    I was a C-130 Crew Chief stationed at Elemendorf AFB, Alaska, for several years. We didn't 'precondition' the engines as you describe (repeatedly). But we did have to keep other parts of the aircraft warm, and 'de-ice' the wings before flight.

    Inaugural flight in 2011? Yeah that's incorrect. Perhaps you mean the MC-130 "J" but the MC-130 has been flying since the 70's. How do I know....I've flown on many of them as CREW.

    i've wrenched on those myself. we've done some weird things with those planes: rescue versions, hurricane chasers, trash haulers, combat support - i really could go on. i wasn't propulsion (avionics for me), but i seem to remember we even had a version that could be started with shotgun cartridges so you don't need and apu to fire it up.

    Dates are interesting for how long the MC130 has been in service. Pretty sure that MC130's (regardless of A-J) have been in service sines the 80's at a minimum. Certainly with the 1st SOW at Hurlburt at the very least.

      Yeah, not sure where they got that “since 2011” information. They were at Clark AB when I was there in 1982!

      The real C130’s have flight engineers and navigators, the J’s still have teething problems..

    Ahh yes, the Lockheed Cyrano. Bulbous nose, irresistible girth, flying about the world in the service of the Sun King who gives not two fucks about him. Poor Roxane ..

    The C-130 entered service with the U.S. in 1956, followed by Australia and many other nations. During its years of service, the Hercules has participated in numerous military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations....

    You don't charge an APU like a battery and it doesn't require a V8 engine to charge it, it just proves the AI is clueless. The APU is a jet engine and is usually carried on board the aircraft to do things like run auxiliary loads like the electrics when there is a problem with the main engines or it provides bleed air to enable engine starts in midair.

    • @RTmadnesstoo
      @RTmadnesstoo Рік тому +1

      I guess you missed that external APU in the video powered by a gas engine that was powering the airplane systems and charging the batteries while preheating the engines.

    It’s odd that you are showing footage of both J and H models… the difference between a J and H as far as crew goes it that the H has 2 pilots, a navigator, flight engineer and two loads. Whereas the j had what you described.

    Good video. Your identity of the different C-130 are hit and miss. I saw a standard C-130, one MC-130 and a couple of EC-130's. The nose is the big difference for the MC-130 and the added antenna's at the rear designates and EC-130. I know this after spending time at DM where the EC-130's were stationed back in the 80's.

    It is being out performed by the Brazilian made C-390 both in terms of price, but also capabilities.

      Not really. And besides..it takes the cake in longevity, strength, reliability, and flexibility..and almost more importantly...appearance...the 390 is fugly imo.

    • @couttsw

      Just remember the C-390 is Brazilian made, not US made or European made nor does it have the longevity or the C-130, let's see if the C-390 is still around in 50 years time?
