Liverpool 3-1 Everton, FA Cup Final 1986

  • A Merseyside derby in the Wembley sun. Liverpool had already clinched the league title ahead of Everton, and so were going for the Double. The Toffees, in their third successive FA Cup final appearance, were looking for revenge. Time for Dalglish v Kendall and Hansen v Lineker. Time too for Brian Moore and David Pleat.

Absolutely, he had a beautiful touch and his vision and passing ability was second to none. He was the orchestrator in midfield and most of the best play went through him. Don't expect him to run up and down the pitch or track back during the game because it wouldn't happen lol, but when you needed that creativity and vision from midfield then there was none better than big Jan, the Scouse Dane.

I'm not a Liverpool supporter but what I don't get about Liverpool's 3rd goal in this game is why it is not considered, hands-down, greatest ever FA cup goal scored, and also the greatest team goal ever scored - it's even better than Carlos Alberto's goal for Brazil's in the 1970 world cup final. It's just an insanely incredible goal that's unfathomably underrated and not mentioned as much as it deserves.

If you look at his celebration after scoring he’s repeating the words “I’ve done it” and when you hear everything he battled through to get to that point in his career you’ll understand why those words were so meaningful.

eles214 thanks for the comment man. You are right. I mean old Wembley being changed as it did, is like changing Buckingham Palace into a " Trump Towers " type of affair. I thought Wembley was a grade two listed building or something. So far the new Wembley has done no one any favors, least of all football fans who miss the atmosphere like here in this all Merseyside Derby F.A Cup final. I was twelve at the time and saw it on T.V. but I was there at Wembley for the 1989 all Merseyside F.A. Cup final and it lives in my memories for ever and ever, :-). YNWA!

See the amazing ball control by Ian Rush when he went through on goal for what should've been the hat trick. But to be honest Gary Stevens made one error that changed the whole dynamic. He had possession of the ball, there was no problem when the ball was given to him by Mountfield. He tried to play it down the line, he put it straight into Molby's path.

Obviously special being an all Merseyside final, but even more so because Liverpool and Everton were without doubt the best two teams in the country.
