      If they do that... So far, Nokia has never pushed their technology further in a pureview. They have always changed concept and solution.
      Just imagine if Nokia worked with both Light and Oppo for their next phone. The light technology, but with the 10x optical zoom from Oppo in each of the 5 cameras. That would be so dope! But a phone like this, should also begin to consider having 2 CPUs, where the main one would run the camera and phone, while the second one would do all the processing. Look at professional DSLRs with 3+ CPUs.

    - The slow processing
    - The high temperatures when doing anything
    - The laggy camera app

  • @kain0m
    @kain0m 5 років тому +9

    Funny enough, these complaints could be transferred 1:1 to the Lumia 950. It had a great camera, which was just so much better than the competition at the time... But the processing was agonizingly slow, and it felt like the phone was going to burn in the process. And unlocking the 950 was always more miss than hit, with the constant "come a litte closer" prompt.
    This phone is proof the Nokia of today is actually the Nokia of the past. And that Windows Phone was not the problem.
    Full disclosure: I owned five Windows Phones over the years, I loved the system, I loved the high-end Lumias. But they were never without compromise....

    • @DocTime56
      @DocTime56 5 років тому

      Had a Lumia 710 and 1020 and I completely agree with you.
      The 1020 could pull off some amazing shots, and combined with Lightroom on PC, it's awesome, but the waiting times between photos are trash, and it doesn't have built-in HDR.
      You can pull the HDR effect with bracketing and Lightroom, and it's amazing for a phone, but at the cost of having to wait 15+ seconds.

    • @DocTime56
      @DocTime56 5 років тому

      The 710... That was a piece of garbage, but pretty sturdy, it lasted some brutal abuse

    • @JarmoPuskala
      @JarmoPuskala 5 років тому

      Exactly. The reason I haven't already bought the 9 is because I'm still using my 950. I could take the inconsistent unlock and slow processing, or I could take the worse low-light performance, but not sure if I'd take both.
      But on the other hand... that dynamic range on the 9 looks absolutely lovely.

    • @FAT8893
      @FAT8893 5 років тому

      Lucky for you, I am also a Lumia 950 owner, though I am using the XL version. You do have a point about the processing. When I want to see the photo, it keeps on saying "Adding the finishing touches..." for like... forever, not until I switched to the Photos gallery.
      As for unlocking the phone, well I never have any problem with the iris scanner. Even with my glasses, it still works flawlessly. But hey, PIN is still so much faster.

    • @StarfireRebirthCM
      @StarfireRebirthCM 5 років тому

      But the nokia 9 camera isnt ahead of any competition. Yes it tends to capture a little more detail when you zoom in 400% or some shit. But an unpredictable auto mode, bad edge detection, TERRIBLE low light performance, NO OIS IN ANY OF THE 5 CAMERAS.. No thanks.

    Imagine what Nokia could do with better hardware and better software.
    They could return to compete with the big bois.
    This phone could've been extremely awesome with better software, better optimization, and more features out of the box. The p30 was still better in most people's minds.
    I would jump straight back into Nokia if they took a similar attitude that oneplus had a few years back.
    Innovate, free up the restrictions, and bring a cheaper flagship killer with that same camera tech into the market. Make it a fast high tech phone with a nokia-optimized launcher, that has the best camera on the market.
    It's the shortfalls of their unoptimized software that kill the sales and hype in my opinion.

    Michael, your videos just keep getting better and better! Production quality is top-notch, but more importantly, you talk about the stuff that really matters. With a device like this, it's so easy to get carried away with the camera which, you rightly said, is the USP of the phone. But highlighting real-world issues like the buggy fingerprint scanner, the slippery surface, and the lack of storage - these are things that I feel are just as important - if not more, because these issues will impede your usage on a regular basis. Sometimes a phone just needs to be a phone.
    Keep up the great work! And sorry for the late comment. I'm in the market for a new device, and as a matter of principle, I never buy a phone that is just released. I wait 6 months to a year to let the software settle in and all the bugs to be fixed, which is why I'm only just watching this now.

    Any chance of doing a review re-do of this?

    • @JD-fk4qq
      @JD-fk4qq 4 роки тому

      Yes, that is what I am searching all over youtube. Another, more recent re-review with all the updates installed.
      Curious as to how it would fare, if there are any changes in picture quality, new modes and overall use of the phone.
      Please, will someone do it ? Though it would not be popular and most UA-camrs care about views.

    I would recommend putting the sponsor spot after the final verdict. It is a bit annoying. Other than that this is a quality video with excellent style.

    • @jaust9077

      He does that on purpose because many people as soon as his verdict is rendered end the video before the sponsor spot

    • @phineas7423
      @phineas7423 5 років тому +1

      @@jaust9077 it's about time loss, and limbo. A sponsor spot is a waste of a viewers time, unless the spot is blocking something that the viewer wants to see. This however does not make the spot useful to the viewer but puts it somewhere in an uncomfortable limbo between useful and useless. This is why people, myself included don't like this. It works on paper as viewer retention goes up, but not in practice as it degrades the quality of the video, and wastes viewers time.

    • @jaust9077
      @jaust9077 5 років тому

      Phineas youre missing the point man...research shows that people dont watch sponsor spots at the end of videos. The sponsors dont pay for people to not watch that portion so many youtubers put it somewhere in the middle of the videobor right before the end. I really dont what the issue is anyway the spot was less then 30 seconds.

