Iceland Volcano Updates | No signs of slowing down

- Hello everybody!
The activity on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland continues with another eruption being expected in late February or early March.
The infrastructure that got damaged by the previous eruption on February 8th has been patched up even the road that lava flowed over. You may be wondering how they managed to fix the road that fast with the lava still being so fresh, well, all that's needed is a bunch of gravel which you dump over the lava field and pave a road, pretty cool.
Those were news from the north side of Mt. Þorbjörn, if you look south of the mountain, the news isn't as good.
Grindavík's water supply is crippled as its main water pipe, which is covered by lava from the January 14th eruption, is, as you would expect, leaking.
That means the water pressure in the town isn't sufficient to support all the homes so our construction workers are now focusing on fixing that.
Other areas in Iceland are also making some noise.
Eldey, which is a scenic island off the coast of Reykjanes, is within an area named after itself. This area was the site of a recent earthquake swarm.
Does this point towards action in the not-so-distant future?
There have been some amazing band-aid solutions to the chaos caused by the last few eruptions, no doubt about it. It is quite miraculous to watch the repairs, and the restoration of critical needs infrastructure for important populated areas (eg. Grindavik, Reykjanes Penn). But even with all these efforts, it still makes me feel like this is a band-aid solution. There is no plausible nor logistical solution to what may come, as the volcanic "wake up" call continues to quake and shake and move below the ground in this Iceland area. Yes, there are many things to worry about. But I do thank you as always for your update and perspective. All the best! And keep the information coming!
Thank you for the update and greetings from Quebec, Canada. I lived in Iceland from 1996 to 2003, I still have many friends there (and some are living on the Reykjanes peninsula) and I really care about what is going on.
thanks for the update - we continue to hope for the best outcomes for all those affected
Many thanks once more Gylfi ❤
Just Icelandic signs off with Gylfi. I thought it was his name .... this is not his channel but I suppose they could both have the same name.
@@gwh0 hahahaha, we've been mixed up sometimes😂
It's alright, I just take it as a compliment as his videos are really good.
Sorryl lol
@@Hliarmenn Thanks for confirming that my senility is still a few years away.
Já, it’s great to see all the great videos from here, Gylfi and Isak.
A great Icelandic collab is around the corner, maybe? 😅
Thank you from Canada. Always interesting and I am continuing to monitor.
Ayy, thanks for tuning in 😁
Thank you for the update. The rising continues, getting ready for the next one. You have to live with it.
Thank you for this update. I am impressed at the speed of repairs, but also disappointed at some of the silly decisions. For example keeping the blue lagoon open during the eruptions...
Yeah definitely, there have been some really questionable decisions made by the government during this eruptive period
It's too bad that the Grindavik water supply has been impacted. It may be a blessing in disguise though if there are more eruptions near the town and more fissures opening inside of it -- don't want to see people return and not be safe!
great work keeping us all informed. Be safe.
Thank you!
Thanks for this. Might be short, but to the point.
Thankyou
3:08 Behind every dead cow, is an Icelandic text.
That's damn right
@@HliarmennI hear the area is getting closer to an eruption than previously thought. Haven't been able see what's going on, but what does the uplift and other data show?
Thank you Gylfi, take care
Thank you for the update.❤
You're welcome!
Thank you for the update! 😊
You're welcome 😁
Thank you from South Africa
Ayyy, you're welcome!
Great report! Thank you so much for keeping us up to date with what is occurring now. Times are definitely changing for Iceland. Here’s hoping the lessons learned will result in positive steps forward in the future, with no more loss of life. Cheers from Down Under … 😁🌴🌴🌴
Yeah, I really hope a lot will be learnt from this.
Thanks for tuning in 😁
Thanks for sharing, I saw the Blue Lagoon evacuation map has two options: West and East. The latter going by the powerplant and then North over road 43. I now know this is actually possible to cross last Thursday's lava
I am glad to hear that they managed to build a temporary gravel road across the February lava flows. I was worried that they were trying to open the Blue Lagoon with only the road south as an exit. This new connection gives two exit routes.
The main exit route might be a fissure with or without lava opening up and merely swallowing up lagoon and tourists. What may allude to be the most memorable and definitive Exit; hopefully transmitted live by an "influencer" to pander for the numerous fellow narcissistic vacuous Gen-Z's. Has all the makings of a real disaster movie.
