The violent last minute dive is to keep out of ground small-arms fire as long as absolutely posssible until over the airfield boundary. Used when the airfield is besieged by enemy troops - as it was at Khe-Sanh. An aircraft on a 3 degree "conventional" approach is a sitting duck.
Too much airspeed after dive, resulting in a lot of float during flare for landing. A tricky maneuver, requiring highly experienced pilot to execute precisely. Once the mains are on the ground however, max reverse on those huge turbo-props with max braking quickly brings the "Herc" to an impressive stop. Any head wind is a bonus in reducing landing distance of course.
There is a part A to that landing sometimes. start at say 10,000 feet altitude bank almost 90 degrees left or tight and continue on in a tight spiral down to about where the 130 in this video comes out of it then the final approach as shown in this video. Our 130's going into Sarajevo had bullet holes in their fuselages (Hillary Clinton was correct about being shot at, but it wasnt while she was on the ground) and used that spiral descent to land there.
What kind of g's are the pulling when they pull up out of that dive? I'm just astounded that plane still has its wings. I suppose it's probably empty to be able to make that dive and then stop so quickly. Does anybody have more information?
don't know the G forces. wings are attached through heavy bolts straight to the fuselage at the wing root (splice panels) I would be more worried about the MLG chattering and hot brakes if I saw that and the 12 hr down time to fix it.
