  • Cutting corners is a common reason why many times roof replacements are less expensive.
In this video you'll see how one roofer realized the roof replacement install was missing a key component, gutter apron.
When a city does their inspection, the gutter apron missing is a huge red flag since it helps prevent water from entering the home aroung all the gutters. This results on a failed inspection and must be corrected.
After a roof replacement is completed, it's very expensive and time consuming to correct this error.
A roofer would need to detach all the gutters, remove the starter course and the shingles at the perimeter to properly install the gutter apron.
Instead a cheap roofer cut corners and ultimately cut the top of the apron so no shingles would be manipulated. When inspecting, you would see the gutter apron and it would be reasonable to assume the roofer installed it.
Clearly this roof hack got away with it which leads to rotted eaves from water and ice building up below the roof deck.
The roofer is no longer in business and the warranty is gone with him. This is why it's important to hire a reputable roofing contractor who will stand behind their work and put integrity over profit.

Water and ice membrane always goes down under the "gutter apron" or drip edging so if the gutter freezes and backs up under the edging it hits membrane not bare wood. Grace I and W calls for a 12" run laid under edging, and then your common 36" run over the edging but that a little gnarly if you ask me.

This makes total sense. I feel like it's the which came first, the chicken 🐔 or the egg 🥚 scenario. 😂. Other manufacturers require it over the gutter apron. Also, each city by me has different rules about it going either over or under the apron. I like the way you described best!

@@ChicagoRoofer On a copper roof I did once, we did both.... Ice and water under, then regular underlayment over.... no need for it lol. Under is plenty and I live in a state with super harsh winters!

Makes sense. But I love knowing it's overkill and it helps me sleep at night :-) 💤😴💤

To a lesser extent; they'll clip the apron over the gutter hangers.

That probably was harder and took longer cutting each peice then it would of taken to do it right

Yes but to install it correctly, they would have to remove the starter and first course of shingles. Although, that would be the ethical thing to do.

Couldn't have said it better myself. What's entertaining to me is how often homeowners say but your $1,000 more than someone else. But that someone else oftentimes has been in business less than a year but knows how to manipulate the system to make it look like they've been around longer. I'm thinking about making a video exposing how contractors haven't been in business as long as they appear to be

Everyone's got to start somewhere. I'm sure that there are many new companies that are better than others that have been around for 20 years or more. It's less about how long someone has been in business and more about the quality of craftsmanship.

I think they both can go hang in hand. Those that do quality craftsmanship last longer and for the right reasons, taking care of the customer

Not sure that this means. Looks like the word promo. Is it related to the video?
