  • The last 24 hrs. have been extremely hectic since the lava barriers were about to bust last night due to a lava pond that suddenly took off but today a certain balance was achieved which we hope it to last until the eruption stops. It is however too early to say, overall we are just at this very sensitive point in time that might determine the outcome for Grindavik.

Same. The first place I'm usually looking for updates is if there is a pinned comment on the most recent video or a message in the community tab.
The community allows sharing images which is nice. Its not the greatest platform for images as I can't seem to properly zoom or enlarge them on mobile. But its better than having to check a different social media platform altogether. I personnally don't use FB and IG only very rarely. Also, Twitter/X is dead to me since Elon happened.

    • @opalishmoth8591
      @opalishmoth8591 Місяць тому +22

That fence legitimately gives me hope
Because it proves there is a stage of a flow where it still can creep forward.
But the heat is well insulated.
And the forward push is weak enough it can’t even push over a humble picket fence, and instead follows the fence line.
Granted that clearly happened as the flow stopped, but it still proves an important point.
A regular garden fence can act as an effective barrier against slow moving flow front.
Which sounds freaking ridiculous and dumb but we can see evidence it undeniably happened.
And based on everything I’ve seen with the ingenuity, dedication abs bravery of Icelanders, I know they can use that fact to their advantage.

    • @1nm1
      @1nm1 Місяць тому +9

@@opalishmoth8591 I think the primary reason the fence "worked" is because the lava vent stopped pretty fast, so by the time the lava reached the fence line it didn't have the weight/pressure of additional (liquid) lava pushing the cooled down lava forward through the fence.
Conversely, that is also what makes the current situation so alarming. The town's barriers were ONLY made to stop a SHORT-term lava flow like the previous eruptions, rather than a continuous flow that occurred repeatedly during the "tourist" eruptions to the NW in previous years. Obviously, with the 3+ months they have had those city barriers could (should) be a lot more robust by now, but as to the reasons why that wasn't done, this isn't the time or place for that discussion.

I’m not sure if this is what you are looking for…. Other channels I’ve seen use YT Community posts to share off-YT Web sites where they post articles, pictures, etc.; and also post Community notifications for the channel.
I’ve been following you since this craziness started three years ago (!), remembering the impact to air traffic from the 2010 eruption. It is hard not to wonder and worry. It does not matter that we have never met. On this side of the Internet I am heart-broken for Grindavik’s residents and marvel at Icelanders resilience. Keeping in touch matters. It’s good to hear from you Gylfi.
I watched the quarry filling up on Thursday on Isak Finnbogsan’s channel. I may have misspelled his name.
He had lost his drone on Wednesday and had to borrow one from a dealer.
The weather had the drones using up their batteries in minutes.
It was quite spectacular to see the lava actually melt away the ridge above the quarry and finally he was given permission to go to the quarry where he didn’t have to fight the winds.
You should watch his last video.
I’m happy to see you are back to work again.

It's amazing how much has changed - cracks through the town, berms all around, lava flowing into town, the quarry now completely filled and then some, and all the land around the berms completely changed. It's amazing that the south coast road survived, especially when we saw on Isak's footage how much lava was on the move when it inundated the quarry. I look forward to you having a chat with Shawn Willsey when he gets back from Europe.

I am still amazed that wooden fence in Grindavik held up against the lava. Someone did point out that the vent by that point was losing steam and there wasn't enough liquid lava to push the front of the flow forward. Either way, quite amazing to see the fence have not one single scorch mark on it.

Take all the time you need to get fully well again, taking time with your drafts and plans to fly your drone again. Your videos have been absolutely incredible, and you deserve lots more subscribers to take you past the magic 100K. Best wishes from Wendi UK. 🌻

We are just glad you're returning to good health, Gylfi. This is such a great video, with lots of the Before & After that shows the big picture so well. It has been quite a 'show' watching the progress of the lava flows, on both Shawn Wilsey's and Isak's channels. Today's tech for live-streaming is just amazing.
Love the footage of the Super-Fence! The contractor or builder who put that in, should really use it for advertising...

Your coverage of the truckers building the lava barriers is an essential part of the story. I welcome more such details of the strenuous efforts of humans to battle the unrelenting forces of nature. I’m amazed that a lava barrier is even possible. The speedy accomplishment of this engineered response is even more amazing. Those truckers are heroes! Was such a barrier even considered possible at Heimaey eruption several years ago?

Good wishes for a fast, full recovery from your illness. And for the evolution of this eruption in a direction that sends it in a safe path. Those truckers really are heroes!

Glad you're feeling better! I'm a worst-case-scenario thinker, so I'm relieved to hear it was just the flu and not something like a heart attack. You make great videos. Greetings from Michigan, USA.

We are all rooting for you. Great pictures and thank you for being levelheaded about the situation. Too many people put huge titles and click bait to get subscribers. Hopefully this mess will calm down or even be over soon so you can get back home and rest. Glad you are collaborating with other Icelanders , a good example for the resilience of the Icelandic people.

Last winter we visited Iceland for the first time. What a fantastic, unique country. Lovely people too.
We became trapped in a snowstorm whilst driving to the Blue Lagoon and, along with about 50 other vehicles, had to be rescued by an intrepid team of snow plough drivers.
They dug a route for our convoy, in the dead of night. In gale force winds, we eventually inched our way towards the lovely town of Grindavik.
Once rescued, we stayed in an Airbnb by the town's sports field (soccer pitch?)
The next day we eventually made our way to the Blue Lagoon for our swim. I cannot recommend a visit to the pool strongly enough (wear a woolly hat though).
We have such fond memories of our trip, but especially of Grindavik. Never has a drive into a new town been so appreciated. We had a lovely warm night there and everyone was so welcoming and kind (throughout our trip).
Grindavik became my family's special little town, full of such treasured memories - and now this little fishing town is world famous. That blows our minds.
We wish you every success Grindavik. And thank you for giving my family, and all the others, refuge that night. It was extremely appreciated.
    Good luck!

Make "lava-dike(river) " towards Grindaviks Bryggan. There are enough room for narrow dike to sea throug . Twisting Throught Keilisund road. Saving buildings.

Thank you, this was impressive news. Your channel is getting better and better. And imo it already shows signs of your collab with Prof. Shawn Wilsey.
And it proves your honesty and sincerity to point to other YTs' channels, as for example Isak's.
No rivalry, no jealousy, but cooperation to provide reliable and comprehensive information from all available sources. Great work!
Thankyou again, stay safe and take good care of yourself.
Best wishes and greetings from an 🇦🇹 living in 🇩🇪
