Lyrics:
Mary Anne and Wanda were the best of friends
All through their high school days
Both members of the 4H Club
Both active in the FFA
After graduation Mary Anne went out
lookin' for a bright new world
Wanda looked all around this town
and all she found was Earl

I just love that the actor playing "Dead Earl" is dancing enthusiastically with everyone else at the end, in his "Dead, Decomposing Earl" makeup and costume! Somehow it makes the solidarity of all the artists involved with this Chicks hit even more heartening.

Dennis Franz? You never heard of Dennis Franz?
@@mayhemjr.803 I confess, I had to Google him -- I must have been living under a rock. But never mind me, he's terrific!
@@marioncapriotti1514 🤣😂🤣😂
Dennis Franz plays the actor. Huge star in his time. NYPD Blue and Hillstreet Blues.
“Ain’t it dark wrapped up in that tarp” is just a purely savage line.
Awesome!👍
My favorite is “We’ll pack a lunch!”
The look on Natalies face always brings the lols
Dennis Franz in zombie makeup is one of the most hilarious parts of the video.
The entire song is fucking amazing. “We’ll pack a lunch, and stuff you in the trunk” lyrical genius. Lol
The fact this song was written by a man is even better😁.
Natalie’s face at “we’ll pack a lunch!” cracks me up every time. After I’ve cried at the hospital scene. This video brings out allll the emotions! Love it so much.
Thought I was the only one shedding tears at that part!
"He was a missing person who nobody missed at all." Best line, my favorite since I heard it listening to the Fly album way back when.
"Right away Maryanne flew up from Atlanta on a red eye midnight flight" is the line that brings me back. So many victims of abuse don't have a Maryanne, which makes the emotion conveyed here so much more poignant to me.
Absolutely. That line is the heart of the entire song/story. That’s why we root for them to make dirt out of Earl. The female friendship is so special 💜
I haven't even seen my best friend in person in a decade. If I called her because someone was abusing me, both she and her wife (who I've only met twice in person) would drop everything and drive/fly from Illinois to come and be by my side. I can't say the same for most of my family members, most of whom live less than a 3 hour drive away from me.
I’ve been that person for several people and if anyone of my friends said they got an earl id be down in a heart beat to give him some black eyed peas!
Women, choose better men.
@@rcbeamer, Victim blaming isn't cool. Also, a lot of abusive partners (because women abuse men, too, in addition to the abuse which can occur in same sex relationships) don't reveal themselves to be abusers until they've already got their victims solely dependent on them.
The murder is totally noncontroversial. Earl was such a huge jerk that everyone is just like "you go girl" and then we all laugh. How lovely that is ❤❤
Hello 👋 Jessica. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I’m Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Not every murder victim is a victim lol
Lol this song got banned on plenty a station. Yeah it was controversial and murder isn't the thing to do to abusers, but it's a fun little ditty.
In real life, theyd end up in jail.
@@miketodd726 not necessarily some small towns certain people just don’t get looked for and I live in one them small towns
I know this is supposed to be a lighthearted look at a serious subject, but I still cry at the imagery of "Earl walked right through that restraining order and put her in intensive care." Every damn time.
its so sad people assume a piece of paper is enough to prevent such a thing. If someone has that mindset, nothing stops them.
With Trudeau in power, this line has even more significance here in Canada: perpetrators of assault are committing assault getting arrested, bailed, and arrested again, same day. One guy in Vancouver was arrested 3 times in one day, once less than an hour after being released. Innocent people should not have to live in fear like this!
Because it's so often true. Usually an abusive partner who the courts agree to grant a restraining order against is exactly the kind of person who will completely ignore, or toy around with the restraining order in order to terrify their victim, when the abused partner is also at the highest risk time - when they leave and draw a boundary.
The song does make the struggles clear. That she tried to do it the lawful way, it didn't protect her and he almost ended her, so they made a plan. The only way she'd be safe, since the courts won't lock them away, and they'll plot revenge even if they get a long sentence and victim is left in fear or in hiding for the rest of her life... Goodbye Earl!
At least in the US, women can have weapons to defend themselves in their own homes. Those of us in countries where we cannot have a firearm, a taser, or even pepper spray, and abusers ignore restraining orders here too...
Same. It gave me pure chills
@@scarletamazon3455 I don’t think people necessarily expect that a RO will perfectly protect them, but it does at least mean the victim can call the police without having to wait for another specific threat or assault to occur.
And, you may not be that much better off. Abuse victims here in the US may have more access to weapons, but so do their abusers. And the abusers tend to choose more lethal methods.
My deepest condolences to Laura Lynch's family and friends. Such a terrible time to suffer such a tragedy. Your music and strength will live on forever. RIP
Very sad to hear that, I went to the Grand Ol Oprey and sung to an empty hall in a tribute to the incredible George Jones............HE STOPPED LOVING HER TODAY.....GO DIXIES
I remember my mom playing this song when I was kid and we'd just look at eachother with unspoken hate for our situation. We didn't do it but he did pass away in a very fitting way in the end.
I'm glad it all worked out and I'm sorry you had to deal with that
Whoa! That's some sweet cathartic rage!
I'm glad he passed away in a way you see fitting. It can be cathartic. Some people act like you should never feel that way but when someone has brought you nothing but hell, especially when you're at their mercy, I see nothing wrong with wishing them out of your life completely.
And May he rest in shit….no remorse for abusers.
A rather one sided story so glad that you folks are not on a jury as I'd like to know much, much more detail. As they say, it takes two to tango.
“Right away Marianne flew in from Atlanta on a red eye midnight flight...”
I have heard this song hundreds of times for close to 2 decades and that line still brings me to tears. Every time.
It's beautiful, that's why... She doesn't even make it through the word "Maryanne" before I'm sobbing lol
Ride or dies don't quit.

