This game is underrated. There was cut content for this game that involved a versus mode and a character change can still be accessed via cheats. Its limited to the enemies assigned to that level though. Every enemy even has their own combos and they even shout the name of their moves like the main character does. Its dumb and cheesy. Its great.
Fun fact: One reason for the lackluster level design is that the levels were designed by actual architects to a tee, which meant samey and functional but unexciting levels.
It's not just the level design, but the lack of interior decorations, as you find yourself fighting through empty spaces as opposed to locations that give the impression of a living, breathing world. In the office building, for instance, where are the cubicles? Where are the desks? Where are the computers? Where are the potted plants? Where are the paintings? They could have easily compensated for the actual architecture of a building by placing interior objects within that would have made the setting look a lot less bland.
Man, this game is one of the most obscure games I’ve ever encountered back then. I remembered my mom bought it for me on my birthday and honestly I didn’t think nothing of it except how cool it was (and found something similar to GitS). Later on I found out there were HUGE problems: The Controls, level design, music, etc and yet I still managed to finish this game in one piece. Fun fact: The VA for Konoko did the voice of Yukiko Amagi from Persona 4.
Believe it or not, Discount Mokoto Kusanagi handles waaaaay better than her real counterpart in the ps2 GitS game. Oni was and is a treasure of its time.
ngl i kinda wish that bungie would make like a sequel or spritual successor to this. a third person shooter with strong melee and a anime story on current tech with a decent budget would be badass
Please please do yourself a favor and ignore the disaster of a port that Rockstar pushed onto the world for Oni. The PC version, even at launch, has much better controls and visuals, and the entire meat of this game are its controls. The PC version of the game has been revamped by the community for years with the Anniversary Edition and Daodan.dll to run well on modern hardware at modern resolutions, HD textures, bug fixes, gameplay additions, mods, new levels new characters, new animations, revamps, music changes, tweaks, etc. I myself have done a bit of modding for the game with the people at the Anniversary Edition forums and learned a lot about how Bungie's proprietary engine works, but that knowledge pales in comparison to the hard work and dedication that the AE crew have put in to learning and understanding how the engine works. There were no mod tools released with the game. They just took the files and worked for years figuring out how it all works. I really respect their hard work.
Conceptually this game is freaking awesome. A third person shooter with wrestling moves? I want *more* of that. like twenty dozen Oni clones instead of the billionth Call of Duty please.
Bungie (known for Halo series) + Rockstar (known for GTA series) = Oni (a game no one really remembers nor really cares about) BTW, if anyone wants a copy Rockstar's still selling Oni for PS2 along side Smugglers Run and Bully.
Love this game. Still remember the Christmas I got this, SF EX 3, and Rygar. Gems before there time in my opinion. The gameplay and the story had me HOOKED as a kid and I love how the chapters yell there special names in true anime fashion Cheat codes were amazing for this too.
One of the first games I've ever played on PC. I remember being 7 or 8, the only games I played were Oni, Serious Sam, Black and White, and Unreal Tournament. Good times.
Fun Factoids: There's a small chance the training robot will kill the cadet. Shinitama has a sad little comment about it. The reason the game is so unpolished is that halfway through development they lost a bunch of money recalling Myth 2, then they were under contract to do Halo and Rockstar had to publish it. The levels were actually designed in Autocad and the realistic architecture (ha) was considered a selling point - this may be what inspired autodesk to go on to develop the Stingray game engine. And in fact Marty O'Donnell DID do at least some of the soundtrack.
Holy shit someone is actually talking about this game, I remember getting this game as a kid and getting stuck shortly after the tutorial and never really trying it again but the cover art always looked neat.
Operation Darkness is a LEGIT gem if you follow the gamefaqs, keep your weight down (which = turn speed up), and pedantically search for a sawed-off or 2. BUT it's a tactical/strategy RPG, so it's a time sink. Strong recommend for anyone who has an Xbox 360 lying around :D
It was this game that taught me the existence of L3 and R3. When I got to the part where it wanted me to press R3 I remember being completely confused.
R.A.D - Robot Alchemic Drive would be a good choice. The controls are a bit wonky but it's about as realistic a robot anime experience as you'll get... Though the realism part is kind of a mixed bag XD
I adore this game. The pc port is MUCH better in terms of control. The combat has some incredible depth once you master it and just holy shit you can do some radical stuff. The ps2 port is ehhhh I suggest playing the pc version it’s great.
I return to this game almost yearly It's nothing special but I played it so much as a kid I can't help but love it the voice acting for the most part was pretty solid
Holy shit i love this game. One of the first games I played that had a bunch of ways to approach combat. Always hoped for some kind of sequel or revisit in some capacity but dount it'll ever happen. Quite a gem in my eyes.
Oni was the shit! This was my second ever ps2 game. I'd sometimes go back to play it every few years. Wish we got more Oni but that's never gonna happun.
I played this back in the day and I had to go to bat for it a lot. The combat had stuff once you learned to use it and in overpower you were so strong it felt anime.
holy fuck didnt expect to see Oni again lol ngl i have a soft spot for this game cuz it was a fun little romp when it first came out and the combat was p hype back then too. tbh I'd love a proper remake of it with todays tech since I think i'd do really well :0
I remember this being one of the first PS2 games released. I too never played it even though my local video game store had it and I thought about it multiple times.
I got Oni for $4.99 new at EB Games. The level design got really good deeper in the game with multiple floors and alternate paths. I remember beating it but this one airport stage was a real ball buster. There were barely any hypo sprays and you had to cross this narrow railway over a death pit while soldiers on opposing sides got to take pot shots at you with this cheap ass screaming rocket launcher. You could get the exact same weapon earlier in the stage, but it was useless since there wasn't enough room to fire it without killing yourself.. It took a bit to realize you had to carry it though the whole stage to get to that point and take out the soldiers.
Me and my siblings loved this game. Great combat, sadly the more interesting movesets are limited to later levels. The pc version has more sensible controls.
It's so sad to see games like this flop. It's great conceptually. But it was executed horribly. Someone should bring back dead games and revive them into what they deserve.
I’ve always wanted to play this game but never got round to it. Looking at it now as a halo fan and man you can see where all the halo outfits came from looking at the npcs. Will say though as janky as this game looks it’s pretty charming in a way.
It's been 5 years since I played this and yes the cheat codes in this are fun, my old laptop could run this but my new one plays just the intro but alway cut the game off before reaching the title screen guess it's missing a certain card to run these early 2000 games.
I have to admit that this was one of the first and only PC games I owned, since we were console kids growing up. I bought this at a Best Buy, along with the Orange Box, for... 15 dollars total? I enjoyed this game. You had to cheese it sometimes, but I liked it.
i never knew bungie made a "anime-ish" game i mean i kinda had a feeling they liked anime at least in some form but to this extent just blows my mind and i wish this got a hd remake or a sequel or reboot or something tbh i want more of this... XD lol
This brings back memories. I still have my copy when I bought it way back when haha! @Matt McMuscles I vote for Breakdown (OG Xbox or Xbox One BC) or Crimson Sea 2 (PS2).
The only thing i remember about this game are the awkard controls and that it remonded me of aeon flux, which is weird cause this is nothing like aeon flux
I recently went to my retro game store and picked this up for 9.99.I remember getting this game back in the day at wal mart and i forgot why i hated....the controls maybe as to why?.I havent replayed it yet since im in the process of moving.I heard that their are unfinished levels in this game that are lefted in.The flooring i think and the walls?.If this is true let me know.
But it's actually the opposite. Ride To Hell's melee sucks while a gun does it better. The damage output of firearms is low in Oni so it incentivizes you to use melee more

