@maggiereneemusic -- I have not read all the comments yet but if no one has said it yet you need to see the original Highlander movie. ALL the **songs** in that movie were written by Queen after reading the script. This song asks a seemingly simple question: If you were immortal and in love would you want to live forever if your soulmate was not immortal?
Here are the songs by Queen that were used in the movie:
"Princes of the Universe"
"Who Wants to Live Forever"
"A Kind of Magic"
"One Year of Love"
"Gimme the Prize (Kurgan's Theme)"
"Don't Lose Your Head"
The big question is do you do react videos on these songs before you watch the movie?
All of these tracks, with lyrics, were written and performed by Queen and were featured in various scenes in the movie. The film also had a score composed by Michael Kamen, which provided additional musical background and themes throughout the movie.
If you are curious to hear more Brian May vocals give '39 a listen. If you'd like to hear Roger sing do I'm in Love With My Car.
I would also echo my agreement to your need to watch Highlander. Aside from this one (which I want played at my wake) my favorite is The Kurgan's Theme
You should watch the Highlander movie - THIS song is about his relationship to Heather (there it delivers the strongest émotions) - it always reminds me to be happy in the moment - forever!!!
The only one of Queen who didn't really sing was John Deacon, bass guitarist.
The other 3 Freddie, Sir Brian Harold May, lead guitarist (as his full title now is, was given a knighthood) and Roger Taylor (drummer) all have their own solo projects and can sing.
Although Roger Taylor has quite a mellow voice.
P.S. Roger Taylor released a solo album in 2022 following the Pandemic.
A single that he released features Scottish singer KT Tunstall in the music video. Song is called We're all just trying to get by.
Just came over to see your reactions to this song. If you’re interested in hearing either solo work from Brian May or Queen songs with Brian May on lead vocals, check out a song Brian did called Too Much Love Will Kill You. For Queen songs he sang, check out the live version of the songs ‘39 and Love of My Life.
I just wish that Freddy could have seen how he and Queen shaped music and left an indelible mark on the history of this world. He will never be forgotten.
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
Freddy was once asked what he'd like to happen to his legacy, and his reply was typically Freddy
"I don't care what you do with it, just don't make me boring Darling"

@@TheGamePlaySociety I'm dyslexic and rely on voice typing so it is what it is. But the fact you were able to correct a mistake, tells me that you know what was trying to be communicated, that's a success for me.
He did.
Short but iconic song. "Highlander" is of my all-time favorite movies and the epic soundtrack featuring Queen is one of the reasons why.
I'm surprised she hasn't ever seen the movie, if only for the music. It's been out so long that they're now talking about a prequel starring Henry Cavill.
I associate it more with the Season 1 Finale/Darius than the movies. It is one of the few songs that nearly always moves me to tears, because of how great it is and how poignant that scene is in the TV show.
All time favorite movie. With Queen’s soundtrack it can be emotional.
The question “ who wants to live forever?” Is a statement. There should be a beginning and an end. What more can you do when you have done everything? What is left to accomplish?
I wasn’t that wild about the movies, but absolutely loved the series. And yeah, this song is part of the soundtrack for that as well. The combo of Queen’s music and the Highlander storyline was pure magic. And I’ve always thought this song was particularly poignant given that Freddie died far too young.
@@tadfradsham7451 Called a rhetorical question. She moronically inserted "I do." SMH
As already mentioned, this song was written for the film Highlander. It reflects the agony felt by the immortal Connor McCloud as he has to constantly watch loved ones leave and/or die. Maggie you said you wanted to live forever. Watch the movie, it could change your mind 🥺
Actually, he could have died anytime he wanted to. All he had to do is let someone take his head just as he had done to others over the centuries.
Okay, but also consider Freddy's state of mind singing this song when he knew he was hiv-positive and watching friends die all around him from the same disease. It has always sounded so poignant to me because of this fact.
You've got rock anthems and rock ballads and this I like to call a rock aria.
