  • As humans, we are natural pattern-seekers and make connections between the things we observe. One of those connections is between cats, coat color, and personality. A set of stereotypes has evolved around some of the most common coat colors. Do they have any legitimacy? Find out in this week's video.

One of my old girlfriends had a black cat who was shy and aloof. He wasn’t into cuddling or being petted. My girlfriend said that black cats tend to be shy. I attribute this behavior to how he lived prior to my arrival. My girlfriend didn’t give that cat much attention from kittenhood until adulthood. After I was coming around more often, I would always greet the cat and make sure he was given attention. Soon this cat started opening up. Every time I visited, the cat was sure to come up and give me headbutts. He would even sleep next to me instead of hiding all night as he used to. He even started enjoying car rides.
I’ve always treated my tabby cat with respect and as a partner - not a subordinate. I’m rewarded everyday with his company. We’re pals.

I agree. The way you treat and care for cats has a big part on how their personality develops. My husband and I are cat adopters. We look at our fur babies as family members not pets.

We've had 2 all black cats (except for a little white spot on my long-haired Oskar's belly). Pablo was our "sweet awesome baby", despite having been a near-feral kitten when I trapped him. He was terrified of anyone other than my husband and myself, but very at ease and loving with us. Oskar was never a grouch until we lost his big brother Pumpkin. Oskar was also a kitty protector. Any time we had to take one of the cats to the vet, the first step was to put Oskar in the bathroom. Otherwise he'd come after you to rescue the cat being pushed into the carrier. When Elvis ran after Kitty, I ran after Elvis... and Oskar ran after me. He put holes in me while snarling and hissing. If I was watching a video of a cat in distress during a rescue, Oskar would hop up and start pawing my hands to defend the other cat. Both Pablo and Oskar had no problem accepting other cats, and we have photos of them snuggling together and with others. RIP Oskar (Aug2021) and Pablo (Nov2022); Mommy and Daddy miss you.

The sweetest cat I've ever owned is my tortoiseshell, Caramel. She is just an absolute angel baby. She's 6 years old and never really had an tortitude. She meows a lot to get my attention when she wants to play or get pets but that's it. She's the best behaved cat and so super sweet and purrs all the time! She's really smart too. My tuxedo girl is much more sassy but also a big time snuggle bug. I love my two girls more than anything. 💕

Every tuxedo cat I've had has been the chillest cat. They're so tolerant, and just chill. No other word to describe it but chill. My tabby gets into mischief, but my grey cat isn't aloof, he's very loving and always wants to be in the same room as me.

7:37 - 8:20 THIS. It reminds me a lot of both gender stereotypes and human personality-typing methodologies like MBTI, astrology, etc. that rely heavily on subjective perceptions/interpretations/opinions.
When people expect someone (whether that's a person, cat, dog, etc.) to act/behave/be a certain way based on commonly accepted stereotypes or personal biases about sex, gender, race, ethnicity, breed, hair / fur color, sexual orientation, body type, etc., they'll often watch for and acknowledge validating patterns--especially when there's a whole community/culture built around those flawed assumptions (e.g., entire subreddits devoted to "voids", "INFJs", etc.).
People just can't reliably be trusted to provide objective data/reporting on abstract concepts like personality.
Look how many changes regarding personality have been baked into the DSM-5 over the years.
Clearly, it's very challenging even for educated professionals / specialists in the scientific community to agree on this stuff, haha.

My mom's all gray cat named Squeaks certainly wasn't shy at all. He was one of the friendliest, most outgoing people loving cats I've ever been around. He lived for 17 years, and his sister, Sadie was a torti, and I will confirm she did have tortitude in abundance.

Interesting video. Appreciate the effort you put in to these. I have owned seven cats in my life, all female. All different personality. I fed a stray tortoiseshell off and on for three years. She was not afraid of us, but would not let us touch her. April 2022, she showed up at my door with four kittens. When mama disappeared, I caught the kittens. Colbie, gray and white mackerel tabby, is the leader. She can be aloof or affectionate. When she wants her way, she gets it. Panda is a tuxedo cat. She is affectionate most of the time and loves to be brushed and petted. Until she doesn't. LOL Ebony is all black. She is affectionate and loves attention. If the cats are doing something they shouldn't, Ebony is usually the one instigating it. LOL

