He also served Liverpool quietly in the shadow of others, year after year, yet without him Liverpool would have remained the Mickey Mouse club my uncles told me they always were. Great manager. Doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Everybody talks about Shankly. He took over from Shankly and made Liverpool more successful. He won 6 League Championships, 3 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup and 3 League Cups. He retired the most successful manager in English football history.
I was so fortunate to follow Liverpool from 1978 (Liverpool 7 - 0 Tottenham) and I always say that 1978 team was my team. 1977, 1978 and 1979 for me, were the most magical years to be a Liverpool fan - in my opinion of course.

Ive said this for as long as ive Been alive when it comes to leadership no matter what context the leader appointed should always be someone who doesn't really want the position or ever chased it but will do it through a sense of duty.
I remember reading Kevin Keegan's first book was back in 1977-1978. He mentions how Paisley had his first team talk as manager after Shankley retired and stated that he never wanted the job but felt that out of loyalty to the club he had to agree. Keegan mentions how the players played their hearts out after that to make Paisley succesful.
I was lucky enough to be given a colour copy of a handwritten letter he had sent to someone as a reply. From what I can gather, the letter seems to be a reply about the circumstances of him leaving Bishop Auckland and joining LFC. It was given to me by a passenger on a bus, who had chatted with me weeks ago when I was sat parked up on a shopping service and we had been talking about the sport. I might be a NUFC fan but as a child, I was following Liverpool from around 77, then began following Newcastle in 1980. I only lost interest when Dalglish left & really Liverpool went to the doldrums (where Manchester United are now and were 44yrs ago).
