which gives extra elemental damage when I crit. I can literally swap to another elemental bow and it does more or less the same job, just against monsters resistant to Thunder but weak to whatever else...)

    • @WishMasterPtolemy
      @WishMasterPtolemy 5 років тому

      @@PenguinMcDuck Xeno front feet are also weakspots, much easier to hit - and the chest when it's enraged, does about equal damage to the head and it's a much larger target.

    • @PenguinMcDuck
      @PenguinMcDuck 5 років тому +1

      @@WishMasterPtolemy Xeno's front feet actually don't receive that much damage from ranged attacks compared to its tail and head, and chest when enraged. And Xeno's chest is a big and juicy target when it is enraged; but Xeno is enraged. It doesn't stay that way throughout the whole game, and it spews lasers almost everywhere when enraged.
      Bow users don't really have much problem against most monsters including Xeno but they do have to perform at close range, and as ranged weapons, they don't have the natural reduced-physical-damage-taken buff. Against Tempered monsters, they can get one-shotted even with 3 vitality jewels and 450 defense. On top of this, bows are very combo reliant to do damage.
      I tend to think of bows as close-range duelists, so they basically have to gear themselves specifically to counter specific enemies. Which is why the fact that none of the other elemental bows didn't make it to the Top 5 kind of bugs me.
      I counted all the monsters' elemental weaknesses, and apparently, only half of the monsters are resistant to (one star in Monster Field Guide) or immune to Thunder. The next element I believe is Ice; and then Dragon. Fire and Water take last spots. IIRC, even though there are more monsters immune to Fire than just being weak to it (compared with Water); Fire bows have the highest affinity rates whereas Water bows are a disappointment.
      So at the moment, I have 3 bows: Thunder (Tobi Kadachi), Ice (Legiana - mostly to fight fire-immunes), and Rathalos (Fire, to fight anything that resists or is immune to Thunder and Ice). I would use Anja Arch but I'd treat Anja Arch as a special fire bow for less than one-third of monsters...
      I haven't made a Dragon bow yet. Never really needed it. And lately I've swapped to LS because Foresight Slashing is more fun imo than peppering arrows...

    • @PenguinMcDuck
      @PenguinMcDuck 5 років тому

      Obviously, if something is weak to both Fire and Thunder, I'd use Rathalos Bow because of 20% more affinity... But most of the time, I use Tobi Kadachi as it has 15% affinity, not too shabby. And half the monsters aren't resistant to it so for general purpose, it's better IMO.
      I didn't min/max this game so I'm not actually bothered about EFR and stuff.

    • @skyllarrisen8791
      @skyllarrisen8791 6 років тому +13

      ye i agree with the top 2 even tho id put them in different order. however IMO none of the top 3-5 have any business being on this list over something like the anja arch III. it has the same raw attack as the doom's shaft, alot more element and can use a coating more. yes it has negative affinity, but its also a R6 bow compared to the R8 of the dooms shaft, meaning you can augment 2 more times for +10% affinity, effectively making it equal to a R8 bow with neutral affinity. i dont really get why he'd have more than 1 dragon element bow on there to begin with.

    • @taropat-EN
      @taropat-EN 6 років тому

      Im stuck using the Rath Bow till I can cancel out that negative affinity with augments :( Currently working on my dragonbone bow cause it hits harder than Hazak/Nergi/Xeno Bow against things weak to dragon.
      And exactly! its not even to do with trying to "deal the most damage" if all it takes is using the right element to deal twice as much damage I don't see why you wouldn't. Not talking picking the best bow and the optimal load out, just straight using the monsters weakness, taking a 20 minute fight down to 10 minute fight. If using the coating is that important to you, equip the charm or the jewel to grant that coating to the bow.
      (200 hours in MHW, if were talking the series then i've clocked 2,000 alone in Freedom Unite with a bow... and several hundred more in the following games)

      @Christopher Prevost Just use the weakness exploit from dragonking eyepatch. You only lose negligible damage when you anti-crit on a non weakpoint anyway. Eyepatch gives you enough affinity to overcome any weapons natural negative affinity when hitting weakspots including Cera Coilbender.

