This is probably because of the mindset instilled to me by Lynx, the number 1 tank parser on fflogs for nearly 6 months about 6 months ago.
Great video on something I rarely see covered. I do stuff with my squadron a lot. Some quick "endgame" notes: - Command missions are useful for Wondrous Tails. It's an easy way to get any of the level 1-60 dungeon tasks done. This includes just having them queued to be turned in as you suffer though shuffling Second Chance points at 7/9 seals. - Squadron Rationing Manual is arguably the best 2-hour buff scroll from the level 40/50 squadron missions. +15 mins to high-end food can be really nice. - 4 different DPS, MRD, GLD, and two CNJ is the most balanced squadron you can have. All of them being different races is nice if possible. This generally makes mission affinities easier to benefit from. - Chemistry farming is hard, but if you ever get one like what I got ("when not with the same class, party chemistry trigger rates +30%"), keep it forever and try to always deploy this person. If you can get physical ability+ on a tank, mental ability+ on a healer, and tactical/mental ability+ on two physical/magical DPS, that's your main crew. It is not entirely clear what benefit they have in CMs if any, but they aren't grayed out like some other chemistries are. - Offensive rank 5 (damage +60%) is the best battle tactic. Balanced (HP +30%, damage +30%) is what I use on my tank though. It says the battle tactic will also affect the AI's behavior, but I am not sure how.
I'd add that it can also be a viable option of farming Allagan Tomestone of Poetics along with leveling an alt job from 50 to 60 because "The Wanderer's Palace (Hard)" gives 100 for every complition and it can be unlocked for squadron missions. The bosses can be tricky at first if you don't know how to approach them with the party of NPCs, but once you do it's pretty consistent. Usually takes me about 25-28 minutes on machinist.

They're definitely worth it IMHO, especially if you ever go to level every job to 60+, especially as a dps, without having a que time? To be honest, as long as you just unlocked command missions, that makes squads 1000% worth it.

My squad members are all like mid 30s but i had no idea the training board stats were separate from the individual members stats. Squadron stuff is really nice. The time invested in is worth just to get additional mgp/scrips. Also for people who still has below or at lv50 jobs, the captain weapons are ilv130 which are basically an alternative of augmented ironworks if you do not want to spend tomes (but as video stated, it can take a while to get max rank)

If anyone is like me and they spent their time focusing almost entirely on the main story quest, you will have to unlock the Challenge Log before you can start working with your squad. You can do this by picking up a blue quest in the adventurers guild in Limsa Lominsa. This may be silly but I really struggled to figure out how to get this ball rolling, as I started in Gridania and missed this quest. I hope this helps someone!
@@WeskAlber I guess that’s my bad for condensing myself a bit too much. Once I left Gridania, I didn’t pick up any sidequests, as I was and still am a new player, and at the time was only interested in the main story. There have been a handful of instances playing FFXIV so far where I will encounter a roadblock, having missed talking to someone at some point. Half the time the game will tell you that you need to go back and do something else to proceed, sometimes they do not. Since a lot of tutorials did not include this information regarding the challenge log, I was hoping maybe this would help other people who were only focused on the story when they began, and decided to branch out when they found themselves enjoying the game.

i really like that when it comes to the stat boosts, you can't go too far wrong, since any "mistake" is easily corrected by redoing stats. lots of little things like this where you can't mess things up irrevocably, even if you try. i should have min-maxed.... but i did just fine brute forcing it

I joined ff14 because I heard you could play it and get all the content solo with the new duty support system. Came to realize that wasn't entirely true, but figured out the squadron can play a big role, but I didn't know how to use them. This video has been by a fair margin the most helpful and complete video I've watched so far. Thank you.
Squads are not duty support. They're more the like Alpha of DS. They intend to add trials to it so you can do the entire MAIN STORY solo. Side content will always be players unless they do a Dragon Quest X sorta thing. Hope this cleared up that confusion. And glad to have helped
It appears quite a lot of the most Unique Squadron members comes from Gold Saucer Challenge Logs. They are also unique in name, clothing sets and costume.
I’m placing this here as it wasn’t covered on video, but I learned it reading someone’s FF14 personal blog. There are about 10-12 very unique Squadron Members that are mostly available from Gold Saucer Challenge Logs. They have very unique names, unique special outfits. One even wears a GC Outfit!