    • @phineas7423
      @phineas7423 5 років тому

      @@jaust9077 I get it, and you are right about the research, and I don't think my solution of moving it to the end is a good one. For the first time in the history of art people have to sacrifice quality to make a living. As a consumer, of course I am going to ask for quality. But it's a shame that people wouldn't be able to make a living this way. My hope is that with direct funding people won't have to have sponsor spots. I said that my idea of removing sponsor spots entirely is a bad one, but the reason I still believe in it is because it's a better system than we have now.

    the storage issue is addressed by the 3.1 USB protocol not the google app, if your pc also has a USB port of the same protocol you could transfer the whole storage capacity in that phone in under 5 minutes, unlike most phones which despite having USB type C only run on USB 2.0

    I like mine, love that Android is as close to stock as your going to get, the camera is fantastic, it’s fast, battery life is decent, what more do you want. All software features have been fixed, especially the heat issue and night shots, which is the best part about owning this phone, the updates, I get at least one per week for the camera. New filters, faster processing, they just keep coming. So there is some truth about this phone feeling like a beta but that’s okay because the camera hardware is spot on in every conceivable way. As for the large files, well I simply wrote a macro that automatically connects to my PC, uploads the photos, deletes photos. Took me all of 20 min. to write and prefect the procedure.

      In doing research for a new phone, I found that there were complaints of Android updates crippling every single AndroidOne phone I was considering. The complaints about the Nokia phones were numerous and substantial enough that I had to remove them from consideration.
      I used to swear by stock Android, but that was based on my experiences with Nexus devices and Google Play editions of other manufacturers phones sold by Google itself. The AndroidOne program is clearly not providing that sort of reliability.

    The RAW images are unmatched but I think the versatility of say the upcoming P30 Pro is what I'll be going for next. Not to mention access to 40mp RAW samples, count me in. I really really love this phone and I wanted it to be my next device but I can see the shortcomings of this system so I'll have to settle for admiring the photos taken by others who get one.

    A bit more than a year after this review, the price for this phone has been reduced drastically and you can get a brand new Nokia 9 for a bit less than 300 dollars (got mine a month ago for 280). With such a price tag and all the software updates the phone got in between (Android 10, security patches, camera fixes, fingerprint sensor which is much more accurate now... though not perfect yet), it makes it worthier to own than what it was when first released last year. Just my 2 cents :=))...

    I have only just purchased the Nokia 9 Pure View, really for its still photography. I am late considering its been out quite a while.
    I have had professional level DSLR, mirroless camera before, and I still have one. I am not a professional, but an enthusiast, my knowledge of photography is adequate, but not extensive. I was looking for something light to carry I'm my pocket, but at the same time, does not take a massive performance hit.
    I am to tell, this is the finest smartphone camera I have ever used, and not by a small margin either. I have several smartphones, and I have what many people call the king of smartphone cameras now, Huwai P40 Pro, which is the second best camera on any smartphone I have used.
    Back to the Nokia 9 Pure View, I am in awe of it's capability. Purely as a smartphone, it's other features, I don't think it's in the race, hence my purchase of the Huwai P40 Pro. And I acknowledge that it's processing of images is slow, buggy type of camera app, and for outdoor night photography their are better options. And I realize this is not for your average smartphone user, who is neither a professional or enthusiast, better options for them too. But looking purely from a point of view of photography, hard core photographers, who are willing to use its settings to its full potential, and are okay with post processing on the phone, or better still on your computer in Photoshop, Lightroom or any other software, this is a no brainer. The images this camera produces, it's dynamic range, the way it keeps a lot of information in its shadows and highlights is really impressive. I have had a medium format digital camera, sometimes I feel it even edges past that. I am no way saying it compares with full frame, or medium format camera, with their high quality sensors, lenses and the ability to actually change the aperture. But for a smartphone, this is beyond my expectations, it's beautiful. And the ability to take good quality Raw images, and truly actual monochromatic images in the raw format, due to its triple monochromatic sensors! I think apart from the Leica Monochrome professional camera, I don't think there is a another digital camera with this ability, even among dedicated high end cameras. But to have this in a smartphone is impressive.
    I really hope Nokia releases the next version of this smartphone, updated and all the places were this falls short improved, whilst keeping the same photography concept of this camera, several sensors working together for jaw dropping results, and I hope the dedicated monochromatic sensors, with the ability to shoot black and white photos in Raw and Jpeg remain.
    Nokia, you really have something to be proud of, I would really like to see an improved version of this soon.

    When you were shooting long exposure in low light, did you adjust the ISO? There’s a silly bug in the camera app which causes ISO to switch from auto to 100 when you change exposure from auto to manual. You have to dial-in an appropriate ISO yourself, you can’t set it back to auto because if you do the exposure goes back to auto too! However, if you dial-in both the exposure and ISO manually, low light performance is superb with very little noise, better than anything I’ve seen from a Pixel or a Galaxy.

  • @Rickbearcat
    @Rickbearcat 5 років тому

    @9:03...I find this astounding. You have 5 camera lenses that should be able to gather 5 times the light that the Pixel does (one vs. five lenses) and yet you can't get, for some reason, enough light to shoot in a dark scene? Sounds as if only one of the camera's lenses was in operation on the Nokia; which should still work okay as the Pixel can do it. Another software flaw on the Nokia here.