And, yes, the concentration of talent in Queen was simply staggering.
I was trying to decide if it's like an aria or more like a lament. The montage that goes with this in Highlander is so powerful showing the (literally) undying love that Connor has for 'my bonnie Heather'. Gets me every time I watch it.
I believe still to this day the only band where each of their members have written a top 10 hit for the band. Each of them is a great musician in their own right, together they were magic.
He's a legendary guitarist, he can sing.. and he's got a Ph D in astrophysics.
And a Knighthood too. So its Sir Dr Brian May, Guitar God!
But everyone that know Freddies voice knows that he sings the whole song. Brian May is brilliant, true, but he only does back up here. And of course his lovely guitarplaying.
He did not sing lead on this song..
Don't forget he also made his famous guitar with his Dad from an old fireplace mantle made of cherry wood. I forget what British coin he uses to play The Red Special with. One of the major guitar makers tried to recreate The Red Special and they couldn't get it just right. This group is magic. ❤❤❤
The Show Must Go On is another must listen to. It comes off the final album that came out the year Freddie passed away in 1991
Fantastic song. And video.
And Innuendo! Two phenomenal pieces of music!
Agreed, it was always a very good song but has gone on to become one of their most iconic up alongside Bohemian, Radio Gaga and Who wants to live forever.
I think it's songs that somehow we associate with Freddie.
Despite that song being such a showcase for Freddie (doubly so considering his health at the time)…. what always gets me choked up is the Red Special downright raging against what’s to come. Always felt like Brian poured his soul into that one. Same thing with Too Much Love Will Kill You.
I don't often love a band's final album, but Innuendo was great. Ride the Wild Wind was a fantastic song that doesn't get enough attention.
This song made the parts of the movie Highlander where Connor Macleod marries his love SOO much more impactful. He then has to watch her age and die in his arms, while he stays the same as he learns the price of immortality is to have to watch those you love die. It's brilliantly filmed too.
Written by Brian, this song took on a different feeling when Freddie got sick. This is such a beautiful performance of this song. The main character in the movie is immortal and has had to watch as everyone he loves ages and dies. He meets another woman and wonders if he should even allow himself to fall in love with her, knowing how it will all turn out. So that is what this song is about. Thank you for reacting to this beautiful song..
Queen was the best band EVER, and Freddie was a magical being.
I was blown away by how great Brian May sounded opening this song.
This song's theme was important to the movie. And it's perfect for that movie (yes it's a favorite). But it was later after Freddie died that I realized that he knew he had AIDS when recording it. That gives the song a very different and deeper meaning. You are literally listening to a dying man singing about life and mortality. Still shakes me.
I always thought the same of "Hammer to Fall".
Knowing he had terminal AIDS had to weigh on this performance.
-This song was recorded for The Highlander in 1986. (And appeared on the Queen album A Kind of Magic)
- *Freddie did not have a diagnosis of HIV/AIDS until 1987* !
So… Freddie did NOT *know* for certain that he had the virus… although he most likely *suspected*, considering how often he was tired and getting repeated throat infections ( + many of his friends and his former lovers were getting sick too).
@@robertgruen2088”Hammer to Fall” was from the 1984 Queen album The Works. Freddie wasn’t diagnosed until 1987.
@@imweakfordeaky well said
The lead guitarist who starts the song is Dr. Sir Brian May. He has a Ph.D. in astrophysics and was knighted in 2023.
In his spare time, Brian May is an astrophysicist. In the opening the way Brian is singing makes it sound more haunting and goes with the "Highlander" movie perfectly. With my deep Scottish roots, "Highlander" is one of my all-time favorite movies, especially how they show how it was in 16th century Scotland. I highly recommend it for you to watch. Queen also did the soundtrack to "Flash Gordon".
This song made Highlander watchable whereas Flash Gordon and the music score are both crazy good! 😉
Fun Fact : Brian May’s mother was Scottish.
@@redfog42 The Highlander villain is campy, but other than that it's still a cool film.
