Have you played Bungie's anime martial arts simulator? If so, what are your thoughts on it? Let us all know with a comment and maybe rate/share the video if you think it's worthy of it. Now if you'll excuse me, all this fighting stuff has filled me with a strong desire to rewatch all the fight scenes from The Raid and John Wick multiple times. Have a good day! :3

You should do a playthrough and review for The Legend of Dragoon for Ps1. It's a 4 disk long, 40 hour minimum game, with great story, great and painted levels, and incredible music. You can pick it up on the Playstation Store on PS3.

It's definitely long been among Bungie's older titles I've been meaning to visit along with Marathon (There's also their RTS series Myth made & released prior to Bungie West's Oni, but RTS has never been my thing, though the earliest prototype for Halo was in-fact an RTS that was "Myth, but Sci-Fi"). For all of the attempts at adapting Ghost in the Shell for video games go, Oni may be one of the best examples of one alongside source-mod NEOTOKYO° (Binary Domain perhaps another).
The combat definitely remains the most appealing aspect, and with the music composed by Martin O'Donnell & Michael Salvatori (The very same two that composed Myth then Halo & onward) as TotalAudio along with the group Power of Seven, it definitely holds my interest in that respect. And as far as games attempting the anime-aesthetic prior to Jet Set Radio's Cel-Shading techniques go, Oni's characters certainly hold up nicely today (Bungie even has a tidbit on exchanges between Lorraine McLees, a senior artist for Bungie & the Bungie West team on Konoko's character design at the time: halo.bungie.net/inside/history.aspx?link=oni ), especially compared to Monolith's LithTech shooter Shogo: Mobile Armoured Division (A delightful oddity, that one). But this has definitely been the first I've heard about the cheat codes for the game. I do indeed miss having those in games these days (Having a dev-command guide-sized list of cheat codes for the older Grand Theft Auto games was made them so much fun for me).
But as far as I know, for all of the references to Marathon Halo makes and the 'The Siege of Madrigal' track from Myth that was always placed in secret across the series (Even as an unlisted track in Halo: Combat Evolved's soundtrack CD release, which my copy has), the only reference to Oni I know of is the game's Office of Naval Intelligence (The acronym obviously; O.N.I.).

The music part of it was fine in my opinion. Because they were stingy on the music probably in the same way dark souls did. To give those moments when you DO hear it more impactful.
My favorite weapon is the plasma rifle. Hands down, because it has splash damage, can be used at multiple ranges including close (if your careful and don't accidentally damage yourself with the splash damage)
Also, fire based weapon. Because why not?

Fun fact, the reason why you can play as other characters with fully fledged movesets is because Oni was meant to have multiplayer. It was cut from the game shortly before release, but there is a ton of leftover content from it hidden in the game (such as maps). A while back the folks at Oni Central were working on restoring the multiplayer in a mod called Oni Flatline, but im not sure how far they got with it.

There was a time where there was at least one multiplayer head to head fighting mod(if not more than one) with additional playable characters and the community to play such mod or mods had a decent number of people in it(never messed with it myself, but I found out about it looking up stuff about the game back in the day). Not sure of the current status, though.

Flatline is a morbidly hilarious name. I did love this game as a kid even if the janky level design was a bit counterintuitive and not lit well enough for me to see past my own feet in some levels. But the character select cheat and a touch of invincibility led to so much replay value that points toward something that could have been legendary, if Bungie were allowed the time to let it cook. I bought this game on a whim as a preteen, and I'll tell ya, I got much more mileage out of this than Shaman King, which I got on the same day. I beat the latter in like, 3 hours. Oh dear lord was that GARBAJJJJJ. I'm still salty that the cover art was a blatant lie as you can neither dual weild nor use a shotgun or AK-47 in the game at all, but sure, I guess at the end of the day I could cope. I could only play so much Budokai and Ultimate Ninja for my dose of video game weeb shit

I actually remember playing this game as a teen at a friends house. Never for the longest remembered the name but thanks to this video, I now know what to look out for.
Also fun fact, during the training there is a sequence where you watch a simulated battle. It's done to give you an idea of what battles will be like and what you and the enemy are capable of doing. Of course the battle is supposed to be won by the bot emulating you in that scenario but there is a situation where that bot can actually lose and the best part? There's unique dialog if the bot DOES lose where the person training you will literally be like, "Um... That wasn't supposed to happen... Ok let's move on..."

