Congratulations on being up to date! I'm pleased to see how smoothly your transition is going. This is fantastic news. Thanks, always, for sharing!
This is the type of M1 or computer video I like. Not a bunch of benchmarks but actually using the device and reporting the experience
Could you do a comparison between Logic Pro on the new M1 and the other DAWs? It would be nice to understand how much Apple optimized the software for their new hardware.
Thanks for the update; been seeing some of your M1 vids for a bit. This is really something to look forward to; I'm copping an M1 mini in about three weeks, and I can't wait. I appreciate the tips and info!
I had some issues with a MOTU AVB switch last week, support has been great. They were quick to reply and very helpful.
Glad to hear you are loving the M1 Mini. I'll probably be upgrading my Mini soon.
I was on the fence but for the price and power I’m gonna pull the trigger in one now.
Thanks for the review
I'm a Motu interface user as well. I have a Motu 16a that I have had for 6 years. Excellent product! I would recommend it to everyone! I started to notice issues with the TRS analog inputs having drastic differences in voltage level. I contacted the Motu tech support. They were very quick in response and told me to send my 6yr old device to them and they will replace it with a new one/refurbished one for only $99 US dollars+shipping. Out of warranty! No big deal! I'm so happy with Motu and the quality that they stand by. Thank you!!!!
Waiting for mine to arrive, can't wait... I never thought I'll be getting the Mini, but after running the same tests on my system as other youtubers did on mini, the mini runs 3-4 times as many tracks/plugins than my system can. I did have to order bunch of adapters, hubs, external HDD chassis etc to plug in all my stuff, but I like to thing it is "modular" now haha
I just switched yesterday... and must say, i an impressed. The speed is amazing
I upgraded last week to the M1 Mac mini. Amazing machine. All my plugins and RME Ufx working perfectly.
I’m too scared to do this...we upgraded to Big Sur and lost 2 days trying to get things to work again!!
Yeah I downgraded to Catalina for the time being.
@@noahbecerra how can you downgrade to catalina on M1?
@@hithere4289 You cannot. Big Sur is the first version of macOS that is compiled for ARM.
@@luciascarlet okay
Tested out Big Sur on my laptop. It’s cool but it’s not ready to me just yet. Add the M1 chip and yeah.. idk 🤷🏽♂️
I am really glad for honest and up to date opinion. I run my studio on the full spec Intel Macbook Pro at the moment. Fortunately, it's a company (kudos employer) machine, so this kinda helps to decide what to purchase later on.
I hope that in long-term (and I ain't generic Apple fan), Apple Silicon will push the performance up all around either itself or by means of competition = good for us :)
I use Reaper on a Dante network to/from my console. I ran a loopback test with ReaInsert and added compensation. It's like using a Studer A80 with an analog console now. Incredible.
I never understood people that can't wait to jump to a new thing but hey, good thing these people exist, so I can see videos like this one and understand that I need to wait for about a year before I buy a MacMini M1, which is the plan for 2021...or 2022...but I think 2021 it will be sorted.
I'm one of those people that can't wait to jump to new things. Good god I love this M1 Mac Mini. I'm coming from a 2014 maxed MBP and it's SO MUCH BETTER in every single way possible, and it only cost $700. Zero regrets.
I bought it. Everything works perfectly. I’m glad I didn’t wait
I did the same, and the headaches have been very few. I can't wait to see what they do with the bigger Macs.
I'm pulling the trigger on Apple Silicon later this year.... Excited!
The Desktop version of RX8 works perfectly for me. We have almost the same machine. It also works fine in Logic if that helps. Melodyne works on desktop and in Logic.
This the video i needed to see. Happy day
Thanks, this was a very useful peek into my own future :) My 2009 Mac Pro is effectively almost useless now due to obsolescence, and the only reason I haven't replaced it is that I had a break from music production. I want to start up again soon, and I'm looking at the Mini M1 as the best option. As you say, more research is definitely needed! I run Cubase, for example, and I need to check that works OK.
Amazing that M1 chip. Thanks for sharing!
One thing that gets overlooked, is the low power consumption with the Mac Mini. I think it’s 5 watts or something. I love how quiet it is as well. So far I’ve had no issues with what I’m running through it.
