- It sounds strange but, just go with me for a second: the key to understanding the Huawei P40 Pro+ … is looking back at a Nokia phone from seven years ago.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 was a revolutionary re-imagining of what a cameraphone could be. In a time when most phone cameras topped out at 12 or 16 megapixels, it brought a monster 41-megapixel sensor that let you crop zoom without the quality loss of those smaller cameras … and it mounted the whole thing on a bed of ball bearings for optical stabilization. In 2013 this was incredible stuff, especially for the (in retrospect, reasonable) price of $649. So why didn’t Nokia run away with the market? Well mainly because it ran a platform called Windows Phone. A platform that failed largely because it just didn’t have the apps people were looking for.
Over the past few years, Huawei has kind of stepped into Nokia’s old spot in the smartphone photography space, by recruiting some of the imaging pioneers from Nokia … by partnering with famed photography brand Leica … and by applying good old-fashioned R&D to produce some stunning phone cameras. The Huawei P40 Pro Plus is the latest evolution of that legacy - so I took it on a road trip from Brooklyn to the boonies … and along the way, this collection of cameras captured my heart. But unless you’re a phone-tweaking geek like me, you’ll probably find that no optical achievement is worth the compromises this phone carries. Still using both my Lumia 830 and my Lumia 950 as my daily driver to this day. Ngl, I'm still amazed with Live Tiles. I can't even find any Android launcher that can mimic Live Tiles brilliantly.

@@FAT8893 not just live tiles, the user interface was nothing we have seen till date. Metro UI was something out of a sci-fi movie. Brilliantly designed phone and UI. Sailfish OS was another masterful concept but failed to make a user base.
It was a clone of the original Nokia N9. What a beautiful device it was to this day.

miss my yellow 920, such a stunning brick of a phone. The sale of Nokia to microsfot and the move to windows phone 10 signaled the death of the lumia series.
I loved my orange Lumia 625! And my sister had a Lumia 730 as well! I was hoping that the software and app store would improve, but sadly I had to jump ship within 2 yrs of buying it
I used my 525 till July 2019, I still have mine. I ain’t giving it up.

I'm from Chile and I made the "sacrifice" of buying a p40 pro (not the plus).
I don't regret anything. The only thing that I must say I miss is Google Photos, but I was able to adapt using Microsoft apps and apkpure to get like 85% of the apps I used to have on my old P30.
Not gonna lie, it would be great if google could work with Huawei again but I'm not counting on that, even if the ban is lifted.
The lesson I have learned of this whole situation is how messed up are we being so dependant on one single company.

I got nothing to hide, my country's government and USA are spying on me anyway so why bother if another country starts to do so as well? As I said, I got nothing to hide (well except for my sex life, but I don't think they care about that part). I'm not a drug dealer or some shit that would make me an interest for them so I'm just one of the billions that have a phone and is spied on for no actual reason.

The Nokia Lumia was amazing when it was released it had a revolutionary camera I remember having it and friends being jealous over the camera!!
And it is still a great camera today. Even today's 2020 flagship still find it difficult to recreate the Lumia 1020 photo quality.

@@madil2259 Pretty big sensor used to be a real novelty in the days of the 808 PureView and the Lumia 1020, and now most camera sensors of today are catching up or already catched up with them. What is different is pixel binning technique - the Nokia relies on oversampling whereas camera sensor of today relies on Quad (or Nona) Bayer and they are as different as chalk and cheese.
Hey friends. Couple things:
1) The Lumia 1020 came out seven years ago, not nine. I cannot math when I'm rushing a script.

3) There's another alternative to relying on the Huawei App Gallery: web apps. It's not my preferred solution and it doesn't change my stance on the device, but David Imel of Android Authority makes that point in his review and he's right - it's an option.

3b) You can install the Google Services Framework and Play Store yourself, similar to what people have already done with the Huawei P40 Pro and previous Huawei phones. Then it'll function like any other stateside Android device. Not recommended for average users, but something adept techies can do. Same security warnings about sideloading apps apply here (but let's be honest, if you're worried about security, why are you using a Huawei phone in the first place?)

I miss Windows Phone so much. Specially the wordflow keyboard. Really loved the 1020 and that yellow is just perfect.
And they had the balls to make thick phones. Imagine today's power management tech with a 10mm thick battery.
Totally agree. Recently watched a video by Jon Rettinger on why Windows Phone failed & if made me miss my old yellow Lumia so much. Loved everything about that phone apart from the app availability.
Lumia 1500 was my favorite.
I had a 920, took until the OnePlus 3 to get the same quality of photos

better is an understatement..samsung are terribly boring this year with colors and if anything last year's colors they just trying to copy huawei..I'm really not excited with this year's flagship division from samsung unless the note changes my mind, samsung has gotten good in charging people high prices for less, $1400 for a phone with focus issues, terrible colors, gimmicky camera if you ask me, discrepancy between exynos and snapdragon etc..unacceptable

I honestly believe other UA-camrs point. The power Google has over this devices is way too much to the extent you won't want to buy a particular product because of one name "google" there should be a competition where customers has choice to go either with this or the other. YoungWise2011 is good that they have their own manual controls. But there’s some things you can’t easily replicate with manual controls. Especially video stabilisation etc

You should check out Juan Bagnell from SomeGadgetGuy. He made a thorough review of the V60.
Ofc you should try a phone and see it yourself but in my opinion you should avoid LG phones even if they are cheaper as their software is horrible. However this is just my opinion and you should see what you like.

@@FAT8893 Oh, the phone with the best quality sound currently? Also a pretty great camera setup, super fast charging and a pretty fast wireless charging as well? And for the record it's 900€ but considering it's cameras are on par with Samsung's except the Zoom which is slightly worse, but also has the best mic recording and best sound for a much cheaper price. Nah it's totally not a ripoff.
The irony: the 1020 failed due to lack of apps on Windows and now Huawei has trouble providing apps on Android.
But the thing is, it won't fail like the lumia did, one of the reason, China. They are so big in Chinese market, and since China don't use Google mobile service, they could keep developing the apps on the app gallery

@@ezrapardede1921 yeah, I guess if the things go really bad out here they can just keep on doing business in China and once this whole thing settles down they can return to the global market.
I personally don't care that much about them though and that's down to one thing: pricing. I don't think a phone should cost $1000+, so hopefully they'll also return to their roots of making good affordable devices.