IIRC it's because of an issue regarding the trademark. Apparently another company has a trademark on using "Conan" for media here in the States, and I believe it's related either to Conan the Barbarian or the late night talk show host Conan O'Brien. Because of that the US distributor of the series called it "Case Closed" since it still fit the show's genre of being a detective series. Amusingly the aforementioned Conan O'Brien became aware of the series when he visited Japan a while back and even visited the theme park attractions associated with it at Universal Studios Japan.

I took the liberty of being a master at this game, able to do those moves you talked about being difficult at a moment's notice in a fight, also stringing together simple punches and kicks directionally instead of always facing an opponent is amazingly worth while. This game is in my top ten for sure because you really feel connected to the martial arts in ways in which no game has connected ever since. Oni separates itself because every other game has the same combos you perform in chains. Oni on the other hand has everything from the ground up. You can throw simple kicks, simple punches, leg sweeps, backflips, front flips, side flips, backlip kicks, front flip kicks, sliding kicks, spinning kicks, spinning punches, disarms, grapples, kicks for enemies to your left, your right, behind you, punches to your left, right, and behind you.
This game made you feel like a martial arts master! Yes, the skill curve for this game was difficult to master...but boy wjen you did was this the most satisfying and replayable game. Every fight was different! And challenging yourself to finish off enemies in new ways is always great.
Can you tell I would melt if they remade this for PC. I don't even have a gaming PC and I would happily fork over the cash for one in a heartbeat.

Pentium Celeron at 300 Mhz, 16 MB of RAM, and I didn't even know what a graphics card was or why I'd ever need one.
With all of the things to take away from the game, the two things that stick with me are the music and a piece of concept art showing a deleted battle droid that would have served as a boss fight. Or maybe he shouldn't judge a movie based on what it's not. GitS isn't an action romp, and I don't think it's fair on the show if you go into it with such a closed-minded viewpoint when its focus lies elsewhere.
You don't play Banjo Kazooie expecting a tough-as-nails linear platformer, do you? So why would you do the same to a film or series that's centered around political intrigue, existentialism and sociatal problems in a cyberpunk setting?
It's his own fault for getting flack for that, and anyone consuming any film of their own volition should judge the film for what it is and how well or poorly it achieves that, instead of making assumptions about what film it is with next to no research, then bitching about it after the fact. If we're going by that logic, then Metal Gear Rising sucks because its story isn't serious enough, ignoring all other qualities that game has because I wanted a good story damn it.

Okay so Rockstar and Bungi made this sweet looking game?

    • @Bizargh
      @Bizargh 5 років тому +4

Bungie West was the California-based developer behind Oni, with Rockstar Canada (Now Rockstar Toronto) porting it to PlayStation 2 (Bungie was working on the Myth games, then the earlier versions of Halo). After Microsoft bought Bungie in late 2000, Bungie West was folded into Bungie Studios back in Chicago with the relocated staff helping with Halo: Combat Evolved. Here's a little summary from Bungie themselves (Even with a back & forth between Lorraine McLees, long-time artist for Bungie, and the Bungie West team on Konoko's character design): halo.bungie.net/inside/history.aspx?link=oni
Angel Studios was working on Oni 2, but then were acquired by Rockstar Games to become Rockstar San Diego (With information to suggest Angel's AGE engine used for the game was what Rockstar sought after and it playing a large part in becoming the RAGE engine that powered Grand Theft Auto IV & beyond).

one note about the "shapeshift" cheat code... It does let you change to a different character, but ONLY those who appear within the current level.
For example, you can't shapeshift to Muro within a level where he does NOT appear.

      Which saved Bungie?
Halo did with some help from Microsoft. Bungie was about to go bankrupt due to them having to recall a version of Myth 2 that contained the uninstall bug that causes the uninstaller to delete the C drive, they had to sell a new version with the bug patched out, and that was way too much, they were losing money because of them desperately fixing the bug.