Yeah, you are right. At least when it comes to the cats I lived with or shared some time during my life.
When it comes to living with cats, all were males.
The red(orange)-white cat-man, Harry was so gentle and a little dizzy. He never could even harm a fly.
"My" two "black" (- in fact they both had a little red colour when you took a closer look, especially in the sunlight) cat-men both were very sensible and could well show if they didn't want something as well, as when they wanted something. (Of course every cat is different and it always has to do with the personal relationship...). Sunny was/IS my son to me. Black longhaired cat-man.
He sadly died on 31.01.2023. I miss him but all the others as well each day. They were and are my family. When it comes to Sunny I was quite experienced and we were on "eyesight level" from the first moment he was brought to me surprisingly. He accepted me as a big, hairless (mostly) strange cat-man who walked on two legs.
Edi, the cat-man I grew up with, my brother, was an "old style siamese". Okay, siamese cats are very special cat race... . He really WAS (is and will always be) my older brother. He died at the age of 22 and was two years old when I was born. He always treated me as a cat-man. When I was a child he even brough me a living mouse into the living room where I was. Then he calmly sat down in the door frame and watch my "hunting skills"... . The mouse didn't have any escape route sadly for the mouse.
Edi was very very intelligent. He would know when I came home (my parents both were working and I was the first to get back home after school) and started meowing. He had the loudest cat voice I ever have heard. I could hear him from 50m away outside the house (our apartment was directly under the roof in the 3rd floor). Or when my dad would come home with his car he recognized the sound of the car more than 50m away with all windows closed and start meowing... . For example.
He was free roaming for 13 years until we moved to a place where he couldn't go outside any more.
And he could jump nearly 3m high and loved to chase (and eat) rabbits. But at home he would NEVER ever harm someone and had the loudest purring I have ever heard and felt in my whole life, too. When I became a teenager and was sad, he would lay down beside my head and comfort me for as long as it took for me to feel better. Pure magic as all cats!
And a female cat I new, - I don't know how they are called exactly in english. They are sometimes called "Glückskatzen" in german language, had white fur with many different spots in red/orange, black and brown... . She was very gentle and would come to anyone and sit on you for hours. A very gentle and very open minded cat, Mimi. She trusted anyone and the fun fact is, that one day she was in the garden of the house I lived in as a teenager. And she stayed. She chose an older neighbor woman with her apartment as her place to stay but also went outside if she wanted to. She was so trustful that she even was away for some weeks and nobody knew where she was... . Until one day some kids brought her back. The kids came from school and they just took her (- without doing any harm) and took her with them. She was fine but as far as I remember the kids would hide Mimi from their parents and after one day the parents saw Mimi, they asked the kids to bring her back to the place where they took her with them and to ask the people in our street if somebody knew this cat. Of course we did. Everybody in the neighbourhood knew Mimi. 😊
Best wishes to all good gentle and loving beings! ... And have I mentioned? I LOVE CATS!!!

Our adopted little girl is half Tabby half Egyptian Mau. Her personality is shy and timid around strangers. She will tolerate my wife accepting scratches only for a short time and only when she chooses. On the other hand she is very loving and affectionate to me and loves to sit or sleep in my lap.
That darn cat is very vocal!!! She is always "talking" to both of us with a large variety of distinctive calls and "words". She can be very demanding and will let us know when she wants something LOL.

I've fostered tortie cats for about 20 years. I have two male black cats, a bobtail spotted tabby, a bobtail grey and another grey.
The torties have been the "queens" of the house. They have been outgoing, but very particular about everything, from who can pet them to where they sleep , (Esmerelda must sleep under the covers and only on my right side). where they want to eat and which other cats are part of the "in" crowd. The torties have been very affectionate, but they let you know immediately when the petting is over - there is no transition. "pet me pet me...leave me alone!"
Both black males are more laid back than all the female cats. They like attention and affection and are generally lap cats. The bobtails are interesting - a feral mama had her kittens in my garage. She was babtail. The girls - both bobtail are very vocal, exceptionally smart and are smaller than the rest of the litter. The grey female not bobtail is a bit shy and seems to be closer to being wild like mama, but will socialize with some people.

Our first cat was a calico and she came along when our daughter was about 2 years old. She was a very lovable cat but could get cranky with our daughter, probably because our daughter would grab her and hug her. When our calico was about 5 years old we got two male tuxedo cats. Those boys were afraid of strangers but loved us three humans. Our calico ruled the roost though. After the last tuxedo passed on, we got a black 4-week old abandoned kitten who had tabby markings when he was little. It’s hard to see those markings now. He is bonded to my husband (mainly because I was still mourning my sweet tuxedo boy), but he treats him like a sibling and bites him often in play. He treats me much differently, more like a mother as he rarely bites me. If he does bite he doesn’t hurt me, it’s more that he wants my attention. We have loved all our cats as if they’re family!

