    Might I add that thrust reversers on the C-17 are special in a one-of-a-kind way. It is fully reversible (including exhaust from the core versus typical bypass air reverse) and can be deployed in-flight for tactical (rapid) descents. Simply a fantastic piece of engineering.

  • @Tjita1
    @Tjita1 13 років тому +1

    Actually, many if not most jet aircraft can do that, it's called powerback. The reason why they don't is that the engine is more likely to suck in debris (FOD) swirled up by the reversers. Due to that you usually cut out the reversers around 60 knots.

" Choke on it.

    @furfeyl that would be funny if it could. I was a crew chief in the Air Force for 8 yrs and I also wondered the same thing when i first seen it. But luckily the system will not activate unless 2 conditions exist. 1. The jet has to have its landing gears down & locked. 2. The plane has to be on the ground. There is a switch in the wheel well that senses if these 2 conditions exist or not. If not it will not work. That way the dumb ass pilots won't jack up and crash our million plus dollar jet.

  • @rolmain88
    @rolmain88 13 років тому

    @furfeyl
    accidents? highly unlikely becoz of the design. im not sure bout other planes but boeing thrust reversers can only be operate when the thrust lever is at idle. this is lock mechanically. and also cannot be operated on air due to the air/ground sensors.
    im unaware of the rocket engines. but i have seen a youtube video where they use rockets on C-130 to accelerate the a/c. unless the rocket is fix to a position where is against the forward movement of the aircraft then mayb it can =D

    1st: It's not made to be pretty, and doesn't need to be pretty.
    2nd: Still more than enough, why do you need more?
    3rd: No, but the same thing that lets them go backwords lets them land in 3,500 feet, which IS important.
    4th: Effective range is for combat aircraft, the C-17 is a cargo aircraft. If you mean how far can if fly without refueling then it's around 2600 mi (nautical).
    For What Purpose? How about safely lifting troops out of a hostile place?

  • @sixstringfretter
    @sixstringfretter 13 років тому

    @ongesinaiya I understand the idea of reversing thrust, just how is it done? Normally you see "buckets" or "clamshells" covering the exhaust to redirect thrust. I dont see that here. The compressor blades are turning the same direction, so where does the reversing come from?

  • @ongesinaiya
    @ongesinaiya 13 років тому

    @sixstringfretter normally jet thrust force the plane forward, but the thrust reverser is reversing the flow of the jet .. just imagine your blowing air from your mouth while your moving forward... small amount is nothing but in massive size.... you make yourself stop

  • @furfeyl

    @feluke Clamshell reverse thrust was used in low-bypass turbofans.
    Modern engines with 5:1 bypass ratios or greater have more 'elegant' systems (thanks for pointing this out). Thrust from the core engine cannot be reversed by this method but this is irrelevant at ground speeds.
