  • It would be nice to round off my 1983/84 videos with highlights of the European Cup Final, but I know if I did that UEFA would block the video for breach of copyright. Instead, here is a video of pre- and post-match footage, plus half-time and full-time analysis with Steve Rider and Jimmy Greaves, and audio of the decisive penalty shoot-out. Hopefully UEFA will allow this to be shown, and it will be worth watching.

Brian Moore and Saint and Greavsie, all no longer with us. That saddens me a lot.

Agreed to a point, although it can be a little unsettling hearing some of his early work. Probably just a reflection of general attitudes at the time, but he tended to talk in national stereotypes quite a lot in the late-60s/early-70s. He once discussed George Best getting sent off and described him as having an "Irish temper," for instance, which does rather make a modern audience squirm.

Hard to believe it could have been Dundee United there for that final, if they had managed to hold on, get an away goal...cannot ever see that scenario happening again...

Dundee United missed a brilliant chance at 0-0 in the second leg in Rome, if they had scored that, the semi final would've changed profoundly

I read Roma bribed the referee

@@nikreece6295 it wouldn’t surprise me. Anderlecht bribed the referee for their semi final 2nd leg against Forest in the UEFA cup that same season. So it was definitely happening in Europe.

Don't you know that the president of Roma paid 100 million to the referee Vautrot? His son admitted it a few years ago.

I’m not a Roma fan, but Liverpool ‘s goal was clearly not regular. Roma’s goalkeeper was hit by a Liverpool player when holding the ball

One thing I always wondered... why that section of the terrace at the one end was unused?

  • @mrkipling2201

Why it was played in Rome I’ll never know. When Roma won Serie A the previous season, UEFA should have picked somewhere else to play it and give Rome the final the following season maybe. What are your thoughts on it Dave??

I don't know when the venue was picked - presumably before Roma won Serie A. From a footballing point of view it didn't matter in the end, but from what I've read numerous Liverpool fans were attacked after the game. The wellbeing of fans doesn't seem to feature high in UEFA's list of priorities though. With hindsight (or maybe just common sense), changing the venues for the 84 and 85 finals would have been sensible.

@@DaveWallerLFC a lot of Liverpool fans were attacked after the game by knife wielding Roma fans apparently. It was on the news the next day. It definitely would have been a good decision to change the venue in 84 ( and 85 obviously ). I think UEFA wanted English clubs out of Europe any way possible because we were cleaning up every season virtually.

Venues for European Finals back then were selected around three years beforehand, so there was no way anyone could have known Roma would be taking part in the Champions' Cup in 1984, let alone get to the Final.
Even so, it was amazingly stupid of UEFA not to allocate a 'back-up' venue to be triggered should Roma have won the 1983 Scudetto - which of course they did.
The attacks on Liverpool fans before and after the match should have been foreseen, it was obvious they would happen, especially if Liverpool won.

@@DaveWallerLFC 40 Liverpool fans were hospitalised due to knife attacks and missile throwing by Roma fans. Some of the LFC fans were refused access to their hotel rooms due to owners worrying that the hotels themselves might become targets for further attacks, and so many had to seek refuge in the British Embassy.
The whole business gave a lot of Liverpool fans a very negative view of Italians, and the paranoia it created played a role in the Heysel Disaster a year later.

@@martinodoni8943 thanks for the info, it certainly seems stupid of UEFA not to have a backup venue in place. I’ve read your stuff on hillsborough and Heysel on the internet as well, very good points and good reading. 👍👍