A extremely well covered video of Squadrons. Hopefully the system does not fall by the wayside despite the AI shortcomings and the Trust System being in game. Who knows what lay yet in the future. Maybe an AI revamp with max level. I hit CAPTAIN tonight as a Tank.
To add on a bit. In the debrief of a Command Mission, along with the squadron XP and other rewards, you can get a High-Grade Company Issue Tonic. This can be used like a phoenix down on fallen squad members regardless of your job and they stack like any other potion. Just a side option beyond kill yourself and start back over. Also, while the squad AI doesn't do mechanics, a lot of the time they are also not affected/targeted by them. You are though... so guess who will /always/ get some practice with dealing with boss mechanics? :P Case in point, Brayflox Longstop's fight with Aiatar, the dragon will always target you for the poison pool attack.
I recently got my character to Flame Captain and boy do I feel proud! I know it's not a big deal but it makes me happy. It's great optional content and fun for head cannon stuff. And my god what have you done to your squad! it's a regular Pig-sty xD P.S. For coin and country flame salute!
I didn't know that you can get scripts from them I thought it's just another way of leveling up your side jobs, so I gave up on squadrons. I can't manage to get my FC to put spirit bound on but with squadrons I can get spirit bound scripts off them. Now it's worth coming back to it
I came to this video because I was having issues completing ANY rank 2 missions, I just couldn't meet the stats....but seeing you DON'T have to remain in the holy trinity 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 dps is a GAME changer.
really good way level jobs under 50 some tips -you can do multiple pull as long you pull towards your squadron since the AI have trouble moving and attacking as they pause before any action (ie if playing a DPS have the squad engage a mob then you go next set mobs then aggro them your tank) just be sure you have the squadron attack each new mob to let tank have the aggro while you watch them melt them lol -playing as tank its really a good way to learn manage your cooldowns like using arms lengths more

Great guide, even after Endwalker dropped. I have one question though. Training board missions. When selecting str, mind or tactics or a combination thereof. We are capped at the 280. If you keep repeating those trainings. How does that help you move the stats around to meet mission reqs? Wouldn't that just leave you severely short in one ability? Even then how do you use the training to hit mission reqs of 400+? My squad is 40+ now and often find myself meeting only one of the three mission stats? L40 said and they struggle clearing L25 missions.
You need a proper balanced team too. If you say, pump all your training into Strength, you want a team of mages and DEX classes like Archer. This is essentially what I have on my main. Mostly STR so I use more of the other classes. 25 missions should be nothing at 40. The 40 Flagged mission is really tough though and needs a lot of extra leveling, chemistry, or perfect party comp. The Personal FC buff missions are always basically a "you will only ever meet 2/3 requirements" without some very big chemistry bonuses. Which, not worth it imo for a Weekly

I do have ONE question, however: "If you use Training Regimes and you make a stat hit 0 in order to boost the others, can you still boost those 2 stats while the other sits at base-0?"
Just commenting on this because samurai was the one class I never unlocked when playing this game for the last 10 years. I decided to give my squadron a try on 7/12/24. My logs are showing my squadron tank is pretty much doubling duty support estiniens' dps.
Hitting the last stat caps for the final Rank up unlock bein able to run Dungeons, was just a nightmare. I had what i thought was a great stat spread, but those rank up missions, are just brutal. Lol. Had to min/max my bonuses for dayysssss before i got a combo that worked, lol.
It's annoying you have to juggle the attributes until you find a group that hits the requirement. Would be a lot easier if there was just an auto filter that gives you the group that hits the requirement.
Is there a limit for doing the command missions like once a day or once a week?? or can you do command missions with your squadrons infinitely for your other dps jobs??