The original Highlander is so much better than Highlander II.
This song goes under the skin and gives me shiver down my spine!
It's a great album too
Greetings from Germany 🫶🏼
This Beautiful at the beginning is Sir Brian May, PhD. Mainly lead guitarist, but also composer of this song and arranger of the orchestra, as well an astrophysicist.
Queen’s discography is filled with wonderfully ‘weird’ and unique songs. ‘I’m going slightly mad’, ‘Seven seas of rhye’, ‘Killer queen’, ‘Bicycle race’ and so many more. My absolute favourite band of all time. R.I.P. Freddie.
Queen live at Live Aid (1985) is probably one of the best live performances in history. It's on UA-cam, about 25 minutes long. Songs include: Bohemian Rhapsody, Radio Gaga (the song from which Lady Gaga took her name), Ay Oh (not so much a song as a chant with the crowd), Hammer to Fall, Crazy little thing called love, We will rock you, We are the champions, and Is this the world we created. Anything by Queen is gold, but this performance is worth seeing.
I was blessed to see Freddie before he passed. One of the greatest concerts as well as one of the greatest singers for me. Love your reactions. Thank you ❤
True musicians and performers. There will never be another Freddie Mercury "RIP" and there will never be another Queen.
"Too Much Love Will Kill You" , composed and sung by Brian May..i suggest
queen broke all the rules for a rock band and rock has never been the same rip freddie
Every member of Queen could sing. Amazing song. I love Brian singing.
Freddie was one of a kind, the voice the lyrics everything was just brilliant. The whole band are incredible!
The world misses you Freddie 🥺 .
When you try yourself to sing Queen's songs, you become even more in awe of Mercury voice. Unbeatable
2:50 Brian and John - guitar
Roger - drummer
Freddie - rest 👍🏻
7:00 Bicycle race 😅❤️
❤ This song always sends me into tears just knowing the context and hearing Freddie's incredible voice, And to think Queen had just done Live Aid a year before this movie was released and had just found out he was diagnosed with HIV. So he was dying when he did that concert and the soundtrack to Highlander.
It's Brian Mays song. He wrote it
The show Highlander was about an immortal. The only way he could be killed was to remove his head. This song was fitting. And it answered the question perfectly.Would you want to live forever if the cost was you had to watch all those you love die over 1000s of years
Brian is astrophysicist so naturally he expanded the place into place-time
I broke a VHS tape of Highlander listening to that song as it played in the movie. Now, as I'm slowly losing my other half due to his Glioblastoma... It's hitting me even harder. We've been together since 97. We've known each other longer than we haven't. I'm as ready as I think I can be, but it's still going to wreck me.
I still love this song, and the group. We lost Freddie too soon.
❤
Just be careful what you wish for. “To live on as we have is to leave behind joy, and love, and companionship, because we know it to be transitory, of the moment. We know it will turn to ash. Only those whose lives are brief can imagine that love is eternal. You should embrace that remarkable illusion. It may be the greatest gift your race has ever received.”
― Lorien - Babylon 5, J. Michael Straczynski
You need to see Barcelona with Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe
The entire Album A kind of Magic by Queen was basically the Sound Track to the Highlander movie and its series
Best band ever. Freddie and band are magical, so good!!
I recommend you watch the movie Highlander. This song, if I'm recalling right, is played while showing Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) living the decades with his bonnie Heather, staying young as she ages and dies an old woman in his arms. The series of the same name, starting Adrian Paul as Connor's younger clan cousin Duncan MacLeod was pretty great too, delving deeper into the lives of immortals.
The undersold champion of this piece is the orchestration composed by Michael Kamen as part of the Highlander soundtrack score.
Wooooooo an absolute epic song amazing the synth open all to the way to the bombastic build with the tail of line
Stunning! Love Queen and this one is extra special. Great job Maggie!
Thank you so much!