I Use a Synology DS918+ NAS with 4 x 8Tb HD in RAID 10, giving me 16Tb supersave diskspace, there are about 50.000 WAV songs on, also my multi tracks and mixes are there, plus everything from software and administration, and using now about 4Tb diskspace. U can use aggregation linking from the 2 x 1Gb/s lan ports to get more bandwith. If you have a switch that support that. And it's in my studio it's quieter than my iMac's fans.
ACKSHUALLY - technically your room won't be fan-less as long as you're using a Mini because the Mini has a fan, though to be fair it's so ridiculously quiet that it might as well not be there. I moved over to an M1 Mini and I have zero regrets! Love this thing.
I would recommend to go for the nvme solution. It is really fast also for Video Editing and portable if you need to record on locations with a laptop. Then you still can do your backups over the network to another slower less expensive NAS. I did some speed tests and the M1 using Thunderbolt is really superfast.
I have my Macbook M1 since 4 weeks and started switching my studio setup on it like 2 weeks ago. It works really great so far. Pro Tools, Waves Plugins as well as Native Instruments, Izotope and most other Plugins + of course Logic run very fast and stable.
I tried out a few big Logic sessions, which my previous MacBook (i7, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd...) couldn't run smoothly anymore. On the M1 - no problem. Really awesome performance. The only things not working is very few plugin installers (McDsp) and UAD Plugins + the Apollo Interface. I just use my NI Maschine as the interface for now. I even thought about getting rid of the Apollo tbh.
So M1 is a very good choice for making music. The Mac mini might be a great option too.
Did you bought the 8gb or 16gb version
@@poisondna 16gb
I'm interested in this too. Thanks for taking the leap for me, lol.
i would like to ask you if the motu avb (or every avb) interface can work in macos without any driver installed with ethernet connection?
@whiteseastudio The OWC Express does have a fan on it, I own one. But you're right that this is super fast, relatively quiet, and you can actually stripe multiple enclosures together if you need larger storage. Also, if you were to ever upgrade to a true Mac Pro, the nvme sticks are more forward-compatible.
Which Mac Pro do you have? I have a 16-core 2019 Mac Pro and it's completely silent! I'm very excited about the new Silicon Mac's myself but i'm waiting on the more powerful one's. Happy New Year! 🎆
I want to dual boot my MacPro but thought it involved resetting the logic board? (I'm a 40 year PC user, I use Apple for music and don't touch anything just in case - help!)
Great video! I wanted to chip in regarding storage, as I am always searching for the best solution as well.
I have OWC products and love them, so I purchased a big 32gb Thunderbay with TB3. I had problems, not at first, but they came on strong after about 6 months. Constant Kernel Panics on an iMac, and same with the Mac mini I replaced it with. The code always pointed to attached storage. When I started searching google, I found tons of reports of the same thing. Think the Achilles heel is the Soft RAID software the drives use. If I remember right, OWC claimed that there was a problem in the OSX code that was basically preventing it from working as it should. So we were all waiting for the OSX update that would hopefully address / fix it.
I don’t know how common this is, and I still have some other great OWC products, but it was so frustrating for me for about a year before I just sold it. Maybe just search “Soft RAID kernel panic” and see if it persists.
I know the Thunderbay RAIDs tout lightning quick speeds, but honestly, I was testing and found the T5 to be a bit quicker. I wasn’t alone in this either.
I wanted to get a NAS, but the cloud storage software I use doesn’t offer free backup for NAS drives. So my current solution is to work off quick T5 drives for video and music, then I have two attached LaCie d2 8tb drives for backup and photo storage. These aren’t the quickest, but still very respectable. Most of all, they are dead quiet. Biggest, quietest storage I could find that doesn’t cost a lot.
I really don’t mean to bash OWC, I just know how challenging it can be to find the right solution.
Cheers, and keep up the great content!
Please talk about your use of the AVDECC controller software I looking at this for my windows box with intel tsn card seperate would be cool
Consider Synology NAS for storage, put it in your machine room or whisper rack (doesn't have to be loud). I use it for all of my time machine backups, storage, and sharing. You can use share or file request links much like you can with dropbox. I have a domain name with dynamic dns setup for my network, you and your clients can access from anywhere, even remote backup to your Synology NAS at home.
You must've took a RISC to do this ;)
lol
Wow :D
I'm going to cache my chips an go...
@@PrinceWesterburg must’ve cost an ARM and a leg to buy it XD
@@PrinceWesterburg lol
Great video! Thanks! This just confirms that I made a good decision in buying an M1 Mac for my creative process. Groetjes uit België!
