Agreed, I love Huawei phones, they aren't the best optimised in terms of software, compared to oneplus etc, but they excel at a bit of everything, e.g battery life, screen, camera.
Much of the camera system is developed in their camera R&D department in Espoo Finland. Many of the people who worked on this phone have also worked on the Nokia PureView series of phones.

No, Huawei has Leica sensors from Germany and Nokia has Carl Zeiss sensors, also from Germany, but they're different things

Last phone with a 10x optical zoom I remember (and had) was the Samsung K Zoom. At the time it was a so-so phone with a cracking camera, but performance dropped when using it on low light.
I could see myself getting used to the weight of that phone, after all it's just a bit lighter than the Mate 20X and for me using that phone is a breeze now 😂

The price is a bit steep, but for those who wanted a complete imaging device from an Android device, this is it.

I have Galaxy s20 ultra, and it is good with 100x digital zoom but unfortunately, s20 ultra has only 3x optical zoom and zero hybrid zoom.
Great job Ben! I've been waiting for this. Could you do night video in low light and very low light street conditions and zoom (5x and 10x) in periscope lens during video recording. If you have I would like to see the difference between P40 pro and P40 pro plus. Also, could users manually select which lens to use as there are so many of them. Thanks!

I love the chamfered edge around the camera unit. I don't like how dust collects around the camera on my P30 Pro (and pretty much every other phone). One of my favourite features of the P30 Pro is the under screen earpiece speaker, traditional speaker grills collect dust all the time.

Thanks Ben! The highlight of P40 Pro Plus is obviously the 10x optical zoom. Previously I thought its performance would be close to S20 Ultra's 100X space zoom, as although P40 Pro Plus has a further optical zoom range (10x vs 4x), S20 Ultra has higher pixel count (64MP vs 8MP). But it turns out there is no contest.~ It would be great if you can make a comparison video between these two phones once you get the Ultra back~~

Isn't that exaggerated with the extra zoom? I have the P40 Pro and when I change now it doesn't really bring anything to me. For printing, the device lacks the focal length, as in the case of a SLR camera, for example. The pictures that are then to be printed on a canvas are simply not to be used.

The only technical gripe from the native camera app is the position of zoom slider, making it very hard to change zoom without resorting to hand gymnastic or two hands. It should be rectified by now, but unfortunately Huawei still has not done it.
That, and the fact that it's becoming harder to install GMS on it. I wanna live in google-free world, but unfortunately my paid apps say otherwise.

awesome review, finally get to see how P40 Pro+ optical zoom is superior by alot than Samsungs S20 Ultra, hehehe. Love it, but damn, that 80x zoom on the P40 Pro + @ 8:27 is wow, you sure thats 80x?, :O wow. I could finally ditch my 1.5 yr old 12x optical monocular and just get this phone and get myself a spy camera cuz that zoom is still very useable, hahaha.

I am using Huawei mate 10 pro and i wanna go with good camera phone with reasonable price.
I was searching for weeks and finally i decided to buy Xiaomi note 10 ( many people agreed on this ). I am pro photographer and I compared photos in gsmarena. For me, 27 megapixel is really something for the price that i have to pay. Unfortunately, i cannot go with Huawei anymore :(

S20 Ultra had issues keeping subjects in focus, which I don’t know if Samsung fixed it, so does the P40 Pro Plus have that problem?
nope. that problem is due to the 108 megapixel sensor not being well optimiized. samsung's fixed it a mostly but still not perfect
Great video, Ben. I can get the P40 Pro+ for $866 from my carrier, with the Huawei Freebuds 3, and a wireless charger. Do you think it’s worth it for that price as a main device, despite the lack of GMS?
That’s a good deal. I think so. There is a hack to get google apps on the phone they works. So there’s always that. But even without gms you can still get by. It’s not ideal but not like crippling on my opinion

The phone sounds like a real solid device, with the curved edges, more premium feel and the cameras. But dang that freaking price though.
Kinda off topic but I'm actually distracted by the background, the railings and the seat dividers(?) looks great. The sloping roads are kinda scary as well (they look pretty damn steep). Also if you don't mind me asking, what's the name of the building you always shoot (4:59)? And is the interior shot (2:13) the same building as well?
One more comment, the background music was alright until the vocals came in while you were still talking (2:48 there's that hum/grunting or something when you were saying there's no creaking) so yeah, might want to take note of this next time.

Nice, 1399€ for a lil bit more camera compare to P40 Pro (999€), still 1080p, xxl hole, mono speaker... RIP Huawei
For those that want the "best" camera phone then this is it. 1080p is fine for the size and is the optimum. the front notch has dual cameras allowing infra red and 3D Face ID and many of us prefer function over form. Samsung still has a pin-hole but has lost many features and that to me is ridiculous and cheap, bravo Huawei for not bowing to those that over-value aesthetics compared to features. The mono speaker is loud and great and anyone wanting a "real" stereo experience would use headphones. The P40 Pro Plus is the same price as the S20 Ultra and is far superior to that Exynos junk; RIP Samsung!

You need to get the Silver Frost model, I think it looks the best out of all of the P40's. Feels almost like metal and doesn't attract fingerprints.
Hope they include the 100X periscope zoom or even 150X zoom in the Mate 40 Pro.