RIP Lauren Lynch, my heart is actually broken! You brought me so much joy over the years!
Maybe if more abusers met this fate, less abuse would happen. Way to go, Chicks! Love this tune.
I just HAD to buy a shirt yesterday that says: Some of y'all don't know what happened to Earl and it shows! (With little piles of black eyed peas on each side of the saying)

the chicks bury him in a chorus of harmony and sass.
This is dedicated to my uncle Ron who, after 25 years of abusing my aunt Deanna, has finally contracted a staph infection that spread throughout his body and rendered him brain dead.

Oh heck yeah! This was one of the most popular songs from my childhood. I was so confused to see the name of the band being called "The Chicks" when I came across this video tonight.
Something that only just now thought of, was their name a play on the word hicks?
@@user-ee2vc4so2wApparently, Dixie is a (usually derogatory) term used for non-binary lesbians. The Chicks dropped the Dixie after learning what it meant because they didn’t want to offend anybody.
Same with Lady A dropping Antebellum after learning the history of that word.
I love this song it makes me giddy!! I had a handprint on my face that makeup wouldn't cover. I left him 18 years ago and I'm happy!
The best part of this, for me, is how the entire town danced about earl being dead, including earl. His zombie ass was there to celebrate his disappearance 😂
I'm 19 and can't believe I just heard this song for the 1st time ever when it came on the radio in the garage with my dad last night. The second it started I said "ooo this sounds good" loved the melody/singing instantly. We were in the middle of moving stuff when the chorus hit "That Earl had to die!", I immediately paused and went "😯 Oh my gosh I love this". Immediately put it on my playlist. Watched this vid about 3 times now. You know when a song is so good, that it makes you cry from how good it is? Not even just sad songs. I'm just getting choked up smiling at how good this deceptively upbeat song about getting rightful revenge is!!
And as soon as that last "nah nah nah nah NAH, NAH, NAH" hits you have to jump up and down. An infectious revenge song!
My best friend of 15 years was in a relationship with an “Earl” about 5 years ago. One night things got so bad he beat the living crap out of her she called me in tears to come rescue her I went right away to the house picked my friend off the floor and drove her straight to the hospital. The next morning we went back to the house packed up all her things and got her the hell out of their and she moved in back with her parents until she got back on her feet again. She’s now in a loving relationship with a wonderful man and have a beautiful daughter together I couldn’t be more happier for my BFF!

FYI, this is still a bop. I don't even care that my 8 year old self had no true understanding of the content.
Hello friend, I’m Scott and live in San Francisco California. How are you and your family and I hope you are safe over there with all this pandemic happening all around the world.
I was working at a radio station at the time. The file cabinets were covered with Earl's In The Trunk stickers. *Grin.*
"He was a missing person who nobody missed at all." Essentially, Earl is the living embodiment of"Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy"
This got me through this situation 3 years ago on April 12th as I am a domestic violence survivor
This song always makes me think of "Fried Green Tomatoes"........
Wonderful movie
When I was younger that movie scared me 😩😭
Yes!! My favorite movie!!
"The secret's in the sauce!"
Yes!!
Geez a lot of times I hear a song and then don't wanna look up the music video because nowadays they usually do something stupid that ruins the way I imagine the song. This is one of those times it gets it right. This video should've won an award....oh it did. Good
GEN-X Ladies have always been tough, outspoken, and great artists. ❤️
14 years later, this song still slaps
This song reaches you on a different level when you've had (and escaped from) a violent husband. You sing CAUSE EARL HAD TO DIE with intensity
So you would have pushed him down the cliff, too?
@@jeffharding5725 I'm not putting that down in writing
The night I left my husband, I had to take a 2 hour bus to the next city over to get to my mom's house, and I blasted this song over and over again.
Earl, for me, was this kid who sexuallly assaulted me in high school. I never was in a relationship or even really knew the guy, but I still sing that lyric with passion
Oh and then some!
ONE OF THE FUNNIEST SONGS AND VIDS OF ALL TIME.
I love how Dennis Franz does the "Thriller" Zombie dance at the end of this video. lol
As someone who had to convince her best friend to leave an abusive relationship.... I took strength from this song. It didn't come to... An end for that man but.....
I would definitely help my sister get rid of that abusive piece of crap. While singing this like it's my battlecry. 😍
Do it
You have a heart of gold, the world needs more good people like you around.💛👍
