- "The most clutch gamer alive." It was supposed to be a joke but somehow this happened- the first 4:55 in Super Mario Bros. and probably the last second-barrier that will ever be broken in this game. When I say "My FIRST run" in this video, I mean my first run ever to get past 1-2 on that pace. The 9 in the top corner of the timer was to keep track of how many attempts I'd done once I started going for the pipe clip in 1-2, so this was my 9th run since I started attempting that trick and my first run that got it successfully.
I can't believe this happened, but I'm very proud of this accomplishment :)

Q: How did you skip the flag coming down in 1-1, 4-1, and 8-3?
A: A very precise jump at the bottom of the flagpole makes the flag not come down. Someone by the name of Sockfolder figured out a somewhat consistent way for humans to do this. Watch this video for more information: • flagpole glitch
Q: Why did you not die when you touched the piranha plants?
A: This is an old game and a lot of the enemy hitboxes aren't in line with the enemy sprites. Look at this picture to see what i mean i.imgur.com/DpY...
Q: How did you get inside the wall in 4-2? Why did the pipe take you to the warp zone? Aren't you supposed to climb the vine?
A: Very precise inputs make it possible to get inside the wall. This lets us change how close mario is to the right edge of the screen and tricks the game into sending you to the wrong place. I do a similar thing in the 3rd room of 8-4. For more info: • How is this speedrun p...
Q: What did you do at the flagpole in 8-2?

Q: How did you jump off the pipe in 8-4?
A: By jumping at a very precise spot on the pipe Mario will actually stand inside of the pipe for 1/60th of a second, and if you press the jump button during this period of time you will jump. More info on this image: i.imgur.com/DpY...
Q: How did you not die to bowser's hammers?
A: Sometimes you simply jump through a gap in the hammers, and sometimes you actually go right through a hammer. This is because the game can't always handle having all those hammers on screen at once, so some of them don't have hitboxes.

Original comment: When I say "First run ever" I mean my first run that got past 1-2 on 4:55 pace. The 9 on the attempt counter is how many 4:55 pace attempts I'd done, soo yeah it only took 9... insane! I don't know how many total I've actually done, but it's probably upwards of 40,000.

The only area that you can reasonably hope to see improved is a better 8-4. If you put the 8-4 in Kosmic's 4:56.462, which has the best 8-4 ever in a run, you get a 4:55.762. There is another framerule in 8-1 that has been saved by a human, but that's *much* too hard to be expected in a future run

On one fateful night in the middle of September
Through the levels Kosmic seemed to glide

He began attempts with this new strategy
What followed, was something divine
After only 9 runs, out of 1-2
Kosmic was tied with the TAS
And somehow, unbelievably
The run continued to last
He got 4-1 pole, he got 4-2 blazit
Even the judges blessed the run
He got the jump over the pipe, and the coin tossed just right
And his first attempt looked like it would be the one
He jumped through the hammer bros, through out some inputs
And clipped the 8-3 pole
He gasped and exclaimed in disbelief
It appeared he could reach his goal
But 8-4 is a level, that destroys runs
With evils around every turn
Kosmic knew he had to clutch it out
And kept going through the level, the urn
He got past the pit, and a very precise trick
He even got past the walljump
In the turnaround room, he must not go to short
Or his run would have been trumped
The wrong warp had worked, in the water he was
Dodging all of the deadly fire
All Kosmic needed was to get past bowser
A good outcome of this, was dire
Bowser had jumped, Mario ran past the chump
And Kosmic had touched the axe
“I CAN NOT BELIEVE IT” Kosmic exclaimed
The record was his at last

4:54 is theoretically possible now with the extra 4-2 frame rule, and 8-1 frame rule. Hopefully this will happen one day! (heck, maybe we can find a way to save a frame rule on 8-2 as well, to match the TAS all the way to 8-4.

@@Beyondthe5thPanel For a MASSIVELY simplified synopsis, there are finite "blocks" of time that you can save in a level. If you finish a level in the middle of a "block", the game will actually delay loading until the end of that "block" before loading the next one.
In speedrunning terms, it means that you can't complete the game any faster by getting single frame improvements in each level. You actually have to find a single level where you can save a "block" of frames to make an improvement.
Yeah it could match the non-cheat tas of this game 😯