Love the fact there’s so many videos lately! My bunny boy cat, Maow, was the most immediately affectionate cat I’ve ever met. I found him outside and he was in really bad shape but he still trusted me so much. I found the whole situation rather unbelievable.
I’ve also had a black kitty, Wesley, since he was about 6 months old and today for the first time he took a nap on my lap :))) he turns 3 on December! He only likes to receive affection on his terms and it’s something I’ve had to learn to respect. It’s hard being patient when you want to smother them with kisses 😅

I've had around two dozen cats in my life but the litter I adopted 13 years ago was the first time I've had orange cats. There were originally 4 orange males, and they've definitely been the most mischievous cats of my life. But super intelligent so my experience doesn't bear out the dumbness thing. I would say more curious, active, and bossy than other cats.
The one tortie I've had is positively filled with tortietude so that fits.
The three black cats I've had have all three been particularly loving and affectionate.
These numbers are too small to really say, though. I don't think they're statistically significant.

He also is very loving but a polar opposite of his little running mate! He is definitely the alfa cat, constantly needs stimulation. He fetches an returns, knows basic language, right now he's trying his best to master round door knobs. He doesn't like any upholstered furniture only hard surfaces, never tolerate your lap but loves affection an will lick your arm or face until its raw.

My 2 males are orange tabby cats, they are very affectionate, listen well, playful, talkative and love snuggles. My female black cat, is very sweet but much more independent than the boys. She is fine being off in the house alone for quite awhile, the boys are attached to us. Anywhere we are, they are. The boys are more like snuggly dogs. My female only listens when she wants to, the males always come when called and listen to commands.

My gray cat is the most laid back fella ever! I have two orange cats. The male is mild and sweet. The female is a little brat and only loves me. My tortie is always looking for something to get in to. She’s my little explorer. My calicos are my little mamas and regularly issue discipline to the others. I did not realize that cats saw in the full spectrum of colors. I thought only humans, birds and bees saw all colors. With that said, I don't think cats care about coat color, but we have owned several Black Cats (my personal favorite) and they seem to have more mischievous personalities. One of my former black kitties somehow knew what time I was supposed to get up in the morning. If I tried to sleep in, he would jump down on my head from the head board of the bed, walk across my body, sink his claws into my window shade and give it a yank, consequently causing the shade to roll up like a scroll and the sun to blind my closed eyes! That little Stinker of a cat lived to a ripe old age of 19-years!

They both got more affectionate in their old age sitting on my lap, but only for a bit when they've had enough and go to their other favorite spot. My orange boy Pete is very affectionate, and flips the windows blinds when I pull in the driveway. He always greats me at the door and loves my lap! Maybe a bit needy as he can't wait til bedtime when he lays next to me with his head inside my elbow pit all night long. Sometimes I have to move him so I can get in bed first! I have 3 black cats from the same tabby mother; 1 is a boy and his little sisters are 4 months younger than he is and they all have different personalities. The most timid is one of the girls; yet she is the most talkative. The most outgoing is her sister who is also the sweetest and has a fascination with boxes and cupboards. The boy likes to play the hardest and seems to require my attention the least but when he does he seems to need it the most urgently. To go anywhere with one or even two of them is madness; they keep crying but so long as they are all together they are happy as can be.

my little medium fur length tortie/calico is full of personality, extremely smart, and she is very much a little princess and a bit bossy but still sweet.
my other kitty is a lot younger and a short furred tabby cat, extremely cuddly, goofy (i swear she's part muppet) and bit on the dumb side.

In addition to having cats ourselves, we care for feral colonies. After spay/neuter, we try to get them to trust us enough to be able to get them to the vet if needed. For the most part, this is easier with males than females. The torties and calicos do remain more feral than the tuxedos, solid blacks, and tabby females.

My little Luna is a British Long Hair tortoise shell bordering on fluffy furball haha. I have only had her for a month but she can be a bit timid and shy, aloof but also loving and sweet. Being female she is more feisty, she bites my hands but I think that is in play and not in a nasty way. I bought her a new brush today actually, one with a soft and metal side plus a comb due to her long hair. Amazingly enough she loved me brushing her with the hard metal brush and even let me brush her tail, usually she won't let me stroke her tail.
Luna won't sit on my lap but when she is curled up on the sofa she lets me lay next to her and cuddle her. Being a new cat parent and having rescued her last month this is all new to me so I am not a cat expert. She is definitely coming out of her shell and loves playing with one specific toy with me. I definitely feel like I am getting some new parts of her personality every few days with her being so new.
BTW, thanks for all these videos, it must be a lot of work and preparation, it is appreciated, you have helped so much with my little lovely Luna!

Fast forward 2 years later, I ended up rescuing 3 cats with 2 I tried to rehouse, but potential owners were not the best, so I got them back. Fast forward 4 years later and they have been with me ever since. It is NOT ideal, but I fell in love with them anyways.. Enjoy your new furbaby. I can confidently say I have NO regret in "trying" them out as a pet. They are amazing little creatures. I only wish I had 4 sets of hands, as I am the ONLY care giver in their lives. All the best to you and your Luna girl.