Freddie's voice is touched by angels just insane vocals no body can do it like him his performance makes me feel chills all over only freddie can do it just amasterpiece thanks ❤
"We're in the Highlands, where else? Running down a mountainside. The sun is shining. It's not cold. You've got your sheepskins on, and the boots I made for you. Good night, my bonny Heather."
Essa música é linda demais, me arrepio toda vez, principalmente com ela ao vivo, não tem jeito 👑❤️
Iconic song of the movie Highlander where Connor out lives his first love Heather and she takes her last breath in his arms and each year he visits where he buried her.Bawl my eyes every time I watch the movie
There's a whole bunch of Queen Videos that have Adam Lambert as the front man. He does Freddie justice cause he doesn't try to sing them like he did. He sings them his own way.
This song makes more sense when you've seen the movie (Highlander).
The live version in Budapest of this song is a bold beauty. Also from The Highlander, ONE YEAR OF LOVE is Freddie full throttle on vocals, in a kind of R&B vibe (Queen Official Lyric Video, never done live) - just Freddie and John.
🇨🇦 YEAH, been waiting for you to react to this, Forever !
Maggie you made me addicted to this reaction!❤❤❤
So many reactors watch the same video for this song, and that is a shame. Because they don't get to hear the last line of the song. "Who waits forever anyway?" Or hear the wonderfulness of the end of the song, which goes on for over 30 or 40 more seconds.
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU!
THANK YOU! For such an awesome Queen/Freddie reaction!
They all have good voices and play multiple instruments, that is why they are so talented and the best rock band in history.
Sigh, this one always makes me cry - it came out on the radio just as my mom came home for Hospice care for terminal emphysema. Still miss you, Mom!
100 more years to see an artist like him again
One of my favorite ones of Queen. Wish the song was a bit longer. My favorite vocal performance of Mercury is The Show Must Go On especially considering his physical condition at the time of recording. Brian May tells a wonderful behind the scenes story about the song ❤🔥🙂
8:36 "it's too short again" - it's the cut radio/video version, with the song fading out much earlier. The album version is longer.
Queen is quite the incredible band.and3 of them have beautiful voices
Highlander is a diamond, first because of the story and the actors, second because of the soundtrack made by Queen and the only recording of Freddie singing "New York, New York"!
RIP Freddie gone too soon for us, you need to listen to Queen's These are the days of our lives
These are the days of our lives. Freddie’s final days and probably my favorite song although I love them all
Its lacks the final line "who waits for ever anyway" as the sign off.
I loved this song so much it inspired me to choreograph a performance for fellow students studying performing arts. It was my first attempt at choreography by myself and I’m so proud of what I created. The music is so emotional. It’s still my favourite piece I’ve ever created. It’s amazing what great music can inspire you to do.
If you seen the movie you would get the the context he is a guy that can't die unless his head is cut off so he will for many centuries and the song relieves to he has to watch so many around him live and die of old age while he still carries on
You shout also see his duet "Barcelona" with a real opera singer (Monsterrat Caballe). It is mindblowing.
This is one of my absolute favourite Queen songs. It's from Highlander, but I have it on CD (Best of Queen Vol. 2). I listen to it every time I am feeling down. Absolutely beautiful song, and it really touches you in the feels. It also reminds us that we all have limited time to live, love and be us.
Knowing what the future holds for Mr Mercury makes the poignancy factor of this already heart rending song almost too much to handle.
This is my favorite version cuz we get Brian singing. The last chorus of Mother Love was done by Brian as Freddie was too weak and sick to finish it. He died 2 weeks later. Brian is wonderful. Roger has a fantastic voice too. Check out the song Barcelona, you’ll love it
First. The end line is "who wants forever anyway "
Cover by the four tenors, you'll love it
I just found your channel and am enjoying your reactions! I love your passion for music, and learning about the various techniques singers use when performing. Now, here's a little Julliard trivia which should be easy for most folks. I'll post it Jeopardy style: This "super" actor and this zany comedian known for his improvisational style were roommates at Julliard in the 1970s.