Build up your Squad, people! It’s a great part of the game that I wish they continued to build upon. Trust took over for Shadowbringers and likely will continue to do so onwards. If they made Squadrons like Final Fantasy Tactics where you could purchase new members, name them, and then basically Fantasia them and make them look how you want them to look. And of course continue to make them work in leveling dungeons all the way up to current max level.
Now I am confused. I was wondering when you can start to but Aetherite Tickets from the GC, and I seem to recall you need to be captain. Surely by then you would have enough Gil to make these redundant because you have more than enough Gil? I'm almost out of tickets and I was hoping to buy some more.
You will be AMAZED at how few max level players are NOT GC Captains in this MMO... a lot of people hate this part of the game, because the NPC GC guys on your team, suck and you have to really control them constantly or you wipe. (now if it was more like the TRUST system, far more people will be playing GC squads) Next time your in Crystarium, just inspect some level 80 people and see how many are NOT captains, if you don't believe me. =)
I will hit Captain tonight on mission complete as a 67 Sprout 🌱. But I totally agree with you. And in all the players I’ve examined for gear, NONE has ever been a Captain. I feel a little bit better already. But the system needs Dev attention.
@@ardentdfender4116 Congrats on becoming a Captain, it takes a great effort to get there, but your will be joining the few who can actually claim this title. It just amazes me, these people have level 530 gear on and full relic weapons and are 2nd Lieutenants of their GC. lol
The squads/npcs only suck if you are trying to do hard mode dungeons for command missions. Just stick to normal mode dungeons and the squad will do fine. The AI just does not handle hard mode mechanics well. And more than likely that will never change..Square Enix basically abandoned GC future plans. There have been 8 ranks above Capt since the beginning..but they are just dead placeholders that will never be used. They came out with Trust system to replace squads in higher level content..so no good reason for them to put new effort into squad system.
Idk, I did 10 command missions, wanted the emotes, and they weren't THAT annoying. Only a couple of the hard dungeons were frustrating, but took one or two tries to complete. It's just time consuming but I did it in like 2-3 days
Does anyone know if xp from defeating enemies in dungeons Command Missions bears on the squad? In other words, will squad members level as quickly from rushing through a Command Mission as they would if you clear the entire dungeon?
I have done the quest, "Shadows Uncast" and I am 2nd Lieutenant. I don't see the barrack and I don't get another quest from any NPC in the GC (Twin Adder) Have I missed something? EDIT: There was a quest in Limsa Lominsa that I missed. I figured it was something I missed. Great video btw. 👍

I just sent my squadron on the level 50 flagged mission. The 2nd and 3rd categories were both covered, but the 1st caterogy was short by 1 point (369/370). I'll let you know if it works tomorrow. :)

I do appreciate the squadrons, my experience with other players has not been the best since I've started. A lot of them are either passive-aggressive or just trolls in dungeons.
@@WeskAlber Well as a sprout and healer I got blamed for this one dark knight killing himself and he asked if I ever healed before, then proceeded to thank a red mage for healing him the whole game even though it was obviously not them. It's just little things like that, nothing to be done just kinda deters me from wanting to play with other people for now lol.

you can spam command missions back to back if you have the company seals to spend, and often its a guaranteed level up for the squad every time you do one.
Is it really "optional" if your ranks in Grand Company are locked behind squadron progress? I'm watching this video because I made zero meaningful progress in like 2 weeks.
@@WeskAlber irrelevant for story maybe, but if you ever want to progress beyond Second Lieutanant of any Grand Company, you need to do Squadrons. And thanks to it being more or less a daily activity (unless you like running Command missions over and over), it takes ages to get to the point where you'll finally allowed to rank up in Grand Company.
My level 40 characters can't even succeed in level 20 missions. Do I need to keep getting better squad members and cut loose the level 40 ones. My squad comp is always 100 pts shy of either mind, physical or the other. Clearly I'm not understanding how to level up my characters because Successful lower missions don't help and neither does training
You're supposed to make a balance of difference classes. Also, make sure you did Training. If your Squad is failing level 20 missions, then you missed something like Training.
@@WeskAlber I don't think I understood training until watching your vid a 2nd time. I thought Training just moved your current stats, I didn't know it added to the stats and there's a cap. I believe this is my problem. I need more training. Also patience for the Commander part
They need to just toss out the squadrons as a idea for optional leveling for new players. Rework the system so they're more like solo version of guildhests. Not so much of re entering old content but rather doing a remix of old content much like guildhests. Base them around the grand company storyline missions also. I believe its harder for them to add in working AI npc's that react to older content correctly, they should make the content based around the AI npcs rather then the other way around.

note that in 6.0 getting all the way to captain now means you can buy HW and SB mounts and minions for 20k seals each.

