Every year since 2014, OnePlus has released a new smartphone, and nearly every year it’s raised the price. That in turn has caused reviewers like me to ask, “is it worth the extra money?” … and for the past six years, the answer, time and again, has been yes.
This is different.
To be clear, I’m not saying the OnePlus 8 Pro doesn’t earn its asking price, which is $899. And we should remember that it’s not the first OnePlus to hit this threshold either: the McLaren edition of last year’s 7T Pro was priced the same. But if we ignore special edition phones and directly compare, generation to generation, what’s available here in the States … the OnePlus 8 Pro is a $230 jump from last year’s 7 Pro.
That’s a lot. To some it’s evidence of OnePlus losing touch with its core values, sacrificing its status as smartphone value hero and finally "becoming the villain." Does this argument hold up, or is OnePlus finally just coming into its own? Find out in the MrMobile OnePlus 8 Pro Review!

Since OnePlus 8 lite is nowhere to be seen right now, I'm guessing OnePlus is saving it to become the "T" version and a "T pro" would also be presented, killing the 8 pro.

The Samsung S20 is actually for a while now $800 (B&H, Amazon, ...). So it's at the moment more expensive. Although granted, we might see similar price cuts here later on.

He has not mentioned oneplus 8 camera. It is a downgrade to oneplus 7t camera. They have removed telephoto lens with oneplus 8 and same sensor has 7t for main camera. Oneplus is just getting greedy.

Buying a phone is a 3-4 year investment, you don't go buy a phone every month.
You do your research and buy a good phone that could last you for good amount of time, paying 1k for a oneplus for example is absurd but it could last you at least 3 years, plus on the good side we have lots of options nowadays you can buy a great phone for way less than that absurd price.

Peter the Panda In the age of overkill speced gimmcky flagships. Came in OP the phone that was just right. It justified its price tag and the purchase decision for the end user was a no brainer. The price is what helped it with sales. The most optimised smartphone with just enough featured for unbelievable price. Just when we thought OP caputred the masses. @@maximumclutch8113 I get it, and I respect your opinion. Honestly, I haven't used a punchhole phone longer than 30 mins at once. Something like the Note 10 is way better than the S10 or S10+, and you probably don't notice it after a while. But for fullscreen videos and just the idea of it. It's a compromise for me. People hated the new Pixel, but I loved it way more than the iPhones and other flagships. I just feel, my Note 8 is amazing. The display, the camera for my use cases, the battery for the age of my phone... you are a note user I don't need to go into it. That being said. I am at the end of my contract and I can upgrade, but I am waiting for the note 20 or 21 to get the under display technology, the latter sounding more realistic if I look at all the leaks of the S21. I want an ip68 rated uninterrupted display phone.

@@Saurabh-hx1yp It's probably more in the sense that in that price category, it's up against both the iPhone 11 Pro and the Pixel 4, both of which have excellent cameras in the context of smartphones.
OnePlus historically hasn't been exactly stellar with cameras. In the past, people would be fine because they were saving money on them. Right now though, with this phone very nearly $1000 in price, it's inevitable that they're gonna compare it to nothing but the best and while this is the best OnePlus camera ever (I mean, that's obvious), they've still got some ways to go.

@@Saurabh-hx1yp I'm not really complaining though. I still use a 2.5 year old Galaxy Note8 as my daily, of which its camera performance is good but nothing outstanding anymore. I have the Fujifilm X-T3 along with an assortment of gear for when I'm going for a proper photoshoot.
Just at least explaining why people would kinda feel a bit salty about the camera. And to be fair to the S20 Ultra, they are being pretty ambitious about it......maybe too ambitious.

OnePlus 'Never Settle' - OverPriced 'Never Cheap'. OnePlus used to be a flagship killer but no more. With the world in lock down and unemployment rising, who has the money to burn? MId-range phones are going to be future whether we like it or not.
I see zero reason to "upgrade" from my 7 Pro. The hole punch alone makes this a non-starter for me.

There is no reason to upgrade from 1 or 2 years old flagship phones, unless your screen is broken or the phone has other issues. Never understood why people have the need to upgrade their phones every year. If you have a flagship, it should be ok for 2-3 years, sometimes even more
I see no reason for me to upgrade from my OnePlus 5T. This price will make me go towards the competition.