The sensation you feel is the Quickening
Freddie has such an incredibly powerful voice.
Was not always a fan of queen, but I'm a big fan of the Highlander movie and tv show and I grew to have a great appreciation for their music and they are now one of my favorite bands. Probably my favorite performance is when they did Live Aid, it was just amazing
John Deacon playing a double bass is based on a joke Brian May made during the recording sessions for the song "39". May jokingly said Deacon should play double bass on it, so a few days later Deacon came back with a double bass and having spend day and night learning to play it.
In my top three Queen songs of all times. So beautiful. And sad. Have you seen the movie, Highlander? If not, you should.
Please react to I`m going slightly mad.
One of my favorite songs!! This is one of those songs that the movie truly captures.
THIS is Macleod's 'lament'. He, being an immortal among we mortals, will always stay the age he 'turned', while the women he has loved all go to their mortality, with his "leaving no legacy" to follow him. This is the pain of immortality, always losing his beloved to when their time ceases, and he must truly move, and make another life to live, in ambiguity.
From the great movie Highlander. They also did the music for the movie Flash Gordon (he saved every one of us). (Dr. Brian May is also an astrophysicist)
This song always makes me cry, and here I am crying 😢 missing Freddie so much ❤
This is possibly the greatest love song ever written.
just proves once again that he was one of the greatest showmen ever, with the ability to mix up different styles
Queen night! What a night that was! This was after the obvious 'greatest hits', when Thomas dug deeper into the Queen oeuvre and came up with gems like this. Loved the video. Loved the reaction. 🙂
It faded out before the beautiful ending..."who waits forever anyway?"
This song was recorded about the time Freddie was diagnosed HIV positive. Much of the bands music in the next few years dealt with mortality and Freddie's declining health
YES! please SEE the Who Wants to Live Forever: Budapest, stage video, 1986 it is the best version of Freddie and the song. heart wrenching. keep in mind that in 1986 he was already becoming ill, and by April 1987 just months later, he got his death sentence diagnosis, yet created this beauty for as long as he could. ALSO SEE please Freddie singing with Spanish OPERA diva Montserrat Caballe: 1988: "HOW CAN I GO ON."
I love this video and reaction! Newcomer here. The great thing about Queen was that the song sounds just as good live as on the album. Don't dismiss the official videos, but they were fantastic! If you haven't watched the "One Vision" Official Video yet, that's a great choice. Again b-e-a-tiful person, the Live At Wembley version is terrific too.
my melancholy blues.. i love that song
Brian May has a PHD in astrophysics from Kings College in London. This song means even more when you understand the movie Highlander.
Somebody to love live by queen.
Legends epic Queen love your reaction Maggie
You should react to The Show Must Go On. Freddie was dying, and recorded it in one take after downing a 5th of Vodka, saying “I’ll f**king do it, Darling”. The man truly is a legenf!
Synergy: Queen made the theme song - and Highlander is the coolest TV show ever!
(Also - "There can be only one")
People forget Brian, Roger, and John had great voices.
The beginning is Sung by Brian May the guitar player
If you really want to understand this music, you need to watch the movie Highlander (1986). Brian May was inspired to write "Who Wants to Live Forever" after watching the love scenes between Connor and his wife Heather, and the song ultimately accompanied the film.
My absolute favourite of this is the1986 live performance at Wembley (Friday night or Saturday - both good although different) . Others love Budapest but any of those will make you gasp at the sheer intensity of Freddie live . And of course the amazing Brian, Roger and John
👑❤️👑❤️👑
I'm seeing Queen + Adam Lambert in less than a month! I'm so excited.
I don't know if anyone has said this but it was one of his last performances
Also known as the "Duncan has a sad" song. this was part of the Highlander the series soundtrack album, A kind of Magic
hehe an also fun fact: Brian can sing!
I still can't listen to this song without watering up.
You must hearing Brian May - Too Much Love Will Kill You...
Almost every Queen song title sounds like an epitaph for Freddie.