Also, while the squad AI doesn't do mechanics, a lot of the time they are also not affected/targeted by them. You are though... so guess who will /always/ get some practice with dealing with boss mechanics? :P Case in point, Brayflox Longstop's fight with Aiatar, the dragon will always target you for the poison pool attack.
I recently got my character to Flame Captain and boy do I feel proud! I know it's not a big deal but it makes me happy. It's great optional content and fun for head cannon stuff. And my god what have you done to your squad! it's a regular Pig-sty xD

I think it’s a bit cool when you examine a player and you see “Captain” you can smile a little vs lieutenant.
I didn't know that you can get scripts from them I thought it's just another way of leveling up your side jobs, so I gave up on squadrons. I can't manage to get my FC to put spirit bound on but with squadrons I can get spirit bound scripts off them. Now it's worth coming back to it

I came to this video because I was having issues completing ANY rank 2 missions, I just couldn't meet the stats....but seeing you DON'T have to remain in the holy trinity 1 tank, 1 healer, 2 dps is a GAME changer.
Of note(and assuming i recall correctly): if you change GC, not only does the squadron follow you, so does your prerequisites for Captain.

some tips
-you can do multiple pull as long you pull towards your squadron since the AI have trouble moving and attacking as they pause before any action (ie if playing a DPS have the squad engage a mob then you go next set mobs then aggro them your tank) just be sure you have the squadron attack each new mob to let tank have the aggro while you watch them melt them lol
-playing as tank its really a good way to learn manage your cooldowns like using arms lengths more

You can make your squadron group ridiculously durable. By level 40 assuming you're playing one of the dps roles, your group can tank two pulls easily.
Great guide, even after Endwalker dropped. I have one question though. Training board missions. When selecting str, mind or tactics or a combination thereof. We are capped at the 280. If you keep repeating those trainings. How does that help you move the stats around to meet mission reqs? Wouldn't that just leave you severely short in one ability? Even then how do you use the training to hit mission reqs of 400+? My squad is 40+ now and often find myself meeting only one of the three mission stats? L40 said and they struggle clearing L25 missions.
You need a proper balanced team too. If you say, pump all your training into Strength, you want a team of mages and DEX classes like Archer. This is essentially what I have on my main. Mostly STR so I use more of the other classes.
25 missions should be nothing at 40. The 40 Flagged mission is really tough though and needs a lot of extra leveling, chemistry, or perfect party comp. The Personal FC buff missions are always basically a "you will only ever meet 2/3 requirements" without some very big chemistry bonuses. Which, not worth it imo for a Weekly

Just commenting on this because samurai was the one class I never unlocked when playing this game for the last 10 years. I decided to give my squadron a try on 7/12/24. My logs are showing my squadron tank is pretty much doubling duty support estiniens' dps.

I finally did my five dungeons and never got so frustrated with them.
Hitting the last stat caps for the final Rank up unlock bein able to run Dungeons, was just a nightmare. I had what i thought was a great stat spread, but those rank up missions, are just brutal. Lol. Had to min/max my bonuses for dayysssss before i got a combo that worked, lol.
Well, this was WAY more than I bargained for...
Do uniquely glamed recruits lose their original glamour if you make them swap classes?
I am pretty sure if you dispel they're back to the original but I have never tried that!
It's annoying you have to juggle the attributes until you find a group that hits the requirement. Would be a lot easier if there was just an auto filter that gives you the group that hits the requirement.
Is there a limit for doing the command missions like once a day or once a week??
or can you do command missions with your squadrons infinitely for your other dps jobs??

Build up your Squad, people! It’s a great part of the game that I wish they continued to build upon.
Trust took over for Shadowbringers and likely will continue to do so onwards. If they made Squadrons like Final Fantasy Tactics where you could purchase new members, name them, and then basically Fantasia them and make them look how you want them to look. And of course continue to make them work in leveling dungeons all the way up to current max level.

Now I am confused. I was wondering when you can start to but Aetherite Tickets from the GC, and I seem to recall you need to be captain. Surely by then you would have enough Gil to make these redundant because you have more than enough Gil? I'm almost out of tickets and I was hoping to buy some more.