Same here. I have oneplus 3t, had it for years, still works great but might upgrade to 7t pro at the end of the year. It's currently 530ish and I'd imagine towards the year end it'll be even cheaper. Basically last year's flagships are more or less the same as current flagships. As theres not that big of a jump in tech so paying a grand for a phone just seems silly to me.
Agreed. With android phones they lose almost half their value after 6 months and all the bugs/issues have been worked out by then. That's why I always buy a 6 month old flagship.

Galaxy s20 are on sale for this price. This brings it into crowded territory.
Its okay for US where S20 comes with Snapdragon. But for us in the exynos region, OP8Pro is much more appealing. You may lose out slightly on the camera but you get better perfomance overall.

Everyone complained about OnePlus phones not having wireless charging and a water resistant rating. Now they have some of the fastest wireless charging on the market and the ips rating. Neither of those 2 options are cheap. So if you want the options you have to pay. And the OnePlus 8 pro is still a cheaper option than a lot of other flagships so I'd say it's still a flagship killer. Just my opinion

I rewatched this video and even back on OnePlus 6 and 6T days I have been wanting to know what is the point of having an all screen bezel-free display of you'll be compromising or marring the fluidity of OLED panels with a notch or a hole punch cutout?! I said this then and I'll say it again, I for one still prefers having a thin top bezel given that there's no way yet that OEMs can perfectly hide the camera under the display without any compromises or sacrifices such as a pop up module. Besides they could've used that top bezel to introduce technologies such as Infrared based/3D ToF camera for more secured face unlock and depth sensing portrait photos. Unless they can perfectly hide the camera without holes and notches I would still prefer a top bezel just like in older Samsung Galaxy flagships (S8- Note9) rather than an impractical cutout or notch that mars the perfectness of an OLED screen.

When people complain about palm rejection on curved screens, its because they didnt use it as their personal device, because when you have a case on, it is never a problem. Goes to show how this reviewers dont actually use the phone like a normal person.

I've had my OnePlus 8 Pro since late May - Australian customer, I had to import it as they're still not selling them here officially. From personal experience, and from what I can tell reading various comments and threads, it seems after the few updates the device has gotten since it's release, this phone is now right up there in terms of all round features, camera quality, phone performance, etc with Apple and Samsung... honestly, I have used this thing heavily everyday for work and it's not let me down once.
S20 plus is $200 off. Is that the better choice?
in my opinion no, this oneplus has a better screen, better battery, better fingerprint scanner, more ram, and comes with a faster charger in the box

I'm also really disappointed they dropped the pop up camera, I own the 7 Pro and apart from wireless charging which I still don't consider worth it... You still need to be attached to a cable via the charging Dock anyway.. May as well just use the standard twice as fast warp charger..? Apart from that I don't see enough of an increase to warrant upgrading for... The cameras on the 7 Pro have had multiple updates and I do use gcam so photography is fine... Speed of course is fine... And I prefer the blue of the 7 Pro to the matt finish of the 8 pro... Camera hump seems to be bigger this year too....
i had a oneplus 3 upgraded to a pixel 2 and omg out of the three smartphones i've owned i tend to use them awhile and i had a Motorola razr in 2012 like a weirdy the oneplus 3 with oxygen os and the screen gesture control draw a circle on the screen it opens the camera draw a check mark you turn on the flash light is still my favorite smartphone i have owned
I'll stick with my OnePlus 7 Pro. I don't care about wireless charging and I much prefer the fully uninterrupted screen on the 7 Pro over the camera cut out on the 8 Pro.

I hated my Oneplus 6 because the battery life was shit, though for some users it may be alright, obviously if I want a good battery I can get the 6t, I guess most people would be fine wit the regular 6, but not me.

I just picked up the OnePlus 7 Pro [8GB/256GB] at T-Mobile for $450. That's half the price of the 8 Pro with 128GB, which is not enough storage when there's no micro SD support. Is it really worth $450 more when there are still 2 years of Android updates coming to the 7 Pro ? 5G support means you can consume your monthly 50GB data allotment in a matter of minutes.
All the "flagship killer" BS was clearly a publicity stunt to brand up.
Well I mean they did offer a lot of brilliant phones at a very reasonable price for years, and if these folks want to try something different, let them be. Also there's the OnePlus 8 that's still cheaper than most of the flagships out there.