Can you do a video of the Sonnox Oxford noise reduction apps (Oxford Debuzzer, Declicker, Denoiser)? I own those, would like to see how they compare to the Izotope Rx, and compare to the Waves Restoration plug-ins (X-Noise etc).
Any updates ? Any chance for an updated review ?
I have the Apogee ONE and it worked fine and still does on my ANCIENT 2011 MB Pro, but I CANT get the new M1 Silicone Chip MB to recognise it! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated because even Apogee "support" and Apple Support cant get it to recognise the device. Thanks so much in advance
I have not criminal issue with Reaper (Rosetta) on M1, when i press spacebar for pause - arrange is playing 1-2 sec after pressing. do u have the same issue?
i just switched to M1, my macbook air from 2016 couldn't handle my projects anymore. I am a ProTools and logic user. However, ProTools (2019) doesn't run on Big Sur. So i'm thinking to upgrade my PT license. It's not officially supported on Big Sur, but at least i can open my projects.
I'm a bit confused though, because you're using fabfilter. To my understanding FabFilter was still testing their software on BigSur. But i'm happy to see that it works. And i can also conclude that the official statements from the developers aren't up to date.
I used to use a Mac for audio work, but I finally gave up as Apple kept breaking my audio interfaces with OS-X updates. The last update broke aspects of my DAW and USB audio interface for many months. I just don't have as many issues with running my DAW on a Windoze box. Hey, if it floats your boat - row on man...
I dearly want to update to Big Sur on my 2018 i7 MBP but I just can't, literally half of my essential plugins are not confirmed to be Big Sur compatible yet. Thinking I'll upgrade to M1X MBP later in the year when everything is compatible.
Btw as far as the storage goes... I ordered a dual HDD chassis with usb C plug (USB 3.1), made out of aluminium, with a fan to cool it. It can work in RAID setup or independent, up to 20TB, and it was 50$. It even looks ok, not one of those toaster looking HDD docks. So that covers my backup and storage for stuff where I don't need a fast ssd performance.
I can't say YYYEEESSSSS enough times man! I did the same! Switched over to a 16GB 1TB M1 and I love iiiiittttttt!!!!!! It took a few days to get fully transitioned over and I still have to use Logic in Rosetta but man is it an amazing machine. I only lost two plugins (Exponential Audio) and unfortunately, they were my best reverbs. But besides that, the only issue is the Slate VMR glitches. It works perfectly just the GUI gets a little wonky. Glad to see you made the switch too!
Exponential Audio Exodus working great on my M1. Shouldn't the other plugins for the EA work as well then?
@@cal1music65 what DAW are you using? It’s strange because he said he can’t get RX8 to work and it wotlrks fine in Logic and in my desktop version.
@@matt_nyc_audioengineer mainly Logic. My experience so far is when the installation works the plugin works too. I have one exception which is mcdsp.
@@cal1music65 Ya I can't get Nimbus or R4 to work from Exponential. I know they are on the machine because when I use the desktop version of RX8 I can see them. In Logic, I don't even get an Exponential Audio folder in the plug-in menu. However, I can see them in the plugin manager. I also cant get SSD5.5 (Steven Slate Drums) to work. It installed fine just loads a black screen when you try to use it. It's cool, all the plugin makers will have it figured out soon. ARM is here to stay and many of their customers are waiting. Having the compatibility issues with Big Sur I think also helps the M1 cause because it's going to make them work even harder because it's two issues, not just one.
@@awesomeofaz Thanks man! But from what I was told this is for Intel based Mac's using Big Sur not ARM machines.
Going to wait out to see if they upgrade the M1 in the mini later this year to a M1X or M2. Don’t want to be scorched by a prototype
Just think, this is an entry level Mac.
New M1X coming to the 16” MBP soon!
Not as impressive when you start looking at the price but still, very impressive that he could switch this early.
I expected at least a year to get some of the issues out. Turns out there are barely any. That's the most impressive part for me for sure.
As much as I love my linux/windows systems, I am glad Apple is the one really pushing the ARM hard.
@@annekedebruyn7797 it’s not that expensive. Look at speed tests between these low end Macs and more expensive PCs. And Macs are pretty trouble free. Especially compared to Windows. I’ve been using Macs professionally since the 90s. They may cost more but they pay for themselves because they just work.