My tortie (who sadly had to recently be PTS at 17 due to her failing health) was very sassy and stubborn, but also very loyal. My male grey cat is much more shy and skittish, so they fit their colour stereotypes pretty closely. I got both as kittens and they were raised the same

I have four female cats all from the same litter, a black long hair, an orange short hair, a tricolor short hair and a white (turning gray) short hair with blue eyes. The black one likes to interact but only for short periods, the orange does not interact but likes to stay close. (she is considerably smaller than her sisters), the tricolor clings to me and does not like to be separated, the white one does not like to be touched or petted. I also have another orange girl that showed up when she was about 6 months old, she is friendly but not all that interested in interacting and finally my big orange boy that I had to bottle feed from the day he was born. He started living with the five girls at about 3 weeks old, now at 8 months old he is the biggest and walks around like he is king.. If six of them in the house isn't enough I also have my two garage cats an orange mama and her diluted orange boy.. They are both affectionate and very talkative. All 8 are spayed/neutered...
All this started in August of 2022 prior to that I had never had a cat... Never knew what I was missing....

Clearly people have strong emotions about cats aside from their coloring. We fawn over a kitten, but not a panther. It seems like humans could have much internal bias about coloring too. Teasing out human perception from actual feline traits would be extraordinarily difficult. I suppose we could dye cats and let other observe them and try to guess their real coat. 😅

I don't think coat has much to do with it. I have been around 3 "bad" cats all brought in as kittens all female. However, some of my most loving cats have been female too (I'm almost 50 and we had a lot of cats throughout my life) I have a tortie now which is the sweetest little girl in the world. All male cats i have been around have all been good boys. Even one that was about 4 when I took him home for a trial run and completely feral. It wasn't easy the first month but he is the sweetest boy now.

From experience, black cats are super intelligent. I don't get cats by coat depending on what I want as a personality, but of 3 black cats that I've interacted with a lot (one male and 2 females), they show traits that I haven't seen elsewhere. The male cat adopted litters of the female cat and tended to them as the mother should (aside from nursing), while the grey tabby mother couldn't care less. My current female black cat is figuring out stuff, and has allerted me a few times of my food being ready (forgotten while it cooked), stove having stayed on, no more water, no more food, woke me up when my alarm didn't ring, and she's the only one who figured out how to open drawers, wardrobe doors and cabinets. My mom's female black cat acts as a pack leader and has alerted at least twice when one of the other cats got locked outside. My experience with orange cats so far... isn't great. My current big orange boy almost accidentally scratched my eyes out when he was little. My experience with tuxedo male cats... is that they're VERY tolerant, and VERY cuddly. BUT, they're tolerant up to a certain point. I've had a tuxedo boy who was laid on by small kids (my kid sister, mostly), and hugged tight and all that, and then one day he snapped and bit her face, and then he wasn't tolerant anymore. Also, that one would come to lay on our laps as soon as we sat down, it was nice but kind of troublesome. I've had a tortie who would LOVE to lay on my lap when I was on the toilet, purring and drooling. My current brown tabby female is a cuddlebug, even though she started as the most scared of kittens when I got her. She often lays between my legs when I go to bed and stays there unless I push her off. I don't really have that much experience with other coat colors otherwise

From what I’ve seen character traits and mannerism are definitely heritable. Black cats seem to be the sweetest (although so many cats are) and brown tabbies the most social to humans. Orange males from nh rescue days seemed to be the most timid for some reason (the unsocialized ones(

I've had many cats over the years (I'm closing in on being 60). No, cat color nor sex affects their personalities. I've had sweet cats in all colors and sexes. Same with mean, aloof, and whatever else you think of. Since I don't think that way, I'm not shaping my cats into any mold. I learn their personality and adjust to them. I noticed that the words you used to describe female cats are words people prefer to describe women with. Due to the internet people find these non-scientific rumors and join the parade. It's sad really.

Yes, I was aware that I used some stereotyped words around female cats-it was between that and intentionally avoiding them, which would not quite communicate the patterns that have been reported (which are, themselves, in part based in stereotypes). I'll keep this in mind for the future, at any rate.

  • @hallaloth3112
    @hallaloth3112 7 місяців тому +1

So, we don't really see that sort of correlation though in any other species. . .sex affecting behavior absolutely, but not color. Personally I think that just because a color is linked to a sex gene, doesn't mean the personality is linked to the color. . .but rather the sex gene.
I have an orange lad who is the most tolerant cuddlebug you could ever meet. Our darker tabby? Very much has made it clear his 'adventuring' days are over and he wants to be an indoor cat and please don't him outside except maybe the closed in backyard. He is much more outgoing towards PEOPLE than our orange lad is though. And our orange lad is one smart kitty.

Sorry about that. For some reason, solid black and solid white cats' purported personality traits don't seem to come up that often in these discussions, so I didn't have much to say about them, but I could have done better and acknowledged that while including some pictures of these cats as well.
