Hi Everyone, I appreciate all the comments. So, I have an electrical engineering degree and in that world a lot of us always said Chassis and not "Chas-ey" referring to Chassis Ground. However, technically after doing some research I admit "Chas-ey" is the official pronunciation.
and do call them engines or motors?
Don't go crazy on the motor. Do it for 2k.
Don't use a 4l60. Use the 4l80.
Any way you could share the actual spreadsheet? I would like to start using yours as a baseline.

I just saw a Factory Five truck for sale for $40,000 CDN (just a touch over $30K USD). It looked absolutely beautiful. I wanted to go look at it but it was gone in 2 days. Not surprised.
I appreciated this video to really add up the additional costs you get into with this project. I just started researching this and thought "oh, this is going to be $35-40K" and you definitely set me straight that if I want to do it right there are a lot of other line items I would need to look into. You didn't scare me away from doing the project, but I really appreciate the very detailed walk through so I can research areas I hadn't even considered! Thanks.
Good to hear. I will be updating the cost as I get into it. There is definitely things I do not have on the list yet that will add more cost. But also keep in mind I did pick, Coupe, Engine covers, rear exhaust, air conditioning so it is pretty filled out.

Nice video Jim, Love all the goofy comments! Some peoples kids. I have a MK4 from FFR and it is the best company to deal with out of all kit car suppliers. Get both stages at once and save 1800 on shipping. You can build it cheaper than you show. But you will so enjoy this build and the whole FFR community is #1. Good luck!

Watch any of the car auctions on TV- those hot rods go for 20-30K - you can drive away in one without 10 years of toil and 2 divorces for 1/3 the build cost. And in the end you have a car that looks just like a million others that show up at the ubiquitous Saturday morning hot rod club meeting.
That is the dirty secret with those kit cars.... the resale on those cars is horrible and don't expect them to increase in value at all. That's why I may stick with a c6 even though I'd love one of their Daytona or gtm models.
@@user-qr7ee2cp4y I would just feel funny about relying on someone else's handiwork putting the car together. I suppose it would still be a good choice and way cheaper to buy a car someone else has built...I would just be inclined to inspect every single bolt and rivet even if that means partial disassembly and rebuilding it haha.
@@barrybarry8564 a very valid point... I'd love to build one myself but don't feel confident in my abilities. If you build the whole thing yourself and don't have to pay for labor I'd bet you wouldn't lose as much money when you finally sell. Great cars either way you slice it. Love the daytona.
Building Hot Rod was originally done by kids that couldn't afford a new car, they pulled one out of a junk yard and got to work. That's the soul of hot rodding. Today the only thing in junk yards are beige Camrys so thankfully Factory Five makes this kit for a good price. Just get a used small block Ford or Chevy and rebuild it cheap and drop in a T-5 or BW T-10 4-speed (hot rods like motorcycles should never have automatic trans) and this light weight roadster will be a blast to drive. Upgrade stuff later as money allows and that will keep the car fun to own, if you do everything all at once there's nothing left.
My brother had $65k into his '32 Deuce coupe with awesome motor. He enjoyed it for 25 years going to rallies and trips. Sold it for $22k. Sure wasn't able to race. Drag racing, yes. Fast. Hope you make one. I am out. Dreamt about it for a long time.
Many people posting dont understand why someone would spend that much on a car they built. Yes there are cheaper options but he built it the way he wanted.
Nce video i think a lot of people see the price of the kit and jump right in.
Later finding out it is a money pit that when completed is not worth 1/2 of what they put into it. It would be a fun build. But like you I would upgrade myself right into the poor house if budget was not held closely to my wallet.
The steel body has never been released - that will save you some $$.
The hot rod has a functional horn button already (not like the roadster with a button on the dash)
You don’t come to terms on the money you spent until you finally realize you only spend money doing things like this for yourself and once you realize this, you quit asking how much stuff costs. I can’t remember how many times I spent money customizing a vehicle and taking a huge loss when it was sold or traded. My last build was a 2017 F250 coincidently when I finally realized I didn’t do this for gain, I did it because I enjoyed it, and I know the next guy driving that truck loves it just as much as I loved building it.

I get people wanting to build their own car, well really just assembling a car when you buy one of these kits. I can buy a finished show quality 34 Ford, disassemble it, ship it to you with a reverse disassembly manual and a drivetrain for a lot less than the kit price with out the drivetrain.

Figure 20% contingency. If you figure paying yourself $10 an hour, you should finish at around 150 k.