This was commented two years ago (as of the time I am writing this) by a verified channel, and only has two replies (including this one, also as of the time I am writing this). This feels out of place. Have another reply.
Just another FAQ about the speedrun, but this time, it’s not by Kosmic. I’ll try to help answer all of the questions that are frequently asked in the comments, for the people that are somehow too illiterate to read a pinned comment and can type one themselves.
Q: He clearly clips through multiple Piranha Plants. He’s hacking!
A: The hitboxes for Piranha Plants are actually incredibly small and only reach to about 3/4 of the plant’s actual height. He manages to avoid the hitbox of the plant, while still touching its sprite, which for those of us that don’t have much coding experience, are different things.
Q: How come I saw a menu pop up at the end with a mouse? He’s using an emulator!
A: That was actually the window for his recording software, AmarecTV. Additionally, emulators are allowed anyway.
Q: He stole this from Badabun!
A: Oh, you sweet innocent child. You really don’t know anything, do you? You really don’t know how horribly and blatantly obvious it is that Badabun’s run is fake? Here, let me explain it to you.
1. The timer is inaccurate.
Although the timer says ~5:12, the actual time is ~4:56. This was, in fact, 2 seconds faster than the fastest record at the time, which was supposedly done by some guy sitting at a heart rate of 87 bpm eating pizza and drinking cola.
2. The timer stops itself.
If you would notice in Badabun’s video, when he ends up beating Bowser, the timer stops on its own, even though it’s normally stopped manually by the runner via some sort of button or switch.
3. Badabun used spliced runs from other speedrunners.
As explained in this video (insert link here), Badabun used spliced footage from other speedrunners to sloppily forge their own, not even editing out visual distortions or inconsistencies.
4. Badabun used impossible strategies for non-TAS players.
If you would observe how Badabun moves at the start of each level, or how they move in the water level, it’s actually Badabun doing a TAS trick called “Fast acceleration”. Fast acceleration is a trick where you press both the left and right buttons at the same time to quickly gain speed. This is physically impossible on an NES controller, which is what they were observed using.
That’s it for the main reasons I can think of off the top of my head, back to the Q&A.
Q: He clearly wall-jumped in 8-4, that’s impossible!
A: Wall-jumping is a frame-perfect trick that allows you to jump a second time during the 1/60 of a second window where Mario is inside of a block when you ram into a wall at max speed.
Q: He paused the timer in the middle, the timer is delayed!
A: The timer is simply visual, the real time is counted by the number of frames.
Q: He skipped multiple worlds, that’s not allowed!
A: He is doing a run called an Any% run, where the only goal is to complete the final objective in as little time as possible. In this format of speedrun, beating every level or world isn’t necessary, or even optimal.
Q: How could he do all this so skillfully, surely this is a robot doing this.
A: Years and years of practice.

@@TheCoroboCorner it's the recording software amarectv that the mouse is over and the menu that pops up. I already do connect my nes controller to the computer in a way, as seen with my input display. There is nothing illegal about that or playing on emulator.

@cgwworldministries The Kessel run is a hyperspace route that is normally ~14 parsecs long. Saying "the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs" means taking a shorter, but more dangerous route through a nearby black hole cluster called the maw. It is also faster than going the normal route of 14 parsecs.

I´m just sad so much people still think this is fake, even when you put so much work into it, i mean SMB runs with glitches exist sing the 5:05 Era and still some people who dont know what BBG/FPG/WW/1-2 Clip is, and call people liars about things they dont know about. UNBELIEVABLE.

You somehow managed to snipe Somewes when no one was expecting you to. Still feel bad for him. Great job nontheless.
PS: If another framerule ever gets saved, Sum of Best will go down to 4:54.88. Maybe one day 4:54 will happen. I am not sure if it ever will, but it might be possible, and if it does happen, it might just be the greatest speedrunning achievement to ever happen if and when it does.
Also in the desc. Q's and A's, one of the Q's is: How did you skip the flag coming down in 1-1 and 4-1? I think you might want to add 8-3 to that.

There are no gears in this game. He wouldn't be able to get lower than a 4:54.28 without using Left+Right, which is banned from RTA runs. Even with Left+Right at the same time, he wouldn't be able to get any lower than 4:54.032.

Do you mean 1 second? 4:53 is impossible without game genie codes and/or left+Right. Billy would only be able to get 4:54.28 or higher on console, and the arcade version is different.

To the people who don’t bother to do research on ANY% runs, let me explain. An ANY% run is a speedrun, that means you use anything necessary in the game to beat it as fast as possible. No outside modifications or anything like that. All in the game.
So all of you idiots saying that the warp pipes to other words are cheating, it’s part of the actual game. Therefore, not cheating.

No doubt Kosmic and Darb's records get posted onto Facebook with some title or post body like "SUPER MARIO BROS. BEATEN IN UNDER 5 MINUTES," and of course since it's Facebook, it's going to get the attention of fairly old folks who probably at least played SMB as a kid but otherwise don't play games anymore [aside from mobile junk like Candy Crush]
They're not going to know what hitboxes or pixel positioning is, so when they see Mareo not die when touching the "angry mushroom guy" or "pipe plant," then there must be cheats or something going on because when they played as a kid they would die if they touched those enemies