      @@redsohc You probably know this by now but anyway... You will soon have so much coating that you simply want to use them all.
      Good tip: take the ammo and coatings out of the supply box whenever quest starts, even if you don't use them. Stash them later so when you need to use them, you don't need to craft/buy them. Of course, don't do this if you are in a party, unless the party is full and no one needs those things. From my experience, no one takes them... So I take 'em.
      Another good tip: main several other weapons. I used to main bow, glaive, dual blades and longsword. For every weapon, I set the auto-crafting to craft coatings whenever I pick up herbs and whatnot. Learning other weapons helps make the game not-so-boring - playing bow can be very boring - as well as teaches me how other weapons function. Nowadays, I like longsword more than bow, because timing Foresight Slash is more fun than shooting arrows. Still, I have about 3k power coatings now, sitting in my stash... and 9999 Normal Ammo 2, Pierce Ammo 1 and Spread Ammo 1. And if that's not enough, I just go farm some zenny and buy ammo from provision supplies...
      Basically: use the ammos and coatings, you can replenish them easily by endgame.

    Been playing Dual Blades so far (fighting the elders for the first time) and now wanting to give the bow a try as my 2nd weapon. I made the Kadachi Strikebow based on thinking it looked the best, I'm glad to see that it's viable as well as an honourable mention.

  • @Narniak69

    Lower level players really only need 3 bows:
    1. Flying Kadachi Strikebow - Shreds 75% of the monsters in the game, including Nergigante, Kushala Daora, and Vaal Hazak. Shock damage is king in MHW. Use the melder to convert all your trash decoration drops into shock damage gems. By stacking attack and shock you can get 250 raw damage + 370 shock damage at HR14. GG
    2. Legia Snowfletcher - Specialty bow for the fire-based assholes like Teostra.
    3. Hazak Velos II - Specialty bow for Elder dragons.

    I have one other odd shoutout I wanted to give: the Anjanath bow. It's got raw just below Nerg and blos, -20% affinity that can be handled with weakness exploit and, most important, 390 fire. That's a lot of raw and elemental power on a bow. My usual team for tempered Val Hazak (a popular endgame opponent) has elderseal users, so the pure damage of this weapon should not be ignored.

    My favorite bow not listed is Archers Dance III
    Archers Dance III is my status bow of choice. You can get Zorah magdaros armor pieces early on in high rank which accesses critical status and this is the one of the few weapons I would actually use with that ability which pairs nicely with the +20% affinity on the bow. It's basically an easier to craft version of the Great Hunters Bow but if you can unlock the Blast element on it and combine it with the Zorah armor it's a freaking monster of a bow. So many explosions .... Late high rank it loses some luster, but I imagine that if you take the time to augment this bow and it's corresponding set it can be a force late late game too. Great early high rank bow to use imo.

    Bow main here. Good list! I think this is a great general list. I personally stick to more damage and so I often just find out the monster's element weakness and pick a bow that complements that. If you pick a bow with a high element then that bow will usually do more to monsters weak to that element which is why I'm typically favoring the Anja bow to the Rathalos bow for a fight like Val Hazak or Legiana bow over Kushala bow for Diablos. Though, I have to agree that the Val Hazak bow is just too good.

  • @Dudimus777
    @Dudimus777 6 років тому +2

    I find myself using the Doom Shaft a lot mainly for the amount of damage you get from it without sacrificing affinity like from the Diablos Tree. However, I think the most fun bow to use would be the Datura String III from the Pukei Pukei Tree. With raw damage that exceeds 200, a level 2 and level 1 gem slots, with a hidden element of 240 blast element Paralysis and Improved Poison Coating. Pair this with a free elem/blast attack/bombardier set and you're looking at 300 blast element that procs very often, especially when paired with the apothecary mantle.

      Eh ... Kirin is the one elder dragon in the game whose aura abilities don't bother me much, therefore elderseal isn't as much of a big deal. Although it's probably because my weapons of choice are the Lance and Bow, both of which can hit the head easily and consistently due to how precise they are. So I don't have to worry about the body bouncing my attacks off. As for the random lightning strikes that accompany the aura, Lance I just block them (guard up Uragaan set ftw!) and bow you just have to be careful and not stay zoomed in too long.

      If you factor in the affinity and do the math, then they have the same raw damage. But the Anja arch have much higher fire elemental, which isn’t affected by affinity, than the Rathalos. Therefore, the Arch is always the go to bow for going solo against Kirin and Valhazak.