@@DavidRavenMoon Im not saying it's expensive but it being amazing for an entry level mac for audio when the lowest option is nearing 1k (incl. tax) is not that special.
It's just that Apple's entry is not shit anymore unlike their old intel based ones.
Im thinking of getting one too for the studio.
@@annekedebruyn7797 it kicks a lot of more expensive computers asses. Wait until the M1X is out. Apple has gotten really good at designing these SOCs. We can thank the iPhone for that.
Too fast dude ! :)
So much information here about your system and great ideas and it great that you are totally excited :)))
So may I ask you go over these topics again in future videos- soon - and slower :) with a bit more detail for us slower newbies...
Many thanks and belated Happy New Year

For your storage, get a 10GbE Thunderbolt dongle, and a Synology NAS with a 10GbE expansion card, as well as NVMe caching. You'll absolutely love the ease of use, speed and data redundancy.
Hi but 16gb if ram is it suffisant? I'm soud engineer but producer to...
M1 Mac Mini base model owner here. It's replacing a mid 2012 macbook i7 and holy shit the difference is day and night , had to go back to the mid2012 after using the M1 for a while and couldn't get used to its comparatevely subpar performance . Except for ADSR plugin manager , all my plugins have been working great (including mwlodyne)
Hello Wytse and congratulation for your channel and your passion! Only a question about storage: are you sure the OWC 4M2 is fanless? I checked and saw there is a cooling fan... maybe it is silent but... I guess there is! Or I searched the wrong model?
I use a NAS and sync the „soundfolder“ at the NAS to cloudstorage.
I had an Hackintosh for 3 years now, for the last year one based on a Ryzen 3700x with 32Gigs of Ram, just this week I got my base model Mac mini and damn even with just 8 Gigs of Ram it blazes through everything, apps like affinity photo start almost like twice at fast and I was using an NVME SSD in the Hack too
I think I'll do the same but I may wait until we get some more mature revisions 👍
Really good feature nowadays is cloud/NAS storage software supporting client-side caching. I'm now using Google Drive File Stream (it's available now on regular GMail accounts) on my 13-inch MacBook Pro (2015) with 256 GB SSD and I really like the workflow.
Google Drive is mounted in my operation system under /Volumes/GoogleDrive and I don't need to sync a lot of folders manually - they're just all here mounted with intelligent caching from Google that keeps frequently and recently used stuff in the cache and cleaning up unused stuff automatically out from my SSD. Of course you can manually select folders for offline usage that will not be removed at all.
As far as I know Synology Drive (for Synology NASes) support this feature too so you can build your own NAS storage and use local SSD caching for the best performance. Also they have models that could be attached directly by the wire to a computer.
At the future I plan to use the hybrid scheme where my main storage is a NAS coming with software with caching support and with ability to install plugins/extensions for syncing/backing up either to Google Drive or Backblaze/external drive/some other backup solution.
Maybe some of these workflows might be helpful to you too.
Hey thanks for you feedback in the M1, I went ahead and ordered the M1 Mini 16/512. Can you advise me on which external drive you use for your audio tracking please? Thanks Johnny
Thkanks for the info. It’s very valuable (:
I am sorry for your loss.
Izotope plugins works fine on my mini m1. Have only tested Elements version of RX though, and Im running it in logic.
Does anyone know if Izotope Ozone is running under Rosetta2?
I'm really excited for Apple Silicon but I'm going to wait a year or so until Ableton Live is at least compiled for it along with more mainstream/big plugins. I don't mind having to run some plugins in Rosetta but having to run the entire DAW in Rosetta is a deal-breaker for me at the moment. Looking to get the 16" MacBook Pro when it's out.
I'm currently in the tough decision fight of, going for an iMac or a Mac mini... but I think I'll wait for a possible second M1 Mac mini (a non "entry-level")
Some have Experience problems on Bluetooth connections, check that too before switching completely to mac mini
Did you upgrade from the M1 Mac Mini to the Mac studio? and ,,why? if so,, Is midi latency still an issue on the mini?
Are you running your DAW through Rosetta? And, how many approximate % of your plugins are running through Rosetta?
