  • I recently upgraded to the new Mac Mini M1 after a less than enjoyable few years with a 2018 Mac Mini + external GPU. This week I walk through why I made the switch to the M1 and discuss the pros and cons of the new machine for audio and video production.

Jonseing for one. For nearly a year I've been editing video on my iPad using Lumafusion Pro. Love it. The thought of being able to work with it on a regular computer is very enticing.

Nice one Jon. I got my mi mini to use mainly as a drum recording unit in my drum room networked up to the main iMac. It also houses all my samples using Vienna Ensemble Pro.to share the load with my older gear. You’re right however, you do have to be patient for it to get full powered support from the app developers but opening large 3gb kits is a breeze and no fan noise is just heaven and all for a relatively low price. Enjoy and have a great weekend.👍🏼

You've got me thinking, Nigel! Perhaps I should move the old Mac mini to my drum room along with my Apollo 16. I have a UAD arrow that I could use in the control room as I seldom record more than 2 mics at a time. Hmmmm...

Thank you for this is was super helpful, I was slowly saving for one of the intel Mac Mini's till the heard about the new chip and was waiting for an a producers review. It seems like a no-brainer as soon as the software catches up, Late 2012 Mac Mini is starting to get a bit overwhelmed in larger sessions.

Will do, Simeon. I probably should have held out a little longer as well, but I was growing so frustrated with my graphics card situation and did not feel like dumping another $800-1k into the setup that has caused me such grief. Again, probably user error but I like the simplicity of having everything in one box. So far it has been a performance upgrade.

Best video I've seen on the subject.
I've been using Windows since 'day 1', in mid 99, for music production. Over the years, many people said Macs were the way to go for music, which was probably true for a while.
Anyway, last week I acquired a Macbook M1 Air, and whilst I am impressed with it as a basic laptop, my Ryzen 4800H destroys it when rendering music file. It's not even close. Both cost around a grand - a similar specced Mac would be 3 grand - which makes me think 'why?'
First twenty seconds of the video, I get it. It's the video processing.

I just made the big jump from pc to Mac mini M1 and cannot believe the power in it. FYI, there’s a hub that sits under the unit that has been recently upgraded to accept on-board m.2 SSD sticks, but, not the faster nvme types. Maybe that’s on the horizon but still ssd in that form factor that installs on the underside of the hub chassis is cool

Eyyy glad it works for you! I brought one a few weeks ago and I work in pro tools too but I had so much trouble that I ended up sending it back, kept getting this mad bug where it would use all the 16gb ram and then like 55gb swap ram then crash hahahaha! I guess it’s probably a difference in plug ins used or something. I’ll probably jump back in on the M1 in a year or two once everything is sorted!

I’ve noticed a few more hiccups as I reinstall old plugins. Personally I’m not noticing anything worse than what I was experiencing on my old machine. Plug-in compatibility has been a thorn on my side for years. I wish they would get a handle on that issue.

I think a rarely appreciated drawback of the M1 range of Macs, is the fact that they benefit from a monitor of similar quality. Whilst there are many options for gaming monitors, if one is looking for a 27 - 32" monitor 4K (not ultra wide), LG and others are only recently offering options. The latest LG UltraFine 27UN850 is not widely available (in the United Kingdom as of early March 2021). A sleek USB-C monitor with cable management is what I'm next on the lookout for to complement my excellent new machine.

Great thoughtful comments as always, Ihave been holding off buying the M1 Mac mini as I felt that 16gb would not be quite enough and I was hopeful that Apple would release a new more powerful 32gb or 64gb Mac mini but, my old 2011 27” iMac has become so painful to use, due to the fact I can no longer run the latest OS and consequently it will not run the latest version of Logic and its very very very slow, i decided to grab the M1 16gb 2Tb I figured it will at least get me going again and maybe by 2022 Apple will release a newer more powerful version of the Mac mini with more thunderbolt ports on it. And I can repurpose this Mac mini as a VSL Pro 7 server.

Mac Mini Bluetooth issue is a hardware issue that’s been around for a bit. The antenna is underneath the Mac Mini inside that circular base. Elevate the Mini with a non-metallic stand or base that doesn’t contact the center of that round base. Like a pair of thick markers under the left and right sides. The more space beneath the base, the better.
Another fix is to use a Logitech keyboard and mouse connected through their little dongle.

Another great video Jon. It's getting to be about that time that I should consider upgrading. I think I'm going to try and wait it out until a new MacBook Pro comes out - an SD card slot, HDMI port, and bringing back the Mag lock. My wife just got a brand new M1 MacBook Pro and I feel like I would be disappointed missing those features. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on upgrading internal storage vs. working off of your Samsung drive. I'm also going to be waiting until Finale and all of my SSL and Waves plugins and Helix Native are more reliable than I've heard about.
The church I work at just got an M1 Mac Mini and it's impressive! I just don't know if I'm ready to move to a desktop setup yet.

      @JonMeyer  3 роки тому

Thanks, Alex! This is the first time I've worked off of the internal storage. Honestly, there are too many variables in play to give an honest opinion. I recently upgraded cameras which means different codecs. Everything is new and not yet fully supported, but my gut thinks it has been a subtle improvement. I've always been a desktop guy with a laptop used mostly for business, graphic design, and the occasional remote recording project.

Hi, nice one. btw i didn’t notice any issues with the video, watched it on an apple tv 4k. So, good luck with the mini, I’ve got a mac pro 2019, which I’m happy with. I also traded my 2017 mbp for a new m1 mbp with 16gb ram and a 1tb drive, and i also have that same dock. Since the mac pro is my primary still running catalina, which tbh still seems like the bleeding edge, i’m under no pressure to complete work on the m1 system, but i have done some tests and for the most part it seems good, but it’s really meant to be my portable rig, yet not a lot of travel happening right now

New M1 Mini here...Logic and Final Cut are fast for sure, but it's the integration with peripherals and plugins that is lacking. Doesn't recognize the Boss Katana amp, and there is clicking on playback using the USB-C port to connect my audio interface. Clicking avoided by plugging the audio interface in with a USB-C to USB-A cable instead. Sure is quiet though.

Hi Jon, Thanks for the video. Can I ask your opinion? I have a 2023 Mac mini pro and am experiencing considerable audio bleed. I noticed it when I went to create backing tracks in Logic Pro x, with click and voice-over panned hard left I was hearing it in the right channel. I then tested a system Audio alert, Apple Music, Safari>UA-cam, all with the system audio panned hard L or R, and heard quite a bit of bleed in the opposite channel, via shure e300 in ear headphones and also Sennheiser over ear studio cans, both plugged directly into the audio out on the Mac mini. I've consulted apple and they are denying that the bleed exists. Meanwhile on forums people are saying that this is a known problem and the internal sound cards are subpar. Have you experienced this and do you know of a software or hardware fix for the Mac mini pro? Many thanks.