SONIC 2006 Will be back tomorrow! Starting with Silver's campaign!
Have you tried Blood Will Tell for the ps2? It's Dororo the anime the game.
Liam’s positivity VS Silver’s campaign?
.......It’s no use!
Wooot!
what about ghost hunter for the ps2 mat
This is the content I crave!

*"Devil Spin Kick!"*
A lot of stuff from this game got cut, cause this was during the Bungie and Halo, This was supposed to even have online support
This even won E3’s Game Critic award
Fun fact: One reason for the lackluster level design is that the levels were designed by actual architects to a tee, which meant samey and functional but unexciting levels.
That's such an insane yet oddly reasonable thing to do I love it

ngl i kinda wish that bungie would make like a sequel or spritual successor to this. a third person shooter with strong melee and a anime story on current tech with a decent budget would be badass
Or even just a remake with proper cell shading, fleshing out the environments, and adding some of the cut content.

To Bungie's credit this was made first with Mouse and Keyboard in mind. PS2 port was handled by a Rockstar's internal Studio.

Can you get suplexed while in Godzilla mode? Cause i think it'll look ridiculous. Plus you should see if enemies do other wrestling moves.
04:45 I can see the MARATHON logo in that circular symbol thing!
That main character is like if Major Kusonagi and Leon had a kid, she would be that kid. Too bad the game had shitty controls.