      Saber Alter
      A lot of really great bows weren't mentioned.
      Pretty much all bows here are either raw or dragon which I find quite strange considering that there is the Legia Snowfletcher that can just destroy any kind of diablos in 3 minutes even in the hands of someone who isn't that well versed with bows.
      Also there is no mention of the Flying Kadachi Strikebow. Considering that what feels like more than 50% of the monsters are weak to thunder and the paralysis+ on that bow I think it should have been worth a mention.
      Generally the great capabilities of bows for dealing elemental damage are largely disregarded here.

    I prefer the elemental bows, sticking close to the monster weak points and using spread shot. Elemental bonus 5, constitution 5, and evade extender 2+ are my staple skills.
    Great for this style:
    + Dragonbone bow III [420 dragon]
    + Anja Archer III [390 fire],
    + Legia Snowfletcher [390 ice]
    Okay for this style:
    + Flying Kadachi Strikebow (w/ elemental critical and exploit weakness) [250 thunder]
    + Hunters Proudbow (w/ free element 3) [360 water]
    I've found that my clear times are generally better when I play in this style than when playing with a dragon piercer-oriented style (although there are certainly exceptions, notable Teostra).

Because sometimes you just want to DP all the way, or status all the way, or use them elemental bows when power coatings run out. A good bow is whatever is in your hand and what the player makes out of it.

      Only 6 monsters have any amount of weakness to fire and of those only Kirin (the *only* reason anyone would ever have a fire build) and Vaal Hazaak (who should be fought with Dragon/elderseal anyway) are the only ones that really put up a fight.
      Most of the monsters you should actually hunt are straight up immune to fire. Ice, Thunder and Dragon are the only elements that have real value in this game, and you may have noticed the only elements mentioned in this video.
      Fire and Water damage are so niche, it’s not worth the time to build a set for them.

      A great early high rank bow to use is the Archers Dance (Kulu Yaku tree). It's a great status bow, and if you can awaken it you can compensate the damage with blast status. It's basically a weaker version of his #5 bow and very easy to craft

    • @sanderkiki
      @sanderkiki 6 років тому

      imo its much better, more blast and it have affinity. should have been #5 instead of arena bow imo

    • @KyouOneZilla
      @KyouOneZilla 6 років тому

      Well ... it does have the edge in affinity. But to get the better blast you have to build up Free Elem to at least 2 which can be straining on your armor set unless you get the charm. That said the charm is actually pretty easy to make as well. The GHB also has a decoration slot (A level 3 on at that) so these 2 factors give it an edge in the "more skills in your set" department.
      The GHB has a higher base attack, but the AD3 can be augmented 2 more times than the GHB so that's nice. Hopefully in an update they put the Critical Status on a decoration which would let the AD3 sail past the GHB imo.

    Bow main here, the bows suggested here are good however most bow users are currently making the mistake of tiering towards DP damage, you will have far better results with charge shot and building elemental damage and thus bows such as, Anja Arch II, Legiana Snowfletcher & Hazak Velos II come out on top, crafting all three of these bows will give you a wide range of weaknesses to easily take down tempered elder dragons, the only expectation being Nergigante who is mostly weak to thunder however the Hazak bow will still do the job.

      Man I have every elemental bow EXCEPT for Hazak Velos...currently subbing Nerg bow for it...I can't seem to farm those DAMN fangs...Nobody goes for Vaal's face lol

    • @TheMetalGaia
      @TheMetalGaia 6 років тому

      Also would you recommend going for Crit Element using Hazak Velos/Nerg bow? Or should I go for pure damage? I use Eyepatch, Kaiser Mail b, Xeno Claws a, rath soul coil a, and Rath greaves a for my elemental bows.

    • @tomball3512
      @tomball3512 6 років тому

      TheMetalGaia I run with crit element but also try to boost raw and elemental damage as much as I can, currently I am running with Rathalos Helm B, Nergigante Mail B, Kaiser Vambraces a, Nerigante Coil B and Rath Soul Greaves B, whilst using Hazak I then slot 3x Dragon Jewel 1s, 1x attack Jewel 1, 2x Physique Jewel 2 & 1x Tenderizer Jewel 2, the end result is Attack Boost lvl 5, Constitution lvl 5, Dragon Attack lvl 3, Weakness Exploit lvl 3, Stamina Surge lvl 2 & Focus lvl 1, this will cap out your elemental damage for that bow and give you 264 raw + an additional 5% affinity as well as the ability to healthily evade charge shot without running out of stamina too quickly. However I am currently missing a few decorations due to RnG drops such as normal shots and addition charge decorations which you could work in to push the build even further, test it out! The build is universal for all elemental bows as you can just change out your elemental damage jewels to match any bow you wish to use, my personal favourite is Anja Arch II.