I think you pay a lot for the enjoyment and headache of building, buying, outsourcing etc.. If you can get the essentials like frame and body, then adapt a drive train from a wrecked car you and then do almost 100% of the work, could probably save a butt load. If you just want a hot rod to drive and show off, then its probably best to hit the auctions. I see pretty nice looking machines going for a whole lot less at Mecum.
With all due respect, have you considered a 2020 mid engine Corvette?
Absolutely as a car to buy. Might be one in my future, but has nothing to do with building a car.
When I priced out a total build that I would do myself and painting it myself, it was cheaper to buy a 2019 corvette. With a corvette, I have a warranty and tech. No warranty on the build. So I bought the corvette and it saved me 6 months of my time.
When building, you are the warranty!
Street Rod Jim I understand that you are the “quality control” when you do the build. I just spent three years completely restoring a 1953 Ford F100. I enjoy the build but my family did not want me spending more time in the garage. They wanted me to spend the time with them. I just did not want to tie up all my time outside of my regular job, building another car. Good luck on your build. They are certainly very cool cars.
Just get a 350 from a junk yard and build it for $1,500 plus a few hundred for a 4 speed man's transmission.

Yes, there was some supply issues with the steel body. I heard the V2 FG body is way better than V1; plus a removable dash.

@@alexvelez2141 Sorry for not being clear. The 33 Hot Rod version 2 has just been released this year. There is much upgraded including the Frame, Fiberglass body, Removable dash, larger cabin space, floor panels/insulation and a slew of other things.... all for the better.

@@alexvelez2141 Yes, the current price on their website is for the V2. I do not believe V1 is available.
Chrome plating is brittle. Applied to stressed parts, (like suspension), over time, cracks from the surface can spread down into the structural part. That's a Bad Thing. (Probably not tragic if it's merely an alternator bracket, though.)
why not just start with a steel car and build it the way you want...or are you stuck on the 33 kit? I have had my '37 ford club coupe for 18 yrs now..bought a good solid car and made a nice resto-rod.
Multiple Reasons. 1: It is my first car so I am getting acclimated. 2: Love this car 3: It is race performance out of the box. Where most cars and especially other kits are not. Even though I am not racing, I like knowing it handles well. 4: I did not want to bust my hands on dissembling a rusted old car. But after going through this, I would be willing to do a ground up restoration on something. I will know how to install, steering, A/C, seats etc... It is a course in how to all on it's own. 5: I would not know what frame goes with what suspension goes with etc.... This kit allows me to customize as much or as little as I want but without the worry of something not working out. All the parts are made to work with each other for the most part..
Find a vehicle at copart that has all the bits you will need like a Comaro or a pickup, strip the motor trans wiring electronics HVAC fuel system exhaust door locks wipers window regulators body seals every thing that you can either use or sell or swap and you will drop the cost by a third.
Pull the trigger street rod Jim they always cost more but if you’re thrifty which it sounds like you’re trying to do the right decision making by it and start building it it’s a learning process and an enjoyable one there’s not a lot of people that can say I built this whole complete car myself even though it is a kit car it’s still building a complete rolling driving car I have done two and looking forward to building many more there is a guy I believe he’s out in Chandler that builds a lot of Factory 5 cars roasters street rods and G TMs look him up nice guy he is on a lot of the forms his name is Gordon Leavy he could help you out with a lot of the questions and concerns you may have good luck with whatever decision you make

Wow for that price I would just buy a new car off the lot and save about $20,000.00
Buy a doner car and total cost would be around 30k
When you add the options you want, the FFR bill will be over 30K. Unless you just buy it stripped down which would not be the average choice since you will want some custom options.
Love car and motorcycles always have. My issue is not being to wholly own my car. Once I knew what registration meant, I realized I didn't own my car and no one with license plates owns their ride either. Constitution if we're being honest with ourselves means everything if you're an American. We are supposed to sovereign, the government never was. So why buy and gift my hard earned work in building a car I can't keep? It's bad enough I you can't buy a car off a lot and maintain the M.S.O....

On there web page they say the total kit without engine trans rear end $19 grand he don't even have the body and he's at $20 k i was going to get one bcuz $20k sounded great plus we get to do the work but i hate being bullshitted or humped with no lube so its like factory 5's F%k-A-Ree we tell u what u want to hear but thats not the whole car for that price lol
You are completely wrong in your judgement. It is pretty explicate on the site. The kit starts around $20K with body for a roadster. Many add on choices can be made that will bring it to $30-40K. Then you need to add paint, wheels and tires and drivetrain. Some people want a simple car for racing, and some want a show car. I am building a super nice show car with a lot of extra pieces. If you want something down and dirty, $22K which included Moser Rear end + used 5.3L LS $500 and a $500 Trans. Used tires and wheels $300 and you are up and running. To each there own which is the whole point of this car.
