I grew up with this song. I was literally a kid when it came out and we all loved it at school and sang it all the time. To me it was always just a great story, about regret, defiance, resignation. But I thought the lyrics and the story behind the song was fiction. I recently heard that the famous lyricist Tim Rice said he thought it was Freddie coming out, I just can't get it out of my head. I always knew Freddie was gay, or not completely straight anyway, even as a kid. But I guess I didn't understand homophobia or how it could affect people. Now when I hear it I can only hear it through that lens.

I grew up with this song. I was literally a kid when it came out and we all loved it at school and sang it all the time. To me it was always just a great story, about regret, defiance, resignation. But I thought the lyrics and the story behind the song was fiction. I recently heard that the famous lyricist Tim Rice said he thought it was Freddie coming out, I just can't get it out of my head. I always knew Freddie was gay, or not completely straight anyway, even as a kid. But I guess I didn't understand homophobia or how it could affect people. Now when I hear it I can only hear it through that lens.