Jeez. You guys really can't take having a flagship phone having a flagship price. It's expensive now because it's a flagship. Not because they had some secret agenda to grow the company. Oneplus made good cheap phones back in the day. But for Oneplus to survive with the big dogs getting better, they had no choice. Don't buy it if your wallet says so.

Idk, LGs have headphone jacks still (and the best quality DACs)... Yet almost nobody buys them. Everybody says it's such a huge problem, but the majority of their purchasing dollars say otherwise.
@@benjmiester I buy a phone every year. Currently using the Redmi K20 Pro. Will replace it around August. And I m sure as hell not gonna buy a phone that doesn't have headphone jack.
@@benjmiester To be fair LG has a hard time selling for two big reasons. 1. They UI is not close to stock android or are polished as say Samsung's (never thought I'd say that after hating touchwiz). 2. LG has a horrid reputation due to the bootloop issues the G2-G4 had, don't get me started on the awful LG G5, worthless device completely died on me in barely 17 months.
In Canada the Pro comes to approx $1600. So it on par with the Ultra20 and the other flagship players. I might as well wait for the Iphone since I know their camera will be outstanding and will cost around the same. This is coming from someone who never considered getting an iphone. I really miss oxygen os but unfortunately even the oneplus is not a viable option I can rely on as I prefer buying unlocked. I enjoyed the balance they had. I get the move but the draw for 5g isn't there for me. Also I wish they kept that selfie camera. Maybe I hyped myself up for this launch so feel a bit let down at some of the gimmicks they added.

The sad thing is now that we need a brand new manufacturer to come out with great phones at fair prices to stop Samsung and Apple from asking $2,000 next year for a top phone.

It's hard to beat the likes of the The Pixel and iPhone when it comes to camera. I'm still impressed they've brought it to the level it's at.
I still think LG would be one of the best choices if they just fixed their software.
And maybe update their phones in a more timely manner!

They should’ve switched the colors for the Pro for the regular OnePlus. That’s how distinguish the two or just give both the same colors.

We can rely on you @MrMobile to give an unbiased and thoughtful review...Thank you! I bought a brand new 7T last month and for once I'm not envious or wishing I had waited for the 8 or 8 Pro. I for one am not willing to pay extra for 5G, or an IP rating, when 4G here in the UK is plenty fast enough and my 7T is (apparently!) as waterproof as I need. Wireless looks great though must admit!
to me what makes 1000$ phones okay is the fact that on a contract it doesnt change much but since oneplus arent on contracts unless you have tmobile and live in the states and that the main reason oneplus got popular was the price to performance im not against expensive flagships im just annoyed oneplus is doing it to me the 7 and 7 pro pricing was their limit
Another smartphone I´m not going to buy dor 1 reason: It is too expensive! I´m still fine with Xiaomi Pocophone F1.
Or the new K30 Pro. SD865, LPDDR5, UFS3.1 and a sweet no punchhole display. Flash Pixel Experience on that thing, and you're golden.

My last oneplus was a 6t. I feel like the 7t was their peak... it’s all downhill from here for all of us fans from the beginning. But now my sister knows what a oneplus is and she only knows iPhones... so they are getting their name out there better at least.
It's interesting how phone prices continue to Skyrocket my neighbor still has his note 4 and it's still going strong I gotta say I smiled when I saw him use the IR blaster why the hell did they ever get rid of that the only phones that carries it now I think are xiaomi

I went on r/OnePlus and saw a few posts by users saying that their OP8 Pro is having screen burn in literally hours after purchasing the device. Is anyone else having such issues?

The truth is many people who bought OnePlus phones in the beginning can't afford them anymore. Without whose support OnePlus wouldn't be where they are now. They should make a phone like Pixel 3a.
Whereas I don't "mind" the hole.punch, I def prefer the pop-up and willing to sacrifice IP 68 for it...I mean, they could still feasibly get like an IP 50 something even with the pop-up camera

I'm really on the fence of buying a OnePlus 8 pro. I'm trying to wait until they come out with the one plus nine pro see how that looks. Before I trade in my Samsung Galaxy S10. I don't know if I can wait that long but we'll see....