My Izotope stuff is working on my M1 MacBook Pro. It was a little clunky for all of the suite to finally start showing up in my DAW (Logic). But the standalone RX8 is working fine. For what it's worth, I ended up installing on one user account and had to create a new user account (because of dumb reasons I don't remember haha). Maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe create a spare admin account if you don't have one, and install it from there. I'm living this M1 MacBook. It's a BEAST!!! \m/

Would love to see an update on this now that some of the biggest DAWs have released updates that don't rely on the compatibility layer and actually use M1 directly (Ableton is the one I know for sure did this already)

Focusrite 8i6 3rd Gen
M-audio Air 192/14
Motu M4

Audient EVO 8
Audient iD 14 MKII

No problemo with RMe Fireface 800, no problemo with MH Lio 3D. My only issue is with Icon Platform and my Touchscreen monitor.
@whiteseastudio
Hi Wietse, i don't know if you tried this yet. But for Sidecar to work you need to enable "hands-off" on both devices.
Wifi needs to be enabled on both devices to actually connect, i could however turn off wifi on the Mac Mini after sidecar was connected while USB C remained connected, but that doesn't work everytime.
Goodluck have fun, i am enjoying my Mac Mini which is same as yours.
Though i am not yet impressed by how it handles big patches in VCV Rack.
But there are already people working on an ARM version of VCV Rack, so all looks promising!
:D
Not a mac user but eying those as well now...
Gona wait , a friend has a Mq Mac Mini and it’s been a nightmare, lots of plugins don’t work and sessions that runs fine on his 24 core Mac Pro, struggles massively with screen lags.
can you explain how to use cracks?
Hi! Have you tried any of the GEM plugins of OVERLOUD?
How'd you get the SWS extensions to work?
Hey, I recently got the Blackmagic 4 slot sata 2.5” drive bay! And I run 4-4TB as my storage and my samples with a raid to both of them so I never loose them if one dies. Also fanless because it reads strictly SSDs and connects via one thunderbolt port. It is amazing and works wonders for me. I’d highly check it out.
+1 to the blackmagic dock. it is a really quality solution and 2.5" form factor is generally higher storage limits for cheaper than M2.
you mentioned once that you were considering the RME interface over the MOTU?? did you change your mind?
Great Video. Sorry, but OWC Express 4M2 is not fanless. Am I missing something?
Have you reviewed the Logic Pro X CPU Optimization | 2021 | M1 System Tips by Mark Payne. Mentioning only for reference in understanding Apple M1 with Logic Pro.

I have a mac trashcan 2013 12 core. Is this faster? I am at the end of a project and the latency is reduculous with 1 hdx card and a sonnet all ssd. So I was thinking of switching to mini m1 and the guy at sonnet told me get the intel which all of their customers are raving about etc. So the intel based is the bottom choice on the apple site... Just stuck on WHICH mini to get. But this video is very encouraging. Also I own protools and do not have to rent it... would upgrading to mini force me to upgrade to protools 12? I like 11.latest_stable. This channel rocks
I have a completely different experience :( My audio interface which is a Focusrite Clarett 4pre Thunderbolt isn't recognised, so I temporarily got a USB Solo2i2. Then I'm running Logic Pro X and almost every plugin is working but I have a non-stop spike in my CPU performance and it's overloading pretty easily (I take fewer plugins than to my older 2018 mac mini with 32GB of ram)... So yeah... I hope the audio interface driver will be coming soon and hope that the plugins I'm using will also fully upgraded to be native (currently using mainly, Plugin Alliance, Slate Digital, Waves, Trigger, Soundtoy, neural DSP stuff and other.
total genius; firehose of fucking awesome
So does combining native and Rosetta translated apps introduce latency? Can Rosetta be slowed by non related apps accessing the translation software?
I haven't noticed any additional latency or strain on the CPU. I'm in Logic on a 16GB M1 Mini.
Look at the new OWC Thunderbolt hub for extra ports.
I'd go for the nvme and also backup to cloud service for maximum safety..
izotope plugins also crash for me very often using older systems, i don't know what's wrong with their programming, especially the licensing software seems to cause trouble often. i couldn't open some old projects because i used ozone 8, so i had to delete it and i'll never use it again on this system... back in the day when i used cracked versions, everything was working just fine(similar experience with waves plugins btw) =D rx is great though and didn't cause any issues so far.
Ik heb de airbook met M1 chip en ik kan zonder problemen Izotope RX8 en Ozone 9 installeren en gebruiken.