A few tips that will help you enjoy this game more. You can actually chain normal attacks into throws, special moves, and gunshots. It is easy to do and very consistent once figure out how to do it. Use the various dodge moves to bait an enemy into an attack first and then punish the enemy with a combo(there are infinite combos in this game). Also, because you are immune to melee attacks when preforming a throw, you can chain throws when surrounded by multiple foes. The movements in this game is amazing. You can chain a lot of moves and you can dodge in all directions, even dodge and change direction in the air. Play this game like you play Mario 64 and dark soul, try to create a sequence of movements that work for a specific scenario. Have fun!

I first heard about Oni in a small article in a game book from the new defunct Game in Box back in the day. I was impressed with the idea and with the illustration of Oni beating a guard with the back of her hand (just like Batman) while firing a pistol. I always wanted to play this game but never found it. I remember seeing a mention to it in one of those Honest Game Trailers but never more than a simple mention. This is the first time I see the gameplay of this game and I found it to be quite good (if flawed). I would probably love this game too if I had played it back in 2001.
Also, you should remember that Mirror's Edge has a similar idea of combat and the protagonist is also a woman. Maybe you should take look on that one, hein? Anyway, great video. I appreciated it very much.

Good video. I can still remember how fun and exciting my first time playing was, around a decade ago. The last few levels were punishing though. IMO, Oni has 2 MAJOR issues:
-The gunplay: Weapons kick super hard and aiming is finnicky (Perhaps a lock-on system would-ve helped?). Konoko is still centered when using guns and that makes using weapons that much more frustrating
-The story is VERY underdeveloped. It's another one of those games that has super high stakes but I found it hard to care because there's essentially NO WORLD BUILDING. There is some character development, I'll give the game that, but it fails miserably in regard to making you care about the world itself. Maybe it should've taken MORE hints from Anime and take its time to develop the setting.

I love both Ghost in the Shell and Akira but I can totally understand if you didn't like the latter since all related to the story and plot is unfinished cluster fuck based on a manga 10 times more ambitious that wasn't even finished during the production of the movie.
Most of the people (specially American audiences and myself included) love it for the INCREDIBLE animation quality that put anything made by Disney to shame and also because for a lot of youngsters it was the first time we got contact with actual adult animation.

This game was lit. I bought it because Rockstar logo on the cover and I was huge into GTA, and also ANIME, so I was sold. Still mad the cover implies you can dual weild a shotgun and LMG when neither weapon is available in the game, neither is dual weilding in general. Hell, True Crime series let you do that, and those were supposed to be slightly more grounded crime sims where it's GTA but you're the cop. But otherwise it's still a great little janky memoir for anime themed beat-em-up/third person shooter hybrids that had great ideas (character select cheat being a vestige of multiplayer, the massive gun the miniboss in one level has with no replenishable ammo) though not executed in a way to garner sales and appeal. I hope this franchise somehow comes back but, I won't hold my breath on that.

Also, dude, you forgot that Myth existed.
It was in Bungie's list too.
And Myth was amazing for it's time, the sequel was great too, if it didn't have the pesky Uninstall bug that wipes lut the user's hard drive when you installed it anywhere other than it's default directory
Edit: turns out, thanks to a XPlay video (r.i.p XPlay btw, thanks alot comcast), this Oni would have technically been Bungie's final game due to them having to recall all copiea of Myth 2 and rereleasing them with a patched version. If it weren't for Microsoft aaving their bacon, Halo wouldn't be around today, come to rhink of it the Destiny games wouldn't have been here either, neither would the upcomming Marathon reboot, which is a game I'm NOT looking forward to by the way.

Excluding the PC version, which is the definitive way to experience RE4? (If you're wondering why I excluded the PC version it's because I can only play games on consoles.)

    • @CriticalNobody
      @CriticalNobody  5 років тому +2

I haven't bought RE4 on Switch because as great as that game is, charging $30 for it today is too high. As far as I'm concerned, as long as you have a controller hooked up, there's little reason to play any version of RE4 other than PC nowadays. But if that's not an option, really any console version will do since it's available on all of them and for cheaper than Switch.