      MrAlbie1970 The only reason I haven't listed that particular bow is because I haven't crafted it myself as it's elemental scaling seems much lower than some of the others, I may craft it tomorrow and test it out on Kushala & Nergi.

    This Bow is a great crit set Bow. And augmented with Power increase it can hit really hard too.

    Hazak has been my go to so far. Started with the switch axe, then when I tried out bow I said screw it and made hazak's. Once I made a decent set to go with it I shaved off FIVE minutes from my hazak hunts. It's insane, and I'm still a bow noob.

  • @ant_989
    @ant_989 6 років тому +5

    Kind of bad list tbh. I have no idea why he placed Vaal Hazak bow on the 1st place lol. With bows you mainly focus on element and you should make separate sets for each element. For ice - Legiana bow, for Fire - Anjenath, for Thunder - Tobi Kadachi, For Dragon - Vaal Hazak. With those bows you mainly focus on spread and power shot to spam element. If you want to focus on raw use Diablos bow and focus on Dragonpiercer. That's pretty much it. Don't waste your time on other bows. There's pretty much no point. Blast bow is really bad in this game.

      xeno bow all the way. Power shots, normal shots, special ammo and piercing shots with 5lvls of consitution. Let the dmg spam begin and never end

    • @Droop-e
      @Droop-e 6 років тому

      Baron von Stabossen damn how’d you get 5 lvls of constitution. I’ve been making really good bow builds, but I just have to keep drinking dash juice if I don’t want to waste time on hunts.

    • @KyouOneZilla
      @KyouOneZilla 6 років тому

      Don't even worry about dash juice, Instead start each quest with a mushroomancer set and get your stamina buff from that then switch your armor back to what you want.

    • @PenguinMcDuck

      @Disco Puppy No, it's really bad. I compared Archer's Dance II with a Blast DB weapon that's at the same rarity as it. Archer's Dance II proc-ed 3 times over the course of the fight. Blast DB = 9 times. And I definitely killed faster with Kadachi Strikebow than Archer's Dance of the same rarity.
      Blast bow might seem powerful because each time it procs, it's 120 damage. But blast has diminishing returns, whereas elemental damage doesn't. Even with DB, I found that if my DB has 40% affinity, he definitely killed faster than if he used a blast weapon.
      The only weapon I found so far that does blast damage really well is insect glaive, because IG doesn't seem to hit hard despite its high weapon ATK. It also has long reach, hits fast (relatively for a weapon its size and range), suitable for pairing up with a blast drone, you can heal yourself with the drone's green extract if things get ugly; and last but not least, your drone attack procs your 120-damage blast explosions as well.
      For weapons like bow that can hit weak spots at range, increasing weak spot damage is more useful than blast which has fixed damage. Hence why elemental bows win all the time.
      Also, some monsters are resistant to blast, or immune to it ---> Teostra.

    i like the thunder bow...with stacking defense and thunder armor...sure i can only use paralysis and power coats but it works out pretty well...couple that with defense charm, then those ATK and DEF charms that go in your bag...then eat a ATK food, and maybe some demon drug, and your not going to be a easy target...

    Personally, I’d put the Flying Kadachi Strikebow higher on here. It has amazing Thunder attack plus additional Paralysis chance. When matched with the right decorations and the Alpha Kadachi Armor set, the element attack can skyrocket beyond 300 (I know this from experience). Plus, if you’re having trouble with Nergigante like I am, then it’s previous upgrade, the Kadachi Strikebow, is the one to aim for because of Nergigante’s weakness to Dragon and Thunder elements.

      Munagi Xero I’m a bow main it’s the Deviljho tree is my go to for Elder Dragon farming. I have the Xeno and it’s great for status affects in team fights, where I’m usually playing support and not dominate damage dealer, but that’s about the only time I ever use it.
      Deviljho, Kadachi, and Legiana are always my top 3 bows in terms of hunt success and overall usage in the game.

    Hey Arekkz, the giant jawblade for great sword I think is one of the strongest due to adding a non-elemental decoration on it and filling all the augmentations with attack! Just an opinion really as I also have the full set for nergigante a armor and waist is nergigante b armor. Attack is up to 7, agitator is up to 5 and maximum might is up to 3 while stamina surge is up to 2 so the weapon no doubt packs a punch.