I think Eldey is the source of the magma. I thinks there is the pass to the plume and it goes all the way at the plate boundary and to the surface. I think the water held it down until it reaches the land and than: Boom! That is my opinion. Thanks for the video, you know, I like them so much.
Would be awesome if we could plant more seismic equipment there to get a better idea of what's going on there, would definitely be cool to see if Eldey is responsible for the activity on the peninsula
Why not put more equipment on Elďey?
@@elizabethwilliams3267 good question. I'm not sure.
Could be due to harsh conditions but I think it's just that experts haven't set out to install them yet.
Hopefully they will in the future
Here’s my speculation, I’m afraid, according to the patterns that have been set forth by the system. The Town of Grindavic is in for an eruption either in town or on the edge of town. I am most certainly hope it doesn’t but I have my concerns.
It definitely isn't out of the question but like you said, I really hope we'll not see that happen😬
@Hliarmenn
Hello what are your thoughts on an eruption in The Blue Lagoon or Power Plant ?
@@Deb-vu7gk I think it's unlikely a fissure opens inside the Blue lagoon as there aren't any signs that it has happened in the past, atleast not in 8000 years.
But lava flows, on the other hand, could possibly be of concern as the Blue lagoon is located at a low point in the area meaning lava looks there.
Hopefully the barriers will be able to redirect the lava efficiently to protect it and the Geothermal plant.
Thank you for another update
You're welcome 😁
Does Eldey mean simply Fire Island?
Greetings from Poland
Yes

Good bit about Snorri. I think we will have another big one next month!
Hopefully we'll not have endure an eruption like the one that killed is livestock
I don't really see Grindavik being habitat again for a long time. Too much unpredictability about eruptions.
Yeah, that is definitely true. Could be looking at months or even years
How well did Snorre´s original cowskin saga´s hold up over time ? Do we still know his method of conserving the hides ?
That's a really interesting question, I haven't found anything that mentions how the original copies held.
There's however one copy that dates back to 1270 which floated around Scandinavia for some time before ending back up in Iceland in 1971.
Eruption Feb 29th following minimal quake warning adjacent Port and also explosive to seaward is my personal prediction. Should help clarify many issues and forward planning and make for a morbid Tourist attraction. Blue lagoon I think will hang on for a few more weeks then also make history with all the mass fatalities that are seemingly necessary to rationalise what a Risk Assessment really infers. Hindsight and fatal mistakes are sometimes the only way some can learn and change policies. Look for similar inspiration at the White Island fiasco; may have been the same operational methodology otherwise more commonly known as Denial..
I'm not convinced that the holes they filled in the town is the right thing to do. Wouldn't the lava just make itself another channel?
Yeah, they would not stop the magma. The intention is to prevent people from falling in.
Why are they still heating Grindavík? Can't they simply drain the water and let it cool?
Unfortunately, as it gets really cold here in Iceland, we can't do that. If we'd cut the hot water supply it would result in a lot of frost damage that would be really expensive. Since there are still hopes and efforts being made to save the town, hot water will be on.
There's also all the fishing port facilities. I doubt anyone is planning to live there permanently anymore, but if they can keep all the fish processing areas working, then people might spend overnight in temporary housing as they go through fishing season, and then clear out at end of season. But you'll need functional infrastructure for that.
Wasn’t Eldey involved in earthquakes during the eruption of Surtsey? 🌋
It's unlikely they were related as the eruption of Surtsey happened quite far away from Eldey in the Vestmannaeyjar volcanic system. But who knows, maybe the jolts on the Reykjanes peninsula fired up something there to the west.
Dutchsinse channel predicts earthquakes based on tectonic plates and expanding waves from those earthquakes - he is remarkably accurate
I speculate, therefore I am.......... One for the algorithym...
Gylifi for president!!!
I agree
i dont get why Icelandiansalways complain about their volcanos. they should just chill and enjoy tfree fireworks.its not like they only one with volcanoes. stop making big deal out of it
Thanks for the update Gylfi. You sexy BEAST!
You are aware that this is a different channel?
Yes its Gylfis other channel@@liviq
Gylfi is Just Icelandic.
