    That is one pretty truck at the end. And you are lucky to have a neighbor with some experience. Thinking about it, not surprising that the fuel tank would be problematic. Not a sexy part of the car, but they want it as large as possible and as cheap as possible. Go figure that it ends up being large, awkward and not fitting well.
    You also remind me of a quote, "How do you eat an elephant?" One bite at a time...

    I have thought about doing this for years. It shows me just how much goes into this project and not something to take on lightly. But really enjoying the build and your attention to detail. Keep up the great build.

    Would calling a mobil welding service, or take the tank to a local fab shop to cut the raised up tab off and reweld it help with the fitment? Or is it more than just that one bracket?

      I think I am good, but that would be the next option.

    Jim watching you i'm begging to think i'm glad i have one of the last vs1 33 built . only thing is mine is one of the 8 all steel ones . we'll see how it goes for hanging the body being only one of eight.

    • @StreetRodJim
      @StreetRodJim  4 роки тому

      I was waiting for the steel to go into production but.... I am totally curious how easy or not easy the body work goes for you. Let me know.

    I just bought a completed 33 hot rod. Ive noticed fuel leaking out between the two aluminium sheets under the gas tank. Do you have to lift the body off the car to access the gas tank? Thanks

      The first thing I would do is remove the seats and the waterfall behind it. This will give you access to the plumbing incase the issue is there. Might be an easy fix, or at least you can assess the situation. If you need access to the back, then trough the trunk, there is a panel that can be removed. However in the V2 model, it is not possible with the body on due to the gas fill tube. Might be different in your model which will make it easier to take off this panel and see what is going on. But most of what you need to see is in the front, except for the fill tube. If you need to remove the tank to reweld or such, yes, the ALL body parts need to come off the car in this order. Side panels, Hood, valance, trunk, doors, door hinges, then body. That is the only way to get to it for removing it. Hope this helps. Also, with V1's, you might need to trickle in the gas when filling otherwise it will overflow. Verify that it was not as simple as that.

      @@StreetRodJim thanks for the response! The kit was purchased in 2014 and completed in 2015. I hope I just overfilled the tank. However after siphoning close to 4 gallons of gas, there is still a leak between the two aluminum panels. Albeit the leak is now much smaller. I will start with removing the seats and waterfall

      @@nathanhaines1549 Good luck with it. If you do not have a manual you can get a PDF. However, taking something apart is way easier than staring at a million parts in boxes. LOL

    Just a thought. You said the tank was warped, has it been pressure tested?

    Do you need to be a machinist or engineer to work on these kit cars. Not an endorsement for getting a kit car.

    • @StreetRodJim

      Not really, but it does help. I never used a grinder on metal parts before the project and now I am getting comfortable and don't even hesitate to use it. You will see this play out on my videos. I think of it as a learning experience. Keep in mind this is a turn key kit (without drive train). Just think how much modification you would have to do if you were starting with parts you sourced from multiple companies. A lot of welding and cutting for the whole suspension and frame.

  • @jasonsirois3591

    Dude...you're using an angle grinder to cut aluminum.....smh. what did you expect? I can't think of a more inappropriate tool for the task.

    • @patcar5616

      What would have been the appropriate tool for the situation?

    • @jasonsirois3591
      @jasonsirois3591 4 роки тому +2

      @@patcar5616 a pair of tin snips would be my choice, for the precision and the cleanliness of cut. I bet the cut with the grinder looks like it was chewed by a rabid animal. Furthermore, grinding or cutting aluminum with those disks can clog up the wheel and cause them to explode at high speeds. This is a primary reason why grinding wheels should not be used for non-ferous metals. I've seen it happen before and it's not pretty (or safe!)

    • @StreetRodJim
      @StreetRodJim  4 роки тому

      @@jasonsirois3591 Good info. It cut cleanly. I think I just twisted and it popped.

    • @richarddelfino2720

      I was thinking the same thing. That grinder really chewed up that aluminum. For a guy that’s so fussy that could have been avoided with a relatively cheap pair of snips. Get a green and red pair and you can neatly trim any of those panels.