You will be AMAZED at how few max level players are NOT GC Captains in this MMO... a lot of people hate this part of the game, because the NPC GC guys on your team, suck and you have to really control them constantly or you wipe. (now if it was more like the TRUST system, far more people will be playing GC squads) Next time your in Crystarium, just inspect some level 80 people and see how many are NOT captains, if you don't believe me. =)
I will hit Captain tonight on mission complete as a 67 Sprout 🌱. But I totally agree with you. And in all the players I’ve examined for gear, NONE has ever been a Captain. I feel a little bit better already. But the system needs Dev attention.
@@ardentdfender4116 Congrats on becoming a Captain, it takes a great effort to get there, but your will be joining the few who can actually claim this title. It just amazes me, these people have level 530 gear on and full relic weapons and are 2nd Lieutenants of their GC. lol
The squads/npcs only suck if you are trying to do hard mode dungeons for command missions. Just stick to normal mode dungeons and the squad will do fine. The AI just does not handle hard mode mechanics well. And more than likely that will never change..Square Enix basically abandoned GC future plans. There have been 8 ranks above Capt since the beginning..but they are just dead placeholders that will never be used. They came out with Trust system to replace squads in higher level content..so no good reason for them to put new effort into squad system.
Idk, I did 10 command missions, wanted the emotes, and they weren't THAT annoying. Only a couple of the hard dungeons were frustrating, but took one or two tries to complete. It's just time consuming but I did it in like 2-3 days
Does anyone know if xp from defeating enemies in dungeons Command Missions bears on the squad? In other words, will squad members level as quickly from rushing through a Command Mission as they would if you clear the entire dungeon?
They only get exp from completion

I have done the quest, "Shadows Uncast" and I am 2nd Lieutenant. I don't see the barrack and I don't get another quest from any NPC in the GC (Twin Adder) Have I missed something? EDIT: There was a quest in Limsa Lominsa that I missed. I figured it was something I missed. Great video btw. 👍

I just sent my squadron on the level 50 flagged mission. The 2nd and 3rd categories were both covered, but the 1st caterogy was short by 1 point (369/370). I'll let you know if it works tomorrow. :)
...failed... but got a level up that gave me the 1 point I was missing so I'll finally beat it on the next deployment.

I do appreciate the squadrons, my experience with other players has not been the best since I've started. A lot of them are either passive-aggressive or just trolls in dungeons.
I can't defend them but was there anything in specific they did? If it was things their said, tone is usually self ascribed.
@@WeskAlber Well as a sprout and healer I got blamed for this one dark knight killing himself and he asked if I ever healed before, then proceeded to thank a red mage for healing him the whole game even though it was obviously not them. It's just little things like that, nothing to be done just kinda deters me from wanting to play with other people for now lol.

you can spam command missions back to back if you have the company seals to spend, and often its a guaranteed level up for the squad every time you do one.

I'm not sure what you are referring to? It's optional in the sense that it's unrelated to story progress
@@WeskAlber irrelevant for story maybe, but if you ever want to progress beyond Second Lieutanant of any Grand Company, you need to do Squadrons. And thanks to it being more or less a daily activity (unless you like running Command missions over and over), it takes ages to get to the point where you'll finally allowed to rank up in Grand Company.

My level 40 characters can't even succeed in level 20 missions. Do I need to keep getting better squad members and cut loose the level 40 ones. My squad comp is always 100 pts shy of either mind, physical or the other. Clearly I'm not understanding how to level up my characters because Successful lower missions don't help and neither does training
You're supposed to make a balance of difference classes. Also, make sure you did Training. If your Squad is failing level 20 missions, then you missed something like Training.
@@WeskAlber I don't think I understood training until watching your vid a 2nd time. I thought Training just moved your current stats, I didn't know it added to the stats and there's a cap. I believe this is my problem. I need more training. Also patience for the Commander part

They need to just toss out the squadrons as a idea for optional leveling for new players. Rework the system so they're more like solo version of guildhests. Not so much of re entering old content but rather doing a remix of old content much like guildhests. Base them around the grand company storyline missions also. I believe its harder for them to add in working AI npc's that react to older content correctly, they should make the content based around the AI npcs rather then the other way around.
